FU images

Thanks for fixing those two images. I got four hits on my talk page. I went to the history of MB article and several more needing fixing, so I've done that.RlevseTalk 12:57, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Eagle Scouts

Per changes recently made to Christian Jacobs: Where are you doing your online search for Eagle Scouts? I just searched Google, Yahoo!, and Lycos for my own name and for the names of six other known Eagles, and came up with nothing. Unless you have access to the BSA official records, you ought not to be attempting these verifications. -- Struhs (talk) 20:39, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

I would not expect to find my own name either, as I don't meet notability. I'm working a
List of Eagle Scouts (Boy Scouts of America). I'm guessing someone added Jacobs at one point without a citation and the entry was removed to the todo list. Without a proper reference, he can't be added to the list and should not have the category. I did find news references for several other potential entries and got them properly added yesterday. We really can't use BSA records anyway since they are not published. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk

Boy Rangers of America

It ran the normal full course of 6 hours on DYK, at which time it was removed. All I did was credit the article and credit User talk:Truthanado who was listed in the next update. Royalbroil 13:30, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks; I had just figured that out and was going to get back to you, --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 14:14, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
Congratulations, the article was a DYK. I'm not sure why I was given credit, the article is clearly yours; all I did was nominate it. Good work. Truthanado (talk) 02:19, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Template with lots of field

Hi Ed, I noticed your copy-editing of the citing templates the

Boy Scouting (Boy Scouts of America) article. Importantly you removed spacing betwee the fields: from 'first = John | last = Doe | authorlink = John Doe' to 'first=John|last=Doe|authorlink=John Doe'. This leads to difficult line wrapping for editors, clearly showing up when once looks at diffs. Is this something you did intentionally, and if so why? Wim van Dorst (talk)
21:00, 14 January 2008 (UTC).

My mistake- I was clearing out unused fields and killed some spacing. It is fixed now. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 21:49, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
Actually, I wasn't pointing out an error or something, but merely asking how come you did it like this? Wim van Dorst (talk) 21:52, 14 January 2008 (UTC).
There were a number of fields in the citation templates that were not being used; it is considered a goo practice to not include unused fields as they clutter up editing. When I do this sort of cleanup, I copy the text into an
Ultraedit window and use the replace feature to search and delete entries. I must have killed the spaces doing that. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk

Thanks for cleaning up the LCCN reference. I was unaware of {{LCCN}} and in fact had looked unsuccessfully for a better way to cite non-isbn books at the LOC, other than manually constructing an id. I see you've deleted the two EUG award images, so I've rm the links/rationales to the EUGoodman article on those two images' pages, accordingly. Cheers, JGHowes talk - 19:12, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Your recent edits

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to

talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. On many keyboards, the tilde is entered by holding the Shift key, and pressing the key with the tilde pictured. You may also click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. My point is: Why did you feel compelled to make this announcement on the talk pages, complete with {{ambox}}? Everyone else just takes an article off their watchlist and goes away. Why the grand exit? - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 19:27, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
I can't give you a better answer today than "just because." Dealing with camp articles is no fun anymore and I refuse to deal with them any more. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 19:32, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
Sounds like a good enough reason to me. That number of articles can be a pain. Sometimes I think about throwing in the towel when I'm on new-page patrol, and I see the umpteenth article about a garage band that is supposedly notable because they're an important influence on the zydeco scene in Oshkosh, Wisconsin or something like that. Shenandoah Acres

I've gone ahead and done a full history merge with the original article and the one you've userfied. This gives you a few benefits. First of all, when we eventually restore this article to the main namespace, all you have to do is a simple move. Secondly, this brings anyone who had Shenandoah Acres watchlisted on board with the userfied page (i.e. this carried over on their watchlists). SchuminWeb (Talk) 05:16, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

replacing album cover images with inferior versions

Why are you replacing all of the album cover images for Tangerine Dream albums with inferior versions? Please revert your changes unless you have a good reason. Thanks. Kaldari (talk) 17:11, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Inferior is a bit vague, but I am going to presume you mean smaller. My watchlist showed that a large number of these had invalid rationales, including images that I had uploaded and those I had done rationales for before the template was available. Instead of just updating the rationales, I decided to move to PNG versions. Since the infobox only shows 200px, I don't see the need for larger sizes. I think all of the covers I had uploaded previously were only 300px, and others were a variety of sizes. All of these are cover scans from LPs in my collection, originally saved in Paint Shop Pro raw format at some large size (I don't recall the exact size at the moment) and later converted to the smaller PNG images. I did about 40 images yesterday; if you have a concern with any particular images, please let me know. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 17:48, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
And no, I have no problem with you replacing images. PNG is much better because you don't get artifacts when the image is resized. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 17:57, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
Your images have terrible compression artifacts. You either need to dramatically increase the color palate on your PNGs or start saving them as PNG-24s instead of PNG-8s. The whole purpose of using PNGs over JPEGs is defeated when you overcompress the PNGs to start with. Kaldari (talk) 23:57, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
Can you give me a specific example? --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 00:07, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

External links

The discrepancy puzzled me as well, but on further reflection it makes sense. I realised that the two types of links have two entirely different purposes. External links (as in, the ones grouped at the end with no specific citation) are for the reader who wishes to explore the topic further. It's unkind to spur that curiousity and then have it dashed by going through a paywall. References, on the other hand, are there to confirm the factual nature of a claim. It seems sensible to allow editors to cast their net as wide as possible when looking for an external citation to back up a claim. Peer-reviewed journal articles, for instance, are almost exclusively behind a subscription page, and it would seriously damage the credibility of the encyclopedia if we weren't allowed to use those as support for what we write. List of Eagle Scouts (Boy Scouts of America)

//Note: In your list of Eagle Scout Articles you removed a name that can be referenced. By contacting the BSA and the Eagle Scouts of America you can confirm the legitimacy of the name mentioned and the title he holds. The name I am referring to can be viewed in the recent history of edits on the page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.219.21.97 (talk) 19:27, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

I presume you are referring to:
  • Anthony R Giesey; Youngest to receive the award in the 21st century.a[›]
This is not "my" list, simply a list that I and other editors maintain. Simply because Giesey is a fellow Eagle Scout does not make him notable. There are clear criteria for inclusion listed on the talk page; when you edited the article you had to have seen the notice referring you to that criteria. If by title you mean "youngest", how is that notable? You added a reference to the Distinguished Eagle Scout list; Giesey is not listed, thus the use of that reference is spurious. Meet the FL criteria, notability criteria for wiki, and properly ref it, and we may be able to work this. I personally know a 16-year old that made Eagle at 12y9m back in 2004. I can prove it too. Were you younger than that when you made Eagle and can you prove it? Even if you could, that alone would not meet notability criteria for being on wiki. RlevseTalk 21:10, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. Certainly— it is in the documentation for {{

talkheader
}}, specifically:

This template should be used only when needed. Do not add this template to every talk page. In particular, it should not be added to otherwise empty talk pages.

I've only used the template where folks have a history of using the talk page as a forum instead of working the article—

Talk:M113 Armored Personnel Carrier is a good example. As the article in question has had no discussion, the header is not needed. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk

syntax question

Hi Ed,

Recognizing that you are all-knowing, all-wise, and an all-around nice guy, I wonder if you would take a look at Jim Palmer#Career statistics? I'm trying to force the MLBBioRet template to right-align and maybe there's a better way than what I'm doing to work around the lack of this parameter in the template itself. Which is regrettable when it's used below a 2nd-level heading. JGHowes talk - 22:57, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

You did about as good as it gets without changing the template. If you want to start a discussion on the template talk, I can add an alignment parameter. I think the MOS states that you should not include images floated left directly after a header as it mess up certain things. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 00:30, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Stub listings in categories?

Hi Gadget850... Thank you for your welcome. I just recently created a wiki account as you probably know, and I am greatly confused and lost on how to overall navigate through here. My main question would lie in: how do I create stub listings in categories? For example, I saw that Nickelodeon Family Suites has a stub listing under hotels or something like that... How would I get started to create something like that? Any other tips and information would be greatly appreciated. thank you. Veb47u (talk) 13:05, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

If you edit
Template messages that adds the text to the bottom of the page and places the page into Category:Florida building and structure stubs. You can browse through Category:Stub categories to find the category you need; usually the template is listed at the top of the category. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk

White Stag Leadership Development Program

You marked the White Stag Leadership Development Program entry as "Start-Class", which means, "An article that is developing, but which is quite incomplete and, most notably, lacks adequate reliable sources. -- The article has a usable amount of good content, but it is weak in many areas, usually in referencing. Quality of the prose may be distinctly unencyclopedic, and MoS compliance non-existent; but the article should satisfy fundamental content policies such as notability and BLP, and provide enough sources to establish verifiability. No Start-Class article should be in any danger of being speedily deleted."

Can you please clarify what additional content and/or references would improve the quality of the article?

Thanks very much.btphelps (talk) 19:33, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

You can't do that

There is every reason to discuss this LARGE matter on a special page, ala CFD (DISCUSSION) ... While Tempates nomenclature may not have the same enlightened ATTITUDE I would certainly hope any admin was familiar with the concept of discussion. Revert your edits, and for pete's sake give a guy time to make posts... Sheese! Fucking rookies! // FrankB 20:31, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

My only edits have been comments- someone else closed the TFD. I considered it, but I have been involved in past discussion and felt it would be a conflict. As far as CFD vs. TFD— if you feel there is an issue of discussion vs. deletion, feel free to take up the cause, but I am not discussing it here and now. If you will calmly and clearly discuss the issue instead of adding drama, you might find that I agree with you on the core issue. I could even explain what the class and groups mean and why they should remain. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 20:41, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Flag Icons Not Needed?

This is what you said on my page:

I was just going to make the same point. Please read

Wikipedia:Manual of Style (flags)
and let us know if there are any questions.

And this is my reply:

Why? Everybody needs flag lists to symbolise the country or U.S. state they were born in and also where they died. So I decided to go ahead with what I was doing. -- 20000 Talk/Contributions 18:23, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

That is not really a question— more a statement of intent. According to that logic, Bruce Willis gets a German flag and John McCain gets a Panamanian flag, even though they were both born as U.S. citizens; if the icon is so essential, then that means that everyone recognizes every state and country flag and we don't need the text. All these issues are well covered in the guideline, please read it. If you really, really disagree with it, take it up on the talk page of the guideline, but be prepared to offer better arguments than what has already been discussed. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 18:57, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Gadget, THIS is where you will find the end result of your input. Let me know what you think (talk). I certainly appreciate the help. I stumbled upon the main article a month or so ago and it seemed as if no one had paid much attention since 2004. So I began a long process of editorial changes which affected the style of just about everything from the original. It has been a very long process (still on-going) and I believe the little pull quote is an enormous improvement over the original author's straightline presentation. Hag2 (talk) 14:04, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Looks good. I removed some style stuff that did not do anything and wrapped the quote in <poem>...</poem> so it does not need line breaks— that seems to have fixed a problem with line spacing. I moved the reference to after the final quote mark— I think it looks better. I need to update my example. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 15:30, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

At Wikipedia:Help desk#Double redirects, I assume you didn't intend to have your signature appear just after the OP's post followed by {{Unsigned}}? List of Eagles

Thanks. Good to know. The problem is, if I see an article such as "List of X," I expect it to contain all X, not just ones someone has decided are notable. Since a complete "List of Eagle Scouts" would run on endlessly until it looked like a phonebook from a large city, it seemed helpful to accurately describe the very limited scope of the page. Qualifying and delimiting the scope of the list in the lead paragraph also works, I suppose. Edison (talk) 18:41, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

Appreciative Newbie

Thank you for your comments, Gadget.

I've read articles on the Wiki for quite some time, but I am brand-spankin'-new to the idea of contributing/editing. I'm just sort of reading what I can find and hacking my way through it. I would really appreciate some guidance.

The majority of the Varsity Scouting material I added comes from months of investigation and interviewing. I spoke personally with every individual mentioned (and a great many others) except for JD Mortensen, who passed on a few years ago. I can add citations for the stuff that came from the written material that I have, but what about all the interviews?

People tend to want to "toot their own horn". As I gathered information, I tended to look on any claims of personal accomplishment with suspicion. Most failed to check out. I eventually located the "founding fathers". They are real gentlemen and characteristically UNwilling to take any credit for their contributions. But, they were willing to "rat" on one another. : Patterns developed as credit was given to the same individuals and I felt pretty good about accepting collaborating statements as "fact". So, most all of the assertions that I am making not only come from an interview, but a collection of interviews. How in the world do I cite that?

I'm looking through a few pages of stuff here on the Wiki and read about verifiability, neutrality, and no original research as I write this. I must be blowing that last one. There's something of a "Catch 22" or a "Chicken and an Egg Problem" here. The reason I went to all the work to develop the history was to eliminate the vacuum I found when I wanted to know. Now that I know, I want to provide the information to others with the same interest. But that seems to be clashing with Wiki's ideals.

Any help you could provide would be appreciated. I'd like to learn how to do this well.

I'll do my best to find my way back here. I'd appreciate it if you seek me out it seems to you that I have gotten lost.

I am pretty new to the Scouting wikiproject so I am not sure about this. Yesterday I reverted a change to the main BSA page where someone added a troop link. Today I noticed Ricewp (the same user that added the link to the main page I deleted) created the following article Simsbury Boy Scout Troop 175. Personally I question whether a non-historical troop really qualifies for having an article, but that isn't a beef either way for me. The page mentions the names of scouts in the troop. I am not sure that is appropriate but I don't know what the project overall has determined for a situtation like this. Marauder40 (talk) 14:21, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

NM looks like it was just dealt with. I guess the answer is nominate it for speedy deletion. Marauder40 (talk) 14:40, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
Yes- just go ahead an tag these types of articles. I went on and deleted it since it was a recreation of a deleted article. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 14:43, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

I don't get it. What did you change? And how did you know so fast that the image was new? Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 17:04, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

I forgot to add a summary— wish there was a way to remind you for images like there is for articles. Take a good look st the white area on the original. I did some cleanup: made the color areas solid and made the white transparent. I have 2,500 thousand pages on my watchlist, 90% of those are Scouting articles. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 17:26, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Talk page archive for Talk:AC power plugs and sockets

Hello - all the archive links for Talk:AC power plugs and sockets are red, since those talk pages don't exist. Where is the old discussion? (It looks like it never did get appended to the retitled article.) --Wtshymanski (talk) 14:46, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

The talk subpages were never moved with the rest of the article. I moved them and linked them in an archives box at the top of the page; see my note on the talk page. You might want to just delete the old list if it makes it confusing. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 21:05, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Color lighten

Can you lighten these these templates so the new log is halfway visible: {{

Scoutorg BSA
}} {{scouting}}

RlevseTalk 18:33, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
That's even worse. Now the bottom is completely indistinguishable from the background. This is why we should have gone with the oval version.RlevseTalk 21:29, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
There is no bottom to the trefoil. Stepping out to dinner- catch you later --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 21:33, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
Take a look at the scouting template. The light green you changed it to washes out the bottom of the fleurdeleis (trefoil) worse than the old color you had, ie the part without the dark green border. This is why the whole new logo should have been surrounded with a background, as I've been saying all along. RlevseTalk 21:39, 27 November 2008 (UTC)...or you give all the templates the same color as {{WikiProject Scouting}} which has a background color where you can actually see our whole new problematic logo.RlevseTalk 21:44, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
{{Infobox_WorldScouting}} has the same problem. That shade of green simply isn't working.RlevseTalk 21:46, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

The basic problem is the design. The dark green trefoil only covers 2/3 of the gold logo. Surrounding it with an oval or all in dark green would have fixed that.RlevseTalk 02:52, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
For my input, I'd pick NavahoWhite as it's earthy, scouty, can be seen, and matches the project template. RlevseTalk 03:07, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Following one of the last updates the template requests a value for "chiefscouttitle" and the default value "Chief Scout" seems to be lost (example: [5]). Could you please fix this? There are lots of articles around without value for "chiefscouttitle". Thank you. --jergen (talk) 08:00, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Fixed. I broke that on the 2 October update. Forgot it was supposed to have a default. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 11:58, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

hawk mtn camp

Then remove the tag on the camp. That article (along with every other Scout Camp) meets the standard, Spanky. The two organization, though linked in spirt, are two seperate entities and should be treated here as such. As far as the troop's article. I have read the "GUIDELINES" (once again, I emphasize the word "GUIDELINES") several times. It still meets thae "notability standard" the way I (and many others) read them. Remember, they are "GUIDELINES" not law or some other higher power. Just becuase you disagree with the article- and because you have big bad administrative powers and drum up support for your little crusade at the drop of a hat doesn't mean the article needs to go... (This is a BIG complaint for users of Wikipedia...)

The article is being expanded to hit upon the contributions by our brother troop (the now defuct Oreland 2) and the efforts of establishing Scouting organizations in modern suburban communities. Troop 2 did start an international Scouting event- isn't that fairly notable there Spanky? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jmpenzone (talkcontribs)

You don't seem to understand the process. The AfD is already started; removing the tag will not stop it. You need to present a logical and compelling argument to counter my reasoning, and it needs to be done at the AfD page linked from the courtesy note I left on your page. None of my actions in this manner have involved my admin "powers". --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 01:52, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

I don't mean to sound stupid in your own little world, but I have already succeeded at that... I believe you are the one that needs to provide a clear and logical argument as to why it NEEDS to be deleted. I have already successfully demonstrated why this article is relevant. It is a Scout Camp, a location in the world. It been home to many Summer Camps, an International Camporee, has had more than 200 troops camp there from 16 different states and American scout troops station in Germany and Japan. It is a well known camp in Eastern Pennsylvania on par with Treasure Island- and our camp is still open. If you wish to remove all Scout Camps from wikipedia, please go on your crusade and do so. You have only convinced me that you do not like the article for whatever reason and you are hell-bent on removing anything that does not conform to your own personal standards. (not the wikipedia standards) Hundreds if not thousands of other readers/editors have read the page and felt it did not merit deletion. One little boy on a mission does, and I have to explain myself. PLEASE! You're a scout. ALL scouts camps are notable. That should be reason enough. Instead of deleting articles you should worry about expanding articles and making this more comprehensive. Whatever came of the discussion about the discrepancy of where to put portal links? There was a difference in the GTL that said use See also and, what was it, talk page project tags? RlevseTalk 11:07, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
