Redirect tagging

Hi Nyttend - your post on my talk was exceptionally offensive. I would have replied sooner but I have a terrible temper. In your post you don't tell me what redirect you refer to; nor do you give me any chance to defend myself but, worst of all - you actually threaten me that if I do not behave as you wish I might be sanctioned by more than yourself for - as you suggest - vandalism.

If you want to condemn me then please consider the worth of my entire input during the past month - I am in no way a vandal.MarkDask 03:28, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

Farm to Market Road 289

I'd have let this backroad die. If its creator wanted it on Wikipedia so back they'd have found a source to at least verify its existence. The benefit of this article does not, in my opinion, outweigh the liability of yet another unsourced, unpatrolled article. Magnolia677 (talk) 04:24, 2 January 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for your message back on my talk page. It was just a bit of frustration really. After 4 years of editing I have nearly 10,000 articles on my watchlist, and seem to be spending more and more time reverting unsourced edits. There's hardly any time to improve articles anymore. I stumbled into editing rap music articles about a year ago, and probably 95 percent of my edits there are reverts and vandals. I wonder when our collective ability to sustain the quality of the project will reach a tipping point. Anyway, all the best. Magnolia677 (talk) 18:20, 2 January 2017 (UTC)

Happy New Year +

I hope everything is going well and that you'll have a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year.

I just ran into a fairly strange article Oley Hills site and thought of you. It doesn't seem to be to be a hoax. There was (is?) a very old Lutheran church nearby. But the article itself seems quite isolated. Smallbones(smalltalk) 20:44, 2 January 2017 (UTC)

Google maps only can suggest that it is north of, or just inside the northern border of, Oley Township, Pennsylvania, which is an NRHP HD, near Oley Furnace. The pix in our article are too neat. But I'll let my curiosity play out, without bothering you too much (unless you ask). Smallbones(smalltalk) 20:52, 2 January 2017 (UTC)
OK, I've got a bit of a clue. "Isolated" in the sense of being an orphan, but also most of the refs and links were broken. Whoever started the article (I think I know) was something of an SPA on stone landscapes back in 2007. There's one academic article at [1] and I left a message for the author (though I have no idea whether he'll get it. See also [2].
Just guessing that this wouldn't quite meet notability requirements today, but in 2007 might have. I'll leave it alone and read the academic article, it is a quite interesting situation. Smallbones(smalltalk) 22:26, 2 January 2017 (UTC)

Superman

Hi, Nyttend. You made a good-faith edit at Superman, with a pretty funny edit-summary, actually, and I only reverted it since it's standard language at WikiProject Comics to say "fictional superhero" in the lead. This was the result of debate and consensus a few years ago, and if I remember correctly, it had to do with the larger thing of specifying "fictional character" in general. Anyway, you're a good editor and I wanted to take time and explain it since I didn't want to seem off-putting. --Tenebrae (talk) 01:33, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

User:JohnCD: Death real or hoax?

This has turned into a problem. I know you took the initiative in posting a memorial notice on JohnCD's talk page and in trying to confirm the message about his death. Please see the additional messages from the IP on my talk page and in the message section on JohnCD's talk page. I have been chastised and rebuked, justly if a bit strongly by a few, for being gullible and insensitive, for not confirming the message, etc. As I state in my longer message on the administrator noticeboard in response to the comments, I had a few reasons to think the message could be genuine and the followup messages now add some further reason for me to think that, even though that might add to my gullibility (good faith?). Then again, this may be the fake death news vandal that I did not know about. The followup messages have a little more information and seem sincere so that adds to my confusion, I guess. Also, the message was not posted to my talk page until the day John said he would likely return to editing. I saw that before I posted the message, thinking that a sincere message would not have preceded that date and that a hoax would not have much time to take effect after it. On the noticeboard, User:Someguy1221 stated he could not confirm a name as stated in the messages, presumably not being able to connect it to the account. So that seems to point to me being wrong. I have just realized that perhaps the fact these messages were posted on my talk page and not initially on JohnCD's talk page (though there are messages from the IP there now) might have raised some doubt.

I am leaving this message because you posted a notice saying you would try to confirm the news about John. I want to be sure you are caught up with the various further messages, the ones from the IP at least, and the doubt that has been raised. If you can confirm the news, please let me know. Although I won't be online much in the next few days, I would like to clear this up. I suppose we wlll be able to confirm this one way or the other within the next few days or weeks as a matter of course but I am somewhat disheartened by my seeming gullibility and waste of people's time. I have embarrassed and diminished myself by not handling this more prudently even if it is true but especially if it is not. At this point I am not sure what to believe. None of that is very important, of course, if the best resolution, that John in fact is alive and well, is the real story.

I thank you for crediting me with good faith by your actions with respect to this. Especially if this was a false report, but even if not, I sincerely apologize for any embarrassment or waste of time I may have caused you. I can affirm that was unintentional and inadvertent. It was only in an effort to do a good deed and provide what I thought was a needed notice. Regardless, it seems I should have handled this differently and better and it seems to have gone wrong whatever the truth turns out to be. Donner60 (talk) 13:42, 8 January 2017 (UTC)

Here is a message and further reply that I just received from the IP.
I understand from the guidelines for the Deceased Wikipedians page, here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deceased_Wikipedians/Guidelines that there is a procedure called checkuser by which family reports may be verified. Perhaps someone qualified to conduct this could do so, while those not so qualified could bide their time before making accusations of ill faith. Thank you. 92.24.244.137 (talk) 13:42, 8 January 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. I cannot do that myself but will pass it along to an administrator. Then I will be offline for most or all of the next two or three days. Donner60 (talk) 13:48, 8 January 2017 (UTC)

I checked in to see the status of the matter.

User:Keri has left a message on my talk page and the administrators' noticeboard confirming the original report of JohnCD's death. The noticeboard thread on this has been closed. I would have preferred to have been wrong but this seems to bring the matter to a definite end. Thanks for your work on and interest in this. I suppose no further apology is necessary under those circumstances, except for any waste of time my further post here which I do regret. Donner60 (talk

I received an e-mail from Mrs. Deas in which she thanks you for your thoughts about about John. It was sent a few weeks ago but I have not looked at the account for some time. I use it only for Wikipedia and rarely send or receive e-mail on it, and usually some talk page notice is also used by me or a sender as an alert, which is why this message has been delayed. Best wishes. Donner60 (talk) 04:59, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Waterside places categories

Hi Nyttend

At 02:33, 8 January 2017 I lodged an objection [3] to your proposed speedy renaming of >200 waterside places categories.

Yet at 02:50, you went ahead and placed them all for processing at

WP:CFD/W, in this edit [4]
.

That was not a good thing to do, particularly since you required your admin privileges to perform this action and you are

WP:INVOLVED. Are you going to revert promptly, or will I do it? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs
) 19:04, 8 January 2017 (UTC)

As I noted at CFDS, this decision was not open to opposition: I was merely following someone else's instructions in closing the CFD, and once I figured out how to use the working page, I listed the categories there to avoid the unnecessary wait. It's not WP:INVOLVED to do what another admin tells you to do. If you insist on using your administrative rights to impose your preferred decision in place of the CFD result, sanctions will be requested immediately: a block, for creating a large number of categories in defiance of a CFD result, and a desysop, for using your administrative rights unilaterally to overturn an XFD decision. Of course, if you want to start a new CFD, or if you want to go the DRV route, I'll participate in the discussion and likely oppose anything that disagrees with this CFD's result, but I'll have no grounds to complain about abuse of tools. Nyttend (talk) 20:59, 8 January 2017 (UTC)
Nyttend, wow. that's fairly aggressively unrepentant and hostile response. Nonetheless, I will take the bait, and revert the moves.
The categories were not tagged for speedy, and did not wait the requisite 48 hours before you moved them, from the CFD/S page to CFD/W. Nor were they tagged for CFD, so there was no mandate for a mass move. I will certainly challenge the mandate of any CFD closer to apply the decision to categories neither listed nor tagged for that discussion, but regardless of that the closer's instruction[5] was tonominate the relevant sub-cats for speedy renaming. Note that word "nominate", because it is not what you did. You did not validly nominate the categs for CFD/S, you did not follow CFD/s procedures clearly set out at the top of the page:
  1. You listed the categories at CFD/S, but did not validly nominate them for CFD/S, because you didn't tag them
  2. Having listed (but not tagged) them, you simply ignored an objection at CFD/S, having somehow decided that you had a right unilaterally overrule any objections -- despite there being no such exemption at CFD
  3. Having ignored the objection, you then proceeded to implement the moves barely 30only 46 minutes after listing them, despite the clear instructions at
    WP:CFD/S
that nominations must remain listed for 48 hours
  4. And you did all of this in respect of a CFD nomination which you yourself had made, so you were certainly
    WP:INVOLVED
That's a total of 4 ways in which you were out of order here. Regardless of what anyone things of the closer's decision, the closer did not instruct you to bypass CFD/S as you did.
I will proceed with reverting these moves, and you are of course free to make a complaint to [[WP:ANI] or wherever. But given what I have set out above, beware of
WP:BOOMERANG. I suggest that you would be much better advised to take a deep breath and try again to do this properly ... to ensure that 200 categories are out moved out-of-process. But it's your choice. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs

Updates required to Mansoor IJAZ article

@Nyttend: Dear Sir, my mother passed away on January 8, 2017 in Los Altos Hills, CA from complications tied to renal failure and was laid to rest on January 13, 2017 in Alum Ridge, VA. A formal obituary is under consideration as a news item at a major U.S. newspaper but in the interim, I thought I'd ask if you might be kind enough to make two updates to WP Article Mansoor Ijaz -- the first would be to update the bio box, adding (1936-2017) after my mother's name; the second would be in the Personal Life section at His mother, Dr. Lubna Razia Ijaz (January 27, 1936— January 8, 2017), was

Similarly, you may wish to check WP Article Mujaddid Ahmed Ijaz to see if it needs some updating as well.

Finally, I'd like to propose a new WP Article titled Lubna Razia Ijaz to document and chronicle some of the important facets of my mother's life. As was done with my father's article, perhaps I can create the initial draft in my sandbox and then let you and other editors take it through the paces to refine it and insure it is properly referenced.

Your assistance is appreciated. Thank you. Mansoor Ijaz (talk) 23:58, 22 January 2017 (UTC)

The PC2 RFC at WP:VPR

Do you know of any admin, or any group of non-admins, expressing a preference for ever using PC2 within, say, the last year, apart from the related discussion at WP:Pending changes/Request for Comment 2016? Normally, of course, the voting would suggest a snow-close without further discussion, but it's impossible to know ahead of time what the WMF's response will be, so it's a good idea to be clear with them about the state of discussions on the topic. My general sense has been that PC2 discussion has died down in the wake of the two new alternatives, the edit filter and extended-confirmed protection, but I admit I haven't been keeping up. - Dank (push to talk) 19:36, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

King and Queen County

Happy to be of help. I was down at W&M for my tenth reunion in the fall, and came back through King and Queen and a couple of the neighboring counties. (Hit West Point, too, and got some illustrations there.) I have some dusk-time photos of the courthouse in Warsaw to upload, and a few others as well from a couple of sites. (Got a nice panorama of the King and Queen County Courthouse, actually.) I wanted to do more on the trip, but ultimately didn't have nearly the kind of time I wanted. I may be getting back that way in April, in which case I've got a list of things I want to try and photograph.

I know what you mean about placeholders - some of the stuff I took in Warren County over the summer definitely qualified. Good to see some of those being replaced by decent-quality images.

You down in the Hampton Roads or Richmond area, by chance? I'm just outside of DC. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 03:13, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

I was out that way a few months back. Lovely country - we stopped off at Red Hill on the way home. I quite recommend it if you've not been. (Got a few pictures in Buchanan, too, and Natural Bridge.)
I have to say, having attempted some photography in Maryland...Virginia, for all its frustrations, is significantly better, in my experience. Check out National Register of Historic Places listings in Rappahannock County, Virginia - I managed to get something for each when I was out there in May, even if it's a placeholder. I tried something similar in Charles County, Maryland a couple of months later...it went significantly worse.
Talking of laws, I've been meaning to suggest to my delegate and state senator that they consider introducing a bill that would make all works of the Commonwealth government public domain, similar to what exists in Florida right now. That would have the advantage, I'd hope, of making anything produced by the DHR available for use. But I agree...the best bet is to get either landowners or local historical societies involved. I'd hoped that we'd have done better at that by now, to be honest... --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:20, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Towns in Virginia categories

Please stop deleting all the category links to Category:Towns in Virginia. At the top of that category page, it clearly says "For convenience, ALL Towns in Virginia should be included in this category. This includes all the towns that can also be found in the subcategories." Since there are 190 towns in Virginia, there should be 191 pages in this category, including the page 'List of towns in Virginia'. Please stop deleting them, as it is a constant struggle trying to put this categoy back to its proper state. JeffConn (talk) 22:13, 18 February 2017 (UTC)

Why are you reverting my changes? Adding the category Towns in Virginia was properly done. As can be CLEARLY seen on the Towns in Virginia page "For convenience, ALL Towns in Virginia should be included in this category. Just been poking around the lists for Gloucester and Mathews Counties - I know you said it was foggy the day you were there, but still, you got a lot of coverage. I'm jealous. :-)
Any plans to hit Campbell and Charlotte Counties soon? I was out there on a brief jaunt in July, and am still kicking myself for missing a number of locations. My planning wasn't where it should have been, alas. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:19, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

I know Campbell's pretty close by you - we came through Lynchburg on the way there, actually. Brookneal is a pleasant little town, but we only passed through, didn't have enough time to stop, and I didn't have my camera ready soon enough. Charlotte I'm less worried about for beating-myself-up purposes, as I got about everything I set out to get there. (Though when you do go out that way a couple of pictures of Keysville wouldn't be amiss, I don't think - we have one of the depot but nothing else.)
There's a pretty good possibility I'm going back down to Williamsburg at the beginning of April, and I'm beginning my Register-hunting plans for the trip accordingly. You've done many of the Tidewater sites I would otherwise have hit, so I'm considering setting my sights further inland - Cumberland and Buckingham counties especially. (
Charles Irving Thornton
has long been high on my list of prizes to seek, and I intend to do everything in my power to find it this time. We'll see what else I can dig up.
As for Fairfax County, the one unillustrated site is in a state park. My understanding from talking with the girl at the front desk a few months ago is that they don't provide directions to the site, as it's an archaeological ruin, but that if you stumble across it yourself then more power to you. So perhaps when the weather turns next month I'll give it another try.
Question for you - do you ever photograph communities? Because there are a lot in Virginia that still want illustrating, it seems to me. That's going to be another of my tasks on this trip in April. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:26, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
First, on Lexington: if you have a GPS-capable unit with battery, leave your car at an approved parking spot, put the site's coordinates in the GPS and put the device in your pocket, and use it as your guide through the woods, especially if you have to do some bushwhacking. This is the only way I've been able to reach several places in Ohio (e.g. the two Rocky Fork sites in Highland County, Ohio and the Cowan Creek site in Clinton County, Ohio), and this technique allowed me to find Battery Rock last spring after a GPS-less first attempt in 2013 left me at the end of the wrong trail nearly a mile away.
Let me know if you can find the Thornton tombstone; while I've not yet tried to get anything in Cumberland County, aside from the High Bridge and a nearby house, I remember from doing the coordinate-fixing that it's nowhere near the road, so I have no reason to expect that I'll find it without help, especially since I got the impression from that process that it wasn't in a park as claimed by the article. I've stopped in Keysville, although I didn't get any photos aside from the depot, because I wouldn't have made any stops if I hadn't been hungry.
Community photography isn't something of which I've done a ton here. A big problem is the scope — some counties have massive numbers of articles about unincorporated communities (many of which are just named crossroads, not real communities), while others have only a few; see {{Northampton County, Virginia}} and {{Russell County, Virginia}} respectively. This is relevant because there's often almost nothing else to do; in Ohio, I've done a ton of this (User:Nyttend/Ohio once listed most places in the state, but I've done the majority of work), but here there are so few towns and no civil townships (between municipalities and townships, even the least populous Ohio county, with big townships and few settlements, has sixteen separate jurisdictions) that it's impossible to be comprehensive with settlements and virtually impossible to know which of the settlements are actually important without visiting each one, and yet going just for the municipalities seems like you're only getting a tiny number of places. I do try to get photographs in spots through which I drive (e.g. see Pound and Imboden), and having put a photo column into the list of towns in Virginia, I hope to help fill in the gaps, but that's a future hope. Nyttend (talk) 03:59, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
Lexington's problem is that the coordinates are incorrect, as I recall (will have to check); I think they direct to the park visitors' center instead. I think I can find it just fine - the site's not really that large - as long as I do a bit of planning first.
The Thornton tombstone is on state-owned land, I believe, being located in Cumberland State Forest. It's damn near impossible to find on your own, but I've read that state forest rangers are more than happy to direct people to find it. It's not too close to the road, but I know others have done it before, so I'm sure I can do it myself (though I may go ahead and ask the rangers this time). Again...it's a question of time.
Community photography is something I try to do a lot of - especially as I tend to operate on the assumption that any community, no matter how teensy, is worth at least a stub article. (See Tryme, Virginia, for an example.) And a lot of those community stubs are my work, actually. :-) I get what I can when I can fill it in, but it's a long process - there's a ton even in Fairfax County that has yet to be illustrated, to say nothing of elsewhere in the Commonwealth. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 22:17, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
For Lexington, see the coords on the county list; they reflect the location shown here. Thank you for the correction on the gravesite, which is encouraging. The issue with mass stub creation just from GNIS is that it's more than occasionally wrong; I've found several stubs that GNIS called communities that weren't, whether the two I removed in this edit (both plantations), or the former article on
Grange Hall, Jackson County, Illinois (just a literal grange hall), and those are just the ones I've found by accident. Nyttend (talk
) 23:43, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
Regarding Lexington - that's much likelier. I'd have to look at one of the colonial maps...I seem to recall the ruins being further down the peninsula...but I could easily be wrong about that. I'll have a look in a couple of weeks when the weather turns, perhaps.
For the gravesite: this fellow visited it some years ago, and has a blow-by-blow account on his website, complete with photographs.
GNIS: interesting. I know it sometimes classes trailer parks as communities, but I didn't realize it was as bad as all that. It seemed better when I used to use it; my father has a collection of county maps of Virginia, and they always seemed to jibe with what I was finding on GNIS. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:38, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
Ser Amantio di Nicolao, I'm tempted to create some hidden "one-source" category specifically for articles relying wholly on the GNIS and/or USGS quads, which I include because I've seen lots of large plantations on the quads, marked as if they were communities. I agree that we should operate on the "recognized place" = "notable" model, but if an article doesn't have anything beyond USGS sources, I don't think we can assume that it's a community in the first place. Meanwhile, as I noted, I went southwest today, finishing off the NR sites for Floyd, Carroll (the hydraulic rams were hard to find), Grayson (including Sherwood Anderson's home, an NHL), and Smyth counties, plus getting a few Wythe spots. I would have gotten more, but I got distracted. Nyttend (talk) 05:14, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
That might not be a bad idea...could be very useful in weeding out bad ones. (Compounding the problem, I've found, is that there are plenty of instances where there is a community at the plantation site, independent of the plantation itself - I've run into that a number of times.)
Many, many years ago, right after my college graduation, my folks and I went down to western Virginia for a couple of weeks - it was the only time we ever got down there. My father's a Virginia native and was a long-time resident in his youth, but he'd never been out that far west. We hit a number of the places you've covered, but I wasn't a very active editor then, and there was no NRHP project, either, so I didn't get a lot of pictures. And the ones we do have aren't much use, either. (Like Dickenson County Courthouse - I remember seeing it, and there are far better angles from which to get a picture.) I'm glad to see some filling-in going on in that area, finally. (Talking of which, I see you're responsible for filling out the Register photographs in Lee County - did you happen to stop by Ben Hur while you were there?)
Sorry you got distracted, but at least it wasn't crippling. Someday I shall tell you about the comedy of errors that was my trip to Charles County, Maryland last year. I managed a few pictures, but not what I'd hoped.
Do you happen to have any plans to get north to Orange or Amherst Counties any time soon? Both are shockingly uncovered on their Register lists. I ask because I'm probably going down to Williamsburg to participate in an edit-a-thon next month, and am currently planning my itinerary there. As Tidewater's reasonably well-covered, and as I want to go inland to find the Thornton tombstone, I'm considering going as far as Orange County on my way. Haven't been out there in a while, anyway, and it's pleasant country. Once I find out about the time off I can take I'll let you know how my plans shape up. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 07:01, 5 March 2017 (UTC)

[unindent] I got the Dickenson County Courthouse back on 28 January, but EXIF says it was 6:36 PM, and sunset that day was 5:50 PM; my images are decent, but the current one is better. I got all the Lee County sites back in 2014 (except for the Keokee Store), one day before getting [7] and lots of other Kentucky sites; on the 28th I had to go way west, almost all the way to the Gap, to get a 2015 new listing. I apparently went through Ben Hur (from Jonesville, I went northeast through Pennington Gap to Keokee), but I have no memory of it, and Google Street View makes it appear that the sign you'd expect to see,  BEN HUR , isn't present, at least for eastbound traffic. Nyttend (talk) 12:33, 5 March 2017 (UTC)

Amherst is the same situation as Campbell; I go there all the time, but no photos because I'll hit it after DST comes. I've only once been to Orange, and I probably won't be back for a while, so go ahead and get it. I'm used to long trips; in early 2014, while in Bloomington, I daytripped Nashville, Tennessee (got over 100 sites), a few weeks later Kenosha, Wisconsin (with plenty of photo stops in metro Chicago), and later day trips to Hazard and Mayfield in Kentucky (while in Indiana, I got photos in all 222 counties of Illinois and Kentucky, with only a few overnights), so the far southwest isn't bad, as long as I have four intact tires :-) I've just been trying to get the far southwest first, and I'm mostly done; had I completed Wythe as planned, I would have photos for all non-archaeological spots in Bland, Wythe, and Carroll counties, plus Floyd and everything west of them. I guess that will have to wait for next time; I can try to finish Wythe, Pulaski, Radford city, and Giles, and maybe Montgomery too. Nyttend (talk) 12:44, 5 March 2017 (UTC)

There's actually a pretty decent shot of the Dickenson County Courthouse on Flickr: here. Quite an interesting user, who I've been meaning to contact to see if he'd be willing to release some/all of his images to Commons. He does release them under Creative Commons, to a degree, but flickr2commons doesn't recognize the license. Pity, as he's got some great shots of hitherto-uncovered sites and communities.
Not much to remember in Ben Hur, save the name. I think there was a gas station/convenience store when we were there in 2006, but that's about it.
Honestly, I'm glad you're in a position to manage southwestern Virginia sites, as there's not a lot of coverage down that way. Amherst I was actually in this summer - got a picture of the Bear Mountain Indian Mission School - but didn't plan well, and I wasn't on my own, so I couldn't do much. I'll leave it to you, as your camera's better than mine. :-) (Besides, if I try to do it and Orange in one day I'll probably knock myself out.) Orange is a manageable day trip from DC, at least...right now I'm thinking of cutting down through Culpeper to get there (maybe mopping up a few sites in Culpeper County, too), and tackling Cumberland and Buckingham counties on the following day. Beyond that I haven't thought through too much - I'll do a bit more plotting and see what I can find. Maybe Powhatan County also, we'll see. Charlottesville needs work, surprisingly; I should have thought that being a college town it would get more coverage than it has.--Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:42, 6 March 2017 (UTC)
Charlottesville's poor illustration status is temporary; I was there last week, and I got everything in the city as well as nearby county sites, so it will be 100% illustrated once I can get all the images processed. I even got some non-NR images; see the top of the Flash flood article for two of them. And college towns can have poor illustration rates, too; both National Register of Historic Places listings in Monroe County, Indiana (Indiana University) and National Register of Historic Places listings in Tippecanoe County, Indiana (Purdue University) had low illustration rates before I started hitting those areas. Nyttend (talk) 02:56, 6 March 2017 (UTC)
Oh, excellent. Charlottesville's been on my to-consider list for a while. Trouble is it's just too far for a comfortable day trip, and I don't have much of anything drawing me out that way generally. (I only hit all of
Tangier Island, most likely - if you have the chance I highly recommend you get out there yourself sometime. Fascinating place.) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa.
03:24, 6 March 2017 (UTC)
PS, see National Register of Historic Places listings in Warren County, Kentucky as it was before I went there and got a ton of pictures; even the Western Kentucky University campus had several un-illustrated places. Tangier's one of those places that I'll perhaps never visit, just due to the difficulty of transit; before some recent new listings, I had 100% illustration rates in 67 of Ohio's 88 counties, with address-restricted or access-restricted being responsible for the large majority of the un-visited sites, and one of the largest groups of places I could have visited and just didn't were the Ottawa County sites on Middle Bass Island, simply due to the time and expense of taking the ferry. Nyttend (talk) 03:40, 6 March 2017 (UTC)
Oh, Tangier's plenty illustrated - it's just an interesting place to visit. I was there once, several years ago, and got plenty of photographs, but I love it enough that I'd like to go back. Article needs work, though - maybe that will be my next project, sometime next year...
But I'm surprised at the dearth of images for Northumberland County, given its relative proximity to DC. And that goes for a couple of the other Northern Neck counties as well. (Hell, if I was so inclined I could probably be in King George County in a couple of hours - I used to know people who did that commute fairly regularly.) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 03:59, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

National Register redux

Excellent. I'm really happy to see all the work you're doing on western Virginia sites coming together. The progress page says that Virginia's now just over 75% illustrated; hopefully we can drive that up to 80% or higher in the next few weeks.

My own trip in a couple of weeks is starting to come together as well. Right now my plan is to hit as much of Culpeper and Orange counties as I can on Wednesday, and see if I can't pick up some sites in central Virginia - Buckingham, Cumberland, Prince Edward, maybe Amelia, Goochland, Powhatan, depending on how much time I have - on Thursday. I need to be in Williamsburg on Thursday night, and will be facilitating the edit-a-thon for most of the day Friday. Not sure yet what's going to come next. I had planned on heading up the Eastern Shore to visit a couple of college friends, but one is going to be out of town that weekend and one isn't responding to my texts. So I might end up going south and hitting a couple of the southern counties - Isle of Wight, Surry, etc. - before turning homeward. I've planned to take time off through that Tuesday, so I have some flexibility.

Here's hoping I can make some decent inroads into several of the remaining Virginia county lists. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:10, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

Ah,
Clifford-New Glasgow Historic District
. I went in search of that over the summer, but didn't have any luck; I think I turned out to be following either a wrong county map or a roadsign that wasn't very helpful. I could probably have found it with a bit more work, but we decided to go on our merry way instead.
The worst place I have found to attempt photography remains rural Maryland. In my experience, at least at most Virginia sites there's something to tell you you're on the right track, even if it's just a sign at the entrance to the driveway giving the name of the property. Not so in Maryland, when I was in Charles County last summer - about half of the ones I did manage to find were as much by luck as by anything else. And I had to skip three or four because they were so far off the road as to be invisible, with nothing to show where they were. (A driveway, perhaps, but no way of knowing which was the correct one.) I've never had nearly as frustrating a day in Virginia.
It's amazing, too, just how different the characters of rural tidewater Virginia and rural tidewater Maryland can be. I've always found the Virginia side of the bay to be so much easier to navigate, for whatever reason. It's odd. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:54, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
So...Tusculum's an interesting case. I wondered how it was demolished if it was owned by the Association for Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, so I did a little poking around. Turns out APVA sold it to Sweet Briar College, which then dismantled it and planned to reconstruct it on campus. But this turned out to be too expensive, so they ended up selling it to a couple who planned to re-erect it at another location. Last I've been able to find was information about the sale in 2014; I don't know if the house has been re-erected yet or not. Sadly, I doubt it will happen soon, if at all...such things rarely go off smoothly. (I wonder how much the purchase went towards aggravating Sweet Briar's financial issues, incidentally...) I haven't updated the article yet - too late in the day. I'll do it tomorrow, unless you want to get to it. :-)
Virginia's Department of Historic Resources is generally pretty good about things, I've found. Not just the proper listings/delistings, but criteria as well - I think it has about the strictest criteria for listing of any of the states of which I'm aware. Very few sites make it onto the state register and not the national one. The site's generally user-friendly, too. I'm not so keen on the use of PDFs, but that's a minor quibble. (Incidentally, Maryland's register is interesting - criteria for state recognition are far looser than they are for federal, so the list of properties is huge.)
Let me know when you're in metro DC - them's my stomping grounds. Although Register pickings in northern Virginia are slim by now - I think almost every one of the metro DC counties and cities is either at 100% coverage or nearly so. For myself I've moved on to illustrating CDPs and such. (Culpeper County is the lone exception, and I hope to hit some of those sites in the next couple of weeks.) Metro Richmond needs much more work - I have my eye on a variety of the surrounding counties as part of my trip, but am willing to bet I won't be able to get to them all. (Cumberland and Buckingham are givens...if I can swing Amelia, Goochland, and/or Powhatan I'd like to try.) One other western county you might consider - Madison. It's an easy enough day trip from the DC area, but I don't see myself getting out that way any time soon. (Perhaps Page County as well.) (Though I warn you, if you do go to Page County, finding the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church is a real lulu - I can't actually find a road to get there.) That will leave Southside as the only part of the Commonwealth that's not fully covered.
I haven't been out to western Maryland since I started NRHP-hunting in earnest. Maybe I'll try to change that someday, but for now I'd settle for helping to get Virginia over 80% illustrated. Preservation Maryland actually makes all of its images free on Flickr, which has been very useful. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:26, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
Ah, OK. Let me know if you have any questions about Fairfax/Prince William Counties - I've lived up here most of my life and would be happy to make recommendations. (Like Pohick Church, for instance - it's worth stopping by if you're in the vicinity, definitely.) Some interesting stuff in Alexandria, too, that's not on the traditional tourist inventories - I was quite surprised to discover that Wilmer McLean is buried there, for instance. Haven't found his grave yet, though not for lack of trying.
If you get the chance, Sweet Briar might be worth photographing, too - we have two or three pictures, I think, but not much more than that. Same with the Lynchburg College campus - I think there's maybe one photograph in the article? Definitely could stand more.
We had a house in Vienna that was dismantled in 2003 and removed from the Register a couple of years later. I never knew anything about it - Vienna's not too close to me - but I always assumed that "dismantled" meant that there had been a plan to reconstruct it. Not so, I find; apparently it was in such sad shape that it had to be taken down permanently. Pity, as it was a Revolutionary-era survivor, in my understanding. Apparently there's a marker at the site, and the family graveyard still exists; maybe I'll go looking for them in a few weeks when I have time. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:22, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

Consider it checked - response is forthcoming. :-) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:40, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, it's surprising to me how many colleges lack photographic coverage. I'd do more to change that, but pretty much everything within fairly easy access to me has been photographed. That said, I have a few more images from W&M from the fall - I should go put those up on Commons soon. Although...I can get a few from Catholic U. tomorrow, hopefully.
How was the weather down your way? It was something like 80 for most of the day here.--Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:41, 26 March 2017 (UTC)
Drizzly - yeah, sounds about right. That's about what it was like for much of the afternoon here, too - it vacillated between merely grey, cool and unpleasant and actually wet. But we're in a swamp here, so we do tend to get a bit hotter and muggier than other places nearby.
I wish I could say I'm surprised by your road troubles, but alas I am not. Transportation seems to be a constant issue around the Commonwealth. What's frustrating is it tends to be Northern Virginia which uses up most of the oxygen in the room. Wouldn't be so bad, except that local politicians seem to have little to no interest in understanding the needs of the rest of the state. Personally, I'm in favor of returning local control to most of those secondary roads - it's frustrating to watch them languish because Richmond has better things to do with its time (it thinks). (But then, I'm in Fairfax County, which has considered becoming an independent city to deal with some of the problems.)
Which districts are you in, out of curiosity? I'm in the
36th for Senate and 44th
for House - and I owe my Senator an e-mail in the next couple of weeks. I'll maybe mention the road issue to him; it's not likely to impact us locally, but he might be willing to get in touch with someone about doing something.
Incidentally, I was in uptown DC for the afternoon, and came home via Alexandria...and the locally-controlled surface streets there are absolutely pitted with potholes and in a generally miserable state. Funny - I thought they'd just raised taxes last year to deal with...oh, sorry. That was to give the City Council a raise. I kid, but not very much. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:04, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
There was a feature on the local news a few months ago about how sometimes people aren't removed from the voter rolls even if they ask because bureaucracy. As I recall, it took the reporter three tries to get his Pennsylvania eligibility deleted, and it only happened because he spoke to someone in person and she did it on camera. Twice filling out the form did nothing.
Can't help you as to which district you're in - cursory research tells me there are at least two in Lynchburg, and I don't know the town well; even if you told me where you lived I probably wouldn't be able to help you. You can try a letter to the editor; there's a fellow around here who writes at least one a week, which appears without fail in the local free weekly paper. It's gotten to the point that I notice if I don't see his byline for a week.
DC's a doable day drive from Lynchburg - Google Maps says you can do it in under four hours on the major roads. (Not sure I'm quite convinced of that, given the regularity of local traffic around here.) I suppose you could come up on a Friday night to have Saturday here, and go back Sunday. But I'd allow at least a full day, depending on what you want to do.
E-mailed, by the way. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:49, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
Ah, yes, those dead-end roads are fun. Ran into a couple while I was in Page County over the summer. Still find them on the way home from work from time to time. (If I have extra time I like to explore a bit, get to know part of the county a bit better. I find it helps me if I ever have to take a detour on the way home from work.
I have an event up in McLean tomorrow, and the weather's supposed to be pleasant, so I'm going to take advantage of it and do some photography, mostly around there and Vienna. I've found the site where Moorefield used to stand - the one site in the county that was removed from the Register after listing - so I'm going to get a couple of pictures of what's there. Otherwise there are a few CDPs I can illustrate and some historical markers I can photograph.
Congratulations on finishing up western Virginia. Once I've finished my jaunt next week I can better let you know what's missing from central Virginia - I suspect I won't be able to hit all the counties around Richmond when I like. (If I have to pick two, Cumberland and Buckingham are the ones at the top of my list, although I'd love to swing Amelia if I can as well.) Otherwise, I think it's largely Southside and Danville which needs the most coverage at this point. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:15, 2 April 2017 (UTC)
Found the ruin I was looking for: File:Site of Moorefield with marker and corner stones.jpg. It's actually amazingly easily accessible, and very well-marked; the city of Vienna appears to be genuinely sorry that it had to dismantle the house, and has not only made the remains the centerpiece of a nice little park but has also marked the family cemetery, which is just to the north. I have a couple of pictures of that, too, which I didn't upload yet.
Didn't quite get everything I'd planned yesterday - I had to do some digging around to find one cemetery, and then one grave, and that ate up more of the afternoon than I'd planned. I'm not too put out, because in doing my research I found some other things to photograph - couple of graves, a battle site, a CDP or two - that I hadn't expected, so on balance the day wasn't so bad. And it will give me a chance to go back out that way once the weather's warmed up some and do some more poking around. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:32, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
