To be honest, I do not see how these flags are being used for A.) decoration or B.) where in the MOS regarding flags it says that they should not be used in the education manner that they are being used in this case. I may be completely stupid (which I admit is entirely possible) but I cannot find where your usage applies in the links provided? The talk section I provided specific and lengthy discussion on the sister city matter where as the flag icon date provided by yourself contains nothing pertaining to this or the use of flag icon in community infoboxes. To be fair I did not read it all but did search using finder with no results.

The reason I reverted was that others had raised concerns, in which case they were reverted. I do not see the clarity on the matter at this time from your perspective. Though this is a small issue I would still leave it open to debate and would recommend a re-opening of discussion on one of the channels if you wish to revert. Those are just my thoughts though.

It's the very first item on the page. The heading is Flag and sub-national flag icon usage. The question is "Should flag icons of sub national and national countries be used in sister city sections to provide understanding of the location of the city?" There are then 11 editors against, 3 in favour and one neutral. More to the point, there was never any corresponding agreement or rationale to use flag icons like this in the first place. As I have asked you a couple of times now, what purpose do you think they served? --John (talk) 05:11, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

My impression of the flag icons in the section for "Sister Cities" is a sign of respect for the countries to which the cities belong. Speaking for Winnipeg only, I know from personal experience that this city is extremely proud of its multicultural heritage. Winnipeg is the home of Folklorama, the largest and longest running multicultural event of its kind in the world! People here still maintain strong ties to their culture and heritage from other nations.

Since partnerships between cities are a matter of mutual respect and cooperation, it only seems natural that one would acknowledge the flag of the country with which one is allied by a "sister city" agreement. As I am familiar with most flags of the world, through my elementary geographical education, it is a delight for me to see the flag that these countries so proudly fly in their homeland, and which I am also honored to display in conjunction with the mutual bond we have forged through such an alliance. This is the stuff that encourages world peace, as opposed to xenophobia and narrow-minded bigotry that view "other" countries' flags with disdain. So, I support and encourage the use of flags to denote with pride that we have an association with other countries.

Far from a "decoration", I think this helps to educate and enlighten the person who comes across this flag. Indeed, it makes the world a more hospitable place to recognize that each country has something to be proud of, and the flag is only a small token of that. If anyone objects to showing a small representation of a flag beside a country's name, then let them change their preferences in Wikipedia to "not show flag icons." That option is available >>

Skol fir, thank you for your contribution. I am glad you like flags. I like flags too. At the moment, there is a project-wide consensus not to use flags in the way you describe. This is because using the icons is seen to overemphasise these sections and overemphasise the countries. Is it really that significant what the flag of a country which has formed a twinning arrangement with a city in Canada looks like? Someone wishing to see the flag needs only to click through to the article on the country to see it. To the rest of us, these arrays of tiny flag icons are just a distraction. There the resolution was actually to remove the flags per Wangi's proposal and Ckatz's specification. It seemed to revolve around "Edinburgh". To summarize, I suggest that all flag icons be left in place where no controversy exists. As soon as there is a whiff of a war brewing, we scrap them at that page only. Also, there is nothing to challenge at

Hey since it is not really a big deal but the height and weight dating is used for those who have not reached an adult height. While it is a grey area where young men are in life at the 19-20 age, generally speaking they are considered adult which is why they are not dated at that age. This can often be observed by convention in articles across Wikipedia. Though I would not remove the age now if you like, they should be removed within a year or two since the heights will have leveled off by this point and weight changes will be minimal in sports, especially in one like snowboarding. The problem is what each "race weekend" should be called. We have races and distances, and somebody wins the cup (or event?). So far I've called it an "occasion". In the RM I've suggested "Competition 1", etc, and that is what ISU refers to them as. Maybe I should use that. What do you think?

what is the evidence that Canada has, as you say, "achieved the following quota places." The fis makes no such claim, they provide a "virtual" look at how the allocations would be right now, which is not the same thing at all. That would be similar to crediting NHL teams with playoff berths with twenty games left in the season wouldn't it?

Since freestyle quotas are dispensed by ranking like here it is quite transparent by the math that many of said quotas are not yet achieved. If you see value in calculating who has actually assured their noc of an Olympic berth then I could try that, but that would be getting into original research territory. I adjusted the wording on the 2014 Canadian Olympic page to better reflect accuracy, but did not want to compromise any of the work you did today.

I reversed the edit to see if there was a way to reduce the number of icons on the page. I thought about it, and decided to leave the flag icons in the participating teams section, but remove them everywhere else in favour of the team logos. Personally, I believe it makes the page look better, but as I stated when the edit was reversed, if that is not allowed, then I will reverse the edit I made regarding the team logos. Not a big deal at all - But in responses to this edit summary - the MOS for Canadian articles tells our editors "It is also not necessary for an article to provide a continual tally of intercensal updates for every year between federal censuses—only the current year's figure needs to be provided. The updated figures can be provided in the article body, but for the sake of consistency across all municipalities, the infobox's population = field should reflect the federal census figure." Hey, Krazytea. Thanks for the "thanks" on the Ryan Cochrane article. Having previously worked through the American and Aussie Olympic swimmers, I'm now plodding through the Canadians A through Z, updating them to the current standardized version of Template:Infobox swimmer, and imposing a measure of uniform formatting on the 216 articles in Category:Olympic swimmers of Canada. While it includes its share of one-hit wonders, the category also includes some of the greatest Olympic athletes Canada has ever produced, and most of these articles really could use some in-depth work. Sources for Olympic results are readily available, and we have Wikipedia articles that fill in the swimming medal history for the Commonwealth Games, Pan American Games and Pan Pacific Championships -- it would be nice if we could build all of them into solid C or B-class articles with every factual statement footnoted, etc. Any chance you would be interested in helping? After I finish updating the Canadian infoboxes, I'm moving on to do the same thing for the 260+ British Olympic swimmers . . . it may be months before I circle back to the Canadians again, but I'm certainly willing to help if someone else has the time now. I'm afraid but something discussed and decided by 3-4 people on Wikipedia does not constitute to breaking any rules. Moreover displaying club colors is keeping in line with the format followed by every other Premier League club with the Chelsea page just keeping in line with the format. Nah I get what you were trying to say mate. But I did believe that every club could display their club colors as banner as I had seen it on majority of the pages and personally I did feel it did add a bit of personal touch to every clubs page. But I do understand what you were trying to say and am fine with any decision that is taken. And also I'm sorry for the vandalism claim I'd made. I've gone ahead and removed the vandalism warning I had put in the paragraph above as I was just getting a bit pissed since there are vandalisms that do occur everyday but yours clearly wasn't. And I am a bit new to editing on wikipedia so still finding my feet. Cheerio.

Mainland China

Hey, I’ll repost my comment on Admanny’s talk page here. I think we should revert to using "Mainland China" for the sake of consistency with other articles. The template seems to be the only one using "China (mainland)" out of all the COVID-19 articles. I'm personally against using "Mainland China" or "China (mainland)" (it makes no difference really), but I think we should at least be consistent. Either use "China (mainland)" on all articles, or revert back to "Mainland China". Hayman30 (talk) 08:35, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

If others are changing it on the different pages it should be reverted to China (mainland). The discussion in the mediated intervention was to use this not just on the template but across the related pages. The information is archived on page history [[1]]. There is no sense having this conversation for the tenth time in my opinion. Personally I would prefer to revert to China but that is just me. FYI, in the recent WHO releases, there is not a single mention of a mainland China.

Crying "BLP!". Citing information about the disappearance of Don Lewis by the Tampa Bay Times

, the paper of record for the area, is a very different matter. Including sensational material about sex addiction, menstration, etc, do you see how this could potential insert bias into the article? "Just the facts ma'am" is an important line of distinction. So my question here is this, do you see that you could be tilting a article towards a singular view on the disappearance of a person which quite frankly has become one of the most prominent cold cases over the last couple of weeks. Adding information from the Sheriff's office on a lie detector test is neither rumour nor sensationalism. It is a direct statement of facts from a paper of record and neither accuses Baskin of anything, aside from stating that she did not take a lie detector test.

Again inserting material such as accusations of sex addiction, avoiding someone because of ovulation, etc, is fine as long is it has enough qualified sources and as long as these are not presenting a singular view in a highly disputed case.

Quinn and "singular they"

Hey – just making sure you're understanding the "singular they" usage correctly. It just means that the pronoun they is referring to one single person; it doesn't mean that you would ever conjugate any verb in its singular form combined with a they pronoun (e.g., always "they are..." even when the they refers to a single person, never "they is...").
