Atal Bhujal Yojana (or, Atal Jal, lit Atal Groundwater Scheme or Atal Water) is a groundwater management scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 95th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, on 25 December 2019. The purpose of the scheme is to improve groundwater management in seven states of India.[1]
History
In June 2018, the World Bank Board approved the scheme and it will be funded by the World Bank.[2] It was launched on 25 December 2019 under the Jal Jeevan Mission.[3]
Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh are the designated priority states for improvement of groundwater management through community participation, impacting around 78 districts and 8350 gram panchayats. The duration of the scheme is from 2020 to 2025.[1][4]
Benefits and Features
- The Central Government has launched the Atal Ground Water Scheme.
- In seven selected water-stressed areas of the country, this program will value community engagement and demand intervention for sustainable groundwater management.
- The program aims to improve Jal Jeevan Mission's source sustainability, make a beneficial impact on the goal of doubling farmers' income, and change community behavior to encourage water usage.
- The government would invest Rs 6000 crore to run the Atal Ground Water Scheme.
- The World Bank will lend Rs 3000 crore, and the Indian government will put up another Rs 3000 crore.
- Under this plan, the state will receive funds in the form of grants-in-aid.
- 8353 water-stressed Gram Panchayats in Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana will be included in the Atal Ground Water Scheme.[5]
