After watching Europa Europa last night I was surprised to see so little written here so I've started the ball rolling. I haven't used too much from the film as I'm sure the director changed a lot from the book for artistic purposes. Jm butler 14:56, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
I have changed Volksdeutscher back to Volksdeutsche. Volksdeutscher maybe correct German for an individual person but it is a loan word and it would be pointless to repeat a whole entry for Volksdeutscher in the English Wikipedia just to explain the differences between these two words. If someone wants to go to the trouble of creating a Volksdeutscher entry then we can change this aricle in the future. Jm butler 18:10, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
I disagree with changing Josef Perjell to Josef Peters. In the book (which Solomon wrote) it is Perjell and only in the film (which has a lot of artistic license in it) is it Peters. Jm butler 15:58, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
- It appears there has been a lot of work put into this article. I was considering it for deletion nomination based on the lack of notability of the subject. What on earth are you talking about, "lack of notability"? Did you see the film of his life? Far more notable than anything you have achieved. Birthdate
If you watch the movie, he says quite clearly that he was born on 20. April, and gleefully declares "the same day as Hitler" (sorry for my paraphrasing). This article however, says it was 21. April. Granted, the movie is in many ways very different from the book, but they took artistic license with his birthdate? Seriously? Tomertalk 00:41, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
No edits for some years, but just in case anyone wants to edit this in the future, be cautious about the movie. It strays VERY significantly from the autobiography and contains a lot of stuff that never occurred. Just one of many examples: the movie depicts Perel being captured by the Russians after a firefight, and then almost being executed by a freed KZ prisoner. Will someone please confirm his real birthday. I watched Europa Europa last night believing it was his birthday but then saw both on the IMDb and Wikipedia that he was in fact born on the 21st. Circumcision
In the 1920s and 30s, neonatal circumcision was hardly unheard of in Europe among non-Jews. In fact it was quite common. My father (born 1933) was circumcised as a neonate and he was a Presbyterian. So Solomon Perel was surely not 'in constant danger of being discovered' when so many non-Jews were circumcised. He may have BELIEVED he was in constant danger, but the reality is that his circumcision would not have put him at any risk of being discovered.
