Zero Down, Zero Interest at the Oregon COTW

Hello to all the

WikiProject Oregon folks, time once again for yet another bone chilling edition of the Collaboration Of The Week. I thank yee who helped make improvements to Fort Stevens and Upper Klamath Lake. For this first week of December, we have by request Mike Bellotti and his archrival Mike Riley, both in honor of that great tradition we call the Civil War (AKA the battle for the platypus). As always, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. This message is intended for the addressee shown. Very cold, must type about the Oregon COTW to stay warm

Hello again from

WikiProject Oregon’s Collaboration of the Week HQ. Since there was no notice last time, thanks to those who helped improve Mike Riley and Mike Bellotti at the begging of the month and to those who helped create Oregon Department of Justice and Lindsay Applegate last week. Those last two were the red links with lots of links to them from other articles (DOJ was #1). For this week, in honor of Arctic Blast/Winter Storm/Damn its Freakin’ Cold Outside 2008/Storm of the Century/Is there ANYTHING else on going on in the world?/We Might Actually Have a White Christmas, we have Snow Bunny. Then as part of the Stub elimination drive, we have state senator Margaret Carter, which could easily be turned into a nice DYK entry once expanded 5X. As always, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. Have a Holly Jolly Christmas/Hanukah/ Kwanzaa/Winter Solstice. Need your help again. Please, will you take a look at these two articles. I was trying to help improving the pictures which are more black squares than pictures by finding some new better ones, but they were reverted. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Companions_of_Saint_Nicholas&curid=585174&diff=262566359&oldid=262402867 and http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pre-Christian_Alpine_traditions&diff=262566952&oldid=262368398

Greetings from

WikiProject Oregon’s Collaboration of the Week. First off, thank you to everyone who has done work the last few weeks on the last two COTWs. This week we have by request Oregon and California Railroad, part of the lands involved in the Oregon Land Fraud Scandal. Overenthusiastic WP:NOT interpretation on David Shankbone's user and talk page

While Wikipedia isn't a social networking or web homepage site, putting links to real world activities, particularly those that intersect with Wikipedia activities, is normal and tolerated.

Please don't go around removing stuff from David's user page, or anyone elses, on that pretext...

Thank you. Georgewilliamherbert (talk) 09:53, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'd also suggest that before you remove posts from a userpage and its talk that were posted by the user you try discussing the matter first, we do allow a fair degree of descretion for long standing contributors and the post was in relation to user efforts with Wikimedia projects. Gnangarra 09:57, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

with good intent: I'm wary of the risks involved with posting non-Wikipedia blogs/bulletins/links in general on our userpages. Apologies though for being too hasty; I'll raise on talk first in future. ColdmachineTalk 12:58, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply

March 2009 commissioning

As you may not know, the official commissioning of the

Hyūga
on March 18, 2009 was widely reported in the Asian press and elsewhere:

A. RTTNews (link) noted interest in the event:

  • "Anticipating international concern over the launch of the mammoth
fighter planes and that it was different from an aircraft carrier
    ."

B. AvioNews (link) reports that Japan has commissioned the helicopter carrier Hyūga:

  • "The
    Ministry of Defense
underlined that, even if it resembles a light aircraft carrier, the "Hyuga" is an helicopter carrier and respects the pacifist constitution imposed to Japan by the United States after World War II. The Country renounced to use force in international disputes, but anyway it has one of the best organized armies in the world."

C. The

MSDF
) "stressed that the destroyer complies with the country's post-war pacifist constitution."

  • The Straits Times news story included a AFP photo.
  • Xinhua photo

D. iStockAnalyst.com (link) posted a Kyodo News report mentioning "concerns about its resemblance to a light aircraft carrier":

  • "Despite the Hyuga's look and feel of a light aircraft carrier, the MSDF says it is anything but."
  • "'An aircraft carrier, I believe, has a fair degree of offensive functions. Based on that definition, this Hyuga falls a little bit outside of the frame,' MSDF Chief of Staff Adm. Keiji Akahoshi told a news conference on Tuesday."
  • "The acquisition of a destroyer that could project the force far from Japan's coast, however, raises concerns in Asia. It may even spur rivalry with countries like China, which is rumored to build an aircraft carrier of its own."
  • "Japan denies itself offensive capabilities under its war-renouncing Constitution. But the government interprets the supreme law to mean that it can possess the minimum level of armed force necessary for its self-defense."
  • The
Japan Times news story included a Kyodo photo
    .

I wonder if you might be willing to share some thoughts about how to go about incorporating this relevant information into an article --

Hyūga class helicopter destroyer
-- which was the subject of controversy some months ago?

A constructive step might be to re-post what I've written here -- perhaps just after this now-timely diff or this diff which were contributed by

User:Tenmei

User:Tenmei has filed an ArbCom case against me and I have done a little research on Tenmei and noted you have interacted with this user. Can you help provide an opinion about him? Thanks.Teeninvestor (talk) 22:06, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Link:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Tang_Dynasty/Evidence

I was asked to state my opinion and I did. I cannot recommend a single article written (or contributed to significantly) by Tenmei as being anywhere near accurate or readable. Prompted by Teeninvestor's comment, I just went through some of the articles I've contributed to and found that Tenmei had added introduced fundamental errors (things as crucial as what sect of Buddhism a temple belongs to) into some of those pages. These could have been corrected with 10 seconds of fact-checking. Even clicking on the link to the equivalent Japanese Wikipedia page would have sufficed. Meanwhile those articles swell in size and often become nothing but point-form lists copied verbatim from outdated copyright-expired texts. Bueller 007 (talk) 23:11, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't dispute whether you're right on holding that view; my message to you was about the way you presented it to
WP:NPA - I could have templated (which I normally do). ColdmachineTalk 06:38, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply
]
I gave an opinion about a person, as I was asked to do. As I have a negative opinion of that person, expressing that opinion necessitates what you're calling a "personal attack". Would you prefer that I say "I am unable to comment on that user"? Incidentally, if you're particularly referring to the "the cancer that's killing ..." line, it's a well-known Internet meme; a joke. You'll also note that no part of my comment falls into the "some types of comments are never acceptable" categories on the NPA link you provided. In short, if you're going to be the civility police and intervene in other people's conversations without invitation, you can at least make an effort to acquaint yourself with what you're criticizing and the policy you're supposedly policing. Bueller 007 (talk) 05:56, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
WP:CIV issues so let's just leave it. I gave you some polite advice, you responded with this retort. It's not worth the energy, good day. ColdmachineTalk 07:11, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply
]
And apparently not worth the energy to tell me that you had even replied. Point in fact: I was asked to comment about a contributor. I did. My point in the comment above was that my statement can't be construed as a personal attack any more than your own statements that he "seems unable to engage with the process of consensus building" and "Tenmei’s inability to engage with his/her fellow editors". Those were precisely the kinds of comments we were asked to provide. We were asked to comment on the contributor, not the comment, which makes your incredibly low bar for what qualifies as a "personal attack". There is no need to reply to this comment, since I will seemingly remain uninformed if you happen to do so. Bueller 007 (talk) 21:08, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
How very odd. I've no idea why you claim to be left in the dark about a reply in a thread on a user talk page: the onus is on you to come check it for replies, not on me to alert you each time one is posted, particularly since you initiated this discussion here in the first place. Calling someone the "cancer that's killing..." is tactless
User:Tenmei you were asked to do so in regards to his editing behaviour. That he has difficulties building consensus falls exactly within that criteria. That "he's the cancer killing Wikipedia" does not. ColdmachineTalk 15:59, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply

Readding my comments on RfA

No one had responded to my statement. I moved it to Workshop 9 minutes after I posted it because I became aware that what I had posted did not fit the criterion for the page on which I posted. What you've quoted on

WP:REVERT is a GUIDELINE, not a rule, and my case does not even satisfy the criterion for that guideline: NO ONE HAD RESPONDED. I was (and am) free to delete it, and I specifically requested that it not be restored. Perhaps as the self-appointed Wikipedia police, you should better acquaint yourself with the "rules", or perhaps read the message at the top of that page: "Create your own section to provide evidence in, and do not edit anyone else's section." I truly appreciate the fact that you re-added this to the page without informing me. In the future, at least have the common courtesy to do so. Bueller 007 (talk) 20:52, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply

Oh how lovely lol, I'd forgotten that one.:) Do you think one of us should create Category:Anthropomorphic vehicles? :) Sticky Parkin 20:31, 15 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh noes lol, my apologies. Honestly, you should come on FaceBook instead. :) Having said that, I've got drawn back into this again due to my tragic knowledge of IPSOS-like subjects. Feel free to help find any sources about
Marjorie Cameron, if many more exist. What are you concentrating on on wiki at the mo? Sticky Parkin 01:18, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply

Re: RFA

Thank you, Coldmachine. The reason I blanked my userpage is because I intend to remove the original research from all the Good Articles listed there. I have certainly learned a lot from this RFA, and it actually encouraged me to keep contributing and get more experience. :) TheLeftorium 23:00, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm alive - and the world shines for me today, I'm alive - suddenly I am here today. Just still taking a wiki-break. So much for it being a semi-break; it's turned into quite a long one in fact. I'll be back... ColdmachineTalk 13:22, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I, oh, I'm still alive, too, so I should really make the most of it rather than being on the wiki lol.:) Sticky Parkin 22:23, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Query

I'm sorry but you sent me a message saying "Please do not add commercial material to Wikipedia, as you did to Liverpool. While objective prose about products or services is acceptable, Wikipedia is not intended to be a vehicle for advertising or promotion. Thank you"

... What on Earth are you talking about?

That would be your edit here where you added two external links to promote external materials. Check #4 and #5 of
WP:SOAP for why your edit was probably reverted. I should add: I'm on wikibreak at the moment; this fact is established via a prominent banner on my user page and talk page, and I'm certain you must have known this to be the case seeing as you posted your query within the 'wikibreak' section above. You should also ensure you sign off your posts using four tildas (~~~~); perhaps registering for an account might be an idea, too. ColdmachineTalk 16:29, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply

Hubristic of you to think you could escape the wiki.:) Could you have a quick look at this one if and/or when you come back? Sticky Parkin 01:11, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there; thanks for the email - I did receive it and read it, but I am unable to assist you as I am only partly active on Wikipedia these days. Best of luck though. ColdmachineTalk 19:49, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is to let you know that an ongoing poll is taking place to move Burma to Myanmar. I know this happened just recently but no administrator would close these frequent rm's down, so here we go again. This note is going out to wikipedia members who have participated in Burma/Myanmar name changing polls in the past. It does not include banned members nor those with only ip addresses. Thank you. sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of User:Coldmachine/Userboxes/NoFraternity during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such a removal will not end the deletion discussion. Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The

Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to!
