What to do?

Kings Heath primary school... you deleted this when deleting mass edits by the article creator. I noticed this as I was trying to add a speedy tag. My question is: it is an article about a school, which means A7 doesn't apply. However, the article had nothing but a hyperlink... I think this is G11 and/or A3. Thoughts? (I am watching this page, so please reply here.)Timneu22 · talk 16:37, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

A1 or A3 would work, I suppose. Given the creator's history, I would have gone with G3 personally, but that can be rather subjective. I just used Special:Nuke to, well, nuke all their creations. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:41, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
There really should be a CSD with "nuke". I'd love to see an A99: Pure crap. This would be used on articles that have so many violations that they just need to be removed! — Timneu22 · talk 16:44, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
That'll be the day! We could create a category named "candidates for speedy deletion as total shite"! There are few things more annoying than something that should be a clear speedy but doesn't quite fit a specific criterion. Like that school "article", for example! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:50, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
This is where I mention blatant
WP:NOT#HOWTO articles, that should have CSD criteria, and that only a few admins will delete using IAR. But I won't mention it this time. — Timneu22 · talk

RE: a thought

Hello, HJ Mitchell. You have new messages at White Shadows's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

--White Shadows There goes another day 19:19, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

I noticed that you declined speedy deletion of the above article, saying that it was "not spam". "Reduce human induced climate change by promoting corporate, governmental and personal social responsibility through sustainability, education, and empowerment" and "The goal is to connect students with influential business leaders to provide mutually beneficial networking opportunities" seems largely an intention to promote the company. Goodvac (talk) 20:51, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

It's my opinion that it's not blatant enough for G11, but you're welcome to PROD it or AfD it. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:53, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Copyediting!

Hi, I'd like to invite you to participate in the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. In May, about 30 editors helped remove the {{copyedit}} tag from 1175 articles. The backlog is still over 7400 articles, and extends back to the beginning of 2008! We really need your help to reduce it. Copyediting just a couple articles can qualify you for a barnstar. Serious copyeditors can win prestigious and exclusive rewards. See the event page for more information. And thanks for your consideration. AirplaneProRadioChecklist 00:39, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Deletion Request

Would you mind deleting this page? I put a CSD template on it yesterday, I think, and it hasn't been deleted; I'm in an impatient mood today. :) Thank you. ~~ Hi878 (Come yell at me!) 22:42, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

And while you're at it, deleting this and this would be good too. :) ~~ Hi878 (Come yell at me!) 22:45, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

You better hurry, because I keep finding more. :) this now, too. ~~ Hi878 (Come yell at me!) 22:48, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Yes, I can delete them, but why? It would be helpful if you used the "rationale=" parameter in g6 template! Hint, hint! ;) not that I don't trust you, but I need some rationale! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:51, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
I use Twinkle, so I don't get the rationale parameter. :) Anyhoo, here are the reasons: The first link was merged into another archive, so that page should be deleted, since it is now empty. The second and third, I was going to use them for all of the archive pages, so I didn't want to have the whole thing on each one, but then I found a different template, so they are no longer needed. The last link was a comment that ws put in the wrong place, so I moved it to a correct one. ~~ Hi878 (Come yell at me!) 22:54, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
And for the record, I disagree. I think my signature is better. :) ~~ Hi878 (Come yell at me!) 22:55, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
Oh, my sig is so much better! ;) I've deleted 3- 2 of them were G7-eligible since you were the only author, the other, for licensing reasons, should probably just be redirected to wherever the content is now. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:58, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
I think we'l have to agree to disagree. :) Anyways, the Archive link should be deleted, because nowhere links to it anyways, and it will be used later for something else. And, Archive 2 was deleted for the same reason, and you don't want to go against precedent... ;) ~~ Hi878 (Come yell at me!) 23:00, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
Indeed we will. I'm right, though! ;) If you insist, then, *poof*, gone! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:03, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

True, but that involves lots of fiddly markup that I don't have the skill or the patience for! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:08, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

TamilNadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL)

Dear Mr.HJ Mitchell,
Thank you very much for reviewing my

First Article
on Wikipedia. Shall i know the main reason (though u have mentioned as naming conventions) for changing the Topic of the article from TamilNadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL) to TamilNadu Newsprint and Papers. I like to emphasis on retaining the name as TamilNadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL). More Importantly atleast (TNPL) at the end has to be retained for the following reasons.

  • As i'm from Tamilnadu, i like to tell u that TamilNadu Newsprint and Papers Limited is very well known as TNPL in Tamilnadu .
  • Many people well use TNPL instead of TamilNadu Newsprint and Papers while searching in wikipedia as well as in Google.

Kindly Pls consider reverting back the name of the article. Thanking You!!! Raj6644 (talk) 05:06, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Hello. :) Welcome to Wikipedia. The reason I moved it is that we don't normally put abbreviations in page titles- for example, our article on the BBC is at
redirect all other likely titles to the first, as has someone has done for TNPL. If there are any other names that should redirect there, assuming the page doesn't already exist just add the code: #REDIRECT [[Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers]] (copy it as it appears, not from the edit window) and save it. I hope that helps. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts?
09:19, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
  • (talk page stalker) This policy documents how article names are decided, and indicates that we should avoid abbreviations in article names. Personally, and you may know this better than me, I'd have thought that readers would be searching for either "Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited" or "TNPL" (but not both). Incidentally, "TNPL" will take readers straight to the article, so readers who search for "TNPL" will find what they're looking for. Does that help? TFOWR 09:20, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Hi,HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? & TFOWR,
Thanks your Explanation!. Little disappointed when the name is actually changed to a different Name. I agree with your explanation for TNPL. Atleast it can be renamed as Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited instead of Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers, because you cant name BBC as British Broadcasting without the suffix Corporation. I abide with ur words if u like to continue the same way the article was. thank you!!! Raj6644 (talk) 09:54, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Adminship

I just wondered if you ever thought about nominating me for adminship?Gobbleswoggler (talk) 16:07, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

I think you'd probably benefit from another few months' experience, but I certainly think you could do a good job in the near-ish future. You might like to get more involved with behind-the-scenes things and generally get yourself noticed. Regardless, going up at RfA so soon after your last one (and the one before that) is probably not a good idea. Being an admin isn't that much fun, anyway, so you;re probably better off just focusing on being a good editor for a while rather than aiming for admisnhip, which isn't, as we're so often told, a trophy. On another note, I noticed you don't have rollback (I was sure you did, or I would have given it to you ages ago)- would you like it? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:17, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Don't remember the flight number, but it was a BMI 737-400 that suffered an engine malfunction. The pilots were new to the -400, having had much previous experience on the 737-200. Misguided by smoke in the cockpit (the -200's air conditioning was run from only one of the engines, while the -400's is run from both engines) and neglecting to read the engine vibration indicators (which would have plainly indicated which engine was malfunctioning, the flight crew proceeded to shut down THE WRONG ENGINE. Eventually, the bad engine failed completely, and the flightcrew was unable to restart the other one before hitting the M1 short of the runway. I'll go look for the flight number now.

Log redaction

Hello HJ Mitchell. I've restored Youareabellend (talk · contribs · block log)'s block log as it's extremely outside the criteria for redacting block logs. I'd suggest you restore the username from the page histories, as it's also well outside the CFRD, but I'd also be happy to do that myself, or follow any review you request. Thanks. -- zzuuzz (talk) 22:48, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Well, it's hardly the most pleasant of names, but I suppose it was borderline for RD2. If you want to restore them, I don't object. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:53, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
Indeed it's not particularly encyclopaedic. However I think it's important to retain an element of transparency to the wider community (that's also their opinion apparently). The only redaction I won't restore is in the BLP, where some suggestion could be made that it'll cause some offence. -- zzuuzz (talk) 23:02, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
And hey, when I blocked him I assumed he was just stating a fact... because I am a bellend. ;) ~ mazca talk 23:03, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
Personally user names like the one in question will cause offence and are uneccassry. Though there are few guidelines about user names ones like this should not be allowed in my name. He/she could instead have YAAB which could mean lots of things and if the user wants to think of it as meaning youareabellend that's fine but in its current format it is offensive since some people consider 'bellend' as profanity. Lil-unique1 (talk) 23:06, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
The criteria for redaction is grossly offensive, not merely plain offensive and unnecessary, or even hardblockable. Some people find the word fuck offensive, but we're not going to redact that everywhere we see it. -- zzuuzz (talk) 23:12, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Your response to my RfA !vote

I just noted your edit here. I am, indeed, in error, but I'd like to convince you that the proper implement with which to whack me is a trout, not a cluebat.

When I saw the sample CSD, there was no question it required deletion. I think the candidate, while answering other questions well, absolutely missed this, which is why I expressed more concern about this answer than other answers which seem to interest others. My comment about a few minutes was based upon an error. I assumed, correctly, that someone tagged the article with a CSD, indicating that it needed to be deleted. I incorrectly assumed they knew why it needed deleting. Under my incorrect assumption, had a sysop declined the deletion, I expected that the original tagger would poke their favorite sysop or post an adminhelp template and point out that the declination was in error. A second sysop reviewing it would not likely make the same mistake. However, what I missed was that the original tag was A7, so while the original tag asked for deletion, they didn't catch the gravity of the situation. Under that scenario, they might react to the declination with a shrug of the shoulders, and it might take some time before it was caught again. Again, I was wrong, but I didn't want you to think I missed the seriousness of the issue.--SPhilbrickT 00:03, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Fair enough. Thanks for the note. You'd be amazed at some of the crap I see at the back of end of the PROD category- some of it would be an obvious A7 if I didn't make a point of avoiding A7 like the plague, but then you get the altogether more alarming ones that make you think "how on Earth has that sat there for a week or 10 days" and "I hope nobody found that in Google"! You're right, though, that an A7 decline wouldn't be considered a big deal by mist people and even the mist persistent would probably just PROD it, but admins need to be able to spot the G10s disguised as A7s- in RfA and "for real". It's a shame that an otherwise fine candidate was caught out by a few not-altogether-difficult lapses, but perhaps it will instil something in him that he'll find useful in a future RfA and, hopefully, as an admin. Possible sock of LeedsBloke10

Hi HJM. You have LeedsBloke10 (talk · contribs) on your monitor, so I would like your opinion on the freshly minted user TwistedFerret (talk · contribs). They show a similar disregard for sources, first in their desire to change Mads Hauge's first name to Matt, even though there are lots of sources for the former, secondly, and more relevant in this revert of my revert on LeedsBloke10. Cheers, Favonian (talk) 19:35, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

From the Pixie Lott fascination, there's probably enough for an SPI, but I don't fancy blocking as a duck just yet. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:00, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
I agree. Let's give them some

IP vandal

Thanks for blocking the first one, but she came back with a new one [1]. I have no doubt this is SkagitRiverQueen and she edits from her cellphone, the IP number changes every time she dials in. Thanks. Wildhartlivie (talk) 19:44, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

HJ could block them, but that might require a rangeblock for the cellphone IPs. User:Rlevse is a checkuser and can institute rangeblocks (and I think he is online), give him a message about this as well. - NeutralHomerTalk • 19:47, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Moonriddengirl has protected your talk page, so hopefully that's the last you see of pain-in-the-arse-IP socks. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:59, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks to all of you. Much appreciated. Wildhartlivie (talk) 03:34, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Copyedit request for Strip club

Hello. The article strip club has just been peer reviewed, and I have tagged it with a copyedit request ahead of a planned FAC submission. It would be very helpful for a person outside of of the U.S. to do a copyedit since the most persistent article feedback is it is too U.S.-focused. Thanks in advance if you can find time to take a look. -Wallanon (talk) 04:30, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Good morning. You should check that nomination again if you have the time and are not asleep and it hasn't been checked and so on and on and on. I've done some work and he is very important. --

--Well done! ;) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:26, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Ha ha, well done. I think you need to find a "This user talks to himself" userbox. - JuneGloom07 Talk? 12:45, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

In The News

Don't forget there are a userbox for "In The News" entries like these. You can user the userbox here: {{User In the News Contributor|#}} Change the "#" to whatever number of ITNs you have. Now, please note, this won't list each and every single one you have contributed to, just a number. I don't think there is a userbox that will do that, but I could be wrong. - NeutralHomerTalk • 14:00, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

I know, but I quite like recording my recognised content on the top of my userpage, though that row of ITNs is getting quite long! :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:04, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Ah, gotcha, well, you could do it like User:TonyTheTiger does on his userpage and there must be a userbox for individual ITNs. I will keep looking and see what I can find. If there is, you could do like User:Wehwalt has with his, featuring his GA and FA boxes. - NeutralHomerTalk • 14:12, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
I might look into other methods of keeping track of them when the row gets a bit longer. Now, what I really want is a userbox that says "this user has edited the Main Page"... HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:17, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Ah, OK. Well, I could build one of these for ya. *breaks out the mad scientist lab*  :) - NeutralHomerTalk • 14:19, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Excellent! ;) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:20, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
{{User:Neutralhomer/Userboxes/MainPage}} Let me know if you want the colors changed or something. - NeutralHomerTalk • 14:30, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! I've given it pride of place! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:34, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
You're Welcome! :) Let me know if you ever need a userbox for something that isn't available and I will be glad to make it. - NeutralHomerTalk • 14:36, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Talk:Hide the Decline

Talk:Hide the Decline is being discussed at the arbcomm case Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop. Could you perhaps restore it for the duration of the case? I don't think we need the page itself William M. Connolley (talk) 16:16, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Hide the Decline

Hi, you deleted the article,

Hide the decline. I would like to continue to work on improving the sourcing of this article in my user space. Can you please direct me to the article's contents before the deletion so I can copy it to my user space? A Quest For Knowledge (talk
) 16:45, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

I've userfied it to User:A Quest For Knowledge/Hide the Decline, complete with history. Hope that helps. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:49, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Thank you. A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 16:54, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Can you also move the talk page to my user space? A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 17:11, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
I'd prefer not. Why do you need it? You can create a redirect if you want to be able to see it conveniently William M. Connolley (talk) 17:23, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Well, maybe I don't. I'm using that talk page as evidence in the ArbCom case and didn't want to lose any of my diffs. But it looks like the diffs still work. A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 20:27, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Rollback

Question

Hello HJ, I was wondering how you get those small icons on the same line where it says, "USERTALK or USER: HJ MITCHELL" (sorry if I spelled it wrong), also how to I "customize" a template. Thanks! Joe Gazz84 (user)(talk)(contribs) 20:55, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Hey, I have lots of things going on on my userpage, but I copied most of it from other people! If you open up the edit window on my userpage, you should see some big messages in hidden comments <!-- THAT LOOK LIKE THIS --> that mark where things start and end, hopefully they'll make it clearer, but if not, just ask again. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:31, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
I will try, if I have anymore questions I will ask. Thanks Joe Gazz84 (user)(talk)(contribs) 23:09, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Explanation for Deletion

Hello HJ,

I wanted to understand why my content for topic "Hagglund" was deleted by you. I tried to put in the right references, but this is the message I got in the log:

""11:43, 3 July 2010 HJ Mitchell (talk | contribs) deleted "Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Hagglund" ‎ (G12: Unambiguous copyright infringement)""

If there is still a copyright infringement in my page, please let me know first and I will be happy to change it! Also, I would like a content of the page I put together (because I did write most of it and the part that wasn't written was referenced).

Thanks, Lscjw1 Lscjw1 (talk) 08:19, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi, the problem is that it was infringing the copyright of a third party, and if that were picked up by Google, it could get the Wikimedia Foundation (who run Wikipedia) into legal problems. Your efforts are appreciated, though, and my best advice would be to attempt to re-write the article from scratch, but I can email you the deleted content if you'd like. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 11:48, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Hello HJ, thanks for response. Please email me my post to: <redacted>. I am a new user to Wikipedia and am not familiar with a lot of the rules. PLease let me know specifically what is copy-righted?

Thanks, Lscjw1 Lscjw1 (talk) 11:38, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Will do. I removed your email address, though, because a lot of people visit this talk page and I wouldn't want you getting spam! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 11:41, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Adminship II

I have clearly nominated myself a lot of times and have been looking forward to becoming one but get a bit upset when i find out i'm not. It would mean alot if you nominated me for adminship. All the best,Gobbleswoggler (talk) 13:01, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

I don't mean you nay disrespect, far from it, I have a lot if respect for what you do here, but I'm afraid you're just not ready for adminship at the minute and another RfA, especially one so soon after the last, would not have anything pleasant in store for you. If you'd like some good feedback on your editing, you might like to try
an editor review. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts?
13:09, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
I'll be a tad more blunt. Repetitively begging for a nomination-besides being poor form- almost proves you aren't ready for one. Besides, the mop is absolutely no fun at all, mopping Wikipedia is as enjoyable as mopping my kitchen; but someone has to do both of them. Courcelles (talk) 13:35, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Agree with Courcelles. Many people think that adminship is a higher status, but they are mistaken; admins just have a bit more tools/buttons in their hands. MC10 (TCGBL) 01:46, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Can you take a look...

At 1980 Winter Olympics medal table. I feel like the prose has some issues, but I'm just not seeing them, would you mind running a fresh set of eyes over this (very short) article? Thanks. Courcelles (talk) 15:22, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Sure, I'll have a read of it. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:27, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, there's a potential FLC there, once more pictures are added, and the prose is polished. Courcelles (talk) 17:02, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
More sources wouldn't hurt. Look at the bloody mess I just had to clean up at Rafael Nadal! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:04, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
I actually have one more source than the latest FL of the type- 2010 Winter Olympics medal table- and a lot more happened in Vancouver than Lake Placid, anyway. (2002 Winter Olympics medal table is an anomaly because of the number of changes after the Games ended, which Lake Placid didn't have.) Nadal... gracious. Better you than me- that match was so boring I finally got the Lake Placid article organised in the 2nd and 3rd sets. How does a match that boring produce that much of a mess? Courcelles (talk) 17:23, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
I've added a few more sources, but now I need a second opinion on something else. The captions of my four images are four people nowhere mentioned in the prose. Should I cite the captions, even it is a bit gaudy, and let FLC tell me to remove them if need be? Courcelles (talk) 08:02, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
Where've you been hiding and leaving me to deal with the yellow ITN timer? Can you not find a way to work it into the prose? Other than that, you'd have no choice, but it really should be a last resort- inline citations in image captions just look, well, aesthetically displeasing. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 08:06, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
Me? I've been at the periphery of an FAC (that looks to have me back at the library tonight), getting that medal table ready for FLC (which I'm about to the point of just nominating and dealing with what comes), writing prose for another eventual FLC, and besides that? Ignoring Wikipedia. As to the prose, meh. Medal tables are about the countries, not the athletes, and there's nothing that notable about those three athletes to this list other than those were the three that had good free images, and were multiple medalists (either in Lake Placid or prior Games). (In other words, if I work Irina Rodnina into the prose, who only won one medal in 1980, would that be undue weight by not covering all the other medallists, which fits in the (as yet unwritten) List of 1980 Winter Olympics medal winners much better). Courcelles (talk) 08:14, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Request for feedback/assistance

Hello,

We recently "met" when you added the rollback and reviewer rights to my account. I understand you are very busy, but if you have a moment, please could you give your opinion, and take any further steps you feel appropriate (pass this on to others who may be able to give feedback etc), on a dispute that has resurfaced at Talk:Dhanurasana.

Some months back, I posted a request for feedback on a couple of the reviews pages but got no response - obviously not complete enough or sensational enough compared to all the sexual and living-persons stuff going on there!

Many thanks, Trev M   20:00, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Hey, I'm probably not the best person to deal with that- if I can help it, I try not to go wading in knee deep when I have no idea of the history. If it's a "simple" content dispute between a few editors, there's a
WP:EAR. Let me know if I can be of more assistance- I can't take on anything too chewy, but I can point you to places where you might be able to get better help. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts?

I get the picture – thanks for your help, busy man! See you around, Trev M   07:54, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
