The argument has been made in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of countries by number of Fields Medalists (2nd nomination) that, with regards to an academic career award in mathematics, that the ascription of nationality is unclear and so often the ascriptions here involve original research.

Sometimes these kinds of list can appeal to third-party sources for their ranking; e.g. List of countries by Nobel laureates per capita uses a ranking put together by the BBC. Even in these cases, given there are non-obvious criteria and special case reasoning needed to produce these list, these should count as primary sources, so reliance on a single such source for a ranking is problematic.

I think there's also a general question about the reliability of lists of people by nationality. Kurt Gödel is on List of Austrians and List of Czechs: cases can be made for inclusion or exclusion from either list and the lead of the article by an old consensus does not give his nationality.

At Talk:List_of_active_coal-fired_power_stations_in_Turkey#Keeping_this_list_in_step_with_other_articles_and_lists I propose that if a list exists in a non-English Wikipedia the corresponding English list should be allowed to use Wikidata for its tables.

The discussion is about a proposed split and it is neutrally worded. There are tags in the subsection on the list subsections which explain why a discussion is needed. Is #25 on this list really considered a cash giveaway or prize? Someone marked it as such today and while I don't believe it's a major change, I don't think it's correct either. Is there a reason for the two naming systems for list articles (and categories) about alumni/faculty/people of universities? Generally the naming format is either

1. "___ of the [university name]", or
2. "[university name] ___",

but we have large numbers of articles for either ordering even across countries. For example:

• List of alumni of the University of St Andrews
  • Category:Alumni of the University of St Andrews
• List of alumni of the Accra Academy
  • Category:Alumni of the Accra Academy
• List of BITS Pilani alumni
  • Category:Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani alumni
• List of University of Chicago alumni
  • Category:University of Chicago alumni
• List of University of Toronto alumni
  • Category:University of Toronto alumni
• List of University of Sydney people
  • Category:University of Sydney people
    • Category:University of Sydney alumni

At least for categories, pattern #1 seems to be relatively consistently used for the UK and pattern #2 seems to be relatively consistently used for the US.

Sometimes the list and categories do not even follow the same format:

• List of University of Cambridge people
  • Category:Academics of the University of Cambridge
  • Category:Alumni of the University of Cambridge
• List of Ananda College alumni
  • Category:Alumni of Ananda College
• List of alumni of The Citadel
  • Category:The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina alumni
• List of alumni of Clemson University
  • Category:Clemson University alumni
• List of alumni of Cooper Union
  • Category:Cooper Union alumni

I don't think that there's any harm being caused. It's just a little odd when list articles use the different naming systems somewhat randomly, especially when they don't match the category names. This isn't really an issue though, just a minor inquiry into naming consistency. — MarkH₂₁^talk 06:32, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

Pattern #1 seems more natural to me. I'm British, and I think (although I could be mistaken) that Skdb is American. As implied by the pattern of issue noted, this is probably a British English vs American English difference. I don't think it is causing any harm so the natural differences between the varieties of English should be allowed to remain. Robminchin (talk) 06:37, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

I'd also note that "People of the University of Cambridge" certainly seems unnatural, so "University of Cambridge people" but "Academics of the University of Cambridge" is the natural way to order these two. What about "Alumni of [university name]", "Academics of [university name]" but "People related to [university name]" e.g. a specialist of the history of [university name], but nor alumni nor academics of the institution. --Anneyh (talk) 11:26, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

That works for me.

Thinking about this overnight, possibly the root issue is that "University of Cambridge" is the name of the university, but when used adjectivally it becomes "Cambridge University", thus Cambridge University Press, Cambridge University Boat Club. This pattern is found for almost all British universities that use "University of <town name>" for their name, so the adjectival pattern "<university name> academics" doesn't work for these universities: "Cambridge University academics" (using the adjectival form) would sound far better than "University of Cambridge academics". • I see no problem in using one pattern for some countries (including US) and another for some other countries (including UK). There is also a split between Category:University of Chicago people etc and Category:People associated with the University of Nottingham etc, which as far as I can see at a quick dip seems to be another consistent US/UK difference. I'm quite happy to let it be. This has certainly been discussed previously, must be lurking in some talk archives. PamD 16:11, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

As it happens, in parallel I've been trying to bring attention to this issue of weird categorization of university staff, the latest iteration of which is at Category talk:Faculty by university or college#Request for comment on naming. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 19:35, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

The big benefit of putting the University first is that, if you use HotCat or search, as you type it you'll see what articles there are starting with that university and can select the one you want. If you use a different setup, you have to get that setup right as you type it (Alumni of, People related to, People of, Faculty of, Academics of...). If you type the wrong one, you'll wind up scrolling through the various articles/categories that do use that formulation before realizing "oh, I guess the one I'm looking for is different". I don't really do categories on Wikipedia, but on Commons I tend to just create category redirects that put the main proper noun first to try to make it easier. — Rhododendrites ^talk \\ 20:05, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

Guideline for lists of people

Is there a limit to what can be included in a person's entry in a list of people, for example can we add birth year, death year, profession, birth place, nationality, nick names, etc.?
