On page 129, De Waal clarifies that Narimanov's "declaration of Karabakh being part of Armenia" was made under pressure and in fact never materialised. Furthermore, the subsequent Dashnak revolt in Armenia annulled all prior agreements.

"In December 1920, the Azerbaijani Communist leader Nariman Narimanov welcome "the victory of the brotherly people" and announced that the three disputed provinces, Karabakh, Nakhichevan, and Zangezur would from now on be part of Soviet Armenia. The declaration was obviously made under duress and was not acted upon. In the spring of 1921, the balance of forces changed, and an anti-Bolshevik uprising in Armenia soured relations between Yerevan and Moscow. All previous agreements were declared void."

In addition, Narimanov expressed his position thus: "On 4 July 1921, the bureau voted to attach Karabakh to Soviet Armenia, but Narimanov objected strongly."

The quote was in no way taken out of context. As my reference noted, it was taken from page 288, which is part of the timeline of events. It was not taken from the text of the book where the additional information you quoted is found. There was no other context to the quote, therefore it could not be taken "out of context". In fact, I find the whole context you quote above quite interesting, and think it should all be added to the article. --RaffiKojian (talk) 18:58, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
