Hi, I didn't know who ask this to but : Why are KP Botany's User and Talk page deleted? I can see his last edit was on October 21st, but now he's gone... Pro bug catcher (talk • contribs). 17:06, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
- KP Botany's last edit to his/her now deleted user page replaced it with {{Db-userreq}}, with edit summary "and user talk page too, please". I obliged. Apparently he/she was resigned from Wikipedia. I perused his/her contributions to see if there was any dispute or issue that may have triggered his/her departure, and found nothing. Hesperian 01:15, 27 October 2007 (UTC)]
Pupa
Hi, Pro Bug Catcher.
I may very well be able to help with Latin, although I'm not quite sure what you are concerned about. Maybe an overview will help.
I glanced at the article, and no misuse of pupa jumped out at me. It means both "girl" and "doll", with the translation "doll" clearly being preferable in the context, as given.
The nominative singular is pupa, as given (the nominative being the case we use for something that is the subject of a sentence). As far as I can see it is used this way throughout. In Latin, the nominative plural, also as used in the article, is pupae.
The reasoning behind using "pupas" for the plural, the alternative plural given at the beginning of the article, is that once a word has been adopted into English, it should simply follow English rules. Here, that would give us "one pupa, several pupas", just as if it was an English word. Since no English speaker can possibly be expected to know the correct plural (or accusative, or preterite, or whatever) in all the languages from which English has borrowed words, this seems to me to be a very valid choice, even though in the case of languages I know it sets my teeth on edge. However, it remains very much a matter of personal preference, and choosing to stick with the Latin form is both traditional and defensible.
If someone really wanted to follow through on the Latin, "of more than one pupa" would be puparum, "from more than one pupa" pupis, and so on through the six cases, but I doubt there's anyone these days who thinks we should go that far.
Hope this answers your question, but if not, you know where to find me. Awien (talk) 18:29, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
- Personally, I would go with either "Cockchafer pupa" or "Pupa of the Cockchafer". Awien (talk) 19:20, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
Template:Cite book
Thanks for catching that, and for fixing it - it looks like the pipe trick doesn't work in that template. I'll watch for that as I continue to dab the Doubleday article. I'll also look to see if there's anyone heavily involved in work on that template, and see if they can fix the problem. Mlaffs (talk) 14:42, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
- By the way, it's not a template problem after all, although it is a pipe trick issue. Turns out that the pipe trick doesn't work within ref tags. Mlaffs (talk) 18:21, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

I really like your questions to the Fish Quiz. This is one of the more diverse games we've had. Since you also seem to be a heavy contributor to mainspace, I thought you would do well with rollback, which is basically a quick way to revert edits. Do not use it in edit wars or good faith edits. Missing taxobox tag
Yeah, I was expecting that. That I chose article and not Talk was to make those stand out that could not be tagged normally (i.e., where "taxobox-missing=yes" did not work/apply). I did not intend this as a permanent solution, but rather so that the problem can be recognized and dealt with.
Basically, start at Category:Taxobox cleanup go through the trees, and see different taxobox implementations. It's a mess, even after I collated what I could. Arthropods are not handled like other animals, microbes require yet another way of tagging etc. Note especially where the "missing-taxobox=yes" param can be put in the Talk infobox, and where it cannot or is not.
I like the way the tagging is implemented via the Talk infobox parameter, like in Category:Plant articles needing a taxobox. It probably ought to be implemented for all taxa. Taxa which I tagged on the article and not on Talk are those which are presently problematic (i.e. those where the Talk infobox code needs to be updated).
The ultimate aim, I think, is to abolish the "missing-taxobox" templates entirely (I think there are/were 4 in total), in favor of a common Talk infobox parameter, as has already been completed for plants. It is not a template newbie users would use anyway; anyone who'd worry about missing taxoboxes presumably is able to add a parameter to the Talk infobox. Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 04:46, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
- I'm all for abolishing the template too. I've asked User:Justin to implement the parameter in Viruses and Arthropods banners, as I'm no feeling confident enough in my coding capacities (which aren't much more than copy/paste) to do it myself. Are there other banners it needs to be implemented in? Pro bug catcher (talk • contribs). 15:04, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Advice on Common rock densities
Hi, I'd like to know what to do when I encounter articles like Common rock densities. I can't find anything in the deletion policy saying it should be deleted, but it's orphaned, uncited, WP:listcruft, and useless as is for rock identification. Merging it into all the rock articles might be best, but since there are no references it'd be like creating it anew. Pro bug catcher (talk • contribs). 02:28, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Flemish
Hi, I am Belgian and I can assure you that Flemish can mean anything: the Flemish dialects (East Flemish, West Flemish, French Flemish), any Dutch dialect of Belgium (including Brabantian and Limburgish, which continue deep into the Netherlands) or just Dutch —but then just in a Belgian context. The language of northern Belgium is Dutch, just as in the Netherlands. It would be like saying that Céline Dion doesn't sing in French, but in Québecois. Addressing the Dutch spoken in Belgium as Flemish is originally a gallicism (flamand), and is actually linguistic nonsense. Regards, --Roofbird (talk) 15:10, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi. Thanks for the message. If you can find more information, I'd be happy to consinder undeletion, but I doubt that the task will be easy as it may require searches in specialist printed guides (a lack of response to a single email query won't be sufficent). Your best starting point may be BAT, who might be able to help with an artist's name. Also, I think there may well be collectors' societies as these cards are quite popular. The UKPIO won't be able to help, since all they can do is to point to UK law, which we know already. Under UK law there is I am afraid no obligation for BAT or anyone else to respond within a paricular time, or indeed at all, as the Freedom of Information Act does not apply here. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 22:08, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
- Well, "reasonable enquiries" is not defined by statute, and would be considered by the court on a case-by-case basis. Evidence of trying to obtain the information, even if no reply is received, would certainly count. My point was that there are undoubtably specialist collectors' societies in the UK and perhaps elsewhere which may well hold details of the artists who were employed by Players at the time, or which may be able to suggest a name based on the style. It is likely, in my view, that a court will require a high level of enquiry before concluding that the image is anonymous. Have you, for example, searched for relevent printed material on card artists in the British Library catalogue? If material exists there which has not been looked at, or even looked for, it is unlikely that enough has been done. Even if you cannot get there yourself, others can. My guess is that concentrated investigations of a few weeks, both on and off line, would be the sort of level required. So it's not easy.--MichaelMaggs (talk) 00:10, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
