Placing Land Rehabilitation in the right section

One of the things about this subject is that many of the technical terms are used to convey the same meaning, when really there are delicate differences. One other thing is that within this subject area, themes can be either separate in thier own right, or some poeple believe them to be within another field (such as Land Reclamation or Land restoration). I think a simple explination in the first paragraph (which should convey the overall meaning, or argument in the field) as to how common terms from the same subject field differ (with links to relivent pages) would help. I.E. reclamation, restoration etc. Kipple2020 15:56, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mine rehabilitation

It might be a difference in lexicon between Australian and US usage, but rehabilitation or restoration or reclamation of land disturbed by mining is termed "mine rehabilitation" whereas land reclamation is used for salinity, etc. Again, a subtle difference, but considering the state of the article on reclamation is to do entirely with waste water treatment....some kind of clean up and sorting effort is needed.Rolinator 07:38, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Terms

Is there any kind of difference between terms like

In my experience, working in the field in both Austalia and Canada, "Mine Rehabilation" and "Mine Reclamation" are one and the same, with rehabiliation being used in Australia and reclamation in North America. "Restoration" is frequently used when a site is returned to its original state, where as reclamation/rehabilation returns a site to a usually functional state which might be different than existed originally. "Remediation" is frequently used when contaminants are removed from soils.

To confuse things further, the Bureau of Reclamation in the US is all about water.

It is in my opinion that the "Land Rehabiliation" and "Mine Reclamation" sites should be combined. Cymm (talk) 18:29, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Merge

The intention and context of land rehabilitation and land restoration is identical. -- Kku 12:15, 7 March 2016 (UTC)

There can be a difference, though it is not well captured by these articles. See ex. http://www.globalrestorationnetwork.org/uploads/files/LiteratureAttachments/246_restoration-and-rehabilitation-of-degraded-ecosystems-in-arid-and-semi-arid-lands-i.pdf

The goal of "restoration" is to return land to something like its original state, whereas the goal of "rehabilitation" is to address problems with land, whether that involves returning land to its original state or to a state where it can be used in another way. With mine rehabilitation, for example, the goal always involves returning the site to a safe and stable condition, but may be turned into pasture land or commercial forestry instead of returned it to its natural condition. I think in the US "land reclamation" would be the more common term for non-restorative "rehabilitation" (we call it "mine reclamation"), but unfortunately "land reclamation" is, outside of the US, the term used for landfills, and so that is the topic of the land reclamation article.

At least the first few paragraphs of land restoration seem focused on ecological restoration. Since that's focused on ecosystems, I don't see a big reason for having a "land restoration" article in addition to the different ecosystems that occur on land, like

environmental restoration
article. This cluster of articles is really a mess.

I would propose 1) keeping "land rehabilitation," as an article covering interventions against land degradation, like

environmental restoration with that. Warm Worm (talk) 23:12, 8 May 2016 (UTC)[reply
