Wikiproject Video games Newsletter survey

Hello Roberth! I'm conducting a feature for the video games newsletter similar to that of a survey. I'm going to ask users their opinions on a specific matter and highlight unique and common answers to determine consensus on a subject. Your input would be very valuable, alongside others, to help answer this question.

The question is: How do you determine what makes a video game character notable enough for their own page? Do you follow pre-existing guidelines or have your own opinions on the matter?

Lists of cancelled games

Hi, I'm concerned that your continued attempts, sandboxing, and creations of lists of cancelled games (really, any lists of games), is getting to the point of disruption.

It would probably be a good idea to stop creating those. This is a friendly note, but if you continue, you may end up

topic banned from lists of games, and possibly all video games and lists. --Izno (talk

@Izno:*sigh* Oh well, I guess that day would had to come eventually. I'll delete the current list I have on my sandbox, which wasn't even going to be its own article (i was doing the 32X list to later integrate it into the main 32X game list). Roberth Martinez (talk) 04:00, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for creating that page! I'm not that big of a Thunder Force fan but I had created a draft a ways back that I never got around to finishing. It's of significantly better quality than your previous pages, too, which I'm very pleased with. Namcokid47 06:18, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

The Nintendo Barnstar
You are a fellow hard core citation spelunker. For deep diving into ye olden archives for video game citations, I dub thee most excellent. More paper keeps getting digitized so may the dead trees keep bobbing to the surface of the blackened deep, and may machine translation have mercy upon us gaijin. Game Machine charts

Hi KGAMR. Great work with the Game Machine arcade charts! Thanks to your work, I've been taking an interest in arcade game charts lately. However, one issue I've noticed is that you usually wrote something along the lines of "Xth most successful arcade game of the year". However, the charts are not referring to the entire year, but only to individual months (or half-months more specifically). I've corrected a few articles to say "Xth most successful arcade game of the month". However, there are too many articles to correct. It would be great if you could look at articles you've previously edited and make this correction yourself. I'd appreciate it very much. Thanks. Maestro2016 (talk) 16:45, 3 March 2021 (UTC)

I'll get to it one of these days... Roberth Martinez (talk) 17:01, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
The magazine was published every two weeks, and the list is measuring general popularity. The magazine surveyed arcade owners who responded with what are the most "popular" games in their arcades. It's probably most accurate to say "X game was listed as the Xth most popular game in Japanese arcades on a biweekly survey published by Game Machine on DATE"...or something like that... TarkusABtalk/contrib 19:15, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

Monthly charts?

So is it confirmed that these aren't yearly charts at all? There are just too many games that claim to be the 3rd biggest game of the year, etc. It's highly midleading. Should I just remove whenever I see it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.25.189.171 (talk) 22:11, 29 March 2021 (UTC)

92.25.189.171 - You could change the text as TarkusAB suggested. The Game Machine references are used to demonstrate the game's overall popularity in Japan. It's just a screw up I did when I placed those references, since I don't read Japanese very well... Roberth Martinez (talk) 22:19, 29 March 2021 (UTC)
They are biweekly rankings, not annual. They reflect current game "popularity" as collected through arcade owner surveys. I wouldn't say remove it, but reword it to be accurate when you come across it. TarkusABtalk/contrib 04:05, 31 March 2021 (UTC)

Covers

Hello! I wanted to discuss something with you regarding Akai Katana. You have switched the NA cover with a JP arcade cover, which I reverted to how it was, due to my edit comment (we are editing on English Wikipedia). If you wish, you may revert me again, and I won't oppose. Similar thing seems to be happening with Arcana Heart (video game), which has a NA cover for the PS2 version. Your comment about this matter is highly appreciated, as I feel we shouldn't use foreign covers unless it's needed (for Japan-only releases for example).

Also, fantastic work on so many new articles! The depth you are reaching for to catch every source possible covering those particular games...just wow. Kudos, and keep doing your thing! Regards,

Jovanmilic97 (talk

@
Jovanmilic97:I know both titles have their NA cover arts but since both titles were originally arcade titles released in Japan, i felt it was right to upload their respective arcade flyers but that does not mean that I don't like your work. I hope you understad my reasoning. (P.S.: IIRC, there's a line somewhere in Wikipedia that states that the original cover of a game should be used no matter the region where it came from [i.e. the Japanese Akai Katana arcade flyer]) (P.S.S.: i had a brainfart when writing this reply but i forgot to also say the fact that i upload the original cover of an article doesn't mean that I don't like the work of other editors that upload alternative covers) Roberth Martinez (talk

Re:Help with a draft

Hey! Awesome to see that you're still working to expand the Spanish game coverage on WPVG. It's already so much better than it was a couple of years back, but every little bit helps.

Unfortunately, I'm not very active at the moment. Work has eaten up all of my editing time this year. (Looking at my contributions, I see I've only edited twice since February!) I don't plan to stop editing forever, so we'll see when I can make time for it again. That said, I don't expect it will be any time soon. I'll just have to wish you luck with the Carlos Sainz draft—maybe someone else on WPVG would be open to help? JimmyBlackwing (talk) 03:28, 26 April 2021 (UTC)

Can you help me rescue Espgaluda's article?

Hello, I noticed the great work you did bringing back the article on ESP Ra.De.. So I was wondering if you could lend me a hand with Espgaluda which was deleted 5 years ago. I added some new references under reception and refideas on the talk page to help remove some of the cruft in the gameplay section. Let me know if you'd be down. Wikiproject Video games Newsletter survey

I'm conducting another survey for the Wikiproject Video games Newsletter. If you could leave your thoughts on the matter it would be greatly appreciated. Every response will be compiled into a MOS-Esque answer that balances the thoughts of our top contributors. You're one of them! The question is as follows:

What would you consider the requirements of making a video game series article? What about franchise articles?

If you would like to respond, please ping me here and write your reply. I'll handle the rest. You didn't respond to the last question, but it's worth a shot to check one more time. Panini!🥪 14:54, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

@Panini!:What i would consider the requirements of making a video game series article? Hmmm... i would say only one and that would be your knowledge and/or interest you have in a particular series. If you're doing it without any passion or knowledge for that particular series then don't try doing it. For franchise articles, try to throw everything at a wall and see what sticks. I would also apply the same logic i described earlier as well... Roberth Martinez (talk) 16:07, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

The Punisher (1993 video game)

Hi KGRAMR. I refer to your edit here: [1]. Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but I don't understand what you're trying to reference here, as in what assertion your reference backs up. "Upon its release (Reference)" - My initial thought is you're trying to reference that the game exists and was released, though that can't be right as I'm sure you know that's unnecessary. Have you just placed the citation in the wrong place? I was going to revert your edit but then I thought it would be more polite to just ask you about it. :) Damien Linnane (talk) 11:54, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

Speed Power Gunbike

I've expanded the article for Speed Power Gunbike in a similar fashion to Love & Destroy. I started working on this offline a long time ago (as evidence of some of the retrieval dates) but never got around to finishing all sections until now. It could use some polish, but I've done all I want to on it, so feel free to make more improvements if you like. With some TLC I'm sure it would be worthy of C-class or higher. @Haitch2PointOh:Dude! The article for SPG looks great now! I'm promoting it to B class, since this was Inti Creates' first-ever project. Cheers to you mate, for another well-made expansion! Roberth Martinez (talk) 02:46, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
@Haitch2PointOh:I don't know if you're interested but I left sources in regards to the development of the original Metal Slug (1996 video game) so it can be expanded, as I don't think I can make it justice, given how important that first entry was for SNK. Roberth Martinez (talk) 06:19, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
I have a few draft articles (or sections of articles) on my desktop I'd like to implement first, but after that I would be glad to help with development section of Metal Slug when I have more time. Haitch2PointOh (talk) 11:17, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi. Thanks for getting those sources there. I'd already found the one about the apparent PS3 version of Cry On, but I hadn't any idea Mistwalker had jumped developers in 2007. I was able to do some digging, pinpoint a scan of the page, the issue, and put in what information I could get. Hopefully this won't cause my GAN efforts to hiccup. --ProtoDrake (talk) 17:01, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

@ProtoDrake:No problem! Glad i was able to help with Cry On's article in some way or another. Roberth Martinez (talk) 17:07, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
Aaaannnd I discovered another source that clarifies that while the artist changed, the developer didn't. Someone got their translation skrewy, specifically me. Nintendo barnstar

The Nintendo Barnstar
I guess there needs to be another barnstar for this guy because why not, and it may as well be the Nintendo one because nobody ever uses that. You offer so many pure-Japanese citation suggestions which I sometimes comb with the Google optical translation app on my iPhone, to no avail. Do you read Japanese? I just thought I'd let you know that I've tried sometimes, though almost all of those that I randomly looked at are just fluff-mentions in passing, like one comic book panel per game, and not critical reviews so I can't cull anything. I was hoping to at least get something like "this magazine guy said it's some of the best Famicom graphics" but I kinda gave up. If I knew a particular one where that was possible, I would do it. I was just wondering if you'd ever seen reviews of 64DD or Mario no Photopi. I pulled the Photopi article out of the dumpster because it is a Mario spinoff and a multi-industry breakthrough product in Japan, but it's such a total dud of a game, so I figured any real mention would be lost in Japanese dead trees. It was supposed to be a big deal for home photo galleries due to Japan's allergy to pasokon or personal computers. And I have almost no Japan references of 64DD or its nine games, other than in Randnet's own magazine, and a couple of fan websites. Surely its four-year prerelease period was heavily drooled about in Famitsu! Or mentioned in newspapers. And those are some major games across most of a year. With a whole Internet service, the first of its kind.
Hey there. This link is busted. :) Those darn dead trees are hard to pin down. — Smuckola(talk) 22:10, 31 August 2021 (UTC)
I got this one done. I adopted that article because I beat the game in 1999 in the new Sony Metreon after seeing an IMAX movie. Hello. You did great job. I put fonts in the only two passages that didn't have them. I noticed that you removed the page number. Is there anything else in the article that you intend to expand on or add to? Best regards. ✍A.WagnerC (talk) 17:29, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

@A.WagnerC:Nope! I'm pretty much done with the article. There's nothing else i can add to it... Roberth Martinez (talk) 20:34, 8 June 2022 (UTC)
Nice. I will review the article. If I open the order, I will tag you. ✍A.WagnerC (talk) 14:09, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

Autopatrolled granted

Hi KGRAMR, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed' and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned prolific creators of articles where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.

Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Wikipedia's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.

Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! Mifter (talk) 04:05, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

@Mifter: Oh cool! Thanks for the heads up! Roberth Martinez (talk) 22:06, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

Hey there! Someone helped me find out that this one does have sufficient reviews to meet the GNG so I restored it. :) Do you have anything you can add to it? BOZ (talk) 02:45, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

@BOZ:Let me see what i can find... Roberth Martinez (talk) 21:18, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

Re Blue Stinger

Hi. So, Blue Stinger ended up being expanded into something I wasn't planning (who'd have thunk I'd debunk its accepted genre through developer comments and contemporary reviews), and I'm interested enough in the game that I'm not only planning on taking BS to GAN, but I'm making an article on Climax Graphics/Crazy Games (not sure I'd want to tackle Illbleed, but I've left plenty of sources on its talk page). Since you seemed interested in Blue Stinger, I was wondering if you could take a look over the article, pick up anything that I may've missed so a GAN can go smoother. I understand if you can't, but I'd appreciate another pair of eyes. Did my best with reception, always been my weak point. ProtoDrake (talk) 20:48, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

@ProtoDrake: The article now looks a hundred times better than before. Also, thumbs up for digging up that Tips & Tricks reference. I never even knew that Blue Stinger started life as a Sega Saturn project. Yeah, i can take a look at the article to see if there are some minor issues to help you out! Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth

Dear KGRAMR. Do you think in promote that article to GA? I'll see later what's missing in it, but your work is very good. I think about translating later for ptwiki. Best regards. ✍A.WagnerC (talk) 02:47, 22 November 2022 (UTC)

@A.WagnerC: I do not have plans to promote that article, or any article i've lent my hand on, to the GA status. It's fine the way it is. Roberth Martinez (talk) 02:55, 22 November 2022 (UTC)
Alright. Then, I will try to continue your good work. Any opposition if I try promote in the future? ✍A.WagnerC (talk) 10:38, 22 November 2022 (UTC)
@A.WagnerC:Hmmm... Well, you're the one that want to nominate the article so, i don't have any issues with it... Roberth Martinez (talk) 22:08, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

I did a search through print magazine sources and could not find much on the game. A bit puzzling since as a shooting game with little dialogue it would seem to be exactly the kind of game that would get import reviews. Funny enough, I found exactly the kind of sources you'd want, but for other games. Like I found this 4 page French retrospective review for Kaze Kiri. That game has a Retro gamer review, a 4 page French retrospective, and a contemporary review from 1994 in Gamefan. Pretty good spread. Can't find much for Sylphia. There's that preview (but no review) in Consoles+, and a Video Game review in the import game section (which calls the game "Silphia").

If you wish to truly expand the article, you'll have to use Japanese sources. There was several Japanese PC engine magazines, plus there's a lot of modern PC Engine retrospective mooks out there. They're pretty cheap on amazon if you buy the digital versions. Harizotoh9 (talk) 16:13, 16 December 2022 (UTC)

@Harizotoh9:I do know there are sources for the game out there but i don't know japanese unfortunately... Roberth Martinez (talk) 21:13, 16 December 2022 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Virtual Bowling

The article Virtual Bowling you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Virtual Bowling for comments about the article, and Talk:Virtual Bowling/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility.
