First of all, thank you very much for your warm and gracious welcome! I have been a near-daily user of Wikipedia since I discovered it years ago.

I happened upon the page titled "Space elevator" today. I was astounded that there was not a single criticism of the concept. It is fundamentally flawed to the point that it could not happen on Earth but could possibly be used on the Moon or Mars. I am not sure how to address the issue. I am a long time amateur astronomer (over 50 years) and hold an old Bachelor of Science degree. I have no formal training in aerospace and am by no means an expert. My criticisms of the concept are purely from common sense and I have not seen them advocated by anyone else anywhere else. I have commented about the subject a number of times on sites concerned about such matters and have noticed that the ongoing chatter praising the virtues of the concept soon stop dead in their tracks. If ever there were a concept that qualified as "pie in the sky" this is it.

My main perceived flaws in the concept are threefold, but I am sure they are not the only ones. I can state them briefly here but would think a more detailed explanation would be needed and could certainly be provided.

Firstly, I have never seen any detailed analysis of what it would take to anchor such a structure to provide a useful device. The anchoring of the uplifting forces required seem to be ignored in any discussion and for such a thing to be worthwhile constructing it would need to be extremely well anchored since the forces involved are immense, and grow greatly with the size of the payload.

Secondly, most discussions of materials to be used speak of carbon nanotubes or other substances that also happen to be electrical conductors. Basic electrodynamics tells us that a conductor moving through a magnetic field will give rise to a current. A very long conductor (over 50,000 km in length) moving through the Earth's magnetic field would create a HUGE current that would have to be handled or dissipated in some manner. Perhaps it could be used to power the lifting but it would still be a major problem if ever the scheme was not in use.

Lastly, and most damning of all, is that it is not a question that something in orbit may hit the tether. It is a matter of fact that EVERYTHING in orbit will hit it eventually, with the exception of geostationary satellites. I doubt that mankind would want to abandon low, medium and high Earth orbits except for geosynchronous ones in exchange for this technology.

It surprises me that these points are not obvious to all except the few charlatans that see a career and endless grant money exploring the concept when it is a non-starter from the outset. The case of using a variation of the concept that dangles a tether from the lunar surface through the L1 LaGrange point between the moon and the Earth would not face quite the challenges as a space elevator based on the Earth's surface. The anchoring problem would still be significant but the electrical problem would not and the few satellites in orbit around the moon at any given time would most likely be able to accommodate such an obstacle.

As I have said, I have no sources to quote and cannot claim to be an expert in the field. I would appreciate any insight or advice as to how to proceed. The billions of dollars proposed to pursue the Earth-based space elevator should not be wasted when there are other more worthy uses for the resources that would be squandered. The Wikipedia entry as it stands makes it seem that it is just a matter of time before this technology is deployed.

On rereading the article I seemed to have missed the section "Safety issues and construction challenges" which glosses over two of these concerns. The idea of anchoring the tether to solid ground is a large enough problem. The idea of using a floating movable anchor point to avoid collisions is comical. I cannot get the mental image of a large barge dangling in the sky at the end of the tether out of my mind on the first overload or the first foray close to the counterweight. Perhaps my concerns are moot and I should leave the whole thing in the hands of professionals to pad their pockets spending their lifetimes chasing the dream.

Sorry for bothering you. I created a map of the control situation of the west bank according to the oslo agreements. Basically, what I did is I took colored annexed East Jerusalem, areas A, B and C in a simple way easy to understand to the average reader of West Bank, State of Palestine (both of which have been banned from editing by average users such as myself since they are fragile subjects). I think it would make a good addition to both articles, and I get if it cannot be included. But If it somehow can be included, but needs improvement, I'm ready to modify it, and give my contribution to make people understand the conflict with ease. I already uploaded the file on Wikimedia Commons and can be found here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Control_status_of_the_West_Bank_as_per_the_Oslo_Accords.svg The format is standard .svg. I made it because maps of the West Bank explaining the Oslo Agreements were too confusing and required a high level of concentration to interact with properly. Hello Dragon Booster!

Thanks for the welcome. I am already discouraged because some of my favorite subjects are the Middle East, Arab-Israel Conflict, Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, Israel. By the looks of it, they are very tightly controlled, contentious and the dominating views of the senior editors seem to conflict with mine. I have seen their comments in the talk pages and know my edits will never make it into the page.

I did post a suggestion for Wiki. I think more people would be served better if there was a way to add facts that conflict with the views of the "controlling" editors. It could be as simple as a button to view facts (not vandalism) that are censored but are part of the literature, reasonable and documented. I have seen comments, "most historians..." when facts are rejected but the "most historians" thing is very subjective.

As my interests are only involving highly controversial subjects, I may just be wasting my time.

I just created an account, so I am not a certified user. On Gavin Free's Wiki page, the second paragraph states that Gavin is "also known as the co-creator and co-host of the YouTube-based web series The Slow Mo Guys". Gavin is the creator of The Slow Mo Guys, not co-creator. Him being a co-host is correct.

Can you change that sentence to "Free is also known as the creator and co-host of the YouTube-based web series "The Slow Mo Guys"?

Thank you, Dragon Booster, for reaching out to me and your supportive comments. I do indeed take my edits quite seriously and have a question about the very thing you commented on to me. On the talk page of "Emily L. Spratt" I offered a citation, as I had noticed that this notable person who researches on AI's relationship to art and society was surprisingly being suggested as a delete page. Today I checked to see if my citation had been included but found the page is now gone. The original author of that page had provided reasons why that page should not be deleted and that is why I also suggested another source. This name is definitely known in that art AI space. Isn't the wiki policy to not delete if there are editors suggesting it should not be that have verified citations to back up their positions? Can you check this issue out? Regarding the one-line obituary notice for Neil Simon, which I edited yesterday, it is far more culturally significant that he won a Pulitzer Prize than that he wrote the screenplay for Goodbye Girl. I had added the Pulitzer (which is also more prestigious than a Tony Award) and removed the screenplay, which is culturally and historically insignificant. Someone else added the screenplay back, but then you deleted the Pulitzer in the name of "accolade overload." Not to get into an edit war, but Pulitzers are pretty important. I share with you the desire to shorted the one line, but remove what is insignificant, not the most prestigious. In this case, if you know anything about Neil Simon, the Pulitzer is especially significant because 1) it's not as well-known that he won this, and 2) he was considered a commercial playwright for most of his career, and the fact that he won a Pulitzer was significant in a reassessment of him as a serious dramatist. Thanks for the welcome.

I love reading so I spend about ten or more hours a day usually doing that.

Sometimes that entire ten hours is spent on Wikipedia.

I have found it invaluable and have been an advocate of the open source encyclopedia ever since it's inception.

I probably have spent days arguing with people face to face (yes in the "real" world) about how Wikipedia is superior to practically every encyclopedia with very few exceptions (of which I can think of absolutely none at this time). Well maybe the Near Earth Object Database is equally amazing. I love astronomy and Wikipedia is incredibly useful for that as well. But nothing in print can ever hope to compete with Wikipedia.

So occasionally while I'm reading I'll edit some stuff mostly adding links or catching a typo, or making something a little clearer...

I've done it mostly anonymously over the last few years but recently decided to create an account so I can keep track of things better.

I doubt I'll ever match your level of prodigious contributions, But I've enjoyed perusing your page and learning a bit as I go.

The above user is misrepresenting the situation. The producers were promoting the 50 crore value, which some outlets ran with. These outlets even cited the producers as the source. The fact that he's found some sources that don't mention the origin of the information doesn't mean that the data is any more valid. That is the nature of the dispute, not so much a "fan fight issue". Mollywood.lover has been on a months-long campaign to add and re-add this content to the article. No doubt as a self-proclaimed "Mollywood.lover", he's got some kind of emotional attachment to Mammootty crossing that arbitrary 50 crore milestone. Unless that's what he means by "fan fight issue". I eventually bailed out of these conversations because they're fruitless and time consuming. Maybe people with fresher eyes can figure out whether or not the 50 crore value has been authenticated, but this guy contacting you just looks like he's trying to get someone else to do his dirty work/join his army. It's almost literally the
