Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk (Ukrainian: Дмитро Михайлович Сухолиткий-Собчук; born March 23, 1983) is a Ukrainian author, film director and writer.

Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk's feature-length debut film was Pamfir (2022), which had its world premiere at the Cannes film festival.[1] The film was nominated for the Discovery of the Year Prize of the EFA[2] and received over 30 awards, screening at more than 70 film festivals. His short films were selected for such prestigious film festivals as Sundance Film Festival, DOC NYC, IDFA, Toronto International Film Festival, Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films and others.

He is a member of the Ukrainian (from 2017) and European (from 2018) film academies,[3] founder and organiser of the Terrarium script development platform.[4]

Early life

He was born on March 23, 1983, in

Ivano-Frankivsk region.[5][6] Graduated from the Chernivtsi Polytechnical college with a degree in architecture. Received a bachelor's degree at the philosophy and theological faculty of the National University of Chernivtsi.[5] Studied in a journalism school and later worked as a cameraman and editor for several local and national TV channels, as well as a poster artist for a cinema in Chernivtsi.[5][7][8]

In 2013, he graduated from the

Mykhailo Illienko workshop). Participated in a number of national and international film festivals with his student short films. Won a screenplay competition in 2011, was a participant of the Berlinale Talent Campus (2013), received a Gaude Polonia scholarship (2015, 2017).[7]

Career

Student works

Over the years of his studies, Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk directed seven fiction short films, among them:

  • Adolescence (Ukrainian: «Отроцтво») was his first year's work that already went to film festivals and received several awards;[9]
  •  Roots. DREAMS. (Ukrainian: «Коріння. СНИ.») is the only work in his filmography based on a literary work – short story Wild by Hryhir Tyutyunnyk;.[7]
  •  The Beard (Ukrainian: «Борода») – bachelor's graduation film, that became part of the omnibus Ukraine, Goodbye! alongside Nuclear Waste by Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi, Hamburg by Volodymyr Tykhyi and others;[5][10]
  •  Krasna Malanka (Ukrainian: «Красна Маланка») – a medium-length documentary about ethnic Romanians in the village of Krasna celebrating the Malanka carnival. The director's work on this project later influenced him in developing the feature-length debut Pamfir.[11][12]

Weightlifter

The film Weightlifter received the Grand Prix of the Warsaw International Film Festival and the Oscar qualification in 2020, while the Drama International Short Film Festival (Greek: Φεστιβάλ Ελληνικών Ταινιών Μικρού Μήκους Δράμας) in Drama (Greece) selected it as a nominee for the best short film award of the European Film Academy.[4][13]

Pamfir

Pamfir was Dmytro Sukholuytkyy-Sobchuk's feature-length fiction debut which premiered at the Cannes film festival in May 2022, in the Directors' Fortnight section.[14][15]

Liturgy of Anti-Tank Obstacles

Following his feature debut, the director made a short documentary about Ukrainians who temporarily changed their profession to be useful in Ukraine's war against Russia. The film was funded by The New Yorker.[16][17] The film is perceived by the director as the narrative which we shape as a record of crimes and damage inflicted on us by the aggressor.[6][18]

The film saw its world premiere on August 13, 2022, at the Sarajevo Film Festival – the film opened the documentary program of the festival.[16][17] Further it was selecrted for over 70 international film festivals, such as IDFA, Toronto International Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, DOC NYC, New York's documentary festival, Clermont-Ferrand ISFF.[19]

Civic position

In 2018, he supported the appeal of the European Film Academy in defence of Ukrainian filmmaker Oleh Sentsov, who was imprisoned in Russia.

He made a number of statements to draw attention to the fate of Maksym Butkevych, an activist, soldier, and eventually a prisoner in the so-called LPR. In particular, the flag with his portrait on it accompanied the director during the European Film Awards ceremony.
