A lengthy welcome

Welcome to Wikipedia. I've added a welcome message to the top of this page that gives a great deal of information about Wikipedia. I hope you find it useful.

Additionally, I hope you don't mind if I share some of my thoughts on starting out as a new editor on Wikipedia: If I could get editors in your situation to follow just one piece of advice, it would be this: Learn Wikipedia by working only on non-contentious topics until you have a feel for the normal editing process and the policies that usually come up when editing casually. You'll find editing to be fun, easy, and rewarding. The rare disputes are resolved quickly and easily in collaboration.

Working on biographical information about living persons is far more difficult. Wikipedia's

Biographies of living persons policy
requires strict adherence to multiple content policies, and applies to all information about living persons including talk pages.

If you have a relationship with the topics you want to edit, then you will need to review Wikipedia's

neutrality
required in articles.

Some topic areas within Wikipedia have

policies and guidelines
.

If you work from

WP:RSN
are helpful in determining if a source is reliable.

If you find yourself in a disagreement with another editor, it's best to

talk page
.

I hope you find some useful information in all this, and welcome again. --Hipal (talk) 20:58, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:JonathanBennett-2019.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:JonathanBennett-2019.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to
    Di-replaceable fair use disputed
    |<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 04:21, 6 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read

the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard

to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on

section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing
.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. — Ирука13 18:05, 16 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

not always a good idea to pattern your edits after other articles, as if those too are problematic you would be unaware of it. Request reason:

Hi, 331dot I apologize for not elaborating on my request but yes, I now understand the rules of copyrighted content and how it is not allowed. I can also assure you it will not happen again.

Accept reason:

OK, I'm accepting this unblock request, in light of the discussion below. Aboutnick, I'm not filing a formal editing restriction, but you take it on yourself to learn about our image use policy before uploading any more images, and to ask for help before uploading if there is any doubt in your mind about the copyright status of an image. Best Girth Summit (blether) 08:17, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Aboutnick: I'm all for second chances, and would be willing to consider extending one to you here (subject to the blocking admin's approval), but your explanation that you were under the impression that Flickr only allows non-copyrighted imagery gives me pause. This is the link that you took the image from - if you follow that link, you will see a sizable 'copyright' symbol underneath the photograph, which says "All rights reserved". There's even a link from there to their page explaining their different licenses, which explicitly sets out that if you wish to use an image copied from Flikr with this tag, you need to contact the account holder first to obtain their permission. I don't think that it could have been any clearer that the image was not free to use - either you were exceedingly negligent in your checks to see whether it was free from copyright, or you didn't check at all, neither of which is acceptable. How will you ensure that in future you avoid making mistakes like this? Girth Summit (blether) 10:53, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Girth Summit: Hello there, I appreciate your consideration. First off, I just started editing on Wikipedia late last year, I've learned how to edit and do a lot of stuff, added images is not one of them. I was very ignorant of the rules of adding imagery without checking if it was copyrighted or not. In this case, I simply did not even check to see if there were any signs that stated it was copyrighted, and for that, I apologize. As stated previously, I was under the impression any images on Flickr were non-copyrighted images, know that it has been made clear to me, I can definitely tell you it will not happen again. Once agin, I appreciate your leniency and willingness to hear me out.

Best Regards, User:Aboutnick (talk) 09:44, 19 July 2023 (UTC)}}[reply]

  • Aboutnick: The other thing I would ask you to do is to consider the amount of time that violations like these take to identify and put right. Our volunteers invest oceans of time combing through people's contributions checking for copyright issues, because of the legal jeopardy violations put us in, whether they're done intentionally or thoughtlessly. Folk are often unwilling to unblock people with a track record of ignoring copyright guidelines, because of the risk that they will repeat their mistakes and do the same thing again. If you are unblocked now, and do the same thing again, you will be very unlikely to be able to convince anyone to unblock you again. In short: do not make any assumptions about copyright. If you are uploading an image that you did not take yourself, take time to identify the license that it is released under. If you cannot find that license, assume that all rights are reserved and that you cannot use it. If you can find the license, check that it is compliant with our requirements before you upload it. If you aren't sure, ask for help at the Teahouse. Uploading images you didn't take yourself is one of the harder things to get right around here - if in doubt, don't.
  • Whpq - in light of the above discussion, would you be willing to consider an unblock? Perhaps with a TBan restricting them from uploading images, if you are still concerned about their competence in that area? Best Girth Summit (blether) 18:27, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
A simple promise to not upload images would suffice. I'll add that I would not view that as a permanent restriction. I encourage Aboutnick to read through our
Media Copyright Questions if they find an image they feel could be used in an article. Experienced editors there would be able to provide appropriate answers before any upload were to be made. -- Whpq (talk) 20:44, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply

side note, it amazes me how you all have nothing else better to do then blocking me over nothing on this website, yall are broke so get your money up first. I understand that 98.21% of you have no friends and no life but this is so unnecessary. I'm going to continue editing, whether you know about it or not. This is so humiliating for all of you who put in the time of day just to check to see if i was still editing (which i was and will continue to do). I tried to be nice and be very lowkey with my editing but since yall are broke yall are haters so yea im going to continue editing while not logged in and thats just that.
    Sincerely, Me. Aboutnick (talk) 14:05, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK, well, I guess we've got the measure of you then. I'm not broke, FWIW - I'm not particularly rich either, but I manage to hold down a full time job as a teacher while also volunteering here. I've almost paid off the mortgage on my house, and am planning for early retirement in a few years (which will be nice). I have plenty of friends - a few of whom I met through my editing here, but most of whom I met in the normal course of life. So, ranting about how I'm a broke loser with no friends is all water off a duck's back. Here's something you ought to know however: I didn't actually run a check on your account before I reblocked you - I came across your IPs investigating another case, because an editor thought that your logged-out edit warring was somebody else: in other words, you almost got somebody else blocked with your irresponsible conduct, and it's a good thing I ran a check to see who was behind the IPs. So, you're right that we can't technically prevent you from editing - you can go and find a new internet connection, and we won't recognise you. If you don't cause any problems, I guess we'll never know it's you (but if we do trace it back to you, you'll be blocked again). What I don't understand is why you would want to do that. Why would you want to contribute your time to volunteering for a project that gave you the boot? Why wouldn't you go and do something else with your time? I'll never understand folk who want to do that. Anyway, best wishes, whatever you do going forward. Girth Summit (blether) 18:05, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
