@Bluesangrel: Generally, it’s better to be consistent and use the most common name, which is presumably the page’s title. If the pages’s name is not the most common, RM is the least controversial way to establish consensus.—Bagumba (talk) 19:21, 14 June 2018 (UTC)

Dwight Howard

Hello, I just want to let you know that Dwight Howard was just traded on June 20, 2018 to the Brooklyn Nets. He was traded in exchange for Timofey Mozgov, the 45th pick of the 2018 NBA Draft, and a 2021 second round pick. This is some new information that can be added, so there really isn't anything to change. You could also change the heading "Charlotte Hornets (2017-present)" to (2017-2018). You could also create a new heading with the previous info, Brooklyn Nets (2018-present).

BIG3 colors in basketball biography infobox

Given that consensus is not to add BIG3 teams to the infobox, could you remove them from Module:Basketball color/data? This might discourage folks from adding these teams as the primary affiliation. I also have questions about if we need defunct NBA, G League, WNBA, etc. teams in there as well since for retired players Consensus is to keep the default gray box. Technical news

  • Starting on July 9, the WMF Security team, Trust & Safety, and the broader technical community will be seeking input on an upcoming change that will restrict editing of site-wide JavaScript and CSS to a new technical administrators user group. Bureaucrats and stewards will be able to grant this right per a community-defined process. The intention is to reduce the number of accounts who can edit frontend code to those who actually need to, which in turn lessens the risk of malicious code being added that compromises the security and privacy of everyone who accesses Wikipedia. For more information, please review the FAQ.
  • Syntax highlighting has been graduated from a Beta feature on the English Wikipedia. To enable this feature, click the highlighter icon () in your editing toolbar (or under the hamburger menu in the 2017 wikitext editor). This feature can help prevent you from making mistakes when editing complex templates.
  • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in July (previously scheduled for June). This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.

Bimbo

Hi! We don't know each other but i need an advice/help from a neutral POV. I edited the page

User:Flyer22 Reborn started an edit war ([3]), deleting without explanation the passage ([4]), deleting it a second time even when i pointed out that what i inserted was mostly already sourced/present in the article ([5]) and even deleting it against the rules a third time ([6]). What he argued (as you may read in the links) is fairly inconsistent. He invited me (as you can see in the links) to "talk" about it. Yet he deleted twice my messages to his talk page ([7] and [8]) and refused to answer to me, shutting down any possibility of collaborating in finding a common version of the passage. Now, to me this is a very distruptive behaviour: firstly he deleted a correct passage committing what i see as a vandalism, then when he was reverted he started inconsinstently referring to WP:Undue (which is ironic considering these infos are mostly already in the article, just not in the lead of it), then he asked to talk before any new edit and yet he refused to answer and deleted my messages to him, in a rude way, unecessarly calling my messages to him a "mess". Trusting your judgement as a sysop, i'll thank you if you could give a neutral POV on the situation for the better of the article, as any effort to find a common ground has been met with an unreasonable refuse to talk at all. Thank you. 93.36.190.141 (talk

Did the Sixers actually sign him? I think he’s on a three-year deal n Israel but has an opt-out, but he hasn’t actually opted out. He looks like he will join the Summer League but we all know that’s not the same as being added to the roster. Any insight? Rikster2 (talk) 14:18, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

Last time I did quick check, I hadn't seen anything official about 76ers signing. Either SB Nation or Australian blogs speculating about him sticking this year. I don't add summer league to infobox, but I generally haven't bothered removing them either.—Bagumba (talk) 14:34, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

Oh well, people gonna yell INVOLVED without looking at what and when I actually edited. And in hindsight, full protection doesn't work on NBA articles because nobody really wants to discuss the nuances, just blindly say he's signed or update infoboxes. It's all good.—Bagumba (talk) 05:04, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
I feel like you made a mistake but your heart was in the right place. I dont think anyone would be complaining about a semi-protection of LeBron. Being that incorrect signings are very rare, do you think it is time we scap the wait until july 7 policy? I mean, we don't have to beat ESPN to the press, but... ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 12:30, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
No. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. It’s not important that the chatter and run up to the signing is reflected. A player isn’t a member of a team until the deal is certified and announced, otherwise why have the moratorium. And false starts and rumors are actually quite common. This frankly is only a credible issue in the top 1% of cases. Rikster2 (talk) 12:36, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
I agree with Rikster – it's only an issue here because the LeBron James article has such high traffic. Any other page, no one bats an eye. DaHuzyBru (talk) 13:21, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
@
WP:RSBREAKING. LeBron was the rare case to put out a statement saying he agreed, and a few might hint at their choice on social media. In practice, most editors only change the first sentence with the team and the infobox, and rarely write prose that say "agreed".—Bagumba (talk
) 04:08, 5 July 2018 (UTC)
Right. I definitely see your POV and I think too many people were pillorying you when you were just doing your job, so to speak. Most folks don't understand the ins and out of NBA deals. Frankly, I didn't either, and I feel like I've learned a lot because of this discussion. I can only go on what the media says, especially with prominent FAs like LeBron and DeMarcus Cousins. That being said, perhaps "agreed to terms" is the best way to go? It's all semantics, but it is vage enough and can be easily changed if the player backed out of the deal for whatever reason. Of course, we would need some consensus to change. ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 14:15, 5 July 2018 (UTC)
I think some feel strongly that with
WP:ONUS).—Bagumba (talk
) 14:45, 5 July 2018 (UTC)
I feel like if the actual team and league aren’t announcing a signing yet, then it’s clearly not officially closed. If it were, the league wouldn’t bother with this process. And an announcement is a clear black and white standard that can be followed that cuts through the rumors to the fact. Rikster2 (talk) 14:56, 5 July 2018 (UTC)
It's definitely not official, and the opening sentence or infobox should not reflect a verbal agreement. What Editorofthewiki is talking about is like what's at LeBron James now, just saying that he has reached an agreement in prose since he has publicly announced it. Definitely cannot rely on anonymous sources, so this rules out 95% of cases.—Bagumba (talk) 15:05, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

Basketball biography infobox glitch

I’ve noticed that for a number of players (examples Jalen Jones and Tony Gaffney) who played for more than one college, their college “plainlist” is showing up as a bulleted list instead of a plain list. Any idea what’s up? Rikster2 (talk) 22:05, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

Above my head. The problems seems to occur if both the high school field and the college field both have multiple bulleted items, then the college field does not get rendered as a plainlist as expected. Pinging Frietjes for their expertise.—Bagumba (talk) 01:49, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
Rikster2, see the thread at Template talk:Infobox musical artist. it's a wider problem with the backend parser, but it should be fixable with changes to Module:Infobox. Frietjes (talk) 12:57, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
should be fixed now. Frietjes (talk) 13:08, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

I understand the BLP concerns but Deadspin has confirmed he has died. Seems like a bizarre affair. ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 15:30, 7 July 2018 (UTC)
Deadspin only came out more recently, and itself is only “according to multiple reports”, including overseas Sportando and ABC7 which didnt name Honeycutt. It may end up being true, but at the time multiple IPs were making unsourced edits, it’s a BLP about someone dying, and the breaking news in my searches were dubious at the time. I think we owe it to a person’s family and friends to get death reports right.—Bagumba (talk) 16:02, 7 July 2018 (UTC)

NBA, Lakers

hey, I just thought it would be better to have the Lakers in the Creation and merger because in 1946-1956 the Lakers was the first dynasty and dominance in the league they won 5 titles, so shouldn't they be in it like the Celtics is on their in the league expansion and competition 1956-1979? Shouldn't the 5 titles be enough to just put Lakers on the 1946-1956? How come the Celtics is on their from 1956-1979 but the Lakers can't? The Lakers are the NBA's most famous and successful franchises, most record wins, most finals appearances, all around best franchise in NBA — Preceding

I don't think this should be called Celtics dominance when back then in the 1960s the league was established with lower competition and a lot less teams. Lakers have been always more consistent good throughout the eras of NBA history.— Preceding

@The Speller: 11 titles in 13 years is independent of where they might rank compared to other eras. If you believe the Lakers were also dominant, just add sourced text to demonstrate it.—Bagumba (talk) 03:55, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Given the additional sources I mentioned at the AfD, I respectfully ask you to take another look at your delete vote. ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 12:57, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – September 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2018).

removed AsterionCrisco 1492KFKudpungLizRandykittySpartaz

Interface administrator changes

added AmorymeltzerMr. StradivariusMusikAnimalMSGJTheDJXaosflux

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a "stop-gap" discussion, six users have temporarily been made interface administrators while discussion is ongoing for a more permanent process for assigning the permission. Interface administrators are now the only editors allowed to edit sitewide CSS and JavaScript pages, as well as CSS/JS pages in another user's userspace. Previously, all administrators had this ability. The right can be granted and revoked by bureaucrats.

Technical news

  • Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour.
  • Some abuse filter variables have changed. They are now easier to understand for non-experts. The old variables will still work but filter editors are encouraged to replace them with the new ones. You can find the list of changed variables on mediawiki.org. They have a note which says Deprecated. Use ... instead. An example is article_text which is now page_title.
  • Abuse filters can now use how old a page is. The variable is page_age.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has resolved to perform a round of
    Functionaries team
, and they will be requested to assist in the vetting process. The deadline to submit an application is 23:59 UTC, 12 September, and the candidates that move forward will be published on-wiki for community comments on 18 September.

NFL Protests Goal

Please reference the goal(s). I've searched numerous times, and have yet to find the end-goal stated. There are a lot of assumptions and speculations on what it is by the media and others with an opinion, but no one who has protested has stated "if X happens, I will stop protesting" Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.8.22.172 (talk) 11:43, 4 September 2018 (UTC)

Speeling :)

I had just looked up 'earnt', which put me onto 'spelt', which I had always thought was spelled 'spellt'. Ah well, spelling is more about what you can stomach than what you can see. :) Shenme (talk) 02:12, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

@Shenme: I only realize my eyesight is going bad when I'm travelling and having to read maps in foreign languages. Otherwise in a familiar language (like English), one can skip over a lot of letters by just reading out of context.—Bagumba (talk) 02:19, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

Deon lyle

Why do you think we need to purge Wikipedia of all JBA players not named Ball. I know you are going to say I don’t think Lyle meets GNG blah blah but he is more notable than other players recently nominated for deletion. He was the c-USA sixth man of the year and is currently going to Europe where he will probably play next year, or maybe this year. The San Antonio sources should not be discredited since there are multiple authors and it is one of the largest cities in the USA. ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 20:17, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

I just feel like that guideline was generally so there werent articles with people whose only claim to fame was in several mentions in the hometown paper rather than a few articles in a major newspaper. I could be wrong though. ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 12:52, 21 September 2018 (UTC)

Tyler Ulis

Hey man. I'm sorry for adding unsourced content to Tyler Ulis. It won't happen again. Since I play for the Warriors, I get excited when a new teammate joins the team! WarriorsFan30112335 (talk) 19:21, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

Dalrymple clippings

Could you test the new Boston Globe link? I may be able to update these now if I have done it right Rikster2 (talk) 13:01, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

@Rikster2: That link downloads onto my computer. You should be able to get something like this which allows you see the page in the browser without having to download it.—Bagumba (talk) 13:04, 23 September 2018 (UTC)
OK, then I don’t know what option to select when I use the clipping function. That one is “save,” others are ancestry, email, Facebook, Twitter, embed. Rikster2 (talk) 13:12, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

DYK for Moses Brown (basketball)

On 25 September 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Moses Brown (basketball), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Moses Brown is the top-ranked player in a UCLA Bruins incoming class that also includes the son of a Basketball Hall of Famer? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Moses Brown (basketball). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Moses Brown (basketball)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • Partial blocks should be available for testing in October on the Test Wikipedia and the Beta-Cluster. This new feature allows admins to block users from editing specific pages and in the near-future, namespaces and uploading files. You can expect more updates and an invitation to help with testing once it is available.
  • The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team is currently looking for input on how to measure the effectiveness of blocks. This is in particular related to how they will measure the success of the aforementioned partial blocks.
  • Because of a data centre test, you will be able to read but not edit the Wikimedia projects for up to an hour on 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has, by motion, amended the procedure on functionary inactivity.
  • The community consultation for 2018 CheckUser and Oversight appointments has concluded. Appointments will be made by October 11.
  • Following a request for comment, the size of the Arbitration Committee will be decreased to 13 arbitrators, starting in 2019. Additionally, the minimum support percentage required to be appointed to a two-year term on ArbCom has been increased to 60%. ArbCom candidates who receive between 50% and 60% support will be appointed to one-year terms instead.
  • Nominations for the 2018 Arbitration Committee Electoral Commission are being accepted until 12 October. These are the editors who help run the ArbCom election smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please consider nominating yourself.
