Not actually a Victorian, but...

Hope I can help with some of the tasks, particularly those in the geographical or political sphere. Orderinchaos 15:04, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A couple of questions...

Re second - maybe they might take a clue from the WA project - we have tried to keep WA=yes items separate from Perth=yes items -as most of the subjects/articles are one or the other.
SatuSuro 00:32, 23 December 2006 (UTC)[reply
]
Re the first - if Victoria BC ever gets its own project, they can always call it
Greater Victoria
as any article would have to include Saanich, Oak Bay, Sooke etc...
Re the second - my suggestion would be the following schema:
If it relates to the state as a whole, or (state) government, should be in WP Victoria
If it is outside of the region which Melbourne takes responsibility for, should be in WP Victoria
Melbourne has taken responsibility for all areas including and
Melton, and the Cities of Hume and Wyndham
.
This is only my thoughts - feel free to add, clarify, disagree etc Orderinchaos 02:43, 23 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"I was born, lucky me, in the land that I love." Victoria, Ray Davies.

There is a more famous Victoria. Hmm, another project idea. The name is likely to lead to confusion. I also think the canadian state and other 'Victorias' scattered around globe would justify a project merely to list them. See also Victoria. Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 20:17, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment templates

Does this project really need to use such a *loud* (and dare I say, ugly) template? An example is at Talk:Melbourne. (diff)? Could it be toned down a little to better match the remainder used? -- Longhair\talk 06:46, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For those who click after this point - the "GA" green icon was previously three columns high and just over half a page wide. It was very green, and very loud. Orderinchaos 07:35, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My personal opinion - does it even need one at all? The WA and Tasmanian wikiprojects have been able to get by just fine with the generic Australian one, marking "This is supported by Wikiproject ____" using the tags. A big advantage in doing things this way is updatability - the less things you have to update, the more likely they are to be properly updated. Also shared resources - the WP Australia assessment team is capably and well staffed, whereas WP Vic has a low membership at the present time (although will grow) so is not really in the position to assess its own articles just yet. By the time it is, we'll probably have figured out a way to incorporate that into WP Australia. I did fix what appeared to be a colspan error in the WP VIC box which created the loud look :P Orderinchaos 07:32, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm brainstorming a system where all Australian articles will share the one assessment system, based on the Military history model. Hopefully we'll end up with a 'one shoe fits all' type of arrangement, where the master project provides for sub-project assessments by default. -- Longhair\talk 22:51, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nhill railway station

Nhill Railway Station is now served by the Overland. As every other station served by a passenger service in Victoria has a page, can Nhill have one too and be linked to the other pages? Thanks.

Timbarra

Not sure if this is a suburb or other locality? Does this need deleting or improving?Garrie 00:45, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Timbarra is actually a place north of Buchan in Victoria with a nice little campground on the Timbarra River. I know that the page mentioned in this section was written about Timbarra estate in Berwick. It should be deleted, not re-directed 8==8 Boneso (talk) 10:58, 27 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Commons gallery page

Not sure how active this project is at present, but for those interested I have created a gallery page for Victorian towns at commons:Towns of Victoria. -- Mattinbgn/ talk 21:39, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Inactive?

Is this wikiproject inactive? I guess there are several active editors working on Victoria related articles that are members of this Wikiproject, but this is not being utilised as a collaboration tool. Thoughts? aliasd·U·T 00:46, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure how active this project has ever been. I have found the project tag/s useful, but this page has seen much use at all. -- Mattinbgn\ talk 04:40, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This is all true, we created it admittedly more as a classification device anticipating that it had the potential for use as a collaboration tool later on. Ultimately it means we don't have stuff drifting around in Australian Places with noone knowing of its existence :) I think also quite a few people are on wikibreaks or busy offline atm which doesn't help. Orderinchaos 08:58, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
To be clear, I am all for keeping this project (and establishing projects for SA and Qld as well) for the reasons you state above. All it takes is a two or three keen editors to get started and these project pages will become useful and it gives people a place to start if they want to start some collaboration on Vic. articles. -- Mattinbgn\ talk 10:10, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

School Categories

Just looking to cleanup "Category:Schools in Victoria", so that it can be like many of the other school categories in Australia. Basically i want to delete "Category:Schools in Melbourne" and "Category:Schools in Geelong", so that what is left is state-based categories, such as; "Category:Private schools in Victoria", "Category:Public schools in Victoria" and "Category:High schools in Victoria". For a good example, look at "Category:Schools in Western Australia. Please leave comments below. Twenty Years 15:33, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Railway line merges

At present was have a whole stack of railway line articles that consist of no more than lists of stations - see

Template:VictorianRailwayLines. In addition, each physical line is divided up into multiple subsections based upon what V/Line services operate on it, and the history of all lines are mashed together at Rail transport in Victoria
.

I carried out a merge of all railway lines into the relevant regions are used by V/Line - Seymour railway line, Victoria, Ballarat railway line, Victoria, Bendigo railway line, Victoria, Geelong railway line, Victoria, and Gippsland railway line, Victoria, and intended to move the history of each 'main line' and relevant 'branch lines' into one of the five relevant line pages, but it got reverted.

At the present time we just have stubs everywhere of station listings. So what are other people's thoughts? Wongm 09:34, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The merges were complete original research - no one uses these groups according to "physical lines" as you put it. All of these lines are commonly viewed as seperate lines, and are - in effect - seperate lines that branch off a couple of main ones. There's tons of room for expansion of all of these articles - history, technical details, etc - it's been one of my planned projects for ages. I see no purpose for these merges apart from to make things more confusing. Rebecca (talk) 03:39, 17 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There are a number of definitions of the lines. The two we should probably consider here would be:-
  • The V/Line Passenger model of Intercity lines with Interurban branches/continuations. See the key on this V/Line map.
  • The "Railways" model of mainlines and branch lines. See this interactive map at Vicsig.
I'm not sure which would be better... --Evan C (Talk) 10:22, 17 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'd go with the latter. It's the one we've used for historic railways in the past, and it's also the one that makes most sense to laypeople. Any move that means that someone looking for the Swan Hill line gets redirected to the Bendigo line is just going to elicit confusion. Rebecca (talk) 00:01, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Swan Hill redirecting to Bendigo is more logical than Shepparton redirecting to Albury. --Evan C (Talk) 05:19, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies to watchlisters

If you had a whole bunch of former LGAs watchlisted, you probably saw a lot of me on your watchlist today :) The reason for this was finally getting hold of the actual ABS census figures for the articles I wrote earlier for Victoria. Orderinchaos 03:23, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Post Offices

A useful online resource is the Premier Postal History list of Victorian Post Offices past and present with opening/closing dates etc.-Whilst designed for philatelists this has been meticulously researched over the years and highly accurate, the primary sources mainly being PO archives. Part has been published in book form. Ive added a few -see

Wodonga, Victoria
-There appears to be a lot of work to be done on the establishment (reason for coming into existence)and history of towns and the date of PO opening is a good indication of the first appearance in an area of a modest population The code is ref name = "b"Premier Postal History, Post Office List, retrieved 2008-04-11/ref (with the brackets added) Photos of POs may be available for use if you ask I will be doing the odd one but dont have a lot of time Epistemos (talk) 02:13, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Railway Station Photos

Someone deleted the Ararat Station pages for "improper license". I thought these photos had been freely provided for use on Wikipedia? Can someone please put them back - I can't find the page they came from. Alternatively, is someone able to go to Ararat and take some new photos of the platforms? JRG (talk) 02:51, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi JRG. See User talk:Rebecca#Victorian rail images for some background on this topic. I suspect there may be many more deleted unless the licensing is sorted out quickly. My knowledge of licencing requirements is nil unfortunately. -- Mattinbgn\talk 02:55, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
They're fine in the wake of the last conversation we had with the photographer, although I believe we do still need to clarify the exact free license that they're under. If you find one that has been deleted, please send me the image link (find it in the history) and I'll undelete it and explain the image situation on the talk page. I did this yesterday with Barnawartha, and I'm happy to do others as well. Rebecca (talk) 03:43, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
From the email I received mentioned in the other discussion:
He suggested the following tag be used (and gave me a link to where I could find the wording):-
"The copyright holder of this file allows anyone to use it for any purpose, provided that the copyright holder is properly attributed. Redistribution, derivative work, commercial use, and all other use is permitted."
I advised Andrew that I was happy for him to add this tag.
I just need to know more about this OTRS caper or whatever it is called, and how we link it to the huge set of images. Wongm (talk)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you

WP:ASSESS
.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of
    a rubric
, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as
    described here
    .

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please

leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Victoria geography stub discussion at
WP:WSS/P

Hi all - this is just to let you know there's a discussion going on at the stub-sorting project about how best to split up Category:Victoria geography stubs into subcategories. To cut a long story short, that category is getting over-full, so regional subcategories are being considered, probably each with individual templates for different counties or districts). The main problem is how to break the state into regions. Please feel free to make any comments/recommendations at WP:WSS/P. Cheers.

As an unrelated aside, BTW, is there any reason this project isn't listed in Category:Australia-related WikiProjects?

Grutness...wha? 00:30, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Victoria

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new

WikiProject coordinators' working group
, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 06:56, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is a notice to let you know about

fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here
.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

IPA [kaʊænˈdʒi] = Кауанджий possibly? (Not sure if the last й is necessary but I've never seen a Russian word end in и.) Orderinchaos 04:51, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Consider renaming this, as it stands it could refer to NorthEast England, NorthEast Canada, NorthEast Vietnam, just about anywhere. And perhaps consider deleting it altogether - is it really neccessary when you have Victoria Project? Jezhotwells (talk) 13:02, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agree on the vagueness of the name. And indeed, this would function better as a task force of WikiProject Victoria, if anything (see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject NorthEast#Merge with Wikipedia:WikiProject Victoria). –xenotalk 13:20, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Strongly support move to make this a task force. It is not even clear that the task force would work. The project page and its talk page were started on August 16th and have not been edited since then apart from a comment I have just put on the talk page. --Bduke (Discussion) 08:43, 5 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed with Bduke - the project appears unsustainable. Orderinchaos 06:26, 6 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There is no evidence that this project has led to any co-ordinated article improvement, and its two participants have been inactive since its creation in August 2010. It should be made a task force and renamed or possibly deleted if it continues to have no active participants. Melburnian (talk) 06:59, 6 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The second participant's last edit was signing up as a participant. The guy who set it up has not edited since a few day after he set it up last September. EPA Victoria

(moved from top of page) Hi all, I've been engaged by EPA itself to help develop the Wikipedia article for

EPA Victoria
. You can find more explanation about this (COI issues, etc.) on my user page.

It'd be great to have some help with this, even if all you do is tell me what I'm doing wrong :)

I do a lot of work with government agencies, helping them use Web 2.0. Hopefully EPA is just the first of many Victorian agencies that will responsibly maintain its own article... Thanks

--Mattcooperrider (talk) 03:57, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It is not "their" article. It is a Wikipedia article about a giovernment agency. Any editor can edit it. Just so long as you and they understand that. They have no approval rights over the page content. First off you need to find reliable sources that assert the notability of the organization. Jezhotwells (talk) 13:02, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Victoria articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Victoria articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

If you're participating or considering in participating in Wikimedians to the Games, you may be interested in attending the events below. They may provide an opportunity to get information to write a Wikinews article or to take pictures for points on Commons. If you're not participating, it would still be great to see people attending these events to take pictures for use on Wikipedia and Wikinews. If you do decide to attend, consider hosting a Wikimedia meetup at the end or the evening of the event, or even just letting HOPAU organisers know you are planning to attend. If you leave a message on my talk page, I can help you promote the meetup. :) If you need help with organising attendance because of transport cost issues or accessibility in terms of wanting press access, again please get in touch. :) --LauraHale (talk) 06:54, 18 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Requested moves of 30+ Melbourne street names

Editors here may be interested in this multiple RM that I have initiated. My preamble:

These articles are all concerned with street names in Melbourne. (I would have include another 17, but the template has a limit of 30.) I do not support these moves; but I know that some very active editors do. It is time to air the matter, once and for all. Is it better to have an article on Collins Street in Melbourne called simply Collins Street, or to have it called Collins Street, Melbourne as at present? Which option serves the needs of Wikipedia's worldwide readership better? In almost all cases that I list there is no content in the destination article, just a redirect. And in almost all cases there is no Wikipedia article that very closely resembles the Melbourne-oriented one. There are, for example, no other Collins Streets with their own articles.

Your vote ("Support" or "Oppose") would be welcome, along with your reasons.

Victorian Honour Roll of Women

I could use some help identifying women from the Victorian Honour Roll of Women. Specifically, there are several inductees from 2001 for which we only have a name. All of them are from Victoria or somehow associated, but I have been unable to determine who they were or why they might have been inducted onto the honour roll. The List of inductees provides no additional help except perhaps the occasional title or order. Gobōnobo + c 22:32, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:48, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"Victorian" as a disambiguator considered harmful

I noticed

John Gray (Victorian politician) when searching for John Gray (Irish politician); the latter's career was in Victorian Britain, so the former's dab is inadequate. I think Forename Surname (Victorian foo) should move to Forename Surname (Victoria foo). It's slightly less idiomatic, but that's a price worth paying considering the purpose of parenthetical dabs is to aid searching. "New South Wales politician" is a precedent: there are no "New South Welsh politician" dabs AFAIK. jnestorius(talk) 13:12, 12 November 2014 (UTC)[reply

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

WikiConfererence Australia 2015 - Save the date 3-5 October 2015

Our first Australian conference for Wikipedians/Wikimedians will be held 3-5 October 2015. Organised by Wikimedia Australia, there will be a 2-day conference (Saturday 3 October and Sunday 4 October) with an optional 3rd day (Monday 5 October) for specialist topics (unconference discussions, training sessions, etc). The venue is the State Library of Queensland in Brisbane. So put those dates in your diary! Note: Monday is a public holiday is some states but not others. Read about it here: WikiConference Australia 2015

As part of that page, there are now sections for you to:

  • indicate your interest in possibly attending the conference (this is not a binding commitment, of course)
  • add suggestions for topics to include in the conference: what you would like to hear/discuss (again, there is no commit to you presenting/organising that topic, although it’s great if you are willing to do so), or indicate your enthusiasm for any existing topic on the list by adding a note of support underneath it

It would really help our planning if you could let us know about possible attendance and the kind of topics that would make you want to come. If you don’t want to express your views on-wiki, please email me at [email protected] or [email protected]

We are hoping to have travel subsidies available to assist active Australasian Wikipedians to attend the conference, although we are not currently in a position to provide details, but be assured we are doing everything we can to make it possible for active Australian Wikipedians to come to the conference. Kerry (talk) 00:19, 20 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Folks, just letting you know we will not be proceeding with Wikiconference Australia 2015 originally proposed for 3-5 October 2015. Thanks to those of you who expressed your support. You are free to watch the football finals instead :-) Kerry (talk) 08:24, 3 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

New 5000 Challenge for Australia

Hi,

Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge for the UK which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. If you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Australia and Oceania like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1600 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for Australia but fuelled by a contest if desirable to really get articles on every state/territory and subject mass improved. After every 100 articles done for Australia this would feed into the main Oceania one. I will start a 1000 one for your state if there is the support. I would like some support from wikipedians here to get the Challenge off to a start anyway with some articles to make doing a Destubathon for Australia and Oceania worthwhile! Cheers.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:14, 20 November 2016 (UTC)[reply

WikiProject collaboration notice from the
Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the

WikiProject's talk page
.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   08:00, 30 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:25, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Regions, Sub-regions, & Districts

I have updated the list of regions and sub-regions on Template:Victoria to reflect those listed on the Victorian Government sites. See discussion Template talk:Victoria#Sub regions. -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 13:49, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Articles mixed up

It appears Mount Buggery (Alpine Shire, Victoria) has been mixed up with Mount Buggery (Wangaratta, Victoria). Co-ords on "Mount Buggery (Alpine Shire, Victoria)" page are in the Rural City of Wangaratta‎; while "Mount Buggery (Wangaratta, Victoria)" page are in the Alpine Shire. Will need all data to be checked. -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 05:12, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to

predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia
. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on

WP:CITEWATCH
and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Region maps

I have started on making region maps for Victoria. I am combining the individually shaded LGA maps. So far there are:

  • Hume region
    Hume region
  • Goulburn region
    Goulburn region
  • Ovens Murray region
    Ovens Murray region

Still to do are: Barwon South West (Barwon / Great South Coast), Gippsland, Grampians (Central Highlands / Wimmera Southern Mallee), Loddon Mallee (Loddon Campaspe / Mallee).
This is a fiddly process to combine them together, as I'm not normally a graphics person. I hope to get the others done soon. -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 07:38, 7 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This is now done.

Sample Navbox for Hume (and other) regions

Here is a sample of a new navbox for use on pages to do with the Hume region...

Are there any changes to categories on the left hand side (order, names, add different, remove)? Does it need a region map on the right?
The idea is to compliment how Template:Victoria is used on pages related to Victoria.
I'm aiming to make similar copies for the other regional regions (Barwon South West‎, Gippsland‎, Grampians, Loddon Mallee). -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 01:51, 9 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Localities and LGA's

I have just finished updating all locality based navboxes for Victorian LGA's so that they have a correct list of localities. I have also updated each LGA page with a list of localities and both 2016 and 2021 census data (as was previously done on some of the pages). I hope there aren't any mistakes which which locality is in which LGA.
DID YOU KNOW: There is apparently a total 2,978 localities and 79 LGA's in Victoria (according to Mapshare website). -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 13:05, 24 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Possible award style

If we were to get a Victorian Barnstar award, which of these would you want it to be like?
Star only like WA: or medal like Tas: (or both?)
The circle would be replaced with the Victorian State Badge . This could also be used for WikiProject Melbourne & WikiProject Geelong. -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 07:55, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Something without the British flag or the crown please. HiLo48 (talk) 00:04, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately they are part of the official emblem and flag of Victoria.
  • The WA one is their official state emblem the swan (we have a crown and Southern Cross, NSW - lion on a cross, Qld - crown on a cross, SA - magpie, Tas - lion)
  • The Tasmanian one is their official state flag (and like all 6 of Australia's states includs the Union Jack and state emblem)
I understand that these may cause issues for some people. -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 02:12, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
