Thanks for the heads-up. I appreciate it. Without it, I would have been unaware that anything was happening. After reading through the discussion, I opposed promotion, which is something I rarely do, and gave my reasons. I have a continuing interest in Petrified Forest National Park as well as the image and would not like to see the cropped version replace the lead image there. Johannes Rach

Hi Elekhh, thanks for the tip on commons about how best to upload images from Flicker, much easier. While I am at it (troubling you, that is), I have a question you might be able to ask in your capacity of Indonesia buff. I have had an article on Johannes Rach stuck in a sandbox for ages after stumbling over this article but I found it surprisingly hard to find illustrations from his Indonesian period and therefore lost interest (well partly because it just ended up su terribly clumpsy language-wise and seemed to get nowhere). Oh not at all, just use my talk page as a forum whenever you want: is free as long is on cultual topics ;). Indeed some images are really close like this was on commons just misspelled. Than there is a good clue in the text where the images are, so I found 20 more at the Rijksmuseum, and 164 lowres at the Perpustakaan. This appears to be the book you need. Architecture help

Hi, Elekhh, I noticed that you are a member of

WikiProject Architecture that is fairly active. I'm working on Gateway Arch (which I plan to take to GAN), and am having some trouble with the architecture component of it, especially the "Construction" section. I found a New York Times article

that I thought explained it quite clearly. Could you summarize the following sentences for me (as little jargon as possible) and integrate it into the article? Thanks.

...the arch was built of 12-foot prefabricated stainless steel sections, manufactured at Warren, Pa., by the Pittsburgh and Des Moines Steel Company. Each section, after being hoisted and welded into place, had its double-walled skin filled with concrete, which was then stressed by 252 tension bars in each leg. The slim steel rods, reaching into the foundation, were stretched taut by hydraulic jacks until the concrete had set. To put the final prefabricated section in place next week, hydraulic jacks will pry the two-foot opening at the top to eight feet. The hydraulic jacks, a steel scaffolding "scissors jack" and the cranes will then be removed. ("St. Louis's Arch Is Near Its 'Topping Out' Stage")

Art of Luxembourg

I've just put together another top-down article, this time on the Art of Luxembourg, and would appreciate any suggestions you may have for improvements. One of the major problems, as with most articles covering contemporary or recent figures, is the difficulty of including images of the works involved. Would it be a good idea to include a list of external links or do you think it is sufficient that there are links in the text to the WP biographies of the individuals involved? How strict is the 70-year rule on copyright? Is the year sufficient or do you think it is necessary to wait for the actual date of death (e.g. Sosthène Weis who died on 28 July 1941)? - Ipigott (talk) 16:04, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Kutter image for deletion

I am a bit surprised to see that File:Kutter Luxembourg 1937.jpg is being considered for deletion. The comment is that there was not sufficient discussion of the painting in question. I have added something to the Joseph Kutter article and will also try to adapt the other articles (although there are links to Kutter from each of them). Thanks for you convincing comments on this. Together with Hoary's support, I think the image has now been saved. You may be interested to know I also added File:Su-Mei Tse Balayers du désert.jpg using similar justifications. Fortunately, up to now no one has objected to this. Elekh, what are you talking about? The tower was achieved in 1439, not in the 17th century ([1]). You very kindly commented on this last year. I've done some further work on it, bearing your comments in mind. In particular I have sought to reference it more fully and have tried to tone down the personal comments, although, as a Burges fanatic, it's bloody hard. I'm now thinking I'd like to have it peer reviewed, as you suggested. I'd really appreciate any further thoughts you have on its weaknesses before I do so. I would love to improve its rating, partly, I must admit, through vanity, but really because if any architect deserves a GA rating, then Burges does. There's me being POV again.

Hi Elekhh. I'm an online mentor too and happened to notice your introduction there. My ears perked up when I read of your dual interests in illustrations and renewable energy. If you might have time to make some good illustrations, I know of one particular renewable energy article that is in need of some good graphics to illustrate various forms in which this particular renewable energy technology is taking in early design prototype efforts. Thanks for the kind response. I was thinking of some potential graphics that would help illustrate the distinctive differences between the (rapidly becoming ubiqitous in Europe) shallow-bottom, fixed-foundation (generally, a

monopile foundation) offshore wind technology and the deep-water, floating wind technologies (which are much newer and much less well understood by the lay Wikipedia reader). As a secondary idea, graphics to illustrate differences between the basic design of various floating structures (spar buoy type like Hywind, or platforms and more complex water structures in the various proposed concepts would be useful. There might be more ideas, but those are mine for now. I am a graphical/illustration illiterate. On the map idea, I think a map will begin to be more interesting in a couple of years after there are more deployments of this technology; right now just one is operating, and it is off the coast of Norway. Thanks for taking a look at this. I think that the sort of comparitive graphic you suggested is exactly what would work really well for that article. Like you, I'm a bit too busy to pursue it right now, and illustrations aren't my thing anyway, but I do hope that floating wind turbines get some better illustrations over time, in the great emergent phenomenon that is Wikipedia. Howdy, Online Ambassador!

This is a quick message to all the ambassadors about marking and tracking which articles students are working on. For the classes working with the ambassador program, please look over any articles being worked on by students (in particular, any ones you are mentoring, but others who don't have mentors as well) and do these things:

1. Add {{WAP assignment | term = Spring 2011 }} to the articles' talk pages. (The other parameters of the {{WAP assignment}} template are helpful, so please add them as well, but the term = Spring 2011 one is most important.)
2. If the article is related to United States public policy, make sure the article the WikiProject banner is on the talk page: {{WikiProject United States Public Policy}}
3. Add Category:Article Feedback Pilot (a hidden category) to the article itself. The second phase of the Article Feedback Tool project has started, and this time we're trying to include all of the articles students are working on. Please test out the Article Feedback Tool, as well. The new version just deployed, so any bug reports or feedback will be appreciated by the tech team working on it.

And of course, don't forget to check in on the students, give them constructive feedback, praise them for positive contributions, award them {{The WikiPen}} if they are doing excellent work, and so on. And if you haven't done so, make sure any students you are mentoring are listed on your mentor profile.

Hi Elekhh,

That's a bit of a worry that I was the last good faith editor of Tim Flannery. Actually, having a look at the page history since, I think it is well due for protection. Flannery has just embarked on a nationwide tour to explain climate change and carbon pricing (as part of the thing I added), so I reckon chances are pretty good this article is going to be attracting a lot of trolling.

Re the piece you mention, I haven't followed the link, but I find it believable that Flannery may have said it. However I believe it's being taken out of context in its current usage – i.e., he would have been highlighting the need for urgent action, which is not really how it reads in the article (it's been put as though he's saying we're wasting our time acting, which is the type of thing Bolt and Price, both well known and influential local

Eh, those feedback/comment sections on websites seem to be honeypots for nutters; the comments there were relatively reserved compared to what you usually see. Kinda proves the point of why newspapers letters sections are filtered through the editor first; when you see some of what does get published, especially in papers like the Herald-Sun and Daily Telegraph, you've gotta wonder what sort of stuff they get that they don't publish! --jjron (talk) 10:57, 7 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Elekhh, I've been doing some work on Corbusier's Villa Savoye. I was a little surprised to see a photo on the page because I thought that France had no Freedom of Panorama? I have made a short article about Hotel Astoria in Copenhagen and thought it might be relevant for a DYK but maybe it is too short. I thought about something like "Did you know that the design of Hotel Astoria in Copenhagen was intended to ressemble a locomotive and has inspired Peter Clash's Sleeperz Hotel in Cardiff, Wales. And another thing, I knowthere is a technical term for that kind of architecture which is designed to ressemble its content (cf. also the Darwin Centre phase II at the Natural History Museum which is inspired by a cocoon, the natural historic ornaments on the Museum's old building, or the new national library in Paris which looks like books) but I can't seem to remember the name. I am even quite sure it has got a wikipedia article, so do you, Mr. Architectureman who seems to be everywhere just remotely related to architecture, happen to know what I am thinking of? I am glad that my sustained attempts to improve a tiny bit Wikipedia's coverage of architecture is felt :); The article is long enough for DYK and am happy to nominate for you. However I am not fully happy yet with the hook, as it teases the reader regarding the resemblance to that other hotel in Wales but than there is no article on the Sleeperz Hotel or its architect nor an image to demonstrate the connection. So I would prefer either a shorter hook "...that the design of Hotel Astoria in Copenhagen was intended to resemble a locomotive?" or one with more about its design "..that the design of Hotel Astoria in Copenhagen is an early example of functionalism and was intended to resemble a locomotive?" if you can add an inline citation to the functionalism part. I was in doubt myself wheather it would work with the Cardiff reference with neither an article on the architect or the building. I'll be happy with either one of your proposals. I have very little experience with DYK, I hardly ever read them myself and the few that have come from my previous articles have been nominated by others without my knowing. Yes, I got it that you are not a fan of DYK and sincerely neither am I reading random facts on any page (and never read DYK and even supported replacing them on the main page with a selected GA article), but apparently many people do, and that little effort of nominating will bring few thousand extra people to your article(s).
