Just following up on the Afro-Puerto Rican edit. Essentially, in Puerto Rico one would not say "afro-puertorriqueño" because it when you are on the island, it is assumed that you are boricua (aside from those who may think you are dominican). In Puerto Rico one just says, "soy negro" when a description is given. However, because this is an encyclopedia and we are in the United States, we are describing things, (1) that are not here, and (2)in English. Which is exactly the reason why Afro-Puerto Rican exists in English as an anthropological term. The term was not created as a divide-and-conquer tactic. It is merely a descriptive term used properly in the context of this category. That is to say, I well understand social backgrounds of discrimination and the nuyorican experience, but I don't think it is relevant to the deletion of an accurate, historical term used to describe a group in PR that seldom gets any credit. Es decir, no tiene que existir un termino antropologico, (sumamente correcto) en espanol para que exista en ingles. Asi es con muchas cosas en los idiomas. A google search reveals an amount of "Afro-Puerto Rican" on a scale that is staggering. The current name is very vague and arguably includes a majority of all Puerto Ricans. Project news Following a lengthy discussion, three new coordinators – EyeSerene, Maralia and the_ed17 - have been coopted. The purpose of the appointments is partly to fill the place left by the retirement of TomStar81 and partly to provide increased/improved coordinator capacity to cover existing coordinator absences and to help with upcoming major projects. As a reminder, coordinators are merely editors who have committed to go the extra mile for the project and that there are very few processes that require coordinator input. I think it needs work; I don't know of any other list of people where it's just a list of vignettes separated by horizontal rules. A lot of the space is taken up with their curriculum vitae and resumes; we don't need to know, for example, that "Dr. Solís earned his surgeons degree from the university of Puerto Rico's School of Medicine. He then continued his surgical training at the Shands Hospital of the University of Florida" All we need to know is the basics: Who he is, and why he's on this list. Where he got his degree doesn't matter, unless that in itself was notable. If he had his own article, then that would be fine there, but this article, IMO, needs to be specific on what it includes. IMO, if they aren't notable/sourced enough for their own article, that's not license to include more content here than the ones WITH articles. --Golbez (talk) 05:44, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi there! Long time no see! I'm curious about something. I've been looking at the Senate of Puerto Rico page and the table of the results of the 2008 election. Is the table accurate? It shows the PNP winning all 16 district seats - despite barely outpolling the PPD (by a margin of 47.4% to 47.1%). I know that first-past-the-post elections do produce electoral distortions (my own country used that system before 1996), but I can't quite understand how 47.4% of the vote can translate into 100% of the seats. Is there an explanation?

The NPP obtained a "copo" in the Senate; that is, it swept all positions, winning both seats in each of the eight senatorial districts, as well as electing its six at-large candidates. The PDP managed to elect five of its six at-large candidates (there are 11 at-large elective seats). Since the NPP elected 22 senators and the PDP minority only 5, the PR Constitution's minority representation rules are activated. The Constitution guarantees the minority a minimum of 9 seats. Having elected only 5, the PDP is entitled to four add-on seats, who will then be considered at-large senators. They will be Sen. Juan Eugenio Hernández Mayoral, the losing at-large candidate, Sen. José Luis Dalmau and the two candidates from the Guayama district. These last 3 were the district candidates that lost by the smallest margins. Sen. Dalmau was recently reelected Senate Minority Leader for the new term.

A few significant analitical points:

-Sen. Dalmau is serving his third term as PDP Floor Leader, quite an accomplishment.

-Outgoing Sen. President McClintock transformed a small 9-member minority into a very comfortable 17-member majority and, now, the constitutional maximum of 22.

Hello again! Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I've been reading your son's article about you. You've certainly had a very varied life with lots of interesting adventures. No doubt that is partly why your writing is so interesting to read - you've had first-hand experience of many of, and therefore a feel for, the things you write about. Seeing you with political leaders - both Puerto Rican and American, including President Clinton - wow! What an honour!

Thank you for sharing what your friend told me about the Puerto Rican election. Thanks for that - I think I understand most aspects of it much better now. There's still one detail, though, that I can't quite understand : according to the table in the article, the PNP got 47.4% of the popular vote and all 16 districts; the PPD got 47.1% of the popular vote and no districts. That's what I don't quite understand : the popular vote was extremely close - the difference between the parties was a tiny 0.3% of the popular vote, but it produced a landslide - 100% of the districts! I'm just trying to figure out how that can be mathematically possible. That's why I asked whether you knew if the table was accurate or not.

The NPP won by a roughly 53 to 42 margin, with the new Puerto Ricans for Puerto Rico Party (PPR) and PIP divying up the difference. These last two parties did not reach the minimum threshhold to remain as registered parties and will have to collect about 100,000 signatures each to re-register. Sorry about the outcome of your DYK nomination; that rule can be frustrating, especially when you've taken a couple thousand characters of poorly written text and spent days changing it to a couple thousand characters of excellent text; unfortunately, however, there aren't enough volunteers or enough time at DYK to qualitatively evaluate the status of the article before its expansion began and thus we can only rely on the quantitative length of the article. It's a shame that we can't feature an article like this, but if everyone demanded that we perform a full evaluation of the quality of their articles before and after expansion we would never get through the large backlog of nominations we already have. Anyway, from what I can tell, the work you have done on this article is quite good and it seems like an excellent candidate for GA status, although I'm sure you already know all about that. Best, —

I've developed a "standardized" naming convention for my refs, which makes it easier to traceback later, and hopefully for other editors to pick up and use as well — Publication_AuthorLastName_yyyymmdd. I included date info, as it is often the case that items come from same paper/author on different dates. For books -- LastNameYYYY_p## or LastnameYYYY_pp##-##.

Wikipedia is famous for lame edit wars. I'm in a dispute over kishka. Don't let it get you down. Some of the information removed was a bit peripheral, but the major events that could be sourced should, in my opinion, be included. I saw the removal got reverted. But then it got redone. I couldn't really follow the reasoning, and I can't bear to read another argument at the moment :) . I'm willing to try to put most of it back and see what happens... What do you think? I'm not sure what resolution you are running on. Template:ribbon devices seems to misalign devices on any ribbon size below 106px when viewed at 1152x864 and above... my impression was that the majority of Wikipedia users were at least 800x600 or higher, meaning that a four across row would take up just over half of thier screen or less. To me, it'd rather have a table taking up space than dead whitespace. I'll have to do some more experimenting. to see if I can find something a bit less intrusive.

In any case, I can't imagine that too many people would take offense, but this is Wikipedia, and there are editors who will take offense to anything. I'll start with USMC bios, and if I don't hear too much complaining, I'll expand from there. I've done a few high-profile generals already, and haven't heard anything negative about it yet. I have recently remodeled a paragraph in one of the articles that you created and maintain named "African immigration to Puerto Rico (Black history in Puerto Rico)". I'm not sure if you actually wrote that exact sentence but I mean no dissrespect in rewriting it. The reason I did is because nobody can say that racism exists in all countries. I say this is because no one can say they traveled the world to every single country observing the populations for racist acts, nor can they know the true heart of individuals. I have family and friends from Puerto Rico and their experiences tell that Puerto Rico has racism, they are doing a damn good job of hiding it. I am sure there has to be a couple people with racist feelings or intentions in PR but what can we do for our retarded brothers or friends but pray for them and show them love/charity.

I wanted to ask you something about wikipedia law. If I create something and someone decides to take it down, what are my options? If I fix it and make it clear and understandable and true, I think it should stay up. Is it possible I can make a case to someone higher than the ones who deleted the writing? Please understand that I was never one against Barack Obama, but once I was conscious of the situation our country could possibly be faced with, I wanted to do something. It is really important to our country and the freedoms we have. With our freedoms come restrictions and responsibilities which is obvious. I, yourself and many others to get where we are today, we had to show everything, birth certificates probably being one of the more minor of all things.
