It's not about an "alphabet letter" (Sumerian was not written with an alphabet), it's about a Sumerian word and the cuneiform sign which was used to write it. It might be a little confusing that as a separate word (as opposed to in names of specific temples), the compound É-GAL "palace, temple" is of more general interest than É alone... Yes, you're right! I was talking about an alphabet just to let me understand. Bad idea! :) Maybe you can smooth the switch to the paragraph about É-GAL, explaining that is a kind of sample use.
