Paul F. J. Eagles

Hello @Guinness323: I don't know what you're saying but the guy is notable. The standard at AFC and NPP to be an academic, you must have more than 6 papers with 100 citations. He has 22 papers well above 100 citations, making him eminently notable. Don't revert it. scope_creepTalk 23:41, 17 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Scope creep:Regardless of standards elsewhere, this is Wikipedia, and the standards for academic notability are laid out at Wikipedia:Notability (academics). Here's an excerpt:

Academics meeting any one of the following conditions, as substantiated through
WP:BIO or other notability criteria. The merits of an article on the academic will depend largely on the extent to which it is verifiable
.
  1. The person's research has had a significant impact in their scholarly discipline, broadly construed, as demonstrated by independent reliable sources. [Editorial content by me: Note it does NOT say HOW MANY papers the person has published, only the impact the papers have made, and that impact has to be noted by reliable independent sources.]
  2. The person has received a highly prestigious academic award or honor at a national or international level.
  3. The person has been an elected member of a highly selective and prestigious scholarly society or association (e.g., a
Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
    ).
  4. The person's academic work has made a significant impact in the area of higher education, affecting a substantial number of academic institutions.
  5. The person has held a
named chair appointment or distinguished professor
appointment at a major institution of higher education and research, or an equivalent position in countries where named chairs are uncommon.
  6. The person has held a highest-level elected or appointed administrative post at a major academic institution or major academic society.
  7. The person has had a substantial impact outside academia in their academic capacity.
  8. The person has been the head or chief editor of a major, well-established academic journal in their subject area.

If you have reliable sources that indicate the subject meets any ONE of the above criteria, add them to the article. Otherwise, the subject cannot be considered to be a notable academic. I'll give you or other editors a couple of days to rustle up some reliable sources to indicate only one of the above criteria before I revert.Guinness323 (talk) 00:23, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what reason you are rabbiting about this is. Have you got something against the guy? There is only one reason an editor is in this position, is that that you have interacted with the subject in someway. Is that is what happened? I'm only using the skills I've from another processor, specifically the paper citations, but if you think your right, you crack on, after that it will be page protection and then it will be the admin noticeboard. scope_creepTalk 12:16, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have nothing personal against this subject, have never met him or interacted with him, wouldn't know him if I passed him the street. The discussion is about whether this article meets the requirements of notability regarding academics. It is not enough for an editor to insist he is a notable academic, the editor also has to prove it with citations from reliable sources. So far, the article has only two citations. One lists his position and ten papers (but not what impact they have had in his field of study). The other quotes him in response to an environmental story. Neither provides any proof that he is a notable academic.Guinness323 (talk) 17:18, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank's for posting that Afd. That is the best way of deciding it. I do think he is notable and posted a keep entry. I believe that most articles undergo a process where they can be improved over a long period of time. I've seen several articles in the last 10 that have started from nothing and been restructured by repeated work over months or years to be something quite excellent. It will happen to this as well. I thought that other editor. scope_creepTalk 17:58, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Product reviews

Per

WP:REFBOMBing. Chetsford (talk) 19:55, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply
]

Given the relationship between NORG and NCREATIVE, Chet, I don't think you should present your personal POV as if it had policy WEIGHT. Perhaps you should remember these AfD outcomes Just a suggestion. ;) Newimpartial (talk) 20:03, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, I certainly remember those. However, in this case, although I disagree with Chetsford on a good many topics, I am going to have to agree with this one, at least in the sense that product reviews in and of themselves don't necessarily add much to an article about a company. That said, sometimes the reviewer does comment on the publisher and/or the designer a bit, and in those cases I think including a bit from the product review becomes a good idea. In this case, I think if you want to trim the review section a bit and work it into a section about the Silhouette system (which does not have its own article), that might be a good idea? BOZ (talk) 20:24, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Guinness323, does that seem like a reasonable solution? BOZ (talk) 03:26, 11 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I had actually come to the same conclusion, just had a busy couple of days with little time for editing. I have cut the review by two thirds, leaving only review of the two main game settings, not the supplements.Guinness323 (talk) 04:19, 11 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. I think if we can say more about the Silhouette system (which the article previously did not say much about), then I think the review as it stands really does help the article. :) BOZ (talk) 11:48, 11 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Finding old reviews

I am always happy to improve my BEFORE repertoire. How do you find those old board game reviews? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 00:49, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have a fixed formula, but there are several sites that often list old reviews. Grognard.com (ed. James Grohe) has been up for several decades, and over that time has amassed a huge amount of information about games and gaming, some of it indexed by title. BoardGameGeek sometimes lists reviews. Likewise the German site luding.org sometimes indexes has game reviews, as does the French website Guide du Roliste Galactique. And then there's the blunt force method of weeding through Google hits using a variety of terms. It is frustrating because I remember reading old fanzines and magazines and newspaper articles and family magazines with games articles but all of it is gone. So much material from the 1960s and 1970s has been lost because paper magazines and fanzines were destroyed before the age of scanning. I have a fairly large collection, but when I think of the stuff I threw out or gave away to friends years ago... Guinness323 (talk) 03:12, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The Dice Tower, it's likely notable, even if perhaps not reliable...). Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:02, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply
]
I don't know of a resource that compiles reviews for board games (BGG does not, to my knowledge), but for RPGs both RPGnet and RPGgeek list known magazine reviews of products on individual product pages; I do not always remember to check both, because one will often list reviews that the other does not. I wish that I knew of such a resource for board games. BOZ (talk) 04:08, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

FITS (board game) - notability?

Also ping User:BOZ. For some reason, I keep thinking this may be notable (possibly I am thinking about one of many games named after similar acronyms, however). One thing going for it - it was nominated for SdJ, that's something, but not enough. BGG page states it won only one award (2010 Golden Geek Best Abstract Board Game Winner). Again, I doubt that's enough. But I can't find any good sources. No de wiki page. How about you guys? Anything? Or should I just go ahead and PROD it? Or maybe AfD, given it won something? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 05:52, 14 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It has a lot of high profile nominations in 2009/2010:

2010 JoTa Best Family Board Game Nominee 2010 Golden Geek Best Family Board Game Nominee 2010 Golden Geek Best Abstract Board Game Winner 2010 Golden Geek Best Abstract Board Game Nominee 2009 Spiel des Jahres Nominee 2009 Spiel der Spiele Hit für Familien Recommended 2009 Golden Geek Most Innovative Board Game Nominee 2009 Golden Geek Best Party Board Game Nominee 2009 Golden Geek Best Family Board Game Nominee 2009 Golden Geek Best Children's Board Game Nominee 2009 Meeples Choice Award nominee

Spiel des Jarhes is perhaps the top annual prize in gaming, so being nominated as one of the top 5 games of the year in two different categories is notable.

Then there's also all of these reviews, mostly from Europe:

FITS - review (mlodygiercownik.pl) 2 years ago Review · Polish German review: 4Players.de (www.4players.de) 7 years ago Review · German French review on Jeux de NIM: Fits (www.jeuxdenim.be) 7 years ago Review · French Review of FITS by Casual Game Revolution (casualgamerevolution.com) 7 years ago Review · English Portuguese Review with Rules explanation on dreamwithboardgames (dreamwithboardgames.blogspot.pt) 7 years ago Review , Rules · Portuguese French & Dutch rules (spelarch.khbo.be) 9 years ago Rules · Dutch · French Dutch review on speldatabase.be (speldatabase.be) 9 years ago Review · Dutch German review - Ratgeberspiel (www.ratgeberspiel.de) 10 years ago Review · German German review - das-spielen.de (das-spielen.de) 10 years ago Review · German German review - Cliquenabend (www.cliquenabend.de) 10 years ago Review · German German review - games we play (gamesweplay.de) 10 years ago Review · German German review - FAIRspielt (www.fairspielt.de) 10 years ago Review · German German review - Ludoversum (gesellschaftsspiele.spielen.de) 10 years ago Review · German German review - Spielmonster (www.surrealist.de) 10 years ago Review · German German Session Report on Westpark Gamers (www.westpark-gamers.de) 10 years ago Session · German

I don't have time to work on it this weekend, but could add some of these to the article Monday. I'd say between the Spiele des Jahres nomination and the reviews, there's enough to indicate notability.Guinness323 (talk) 06:50, 14 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Guinness323, I am in no hurry, but my concern is that a) in most topics in general, award nominations tend not to be seen as sufficient for notability, even if they are many, unless the awards are super famous so that nominations are enough. I don't think even SdJ qualifies here b) reviews need to be from RS. And since you linked Polish one first - this seems just like random blog, no evidence this is written by multiple people with any peer review involved. So while I think we should try to save this, there is the possibility the result will be just not sufficient. But in this case, given your review above, I'd do AfD, not PROD, anyway. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 07:23, 14 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

AfD or not?

I'd appreciate your thoughts about the following board games were PRODs were recently declined:

Deadlands Noir?

Hi there. We haven't been formally introduced, but I've seen your coordinating convos with BOZ. Anyway, given some of your recent edits, I wondered if you had any interest in working on Deadlands Noir? I was gnoming some genre categories recently, and was really feeling the absence of an article about that game, but my Pinnacle-awareness is fairly close to zero. Is there any chance you might be interested in moving that up your list of priorities? There should be some reviews, I would think, and it was an interesting genre statement when it was published. Anyway, no pressure - just hoping to plant a seed so I don't have to do it all myself. :) Newimpartial (talk) 17:30, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My specialty is more of the 1970s-1990s era, but I took a look, and I question whether there is enough for a standalone article. Several podcasts and videocasts about it, but those won't be considered RS. One review here that might be considered RS, another one on rpg.net here but not much else. (I assume Kickstarter articles are considered primary sources.) Cool idea for a game though. Guinness323 (talk) 22:18, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah; Kickstarter would never be independent, sad to say. And anything too recent for Designers & Dragons poses more problems for sourcing than most RPGs before 2014. Thanks for the two reviews, and maybe I'll try building something up from the publisher page or one of the other game lines. Newimpartial (talk) 22:27, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Starstone again

I've been DMing Troubles at Embertrees which I've converted to 5e recently (players love it) - I recall what you said about Starstone but were any of the three segments particularly good or all merely okay.....Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 21:09, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It's been a number of years, but as I recall, all of them were okay, but required a lot of reading and prep by the DM -- there's a lot of NPCs with backstories that can connect into the plot or interact in various ways with the PCs. Guinness323 (talk) 22:02, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, have found that with the Embertrees module - just to get my head around everything going on...on plus side, technology means I can blow up a digital version of the module to large size so I can read the goddamn thing easily (WD magazines would print modules in really tiny print....)
