History

I noticed an inaccuracy in the 'History' section today. It states that "On Friday, 24 August 2012, Islamists loyal to Muhammad al-Madkhali, one of the movement's figureheads and Rabee al-Madkhali's brother..."

While the quote is sourced from a seemingly good book, this particular speech is not correct. Muhammad bin Haadi al Madkhali is not the brother of Rabi ibn Haadi al Madkhali or closely related to him at all. Some people err in this regard because Rabi has a son named Muhammad who is also a scholar in his own right.

What is the Wiki policy on something like this? Amerrycan Muslim (talk) 11:46, 23 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The reliable source says that they are brothers, and the claim is reasonable as they both have a father named Hadi. While disputation over an unreliable source is simple, I can't seem to find anything specifically pertaining to disputation about a reliable source. The closest thing I can find it
WP:BIASED which deals with sources which are reliable but biased (as reliability is different from neutrality). I'm not exactly sure if that's what matters in this specific case, though. Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard might be a good place to start, as it if isn't the right place they can certainly direct editors to a better one. Interesting. Yes, I agree the claim is reasonable. I made the same mistake a long time ago. While researching for a university project into Salafism I discovered that they are not even from the same tribe. The Madkhalis are basically a war-time tribal pact creation of varying tribes from the southeast of KSA. I guess it'll have to be chalked up to a weakness in the wiki system until someone corrects it in academia. Amerrycan Muslim (talk) 20:43, 25 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
What you say is reasonable too though, which why it did give me pause - a number of Arabian tribes are the result of allegience rather than blood. I wouldn't necessarily call this a weakness in the Wiki system, though (I'm on my Wiki soapbox, this doesn't pertain directly to the article so you can stop here if you want to).
The Wikipedia system isn't perfect, but it works when everybody adheres to it. I will give you an example I may have given before - if you check out

, you will find a series of pitched battles between myself and some other editors between 2007 and 2013. Basically, I was trying to add information about that group and someone just wanted it removed and for the article to remain short. It took longer than usual because I was new and didn't know the proper routes for mediation and all that, but I never resorted to anything underhanded even while the other party did.
I spend hours - literally, hours - for multiple days across a month just researching that group academically, building the article. I was challenged on every single word, even about which prepositions to use, across multiple talk pages and incident boards. In the end, the community recognized what I was doing and supported more or less every last word and the other party was banned for creating sockpuppet accounts.
The point is, it took a while because sometimes the system's safety/accuracy checks can slow things down and prevent changes which would otherwise be positive, but that's in order to stop a lot of other crap from happening. It can be frustrating, but following the rules all the time ensures the most efficient and balanced system which could realistically be implemented. MezzoMezzo (talk) 03:28, 26 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
