Nice Meeting You and Chatting about WiRs!

The ideas we talked about really gave me some food for thought. Glad to see the directions you're taking, let's definitely keep the dialogue open about connecting these different programs into Open Ecologies/Communities!

Also, I wanted to mention I had an idea to help you to determine how to support the Education program. I could talk with the other Regional Ambassadors about an informal poll to get some ideas of where we can see need for support already, ways OCLC could help.

FYI: I'm leaving a message using the new WP:WikiLove feature, it's that little heart button at the tom right menu, next to the search. ^

HighBeam

Hello, I am sending this message to editors who signed up for the Women's History Month Edit-a-thon. Please help spread the word. HighBeam Research--an online, pay-for-use search engine for newspapers, magazines, academic journals, newswires, trade magazines and encyclopedias has agreed to give free, full-access, 1-year accounts for up to 1000 Wikipedia editors to use. HighBeam has access to over 80 million articles from 6,500 publications, most of which are not available for free elsewhere on the internet. Aside from a free 7-day trial (credit card required), access to HighBeam would cost $30 per month or $200 per year for the first year and $300 for subsequent years, so this is a wonderful, free, no-strings-attached opportunity. To qualify, editors must have at least a 1 year-old account with 1000 edits. Please add your name to the

WP:HighBeam/Applications account sign-up page if you are interested. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 18:34, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply

My new project - WWC Hi Merrilee! I hope all is well. I wanted to stop by to share a new project with you that I am developing, called the WikiWomen's Collaborative. I would love your input about the project.

WWC needs you!
  • You can find the project page here.
  • On the talk page, you'll find a number of questions I'm seeking input on. I'm especially seeking thoughts about hosting the space off of Wikipedia (in the WordPress section). I hope you will join in on the conversation.
  • Finally, this project will be developed with volunteers from around the world who want to engage and support bringing new women to Wikipedia. If you think you'd like to be involved in some capacity, that'd be awesome. We're still working on developing roles, but, you can learn more about volunteer opportunities here.

Thank you for the consideration and I hope you'll participate in developing this exciting new project to bring more women to Wikipedia!

You're invited to the first-ever Wikipedia Iconathon!

Help build the visual language of Wikipedia at the first ever Wikimedia Foundation/Noun Project Iconathon

The Wikimedia Foundation is partnering up with the Noun Project to run the first-ever Wikipedia Iconathon on April 6th at WMF headquarters, and you're invited!

What is an Iconathon: An iconathon is a co-design process where Wikimedia staff, the user community, and a few graphic designers collaboratively discuss what symbols could best represent a concept for an icon – for example, what's the best icon for New Editor, Revert or Oversight? Sketches will be converted into high fidelity icons by Noun Project graphic designers, and will be released under a free license for use by anyone on the Internet. Help build the free encyclopedia icon set that anyone in the world can share and reuse!

Logistics: The event runs from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm on April 6th at the Wikimedia Foundation office in San Francisco. Follow the signs at the door! We'll have plenty of paper and pens/pencils for sketching.

How to sign up: Please register here using the code 'wiki'

Displaying Dewey numbers on Wikipedia pages

Hi Merrilee. I've just noticed that you've joined the library project and branded yourself as a helper. I also note your connection to OCLC, and so I though I'd bring this suggestion to your attention. I first floated the idea of linking Dewey number to Wiki articles on Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Templates#Linking_Wiki_articles_to_library_classification. There was some concern about the issue of copyrights and the attitude of OCLC, which was further discussed at Wikipedia_talk:OCLC#Displaying_Dewey_numbers_on_Wikipedia_pages User:Ocaasi said he would talk to OCLC, but as yet there has been no feedback. IF, and I know it is an important IF, this would not cause a conflict of interest or cause trouble at work, then perhaps you might care to ask the question to the right person. Thanks, Martin of Sheffield (talk) 20:49, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for getting in touch! As noted in the discussion, Dewey is (and has been for some time) CC BY-NC-ND. I'm not as familiar with the Wikimedia guidelines for IP as I should be -- is this really a problem, and if it is, would specific permission be enough? I hope you saw the recent news that OCLC has declared OCNs to be public domain, because we want to encourage the use of our identifiers. Let me know what you think will work and I'll do what I can to move it forward! Thank YOU! Merrilee (talk) 21:01, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
To be honest I hadn't seen either of these items. I was aware that OCLC, and before them Forest Press had been quite enthusiastic in protecting copyright; they sued a hotel for using Dewey and I thought that publishing beyond the first 1,000 divisions could get you in trouble. If that is no longer the case then I welcome it, and there probably is not a problem. I just didn't want to drop Wiki in the copyright/IP mire. Thanks, Martin of Sheffield (talk) 21:20, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I thought, and I could be wrong, that the hotel suit had to do with trademark, not copyright (predates my employment with OCLC, so was off my radar). Info about OCN's being in the public domain here: http://hangingtogether.org/?p=3318. The current editor of Dewey is quite a techie and also very enthusiastic about new uses of Dewey, so I'll bring this to his attention. If there's anything I can do to help advance it please do get in touch. I'm speaking to User:Ocaasi tomorrow and I'll mention we touched base about this! Merrilee (talk) 21:58, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. If you haven't so far, have a look at the sandbox pages (linked from the discussions) and feel free to use them to show to the editor. Also have a look at User:Martin of Sheffield/sandbox4 where I'm working on a rewrite of the Hartley colliery disaster. I've included one of the templates as a demonstration. I use Abridged 13 at home, so I've used it in this example! I've had a look at the OCNs, and whilst they are off this topic it is to be welcomed, provided (IMHO) that they don't cause confusion with ISBNs. As an aside, I didn't realise that the hanging together quote was Ben Franklin, but it doesn't surprise me; he turns up everywhere. I'm off to bed now; this side of the pond it is 23:30. Regards, Martin of Sheffield (talk) 22:31, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

An online source page that you might like to review

Hi Merrilee, I can't track back exactly how I found you (I was working on an AFD page on a bus accident and looked at some others and saw your name, possibly connected with the list of Closed Stack Libraries up for deletion. Anyway, I have recently created this page Nurimedia for the online Korean journals, et al company that so many of our U.S. academic libraries use. I was thrilled to see that OCLC had taken the plunge and added them! I am not affliated with the company, I volunteer for the Korea Project. Thought you might find it a good read and please, let me know if there are any additions or corrections needed.

Because I'm a nut for details, I created the "Partnerships and subscribers" section where I added the OCLC info., because I could not determine some affliations. I can't get a handle on whether OCLC subscribes to Nurimedia, or whether their data is simply catalogued for "lending" and "borrowing" libraries to make their own financial arrangements for articles or online data they get from each other, via ILL. And I think one news article said it was for International Users only. What does this mean? I'm so boring! Hope you find this interesting. Cheers!--Bonnielou2013 (talk) 05:07, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. Five minutes to help make WikiProjects better

Hello!

First, on behalf of WikiProject X, thank you for trying out the WikiProject X pilot projects. I would like to get some anonymous feedback from you on your experience using the new WikiProject layout and tools. This way, we will know what we did right, and if we did something horribly wrong, we can try to fix it. This feedback won't be associated with your username, so please be completely honest. We are determined to improve the experience of Wikipedians, and your feedback helps us with that. (You are also welcome to leave non-anonymous feedback at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject X.)

Please complete the survey here. The survey has two parts: the first part asks for your username, while the second part contains the survey questions. These two parts are stored separately, so your username will not be associated with your feedback. There are only nine questions and it should not take very long to complete. Once you complete the survey I will leave a handwritten note on your talk page as a token of my appreciation.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you, Harej (talk) 17:49, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Merrilee.

I would like to invite you to present a talk at Vanderbilt University Library during Open Access Week next month. We are planning on holding two edit-a-thons for OA week, and would like to have a speaker come and address the community about how Libraries, the Academy, and Wikipedia intersect. Your work for OCLC make you a great choice for this. If you are interested, please get in touch with me here - or via email (I also sent you a message at your OCLC email address).

Thanks, Ed - Warga1 (talk) 15:24, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Procedural revocation of account creator right

Hi Merrilee, this notification is to let you know that I've removed the accountcreator user right from your account as it was granted for an edit-a-thon that has now concluded. This revocation is procedural and is not a result of misuse of the tool. Should you need this right to assist with edit-a-thons moving forward, please make a request at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Account creator. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. Bay Area WikiSalon series kickoff, April 27

Please join us in San Francisco!
A Wikipedia panel discussion about journalism
Panel discussion at a recent Wikipedia & Journalism event.

The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts in the San Francisco Bay Area will gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas. We have two brief presentations lined up for our kickoff event in downtown San Francisco:

  • The Nueva Upper School recently hosted the first ever high school Wikipedia edit-a-thon. We will hear what interests them about Wikipedia, what they have learned so far, and what they hope to achieve.
  • Photojournalist Kris Schreier Lyseggen, author of The Women of San Quentin: The Soul Murder of Transgender Women in Male Prisons, will tell us about her work and how she researched the topic.

We allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. We will have beverages and light snacks.

Please note: You must register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on this point.

For further details, see here:

We make sure to allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. Free Wi-Fi is available so bring your editing devices. We will have beverages and light snacks. We will also have:

  • A brief report on Pride edit-a-thon recently held at the San Francisco Publice Library, coordinated by Merrilee:
What topics might we cover in a follow up?
Find out more about resources your public library provides to help with editing (hint, it's more than just books!)
Special announcement (secret for now but come and find out more!)
  • Join in on an in person Wikidojo!
Are you curious how your peers approach writing a Wikipedia article? This exercise, pioneered by Wikipedians Nikola Kalchev and Vassia Atanassova in 2015 and conducted in many places around the world, will help us all - from first-time wiki users to veteran Wikipedians - share ideas, while building an article together. If you have ideas (relating to Bay Area history, ideally) about a new article we could build (stubs and short existing articles are fine), please submit them ahead of time to coordinator Pete Forsyth. (User talk page or email is fine.)
Announcements and impromptu topics are welcome, too!

Hi folks,

We would like to invite you to this month's Bay Area WikiSalon. The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.

We make sure to allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. Free Wi-Fi is available so bring your editing devices. We will have beverages and light snacks. We will also have a brief presentation for your education and possible enjoyment:

  • Former EFF intern Marta Belcher will discuss crowdsourcing her Stanford Law School graduation speech using a wiki. The "WikiSpeech" was the subject of prominent national media attention in 2015, and more than half of her classmates contributed to writing and editing the commencement address via a wiki.

Please note: You should register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on the I.D. part. Please support the Sustainability Initiative!

Please support the Sustainability Initiative!

Hi, Merrilee! Please allow me to follow up on a project that was discussed at the Wikimedia Conference in Berlin a couple of weeks ago:

I am writing you to ask for your support for the Sustainability Initiative, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. Over the past two years, more than 250 Wikipedians from all over the world have come together to push the Wikimedia movement towards greater sustainability.

The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has recently passed a resolution stating that the Foundation is committed to seeking ways to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment. Now, we are working with the Wikimedia Foundation staff to have all Wikimedia servers run on renewable energy by 2019.

In order to demonstrate that this is an issue that the community really cares about, I would like to ask you to sign the project page as well. Thank you! --Gnom (talk) 15:56, 14 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

WiR

Hello, I am applying for a grant to support the position of WiR at the University of Pittsburgh. I have been their Visiting Scholar for two years now and they would like to bring me on to support their efforts in engaging in adding to the 'sum of knowledge' and provide training for librarians, faulty, and students so that they may participate in contributing. I've done training even though it is not part of the scope for a Visiting Scholar. Would you be willing to contact me off wiki and give me advice? Please email me. Thank you very much and Best Regards,

Hi, no objection whatsoever. If you look at the article, you will see that we were editing at the same time. I thought the newspaper article was more notable than the Facebook link, no? Take a look. Please feel free to revert if you think I was wrong. Merrilee (talk) 03:58, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, totally missed that line without the section header! My bad. Yes, I agree about using the article instead of the Facebook post. - Eponymous-Archon (talk) 04:00, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think it needs its own section, but let's see how the story develops. I was heartened to see that someone else had taken an interest. Thanks for checking in. Merrilee (talk) 04:12, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Merrilee. I happened to notice that you were given the

I want to stress that this isn't in any way a judgement on your editing or article creations (which seem excellent), just clearing up a clerical error. Thanks. – Joe (talk) 11:49, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Oh sure, of course, I thought it was revoked ages ago. That was for an editathon where we expected a lot of people and I was the only "real" Wikipedian on hand (yikes). I rarely create new articles but when I do I actually love the small things that get added and improved by NPP. <3 Merrilee (talk) 15:51, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Call to submission an essay for a special issue of JLIS.it on LIS/Wikipedia

Dear Merrilee, I'm a librarian/wikipedian from Italy, I'm the coordinator of Wikimedia Italy for school and university.

We are planning to publish a special issue of JLIS.it, the Italian Journal of Library, Archives, and Information Science, focused on the topic of the collaboration between Library, Archives, and Information Science sector and Wikipedia (and Wikimedia projects). We plan to publish this issue next september, in the vol. 9, No. 3 (2018). JLIS.it is an academic journal of international scope, peer-reviewed and open access, aiming to value international research in Library, Archives and Information Science. JLIS.it secures: open access to contribution (authors retain copyright), peer-review by Italian and international experts, and wide dissemination of published contributions both in the national and international area, with the help of specific tools. For more details about JLIS.it focus and scope, please read our manifesto. We ask your precious contribution to this special issue on LIS/Wikipedia, by proposing an essay in english of maximum 40.000 characters on the topic of Librarians for Wikipedia: guidelines and forms of collaboration. Your proposal has to be submitted before next April, 15th.

From that moment we will manage the review and we recommend that you review the About the Journal page for the journal's section policies, as well as the Author Guidelines. Authors need to [(https://www.jlis.it/index.php/jlis/user/register register] with the journal prior to submitting, or if already registered can simply log in and begin the 5 step process. Your paper will be reviewed by an expert, to provide you with a competent opinion on your contribution. A review should give authors suggestions, if needed, on how to improve their papers. The peer-review process is managed with the OJS platform. Thank you for your support to our project!

p.s. I know about this, I think it's a nice coincidence! :-) --Luigi Catalani (talk) 11:46, 4 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

News On Wiki check-in

Hi there! Thank you for your interest in our campaign to improve the public's knowledge about local newspapers. Time has flown since we got going in September, and our six month campaign ends in just a month! We'd like to check in with you about work you have done, or any articles you'd like to write or edit to do before we wrap up.

We published a

mid-campaign report
, highlighting strong work from several Wikipedia editors (both new wiki folks and veterans); contributions from Kristy Roschke's journalism course at Arizona State University; and strong engagement from groups like AfroCROWD and Wikimedians of the Caribbean.

As we begin our final push, we would love to learn what you have been working on, or help you with any challenges. We're hosting several informal video conference sessions in the next week. (If that format is no good for you, just let us know.) We'd love to hear what newspapers have caught your interest, any articles you've already written, and also any kind of support you could use in writing up newspapers that lack Wikipedia entries. We'll focus especially on newspapers of the Caribbean in our final month, as we continue to work on Black-owned U.S. newspapers, and newspapers of Washington State. Please register for one of these Zoom meetings. If these times don't work for you, or if you hate Zoom, etc., just reply here (please include the text "[[User:Peteforsyth]] and [[User:Shanluan]]" so we get notifications), and we'll find another way to connect with you.

We hope to hear from you soon! -Pete Forsyth (talk) 00:50, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to Local Wikimania Event in San Francisco this Friday

Hi!

Wikimania is happening and hopefully you're enjoying the sessions. While it's fairly last minute, you're warmly invited to participate in the local Wikimania-themed meetup in the Wikimedia Foundation office this Friday (tomorrow!). You will have to register in advance, but we would love to see more people from the WikiSalon community participate! For more information and registration, please check out meta:Wikimania 2022/San Francisco Meetup.

The event will involve hacking, teaching, learning, and celebrating and we'll have snacks. We will have the opportunity to watch live sessions at Wikimania together in the afternoon. The rest of the day we'll have opportunity to participate in the hackathon, and we may have some on-demand workshops/learning sessions.

In case we run out of space, it's first-come-first-serve so let us know soon! Hope to see you there.

DYK for Acoustic Atlas

On 26 August 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Acoustic Atlas, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Acoustic Atlas at Montana State University Library helped to create a public domain archive of sounds from Yellowstone National Park? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Acoustic Atlas. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Acoustic Atlas), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Happy holidays!

Happy New Year!

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year, Merrilee!

The other day, I was having a conversation with someone about holiday cards and social media. It occurred to me that, in the years since I left Facebook, the site I use most to communicate with people I like isn't actually a social media site at all. If you're receiving this, it's pretty likely I've talked with you more recently than I have my distant relatives and college friends on FB, at very least, and we may have even collaborated on something useful. So here's a holiday "card", Wikipedia friend. :) Hope the next couple weeks bring some fun and/or rest. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 18:38, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
