Hi - I just reread your comment about GA QPQs, and I noticed that you mentioned that you don't participate much in DYK because of the requirement for QPQs. If you like, I'd be happy to work with you on that - if you'd like to nominate something for DYK, I could do the QPQ for you, and just make a note in the nomination that that's what we've done. I'm not sure it's exactly 'by the book', but I've seen examples in the past where one person has made the nom and someone else has done the QPQ, and nobody seemed to be concerned about it, so I think that would be fine. Girth Summit thank you. That is a wonderful offer. There will not be many. I used to nominate nearly every article I did, but the platform got increasingly stressful and I stopped submitting anything other than GAs. It isn't just the QPQ, but the entire format I find somewhat non-collegial. I write from an academic background, so putting citations on every sentence, when in fact an entire paragraph came from the same source, is not only weird, but also redundant. I don't write about popular culture, so the claim that there isn't mass appeal is rampant. IMO, it is a platform that is not so much about improving an article or making it accurate, as it is about making it intriguing or attractive, which seems to be the opposite of why articles are written for an encyclopedia. Girth Summit I reviewed it, and am so sorry that I cannot approve it, as it was well-written and interesting (and even better, made me learn something). I should state outright I know diddly squat about religion and its terminology, but the odd turn of phrase saying it was called a cathedral, made me wonder why they didn't just say it was. Apparently one needs a bishop to be a cathedral. Anyway, you can modify the existing 2nd hook, or propose another, or just kick me to the curb entirely and have someone else review it. Thsmi002 I have no idea if there just isn't more information (lots of Canadian records aren't digitized) or if it is the problem that I have difficulty finding what is digitized because I am in Mexico. It could also be that her name is so common, or that she is a quilter. Truly quilters are hard to find sourcing on, perhaps because for many years they were considered craftspeople and not artists. It also is curious why her archives was first deposited in 1957 and there is no finding aid for the Glenbow Museum Archives. Were her records as an interpreter given to them? Do they have samples of her quilts in their collections? Seems odd that they don't specify what they have. At any rate, for now, we don't seem to have enough for GNG so I added her info to Marule's article and made a redirect. I am sorry I couldn't find more. SusunW (talk

Hi - thanks for the review, I think the hook we agreed on is an improvement on the earlier ones. On a separate matter, I wondered whether you might be interested on working on an article that I'm planning to write. I came across a person - Margaret Macpherson Grant - while researching the history of a church I'm writing about, and found the story fascinating - see this source for details. I generally write articles about historic buildings, and haven't done many biographies, but her story is tragic and compelling and I thought I just had to write about it. It touches on various sensitive issues though - nineteenth-century assumptions about 'feminine' behaviour, homosexuality, the slave trade - and since I'm not super-familiar with writing about these areas, I thought I'd reach out to a more experienced writer such as yourself to see whether they would be willing to help.

If you are interested, I thought I might put together a list of sources and write up the bare bones of a draft, and then ping you to see if you are able to add anything in terms of sourcing, improving the text, thinking about what sorts of categories or projects it needs to be attached to, that sort of thing.

Girth Summit You give me far too much credit. You had most everything in it already. I've only tweaked the text, added a few details here and there, and formatted some of the references. I typically format all of them to Harvard style as then I don't have to "read around" them in the text. But, just doing the books allows you to input the page numbers, which is necessary for a GA. I just found a source which is quite interesting...Is Alexander Cray Grant our guy? Apparently he wasn't the only Grant family member who went to Jamaica--looks like they also owned property/slaves in the Danish colony of St Croix and in Sierra Leone. I just read the article - very interesting. I think you're right though, probably not our guy: I haven't seen 'Cray' mentioned in any of the sources, also, while I don't know how they calculated their figure, all the 'historic inflation' calculators I've used put the £24,000 that our guy received at substantially more than £1.29 million - closer to double that figure. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography sources are really good - you've filled in a lot of blanks that I was worried about, like her parents' names (and I didn't even know that she had a brother!).

How well versed are you in image copyright stuff? I've never uploaded a picture before, and am not really clear on my mind on the requirements. I've managed to find a couple of pictures of her on-line, and given the date I assume they are out of copyright, but I'm not sure how all that kind of stuff works - it would be really great to get a couple of pictures though for visual appeal. Girth Summit I always start with a records search, WP doesn't like primary records, but secondary sources easily misstate information. I found her birth record first and by searching for her and her father, found the ODNB entry. Odd that it didn't come up in a search for her. The ODNB only mentioned that her brother died in India (I wonder if it was really in the West Indies???) so I looked him up in primary records too. Weird thing about Alexander Grant son of George, I cannot find him. The University College London piece says his parents were George and Janet Donaldson, their records show children: Margaret 1776, Mary 1780, William 1782, James 1784, Robert 1787, Charles 1790, and Anne 1793. Weird? Why would they register some children and not others?

That is odd about the children. The book about gravestone inscriptions also makes the connection though - apparently George's gravestone actually says on it words to the effect of 'this memorial was put here by his son Alexander Grant of Aberlour House on such and such a date'. Perhaps he had more than one name? E.g. William Alexander Grant, but went by Alexander and dropped the first name when he was older? (It's not uncommon nowadays in Scotland for people to go by their middle name - I know a few people who do that, but I can't speak for back then)

So, there's the image of her here (the article that started this whole thing off!). I thought I'd come across another one while searching for sources, but I'm not seeing it now that I look again. There is a picture of the queen visiting Aberlour Orphanage - it's possible that I glanced at it and assumed it was her earlier on while searching. Girth Summit Clearly the original photo was published, but the issue is when and where? What you have is evidence that it was published in 2014, which means the only way it can be uploaded is as fair use (for a dead person). Let me do some checking in the very few British databases I have access to.

Girth Summit, I find nada. So, you can either e-mail the blog [email protected] and ask them the source of the original photo, find a copy of that source and clip the picture yourself and upload it to commons if it was published prior to 1924. If it was published after 1924 for Britain for a known author 70 years after death, or an unknown author 70 years after creation or first publication. The easier option is to clip the blog image and upload it as fair use, justifying why you are uploading a non-free image like I did the one for Iwańska. For the house, either you have to find one that someone else took and released all rights to, you have to take one yourself, or you have to do the publishing research, same as above. I've e-mailed the blog people about the photograph, I'll wait to see if they get back to me. I'll dig around later and look for an image of the house - I expect there is one on meta, there are thousands of pictures taken from geograph.co.uk which I usually use to illustrate my articles, I'd be surprised if there wasn't one showing the house (it's a Cat A listed building).

As an aside - the DONB site that you were using, do you have independent institutional access to it, or is that something I can get through the WikiLibrary thing? I've never used it, but have just filled in an application for access to Newspaper Archive to see whether I can get at any of the original reports that were referenced in the LBS blog. Girth Summit I live in far southern Mexico and have zero access to any public libraries and have no affiliation with any "institution". All the databases I have access to, if they aren't free on the web, are through the WP library. (Note for OUP there are 2 different sections, Scholarship and Journals, I think scholarship is what gets you access to ODNB). I checked newspaperarchives.com for Grant but found nothing on either Alexander or Margaret. (Was hoping to find some information about him in the Jamaica Gleaner). There are articles about the trial in newspapers.com, but apparently between Sunday and Monday my subscription expired and I am waiting on them to renew it. SusunW (talk) 21:41, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

Girth Summit I think it is ready to be moved to mainspace. Do not submit it to AfC. If you cannot move it, I will. We can always add the images later, but it will need them if you want to nominate it for GA. I've done some with only one photo for exactly these same reasons, just can't find any appropriate images. I think you are fine as long as you don't try for FA. Rosiestep, thank you so much. It was Piotrus who brought her to my attention and made sure that the Polish links and names were proper. (That noun conjugation thing always sends me for an expert's guidance). Her ties to indigenous communities (and Mexico) were fascinating to me, so I wanted to write it. Doc has said he will review the GA when I nominate it. Been trying to find some additional images, but it is hard to focus with my medicine head for this sinus infection. Me too, it's an energy drainer. I'm glad you didn't catch anything on your trip too. Always makes travel difficult if you are sick. Okay, being sick just makes everything more difficult. I didn't travel anywhere and it is just as frustrating to deal with ;) Fortunately, I got a lot of indigenous women added this month before it arrived. Valereee, honestly my issues with DYK truly have nothing to do with you and long precede your involvement over there. I used to contribute every article I wrote there, so am very familiar with it. Then it got to be all about the subjective idea that it had to have broad interest, i.e. my dead women are usually too limited in scope as not popular culture figures/topics. And then the minutia focus kicked into high gear with redundant sourcing requirements, i.e. citing sentences individually when the whole paragraph came from the same source (never done in academia unless a quote is involved). (The straw that made me walk away the first time was actually being asked to prove that Mrs. and Madame were synonymous in the U.S. south when referring to 19th-early 20th century black women.)

As a QPQ reviewer I've seen a lot of substandard stuff, which makes it ironic that there is only sometimes serious scrutiny of the accuracy of hooks. It's very inconsistent and seems to me that interest (maybe even shock value) over quality is the focus, with a dash of rigidity and subjectivity and thrown in to make it incomprehensible. (Heck, this kerfuffle didn't even involve an article I wrote, but it still was confusing to me as a reviewer, as to how I could "fix" the issue.) I quit DYK for over a year and then decided only to contribute with GAs. Even now I don't nominate them all, and have walked away swearing I'd never send another article there numerous times. It is just not worth it to me, as my experience is that it is a non-collaborative platform. Every time I think maybe it's changed, try it again, I see that it hasn't. And when an issue comes up with one I've done the review on, I'm always willing to help continue the process. And, yep, it's inconsistent. It's the deadlines. You might be interested to known that I have made a considerable number of redirects to all the lists starting "List of female..." etc., etc. from "List of women..." as I know like most Americans you prefer to use "women" as a qualifier rather than "female". In addition to helping with search, I hope this will encourage editors to add their new biographies to the appropriate lists. I was really surprised how many there were. One of these days, it might be useful to make "female" redirects on all the ones using "women" but for the time being I'll leave things as they are.--Ipigott (talk) 15:51, 16 September 2019 (UTC)

Our search engine is not very intuitive and I often spend a lot of time searching for how to word something to find an article that I know is here, but I don't know the name of.
