Talk Page

I wonder if you could clean up my talk page by adding some links and pictures and templates like the three I currently have. For extra templates here is some help. I love football.I support ipswich town fc.I have heard you are a page renovator.Cheers,Gobbleswoggler (talk) 17:09, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

The golden rule of page renovation is that there has to be something to edit; your talk page is pretty bare (as is your userpage for the matter). Hmm I'm charmed I get requests now. Yeah I do that kind of stuff every once in a while. Why don't look in sandbox, it has a nice theme I've been storing for a while now. ResMar 17:13, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Reviews

OK, you asked for it. :-) I have some issues with both articles. Can post comments later today, maybe have some time to fix them later. Coincidentally, I just did an article on the largest landowner on the western slope, Henry Nicholas Greenwell (and now his great-grandchildren). Of course the owner of the other slopes now is probably USA. Might mention them too. Thanks for your work. W Nowicki (talk) 19:13, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Oooooh, I'm getting the thoughtful-and-deep-commentry shudder. Cometh the storm. ResMar 19:14, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

I did a round of work on it. Hope not too much damage. Just a remaining question on Google maps vs. {{coord}} As for Greenwell, coffee was just one facet of the business, so I shuffled the projects a bit. W Nowicki (talk) 02:44, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Diacritics: since even the article title of

GNIS
uses this convention: island has diacritic, state does not. It should be doing that now, it was close.

Now I noticed in your list article you call it "Big Island" which is what the residents of the state call it. I do not think that is encyclopedic, e.g. calling New York the "Big Apple", but does eliminate the problem. W Nowicki (talk) 15:48, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

I approved them. Alright, well I'm glad it worked out. Armero tragedy is being copyedited and now I'm waiting for that so I can ping Awickert to check out the science then do the references. I really want the article to be the best it can be, so it may be a while before we start Kilauea. ceranthor 23:19, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

While I wait...

I've just created 1949 Ambato earthquake, and I'll be working on it while I wait for your input. I'll be off later today, but you are free to email me with any other ideas you have. Right now I think Villarrica, Salado, Galeras, Cotopaxi, and Chaiten look interesting. Cerro Azul was an interesting project, as it had the two largest eruptions known in South America, but was a stub. (large as in output) So I feel the others will yield just as many odd but intriguing facts. ceranthor 19:37, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Ok, but we still need to handle the last two big articles :) ResMar 19:53, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
Which would be? ceranthor 19:54, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
Either Kilauea, or Mauna Kea. ResMar 20:05, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
Oh. I don't think I could take on Kilauea right now, having just written the bulk of Armero tragedy - there's simply too much information. I could do Mauna Kea though. ceranthor 20:15, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

No worries. His talk page is very amusing, though. Viriditas (talk) 21:19, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, it is, I guess. Then again so is yours:

Who or what is a black tusk? It may amuse you even more to discover that the discussion related to the use of opinion pieces is still ongoing, on multiple talk pages and noticeboards. I am, however, only one of many editors concerned about their misuse. Viriditas (talk) 22:06, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

People

If you have not noticed, I created two articles on people relevant to Hawaii volcanoes: William Lowthian Green (wrote some books in late 19th century) and Charles Henry Hitchcock wrote a 1911 book. You might want to link them up to articles on topics that they studied or published about. Also I added the template to Green's article, but not sure the category applies, since he is not a volcano himself! W Nowicki (talk) 21:57, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Hmm, I think that he would most appropriately be linked to 22:03, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Not sure what you mean. I was talking about both in the bodies of the articles on each topic, but certainly if one influences another they should be linked. Certainly Green and Dana seemed to interact much. Other issues are categories, e.g. do we need a "Hawaii volcanologist" category, or use an existing one? And templates: How about adding another line to the existing template listing people, or spinning off another one? Not sure where to draw the line, e.g. Titus Coan and Rufus Anderson Lyman were amateurs, but notable observers.

As for Mauna Kea, thanks it really needs work. There are some obvious errors right now: e.g. the saddle road goes across the saddle not up the mountain. Much missing from human history, Parker Ranch, the army base, David Douglas etc. W Nowicki (talk) 16:32, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Re:FPC

I will go ahead and nominate the image of San Fransisco, but I wanted to know if you would like the credit for the find. It will effect how I format the image for an FPC run. TomStar81 (Talk) 23:31, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

I would, thanks. I found the image whilst writing Seamount. It's a tad bit undersized but I think that it fits "iconic representation" well. Where else do you find a submarine with its front torn half open? :) ResMar 23:34, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
Actually its a perfect size; according to Wikipedia:Featured picture criteria the image needs to be a minimum 1,000px in hieght or width, not both. Your picture is therefore eligible. I'm going to start with the paperwork to get the image up; I'll leave a message here when I am done. TomStar81 (Talk) 23:59, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

RE: Subpage

Thanks. I've made a change or two to the write-up of it, without changing the meaning, just to demonstrate that edit count can be relevant (as in, when an editor only has edits in the hundreds - of course, in the early days, some administrators had such an amount, but it's difficult to justify it now). As an aside, I've been an administrator since 2005, and my edit count is still in the four figures; I'd probably get opposed for that today! Esteffect (talk) 01:26, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

Mauna Kea

Not sure what "never responded to my note on Hawaiian geologists on my talk page" means? Your edit notice implies you want to keep discussions on one talk page. Anyway, I still would like you hear your ideas about navigating the volcanologists. I would suggest adding a new group to the existing template for starters with the union of the ones listed above (can always add more or spin off a new one later). I should be able to work on it this afternoon after getting a couple more DYKs in the queue before the timers expire. W Nowicki (talk) 18:02, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

I think a seperate template is in order. The current one is already pretty bloated IMO. Template:Volcanologists related to Hawaii or the like. ResMar 18:07, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Hale Pohaku

Aloha, Resident Mario. I was going to contact you earlier, but had to take time off to attend to real life. I just wanted to tell you that I did a pretty major rewrite on the Onizuka Center article you started earlier today, both to amplify and add information, but also to correct a couple of mistakes you seem to be making. I think the article is clear now that HP is 5000 feet below and almost half an hour of horrendous driving away from the telescopes themselves, and that it is only the visitor centre that's open to tourists. Hope you don't mind my fixing that quickly - after all thousands of people . . . OK, someone, might have got the wrong idea. Anyway, I saw on W Nowicki's talk page that you are working on the Mauna Kea article itself, so it's nice to have another set of fingers on the job. I intend to try to lend a hand too. Best, Awien (talk) 22:19, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

It's ok, I don't own anything in particular. As for Mauna Kea, yeah. I still have to finish Human history and Summit Observatory, so there's still a lot of work to do, not to mention fact checking, copyediting, backlog, etc... ResMar 22:59, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Signpost: Pending changes trial

Hi, would you mind changing the wording of one phrase in the Signpost article.

You/your co-author described the second option in the poll as "slowly reintroduced into the mainspace". The actual wording is a gradual, limited expansion up to a max of 10k articles. The difference is the hard-cap on expansion. The point is that it's not a gradual rollout to the entire mainspace, but is capped at 10k articles. Would you update it? Thanks, Ocaasi (talk) 09:45, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Edited poll options to reflect language of the poll. Tried to notify article writer. Important to portray the options so readers don't have a misconception before they get to the poll.) I do need to sleep, you know =) ResMar 13:19, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Yes, my note was to let readers know I hadn't kept you in the dark about it, not to chastise. Then again, why aren't you working on the next signpost right now? Ocaasi (talk) 15:47, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
HeaB is informally charged with putting togethor important stories for the issue (ae. this diff). Most of the work in the signpost is conducted ~two days prior to publication. Editors are open and welcome to write up the section: n&n has been putting the whole paper off scedule lately, because no one wants to take the beat standard. Rest assured, I'll finish it before publication :) ResMar 18:15, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

I think that's it on the lead.
