Hello

Hi! Thanks for uploading images, especially related to Kolkata. Could you please specify the sources of the image, otherwise those could be questioned. For example, the old port images/Howrah bridge images, you should cite the source (the US GI photo collection). Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 06:01, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A large chunk of those images are from this site. See the image page of Image:HooglyKolkata1945.jpg to understand the copyright status of these images. You can just do copy-paste of the information regarding the other photos.--Dwaipayan (talk) 08:25, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bangla Wikipedia

Hi Sandipan, Have you looked into the Bengali version of Wikipedia? You can visit it at http://bn.wikipedia.org . We need more Bengalis, especially those from West Bengal, to work on the articles there. Right now, we have 15400+ articles, but many of them could benefit from more volunteers.

You only need to have unicode fonts enabled in your machine to see Bangla. We have integrated Bangla phonetic typing into the edit windows there, so no extra software is needed for typing.

Hope to see you there. Thanks. --Ragib 08:20, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Howrah Bridge image

Hi! Thanks for asking. Well, usually images are placed in a right-alligned manner, often left alligned, and rarely centrally (unless it is a panorama image - with much more width relative to height). This is usual in wikipedia (though not a rule). That's why I right-alligned the image. Regarding the size, I removed size specification from the images, because that would allow reader's preference to work. Readrers' preference is the size at which the end-user's computer is set to view images. You can choose your "preference" by clicking "My prefernce" that hovers on the right upper corner of Wikipedia screen. Under "Files" option of "My Preferences" is the option for chosing your preferred image size and resolution. Not specifying the image size is helpful because it allows the wiki software to justify paragraphs/article structure/appearence suitably to every user. Otherwise some user may find some image is obstructing the flow of text. Still, some images need size-specifications sometimes. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 10:02, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Commons

Go to http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page. Register. Upload files. Be careful about licensing. That's it. Will talk in detail later. Am in extreme hurry today. Got an exam tomorrow :(--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:27, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Advice

Hi! I again happened to log in and saw the changes you made in

featured article (and also a sensitive article!), and it is better to discuss in its talk page if you plan to make any major change in the article. You will see in the talk page of India detailed discussion/disputes on the content, including images. So please declare/discuss edits you make in the article, including the rationale. Also, the article India is highly summarised, with proper links to appropriate daughter articles, like History of India, Geography of India etc. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 11:10, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply
]

Despite best of intentions, one can land up with disbalancing the article! For example, a few days back, I added a reference to the Revolutionary movement for Indian independence in the "History" section and declared it in the talk page. The addition was soon responded by others that it should be externally referenced, as the sentence reads as if Congress and revolutionary groups were equally involved in the independence movement. So far, I have not been able to produce any reference, and the addition now faces reversion. I am telling you this because it is a very sensitive article, with huge internet traffic. So every change should be carefully placed. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 11:14, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your edits to India page

Dear MonsterEagle, Thanks for your contribution to the India page, which regrettably has been reversed. Please discuss discuss them on the Talk:India page first. Please also read: Talk:India#Edit_in_.22History.22_section and Summary of Request for Comment in late January. The latter link lays out some reasons why it is preferred that any forthcoming changes to the India article (a featured article and "flagship" article for the India portal) be discussed on the article's talk page first.
