Vital articles

You raise a very good point on the subjective nature of deciding what is most important. It's difficult to see Frida Kahlo as more important than Queen Victoria or Queen Elizabeth I for instance. I'm not too keen on there being different levels of vital articles and deciding what women or men are more important than others, I would rather just identify say 10,000-50,000 important articles across a range of fields (which I think most of us could agree on with fair representation of women bios) and run something which gives editors books needed to develop them. A $1000 top prize worth of books to the editor who works the hardest in a given year I think would be attractive., but at the end of the day nobody wants to feel forced to edit anything they're not interested in. I just find myself frequently unimpressed by the average quality of articles on locations and some very notable people, a lot of articles need restarting and researching properly from scratch. I think it's time something big was run which focuses on this area. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:21, 23 August 2022 (UTC)

Dr. Blofeld I guess my take on it is yes, we need to properly research a lot of articles and improve their quality, but I am not convinced that vital articles is a worthwhile project and have no desire to work with it. The group that dominates it and its discussions have no discernible expertise for determining criteria of what is and what is not "vital", IMO. I do think there is a need to improve the quality of basic articles across a range of fields and certainly think that providing materials is key. The Wikipedia Library has greatly improved its services in this area and the resource exchange is fabulous, but yes, even with those, there is always a need for more sourcing access. If such a list were created and had nothing to do with that Wikiproject, I might be interested in participating, but I cannot commit to it. I personally would not want a prize, but if a prize could mean availability of sourcing for all members of WIR or WIG, that would be amazing. SusunW (talk) 14:27, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
If you think of Wikipedia as building a house, then every brick is important of course. Every article should be important to us and of good quality. For me personally, regardless of the vital articles project and rating articles for importance, I want to see entries I'd typically find in a 1000 page traditional book encyclopedia of consistent high quality on here and we're really underachieving with this. Articles you expect to be sound often have poor sourcing, uneven coverage and bloated text. We need a mechanism to get people working on stale old articles and to have the courage to fully rewrite them. Perhaps I'll draw up my own A-Z core list which avoids levels and rankings, with a much fairer mix of both men and women bios and run something at some point. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:59, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
The problem with consistently keeping the quality high IMO is that anyone can edit. On the one hand, we all have access to different sourcing, so potentially there is opportunity for improvement. On the other, motivations of editors and their skill levels vary greatly, thus the quality of sources and articles is easily eroded. If you ever some up with such a list, Eleanor Roosevelt, as the architect of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, would be on my list for inclusion (and possibly I'd personally place her near the top ). Bookku, 'Encyclopedias = expanding information & knowledge' (talk) 11:24, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

Bookku I honestly don't know the answers to these questions. There is a reason I rarely write about living people, even if they are notable. If I do write about a living person, they are very likely to not be controversial. I'm not necessarily comfortable in drawing the line between the public right to know and the right to privacy, thus for me, I err on the side of privacy. Wiki probably has some other take on it, but for me, it's easier just to avoid the whole issue and write about historical figures. SusunW (talk) 04:39, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
I do very much understand and no issues. I had to share RfC communication to others so I had to share with you too.

Hello Susun

I hope this message finds you well. I just wanted to stop by for a moment and tell you how much you are appreciated. You take on so much and you do so much here. Beyond just being a prolific writer you also lead discussions. There are many that value your view points and the advice you give. It becomes even more valuable as they start to see the fact it is correct advice. Your impact on the lives that make up this community and on our journey here is undeniable. I love your Song. I love your Colors. I love your contributions to this encyclopedia in both discussion and creations. --ARoseWolf 13:39, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

And my day just went from being nondescript to joyous. Thank you for your encouragement, ARoseWolf. The feelings you express are mutual. I love that you spread joy. SusunW (talk) 14:20, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
There has been enough darkness in our lives, past and present. Spreading joy and encouragement is the least I can do for those that bring so much of the same into my own life. --ARoseWolf 14:23, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for both new articles. I loved Sophia's story. I think you did an excellent job of being respectful yet explaining the story as depicted in reliable sources. There may be nuances that some may disagree with but I believe you did amazing work as usual. --ARoseWolf 20:16, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks. It was truly difficult and I'm not sure it could have been done without Amos Wright's work to analyze the conflicting accounts and make sense of them. But, I am pretty sure that we can get articles for Sehoy Marchand and Sehoy Weatherford using the same sources as Durant and possibly for Jeanette too. SusunW (talk) 20:22, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
If there is a way I am sure you will find it. You truly are an inspiration. Oh, how's the weather there? I haven't really been following the tropical scene down there this year like I was last year but then I also had more time to sit around thinking. --ARoseWolf 13:29, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
ARoseWolf, I added both Sehoy II and III to WIR's lists. I think I am going to tackle Sehoy I, as it will be harder, but since so many leaders came from her line, I think she is an anchor article. Weather is typical, 80-90F every day, rain for about an hour or two. So far (knock wood) no major storms this year. Those usually come early in the season (June) or late (October-November) so we'll see. SusunW (talk) 13:55, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
Here's hoping no major storms for you this year. We're seeing highs in the low to mid 50's so Summer is ending fast. I think looking at the forecast for next week we will see some freezing temps at night. We're now moving into our twilight phases at night so that's a welcomed change from the constant day. Rain hasn't switched over to snow yet but that will come soon enough. I'm excited about the potential this article has opened up for you and for the project. --ARoseWolf 14:05, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
ARoseWolf "low to mid 50's" (bleh, looks over to where her only sweater is securely stored to make sure it's available) sounds horrible, but I think I would have problems with perpetual day, so moving into nights would be welcome. Yes, me too. I think there are more 18th and 19th century native women in the records that we should cover. It's mostly a matter of ferreting them out and making sure that there are good sources that have reanalyzed the colonial historical records which tended to be skewed and patronizing. The colonial records are either totally flowery and pro-colonist, or totally negative and anti-Native. Fortunately there are good ones for this particular line. SusunW (talk) 14:14, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
Ha! You would be all bundled up while I would be swimming in the creek. The water temp is a cool 42° as it runs down from the mountain towards the lake. I prefer swimming in the creeks than the lake. The running water is so nice. The best ones, though, are the seasonal streams that form with the thaw. The water temps are just above freezing as it falls off the mountains.
I run into sourcing issues all the time. Some of the biggest issues with articles on Native's or the treatment of Native's is the fact the majority of sources from that era will not criticize the actions taken by colonial and empirical powers and only seem to criticize the Native position or downplay the affects on them. I guess it should be expected that colonial's would not criticize their own actions so much. What is disheartening is the fact that people today will actually use those sources to somehow say that its the established and proper view to utilize.
I didn't grow up knowing about my ancestors. That's the one thing I struggle with internally in regards to my family. My mother's sister, a very lovely woman, only got to be around me for less than a year. She was there when I was born and was the first person to see me. When my mother passed she would have accepted the role of bringing me up but my father was so lost and not thinking clearly. In the eyes of the white man my father had custody rights over me. I don't hate him but I do blame him for me losing a part of who I am for such a long time and now I just feel like a fish out of water. I was brought up okay, lots of love, but not complete and I feel that heavy on me and my heart aches.
Back to the issues with articles, we should update our articles as the sources update the further we get from events. Wikipedia is not necessarily a historical encyclopedia, though we do record notable historical events, it is for today's reader and should reflect the most modern definitions. --ARoseWolf 14:46, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
ARoseWolf I grew up knowing about the majority of my ancestors, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Very early my rose colored glasses came off and I recognized that there are always multiple truths, multiple perspectives, and the grey area between two poles is always broader than the opposing endpoints. But, I digress. Yes, in a perfect world, all those historical sources would have been updated and analyzed, but they haven't been. As Wikipedia is simply a mirror of other sources, it is hard for those lacking background in any field to discern what may or may not be neutral sourcing. Me, I am usually more focused on the grey areas, so I always look for broader portrayals. SusunW (talk) 15:08, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
I've had every opportunity to lose my rainbow colored glasses, yet I can't. I know terrible things have happened. I've experienced some in my lifetime. We all go through those things and they are truly traumatic. I look at these stories of these amazing people and everything they have went through. I can both appreciate the hardships faced by settlers moving west in the US and feel empathy for the devastated cultures as the result of them resettling. Regardless, no one today is to blame for those actions so why wouldn't we discuss a modern interpretation when that interpretation can be found in sources. I don't think we should get rid of the recorded past but if Wikipedia is a mirror and does reflect the most reliable sources then those sources would be relevant to the time in which we live. That may change for future generations and their task will be to take up this torch and continue to edit and write according to the sources in their day, not necessarily remove what was there before. --ARoseWolf 16:04, 30 August 2022 (UTC)

Query re Good Articles

Thanks for involving me in the GA process for Gerlin Bean. It was interesting and a good result. Just wondering, apart from getting help improving an article, why do people try to get Good Article status? Is it because it lessens the risk of an article being removed? I am wondering if I should try to get it for the page I made on the Pinwill sisters or not.Balance person (talk) 12:02, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

Balance person I do it because having new eyes on a page helps me to ensure that I have remained neutral, had not inserted OR, and that it is well-written and understandable to a wide audience. For me, the goal is always quality and improving it. And yes, it also would be rare, as long as the reviewer was thorough (you do occasionally get a volunteer who doesn't really review the article well, which is difficult) there is little risk of such an article being deleted. I read your Pinwill sisters when I saw your post on Ian's page. I definitely think it meets the criteria for GA and had I written it, I would nominate it. SusunW (talk) 16:02, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

Date query re Ebba Ramsay

You've been doing some awesome writer bios recently! I have a puzzle about Ebba Ramsay and Catharine Sedgwick. You say of Ramsay: "She had published translations beginning in 1852 with a two-volume work based on Catherine Maria Sedgwick's 700 page book analyzing the benefits of whether or not to marry". I take it the reference is to Sedgwick's novel Married or Single (1857) - but how could Ramsay manage to translate it five years earlier, in 1852? I'm confuzzled! Thanks again for all the extensive & detailed bios you manage to produce. Dsp13 (talk) 07:10, 16 September 2022 (UTC)

Dsp13 I am completely baffled as well. I spent over 3 hours looking for the answer to the riddle of what Ramsay's work might have been based upon. I finally decided that surely my obsessive side had kicked in and no one else would have spent that amount of time on it. Your confusion makes me think I should have continued to search. I honestly have no idea how a book could be translated before it was written (which is what it appears to be), but every source I found for Ramsay's version places it in 1852. I thought maybe Sedgwick had published something else (perhaps a series of articles, etc.) that she later republished as Married or Single, but I couldn't come up with something that would run to 700 pages. Any help in unraveling that mystery would be appreciated. SusunW (talk) 16:16, 16 September 2022 (UTC)
I'll take a look over the weekend and see if I can help with the unravelling! Dsp13 (talk) 16:22, 16 September 2022 (UTC)
Thank you so much Dsp13. It is also possible that someone misstated the date on Ramsay and others repeated it, but then how could that have been her first translation? Sources all say she began translating before she published her own works and that was her first, so again it is muddled. My hope is always that someone with more access to sources can add to the articles I write. Access here in Mexico is often blocked to US/Canadian, European websites, so I recognize the value of collaboration and welcome it. I look forward to seeing what you can find. SusunW (talk) 16:30, 16 September 2022 (UTC)
@Proscribe: I don't know if you were aware of the conversation Dsp13 and I were having about that very issue, but thank you so much! It does take a village. SusunW (talk) 20:56, 19 September 2022 (UTC)
Wow, Proscribe that is awesome. For some reason I hadn't found that articler (and unfortunately I can't get behind the Notes & Queries firewall) but I second SusunW's thanks! Dsp13 (talk) 21:28, 19 September 2022 (UTC)

Hello Susunw, I just started an article on a medical writer, Hilah Thomas. I found her year of birth (1909) but not an obituary/date of death. I know from a source in the article that she was still alive in 1999. FYI- there is a different Hilah F. Thomas who lived in Virginia and Maryland who graduated from the same alma mater (Smith College in 1958). Could you take a look? Thank you! TJMSmith (talk) 13:46, 9 October 2022 (UTC)

Thank you! If you happen to be able to identify her DOB, that would help fill this out. I know she was born 1909 in Charlottesville, VA, but not the date. Maybe this is in her ancestry records? Collab?

Hi Susun, hope you're well. Nice work once again on Foote. I rewrote Theodora Kroeber at some point, and took it through GAN. I think it's in decent shape, and I have ambitions of going to FAC, but I think her anthropological work and early biography would need fleshing out; and I suspect you're a lot better at that sort of thing than I am. Can I interest you in a collaboration? I'm in no hurry, I'm looking at picking it up at some point in the next few months. Vanamonde (Talk) 17:01, 12 October 2022 (UTC)

Vanamonde93, I'd love to. (They found my lost wire so all is good!) I'm working on a couple of articles for Women in Green's editathon this month, but am happy to start on it in November if that works for you. SusunW (talk) 17:09, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
I believe mid-November should work well, thank you! Looking forward to it! Vanamonde (Talk) 17:36, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
Vanamonde93 It will be interesting to see how the source review goes on Foote, as it may have implications for working on Kroeber. For example, Buzaljko (p. 188) says Clifton died in Santa Fe. I am like, what were they doing there? First thing I found was this, which made it look like they were vacationing ("home" in Berkeley burned). Then I found this which said he died in Denver on the way back to Berkeley. I questioned if it was the same Clifton Brown as his occupation was given as artist, but found his obit, which clearly shows (even though the name is wrong in the headline but correct in the body) it is the man who married Theodora. My point here is that if we are limited to scholarly journal and book sources on FA, which may be the case, there isn't much reason to work on women for FA because the best sources available to document their lives and ensure accuracy are newspapers, women's journals, and the like. SusunW (talk) 18:43, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
Then I found this October 1921 birth announcement which made me question the marriage date of July 1921 given in Hines. Discovered the Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection, which has a 1920 marriage notice, which makes far more sense. I'm not sure if I should continue searching or just wait at this point. SusunW (talk) 19:09, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
I don't think newspapers are an issue where coverage is scarce; certainly newspaper obits will have detail that scholarly biographies sometimes skip. I've used newspapers fairly frequently at FAC. I would question their use only for recent figures with a plethora of information available. If anything is likely to be questioned at Foote, it's the FamilySearch sources...which, again, I understand why you used, but I'm sure we can get by without for a far more recent figure. While I don't want to suggest Kroeber didn't face challenges for being a woman, certainly she received widespread recognition in her own time...All of which is to say I'm happy to wait as long as you want, but scholarly material isn't lacking, and newspapers ought to be fine, so I'm not worried. Vanamonde (Talk) 19:40, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
Thank you. Knowing that newspapers aren't routinely discounted is somewhat of a relief, Vanamonde93. So, I shall just continue gathering things on Kroeber. SusunW (talk) 19:46, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Jindřiška Flajšhansová

On 18 October 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Jindřiška Flajšhansová, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that from 1912, Jindřiška Flajšhansová was the principal editor of Ženské listy, a Czech journal that became a women's "survival manual" during World War I? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Jindřiška Flajšhansová. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Jindřiška Flajšhansová), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. October thanks

October songs

Thank you for improving articles in October! - Look for mine: two favourite concerts were on DYK, and too many on RD (three yesterday). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:02, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

Lovely! Thank you for your encouragement. Ian and I have been working on a Mexican opera singer and environmental activist. It was fun to discover her and fascinating as they aren't typical careers that a single person does. SusunW (talk) 13:02, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
absolutely! - who shall separate us? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:12, 22 October 2022 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt Congrats! I honestly don't know how you produce so many DYK articles. You're legend. I am so happy that Aza24 is reviewing the article on Enriqueta Legorreta! It's coming along nicely with guidance for all the myriad things I have no clue about regarding opera. SusunW (talk) 18:08, 22 October 2022 (UTC)
It's easy: I write about the little songs, not complex biographies. Looks promising the unusual woman! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:15, 22 October 2022 (UTC)
Thank you so much for fixing her. Aza24 thinks the concerto is the same one you thought it was. :) SusunW (talk) 20:31, 22 October 2022 (UTC)
That was fun to do! - Today a woman in red, cellist Ella van Poucke, with a video in the article --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:43, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
Listening to the video now. I love both cello and viola. The deeper richer tones are fabulous! SusunW (talk) 18:51, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
Love it. I took the pic, DYK? - Completely different question: could you imagine to take an article to FA again for IWD? I was asked about Christmas, and realised it's too late, so preparing something for March might be a good idea. I have the feeling that many of your GAs are almost there. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:17, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
I did not know that you took the photo. Perhaps Eunice Newton Foote? She was one of the signatories of the first women's rights convention ever held and hopefully will pass soon? SusunW (talk) 19:57, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
Looks promising to me. When I wrote the above, I had not seen that you had encouragement by two masters further below. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:30, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
Well, right after I wrote that above, it was promoted, but the bot hasn't caught up with it yet. SusunW (talk) 21:47, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
That was one of my wishes fulfilled fast, I must say. Congratulations!! Should I bring it to the
pending list or will you? --Gerda Arendt (talk
) 22:02, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
I am 100% sure you did this for my last 2 FA. If you don't want to, I can try, but if I have my druthers, it would just miraculously happen . SusunW (talk) 22:07, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
"druthers"? - anyway, I can do it, and next time you do it ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:13, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
Probably a Southernism sort of a contraction for "I'd rather", but a noun. And thank you. SusunW (talk) 22:20, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
Done but we have an date conflict with a road that was opened 40 years before that date. Telling Wehwalt early. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:29, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
What date are we talking about? Wehwalt (talk) 23:21, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
Wehwalt, International Women's Day, March 8th. SusunW (talk) 02:41, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
Suggest putting it in the pending template for now at
WT:TFA/R and nominate when the time comes. Wehwalt (talk
) 03:40, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
That was done before I even commented here because of the conflict - a road's opening (which seems rather local to me) vs. the internationally recognized women's day. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:08, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
@Wehwalt and Gerda Arendt: Thank you both. SusunW (talk) 12:53, 29 October 2022 (UTC)

leaving the month with reformation and a cat treat --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:24, 31 October 2022 (UTC)

Gorgeous, and what a beautiful kitty. SusunW (talk) 18:21, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
