Cherax cainii is a large freshwater crayfish found in the south-west corner of Australia. The species have been identified as smooth marron [2] [3] and this is being assessed.[4] Cherax cainii occupies a wide range within the southwestern bioregion of Western Australia. It is a commercial species that has been introduced to aquatic systems outside the isolated biogeographical region. It has also been used to restock the Margaret River area, and threatens to displace the endemic 'Hairy Marron' (Cherax tenuimanus).

In Western Australia, recreational fishing for marron is tightly controlled, with a limited season, permits required and minimum sizes. They are often introduced to dams and have been known to creep into houses at night. Marron is considered a luxury product and is the subject of a developing aquaculture industry in Western Australia and in other Australian states. Total Australian production of farmed marron was 30 tons in 1996.

Marron have been introduced to Kangaroo Island in South Australia where they have been commercially farmed but have established feral populations in local waterways. In South Australia it is illegal to return them to the water.  [5]
