Hello. I saw your recent edit on the lead of the Hindu Mythology article. I agree with you that the sentence as it was written, perhaps in entire content too, was not appropriate for a lead. However the article is a very large article and a single sentence lead is also not appropriate. I would like to know if you have any suggestions or ideas on how to best summarize the article in order to improve the lead. I think it was still two sentences, but the topic is perhaps so vast that the only lead that could do it justice must be as vague as possible - however, I've put in a bit more which might do some more justice to the issue, though still not really ideal.

Thanks for the link to the site. I see nothing wrong with discussing Australian Aboriginal astronomy, but there cannot possibly be any way that we can write that Australian Aboriginal astronomy is the oldest in the world - a fairly meaningless statement. If it is the case that the oldest astronomical engravings might be Australian Aboriginal, then we can put that in, with proper sources... but otherwise I do think it's just silly. Astronomy in the sense of describing formal physical laws of the heavens? Surely not. In the sense of keeping an in-depth account of the workings of the heavens, even if superstition takes over? Well, early Mesopotamian records etc. are surely more deserving of that... In the sense of keeping a note of the cycles of the moon? Well, their African and Asian ancestors would certainly have done that too, like anyone who spends any time outdoors... and there's a supposed lunar timekeeping bone in Swaziland that has been put forward as much older than anything else (though it's extremely iffy, to say the least, like anything like this would be before the invention of writing).

The site does seem to be fairly partisan, with very little in the way of peer-reviewed academic formality. People always use superlatives too easily - people who find even an ancient toothpick in their country tend to jump to calling it's 'the world's oldest toothpick!!!' without ever checking the world's other prehistoric toothpicks... though at least toothpicks are well-defined physical objects...

Could you please explain why you altered the lede to the article on fynbos? You do not mention your biological accomplishments, but you surely must have been aware of the nature of fynbos before undertaking to alter the text. What gave you the impression that all fynbos has ericoid leaves and that this is the circumscriptural attribute, rather than ericoid habit, that gave rise to the name? Fynbos DOES mean 'fine bush', this much is certain. The original statement had no references, but there are several references to the leaves being the factor. The original page didn't have refs for this - mine merely simplified things, so it didn't either. If this is more complex than thought, and you are a great biologist who can insist this without references, then please accept my humble apologies and don't get arrogant and bellicose because of one brief edit. If you take issue with the details of what seemed a harmless simplification, then re-edit. I haven't even gone back to that page. I did not think a long, hyper-parenthetical etymological digression was appropriate for the lede, though a better-written clarification would be fine lower down. I also detect a soupçon of arrogance and bellicosity. "You do not mention your biological accomplishments" - I have none, and don't claim any. What was that meant to mean? "Circumscriptural habit"? Um... quite awesome word you're using there... please give me a reference to a definition. Now, no-one mentioned an edit war. Please 'assume good faith', and Wikipedia will be a nice place for everyone. I have had a particularly hard couple of months just with the people I know in real life, so the last thing I need is to get harangued by people I've never met, thanks. P.S. etymology is not biology.

I am sorry that you have been having a hard time. I hope things soon improve. I received your note out of context on my talk page, so I found it rather mystifying. It took me a while to track it down. It might help if you were to re-read the article before replying to this; for one thing it now includes fairly comprehensive references. As for circumscription, you can find it discussed most relevantly at that link or at Botanical nomenclature, Type (biology), Sensu and a number of other articles in WP. The remark on your biological accomplishments was meant to mean that if you have none, that might explain a misunderstanding, but that if you were biologically advanced, I would like to know just why the term apparently was used circumscripturally in such a curious way; no patronism was intended. I half-accept your half-acknowledgement of civilities. Are you a biologist with major accomplishments? Maybe you are - I can genuinely say I don't know, but this is irrelevant. However, I know the word 'circumscription'. I also know the word 'circumscriptive'. I do not know the word 'circumscriptural'. I also think you'll find the word is 'patronisation', not 'patronism'. Which brings us to the more relevant issue: LANGUAGE. I am also aware the article has changed, and I don't give two hoots to be honest. I just did not appreciate a pretentious and presumptuously combative rant about an utterly trivial, innocuous and quite defensible change to something that certainly needed some sort of changing. Or should that be a 'pretentive and presumationally combatty rant'?

Hi. The 18th edition of Ethnologue just came out, and if we divide up our language articles among us, it won't take long to update them. I would appreciate it if you could help out, even if it's just a few articles (5,000 articles is a lot for just me), but I won't be insulted if you delete this request.

A largely complete list of articles to be updated is at Category:Language articles citing Ethnologue 17. The priority articles are in Category:Language articles with old Ethnologue 17 speaker data. These are the 10% that have population figures at least 25 years old.

Probably 90% of the time, Ethnologue has not changed their figures between the 17th and 18th editions, so all we need to do is change "e17" to "e18" in the reference (ref) field of the language info box. That will change the citation for the artcle to the current edition. Please put the data in the proper fields, or the info box will flag it as needing editorial review. The other relevant fields are "speakers" (the number of native speakers in all countries), "date" (the date of the reference or census that Ethnologue uses, not the date of Ethnologue!), and sometimes "speakers2". Our convention has been to enter e.g. "1990 census" when a census is used, as other data can be much older than the publication date. Sometimes a citation elsewhere in the article depends on the e17 entry, in which case you will need to change "name=e17" to "name=e18" in the reference tag (assuming the 18th edition still supports the cited claim).

Remember, we want the *total* number of native speakers, which is often not the first figure given by Ethnologue. Sometimes the data is too incompatible to add together (e.g. a figure from the 1950s for one country, and a figure from 2006 for another), in which case it should be presented that way. That's one use for the "speakers2" field. If you're not sure, just ask, or skip that article.

Data should not be displayed with more than two, or at most three, significant figures. Sometimes it should be rounded off to just one significant figure, e.g. when some of the component data used by Ethnologue has been approximated with one figure (200,000, 3 million, etc.) and the other data has greater precision. For example, a figure of 200,000 for one country and 4,230 for another is really just 200,000 in total, as the 4,230 is within the margin of rounding off in the 200,000. If you want to retain the spurious precision of the number in Ethnologue, you might want to use the {{

}} template. (First parameter in this template is for the data, second is for the number of figures to round it off to.)

Dates will often need to be a range of all the country data in the Ethnologue article. When entering the date range, I often ignore dates from countries that have only a few percent of the population, as often 10% or so of the population isn't even separately listed by Ethnologue and so is undated anyway.

If Ethnologue does not provide a date for the bulk of the population, just enter "no date" in the date field. But if the population figure is undated, and hasn't changed between the 17th & 18th editions of Ethnologue, please leave the ref field set to "e17", and maybe add a comment to keep it so that other editors don't change it. In cases like this, the edition of Ethnologue that the data first appeared in may be our only indication of how old it is. We still cite the 14th edition in a couple dozen articles, so our readers can see that the data is getting old.

The articles in the categories linked above are over 90% of the job. There are probably also articles that do not currently cite Ethnologue, but which we might want to update with the 18th edition. I'll need to generate another category to capture those, probably after most of the Ethnologue 17 citations are taken care of.

(b) Sponsor a language-based contest that aims to address existing Wikipedia content gaps.

The objective of the program is to provide laptops and internet stipends for existing editors who need support to contribute more actively. 50 basic model Acer Chromebooks and Internet stipends for 100 contributors are available for distribution. Provided resources are the sole property of the beneficiaries and should be used for the betterment of the movement.
