These were all articles identified as plagiarism. The copyvios have been removed, when it was public domain the source has now been attributed. An ongoing effort is being made to screen other contributions by the editors who uploaded the plagiarism.

No further action necessary

Plagiarism appears to have been in the other direction

  1. Francis Cunningham Per Geni, was copied from us (as the Wikipedia article is older than the website in question).
  2. Georges Bizet - I have removed the copyvio text, but it seems to have been inserted a long time ago and I am having trouble seeing where This article was copied from us by the other site. I replaced the text, and dropped a note on the talk page explaining how I established that, if anyone's curious.
  3. John Macoun - Other site uses Wikipedia's text with attribution (it shows Last-Modified: Fri, 27 Oct 2006 12:04:42 GMT so the attribution was added after Brandt looked at it; this is confirmed by Google's current cache copy, with a last-crawled date of 14 Sep 2006)
  4. William Coddington - It looks to me like the other site plagiarized from here
  5. Henryk Sienkiewicz - Plagiarism was in the other direction.
  6. Joseph Pitton de Tournefort - Added by Smallweed (talk · contribs) on 0:20, 23 November 2003. As pointed out by Haukurth (talk · contribs), text was based on 1911 Britannica, and copied by the external site which then put its own copyright notice on it. I'm contacting them to see if I can clear things up. (2006-11-06: Attribution added by remote page. It was not there in on 2006-10-19, according to Google's cache copy.)

Editor's other contributions have been screened

  1. Melvin Jones - added by 203.0.230.xxx (talkcontribs) 08:43, November 21, 2001 - Just a few edits, I don't see any other smoking guns.
  2. Gopabandhu Das-delt with - Inserted by 164.164.88.66 (talk · contribs) which has no other significant edits.
  3. Henry Nehrling- Another case like James Clark Ross, complete additional bio added onto the end of the article, rather than replacing it. This time by 66.177.58.218 (talkcontribs) at 18:43, August 19, 2006, also the IP's only undeleted edit.
  4. Det Danske Spejderkorps
looks suspicious, but I couldn't find a match online.
  5. James Clark Ross Very odd, a complete bio was copy and pasted onto the end of the article by 144.131.12.14 (talkcontribs) on 12:02, September 5, 2006 IP's only undeleted edit, but it seemed worth pointing out because it's so strange.
  6. John Glover (general) restored revisions prior to addition of copyvio by 64.145.128.108 (talkcontribs) at 15:21, October 20, 2005 - ip has no other edits
  7. Félix Vallotton - Inserted by 217.136.29.129 (talk · contribs) which has no other major edits. The link Brandt provides isn't even in english, and I can't find another match. The rough translation Google provides isn't even close to the highlighted text: http://www.wikipedia-watch.org/plagiarism/0517.html. Am I missing something?
The text is at http://www.unil.ch/fvallotton/english/Vallottonen.htm but that page quickly skips over to a French page, I guess you'll have to disable Javascript or something to see it. It's easier to check the Wayback Machine, which reveals that the article was there already in 2000, before Wikipedia was even started: http://web.archive.org/web/20000303231552/http://www.unil.ch/fvallotton/english/Vallottonen.htm So Brandt seems to have got it right. 48. Michael Thonet - added by Mr-914 (talk · contribs) on 12:21, December 21, 2004; possible that same user's edit to Honda on November 30, 2004 was copyvio, but I couldn't find the original source. Examination of other edits reveals no further copyvio, and also suggests responsible contributor. No edits since December 2005.
  49. Adam Sedgwick RJNeb2 (talkcontribs) 23:25, May 8, 2006 Partial List of articles contributed. I've gone through most of the users early contributions - out and out plagiarism got less and less frequent as time went on. User is still editing and is making efforts to learn to cite sources properly and fix any plagiarism problems that remain in his contribution list, and is doing some good work in film-related biographies. Editors with multiple problems uncovered

  1. Calvin L. Rampton and Scott M. Matheson which I've now deleted. All were taken from the Utah History Encyclopedia. Haukur 19:58, 24 October 2006 (UTC) Also Charlie Wyse from another source, now deleted by me. Haukur 11:03, 25 October 2006 (UTC) I bet edits like this are copyvios as well, but it's much harder to check with offline sources. Haukur 11:16, 25 October 2006 (UTC) Also plagiarized in a large edit to Hunter MacKenzie Austin as recently as September - I think I'll go ahead with a block now. Haukur
    19:53, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
  2. Benjamin Waterhouse Inserted by Acumen76 (talk · contribs) on 25 March 2006. He also inserted Peter of Pappacarbone which I've now deleted. There are probably more.
  3. Nels H. Smith - Inserted by 138.88.161.238 who added Jim Geringer, Jack R. Gage, Clifford Joy Rogers, Arthur G. Crane, Leslie A. Miller, Frank Emerson, Frank L. Houx, DeForest Richards, William A. Richards, John Eugene Osborne and Amos W. Barber on the same day. Those probably all need to be deleted, I'm working on it. The user was clearly working in good faith but the source he used is not in the public domain. Haukur 16:19, 25 October 2006 (UTC) Done. Many were actually cleaned up last year by User:MarkGallagher, well done! Haukur 22:00, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
  4. Frank E. Lucas
    - Part of the Wyoming series above.
  5. Alonzo M. Clark - Part of the Wyoming series.
  6. Ernest Malinowski - Inserted by Witkacy (talk · contribs) on 20 July 2005.
  7. Adam Asnyk - Added by Witkacy (talk · contribs) on 13:45, 29 August 2005
  8. Józef Wybicki - Added by Witkacy (talk · contribs) on 19:57, 8 June 2005
  9. August Zaleski - Added by Witkacy (talk · contribs) on 05:42, 21 July 2005.
  10. Cuno Amiet - Added by Aecis (talk · contribs) on 23:57, 3 August 2004.
  11. Édouard Vuillard - Added by Aecis (talk · contribs) on 21:54, 4 August 2004. Aecis has been notified and identified more. Haukur 16:23, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
  12. James H. Price - Inserted by Mytwocents (talk · contribs) on 23 January 2006. User cited the source he copied so was obviously working in good faith. He made a similar mistake at William Jay Gaynor (now deleted by me) and there are likely other instances. Haukur 08:26, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
  13. Karl Alexander Müller, Frédéric Mistral and Roger Martin du Gard. All of those copyvios persisted until today when I deleted them. I fear there may be others. Haukur
    09:25, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
  14. Alois Jirásek - Added by Vinette (talk · contribs) on 17:31, 17 May 2006. Also added copyvios at František Čelakovský and Mikoláš Aleš which I've now deleted. Some other edits look suspicious but I can't confirm that they are problematic.
  15. Pete Hill - Added by 63.87.116.131 (talk · contribs) on 17:21, 3 March 2006. Also recent copyvios to Tributary state and Alfred Bestall. Edits the same articles as User:Rossp who had previously been blocked for copyright violations and also had copyvio edits to Alfred Bestall. I've cleaned up those copyvios and blocked both the IP and the username. Haukur 19:40, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
  16. Octaviano Ambrosio Larrazolo Added by YourNickname (talk · contribs) on 03:16, 8 April 2005. Also added plagiarized text to Holm O. Bursum which I've now deleted. There are probably others.
  17. Leta Hollingworth using plagirised text from several sources. Sambit Bal and Lugbara
were also copyvios, but were stubbed long ago.

Only one problem found so far

  1. Alain LeRoy Locke added by Perl (talkcontribs) 00:06, March 11, 2004 - Perl has a huge number of contributions. I checked some of his article creations from around the same time and they did not appear to violate copyright (though some copied text from public domain sources). I've posted to his talk page asking for help in identifying old boo-boos.
  2. Martin Grove Brumbaugh-delt with - Inserted by User:Biruitorul on 11 May 2006. Biruitorul is an active contributor with no other history of copyvio problems, so it's possible the contribution is valid. I've dropped a note on the user's talk page to see if s/he can shed any light.
  3. Elwood Haynes - Inserted on 8 April 2005 by Pazuzu413 (talk · contribs) who has lots and lots of bad image uploads. A cursory search didn't reveal any other articles started by him/her but there may well be some.
  4. Charles Manly- Revisions prior to addition of copyvio restored - added by 24.162.252.135 (talkcontribspage movesblock userblock log) at 00:51, January 24, 2006
  5. Nicolaas Witsen added by User:ISasha on October 12. User has several DYK notices on his/her talk page, and so has probably been contributing new articles regularly. I've dropped a note on the talk page, so I'll see if I get a response. -- Vary | Talk

  6. Sol White - Inserted by 24.163.216.152 (talk · contribs) who has a bunch of contributions. A cursory check didn't reveal anything else.
  7. Vilhelm Hammershøi - Inserted by Bucephalus (talk · contribs) on 23 March 2005. Checking some of his other edits I don't see any other clear instances of plagiarism (but see Metamorphosis of Narcissus which is a borderline copyvio from Tate and should be reworded). Haukur 11:10, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
  8. Ludwig Binswanger - Inserted by Damion (talk · contribs) in 2003. He started many other articles around the same time but those I checked didn't seem to be plagiarized. I also checked the source he was using in the Binswanger instance and trying a few samples I didn't find any more problems. Haukur 12:54, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
  9. Charles_W._Leng - Added on 16:03, 22 June 2005 by 65.246.232.101 (talk · contribs). A quick check doesn't reveal anything else suspicious.
  10. Philip William Otterbein - Added by DanielCD (talk · contribs) on 21:21, 4 October 2005. User has no memory of incident but says he was copying a lot of text around at the time while incorporating public domain sources into Wikipedia. A check shows that this is true and also doesn't reveal any other problems.
  11. States Rights Gist - added by Daysleeper47 (talk · contribs) on 22:01, July 10 2006; user has apologized and created a fresh version. Other contribs have yet to be analyzed.
  12. Text added to Quantum mind by DV8 2XL (talk · contribs). Some of that text was later found on another website. Other contributions not analyzed.
