Arthur Gould

Seems like a decent plan. There are some wording changes needed but if you think it has a shot at FA then I accept your opinion. I've never pushed an article to FA before but I'm happy to help in anyway I can. Cheers FruitMonkey (talk) 14:24, 15 June 2013 (UTC)

Anytime I find anything on Gould the first think I look for is evidence of when he played for the Trojans and I assume Hampshire County while he was in the area. Lots of books state that he played for the team, just not the dates. I have found this here on the Trojans site, which states he ended his career with the team. Which sounds a trifle odd, as after 'The Gould Affair' he agreed to retire from rugby and the RFU would have gone for his throat if he played again. Also with a nice new home in Newport and a job for life why move to Southampton. Sounds more likely that he may have played for Southampton while waiting in the area for a boat to take him to a job abroad. Then again here is a newspaper article claiming Gould played for Bristol after the affair, and this is the first time I have hears this story. Thank you for the comments about my work on the above article. I was reading a library book on him and was surprised at how short the article was on him at Wikipedia. Considering his importance to NZers and also how in his forties he had volunteered to serve in WWI, I decided to expand the article. Hello and thanks for taking the time to review the Ronan O'Gara article but I think you are being a bit too strict on some things like the references. I know your an experienced at reviewing rugby articles but it's impractical to ask me to get a source for an Irish rugby game played in the 1990's. The match I am talking about is O'Gara's debut against Connacht in 1999. You have asked for a source that said it was his debut but I have searched for an hour and there is none. Is it not sufficient enough that it's the earliest match that you will find O'Gara lining out for Munster? All I ask is you please don't fail it for something I can't possibly fix. I'm sorry, but verifiability is a very strict criteria for a good article. If something can't be verified, then it really shouldn't be included. Just leave that statement for now (maybe add a {{citation needed}} tag to it so I/you remember that it's not referenced yet), and I'll see if I can find a source. There were a lot of statements that were not supported by the sources provided, and the criteria doesn't allow exemptions for material that is difficult to source. Try to sort everything else out, and leave that statement for now. I'm sure a reference exists, it's just a matter of finding one. - Shudde ^talk 12:03, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

I understand not useing the flag icons, but I don't think it is necessary to add thier ITM Club, usually every national rugby union has the more professinal club listed, i.e the Super Rugby team. Hi Shudde. A peer review sounds good. I've added a page number to footnote b, so hopefully that should solidify that one. But the 1958 book you mention is actually the physical copy of cite 8, the Welsh Biography online. It was first published as "The Dictionary of Welsh Biography Down to 1940", with the editors supplied. It was then turned into an electronic format which we are citing from with Gould's specific article in the the 1958 Biography written by Molewyn Williams. Not sure how you would circle that square. I think its reasonable to revert once with an explanation in the edit summary before serious Talk has to be entered into. I agree that the section is a bit dodgy and I wasn't especially enamoured of the material myself, but I thought the reasoning for deleting it was worse, because it went purely on an opinion of notability, and when comparing it to the rest of the items the notability or otherwise was not at all cut and dried, so I was looking for better reasoning.Mdw0 (talk) 10:42, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

Do you have any sources/details about Alfred Pullin (known as "Old Ebor") who wrote about rugby from around 1890 - 1930 in the Yorkshire Post? He was quite famous in his time, but details of his rugby writing (as opposed to his cricket writing, about which quite a lot exists) seem scarce. I've asked at the rugby pages too, but thought I'd ask you directly as he covers your "period" of rugby. Sort of... Hope all is well, and I should finish with the PR on Gould in the next few days. Sorry for the delay on Gould, I'd have hoped to finish by now but it got away from me a bit. On a related note, I noticed reading the 1890-93 section that a few bits rang a bell, and then I noticed a familiar name. Andrew Stoddart is possibly coming up on my cricket "list", and I recognised a match from his biography. Now, there is a lot of stuff out there on his cricket, and his biography by David Frith covers his rugby career pretty thoroughly, but I wondered is there an overview of his rugby career anywhere? Hope you don't mind me jumping in a little on this one. Stoddart is fairly well-covered in Alan Gibson's great book "The Cricket Captains of England" and he quotes from an 1892 book by someone called Arthur Budd who described him as "the most agile and finished wing three-quarter who has done service for England" and Gibson calls him "undoubtedly one of the outstanding players of his brief period". I can't find anything which really gives an overview though in any of my rugby books here. --Bcp67 (talk) 12:19, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

Great writer, Alan Gibson, and very much associated with the west, Bristol & Somerset etc - he was also a rugby commentator for the BBC, so I reckon he was on firmish ground with his rugby knowledge. Sorry for the late reply. As luck would have it, I was given Sean Fagan's book on the 1888 British Isles for Christmas, and the first chapter is about Stoddart! The book has its flaws, but there is quite a lot there on Stoddart. He was definitely one of the most talented players of his time and was the star of that 1888 tour. There are probably some other sources I can dig up, and I'd be happy to provide what I can to the article. BTW I looked into Pullin but didn't have much luck -- I replied regarding that at

Thanks for the email. Yes, it's a good source especially on his family. We need to make sure we aren't just repeating ourselves as the vast bulk of the early information is taken from books we are already using, mainly Smith's work on the history of the WRU. It's that time again! Starting on March 1, there will be another GAN Backlog Drive! There will be several changes compared to previous drives:

• This drive will introduce a new component to it; a point system. In a nutshell, older nominations are worth more points than newer nominations. The top 3 participants who have the points will be awarded the Golden, Silver, or Bronze Wikipedia Puzzle Piece Trophy, respectively.
• Unlike the December 2013 Backlog Drive, earning an additional barnstar if you reached your goal has been removed.
• The allowance to have insufficient reviews has been lowered to 2 before being disqualified.
• An exception to the rule that all reviews must be completed before the deadline has been created.

Also, something that I thought I would share with all of you is that we raised $20.88 (USD) for the WMF in the December 2013 drive. It may not sound like a lot but considering that that was raised just because we reviewed articles, I would say that's pretty good! With that success, pledges can be made for the upcoming drive if you wish.
