The French article calls him a French geologist. It is confusing that Britannica calls him Swiss, perhaps because his parents were Swiss, and just visiting France when he was born? QuiteUnusual There are sources calling him Swiss-American and sources calling him French-American. He's probably born French cause his birthplace is in present day France(very close to Switzerland border). He is defo American cause he died there and perhaps may have acquired the American citizenship. As for why he is Swiss-American, idk. It may be due to his Parents/lineage. I tried hunting for citations but to no avail. I did find a Source from Cambrigde that he is a French scientis who acquired interest for his field in science while at Switzerland. Thanks, my involvement was reverting a poorly explained change as the ES simply complained that it was "confusing" and removed the citation. However, I might take a look in more detail following your prompt - thanks.
I added another, more recent source from the Dictionary of Scientific Biography. His French background seems clear, he was born in France, grew up there and studied in Paris. He also seems to have settled in America, married an American woman, and called Cambridge Massachusetts his home. His Swiss credentials are less clear; he left America to spend 4-5 years as a professor in Zurich, then returned to America. Seems to me that describing him as French-American would be appropriate.
