Re second - maybe they might take a clue from the WA project - we have tried to keep WA=yes items separate from Perth=yes items -as most of the subjects/articles are one or the other.

Re the first - if Victoria BC ever gets its own project, they can always call it
Greater Victoria
as any article would have to include Saanich, Oak Bay, Sooke etc...
Re the second - my suggestion would be the following schema:
If it relates to the state as a whole, or (state) government, should be in WP Victoria
If it is outside of the region which Melbourne takes responsibility for, should be in WP Victoria
Melbourne has taken responsibility for all areas including and
Melton, and the Cities of Hume and Wyndham
.

There is a more famous Victoria. Hmm, another project idea. The name is likely to lead to confusion. I also think the canadian state and other 'Victorias' scattered around globe would justify a project merely to list them. See also Victoria. Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Assessment templates

Does this project really need to use such a *loud* (and dare I say, ugly) template? An example is at Talk:Melbourne. (diff)? Could it be toned down a little to better match the remainder used? -- Longhair\talk 06:46, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My personal opinion - does it even need one at all? The WA and Tasmanian wikiprojects have been able to get by just fine with the generic Australian one, marking "This is supported by Wikiproject ____" using the tags. A big advantage in doing things this way is updatability - the less things you have to update, the more likely they are to be properly updated. Also shared resources - the WP Australia assessment team is capably and well staffed, whereas WP Vic has a low membership at the present time (although will grow) so is not really in the position to assess its own articles just yet. By the time it is, we'll probably have figured out a way to incorporate that into WP Australia. I did fix what appeared to be a colspan error in the WP VIC box which created the loud look :P Orderinchaos 07:32, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm brainstorming a system where all Australian articles will share the one assessment system, based on the Military history model. Timbarra is actually a place north of Buchan in Victoria with a nice little campground on the Timbarra River. I know that the page mentioned in this section was written about Timbarra estate in Berwick. It should be deleted, not re-directed 8==8 Boneso (talk) 10:58, 27 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Inactive?

This is all true, we created it admittedly more as a classification device anticipating that it had the potential for use as a collaboration tool later on. Ultimately it means we don't have stuff drifting around in Australian Places with noone knowing of its existence :) I think also quite a few people are on wikibreaks or busy offline atm which doesn't help. To be clear, I am all for keeping this project (and establishing projects for SA and Qld as well) for the reasons you state above. School Categories

Just looking to cleanup "Category:Schools in Victoria", so that it can be like many of the other school categories in Australia. Basically i want to delete "Category:Schools in Melbourne" and "Category:Schools in Geelong", so that what is left is state-based categories, such as; "Category:Private schools in Victoria", "Category:Public schools in Victoria" and "Category:High schools in Victoria". Railway line merges

At present was have a whole stack of railway line articles that consist of no more than lists of stations - see

Template:VictorianRailwayLines. In addition, each physical line is divided up into multiple subsections based upon what V/Line services operate on it, and the history of all lines are mashed together at Rail transport in Victoria

I carried out a merge of all railway lines into the relevant regions are used by V/Line - Seymour railway line, Victoria, Ballarat railway line, Victoria, Bendigo railway line, Victoria, Geelong railway line, Victoria, and Gippsland railway line, Victoria, and intended to move the history of each 'main line' and relevant 'branch lines' into one of the five relevant line pages, but it got reverted.

At the present time we just have stubs everywhere of station listings. So what are other people's thoughts? Wongm 09:34, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The merges were complete original research - no one uses these groups according to "physical lines" as you put it. All of these lines are commonly viewed as seperate lines, and are - in effect - seperate lines that branch off a couple of main ones. There's tons of room for expansion of all of these articles - history, technical details, etc - it's been one of my planned projects for ages. There are a number of definitions of the lines. The two we should probably consider here would be:-
  • The V/Line Passenger model of Intercity lines with Interurban branches/continuations. See the key on this V/Line map.
  • The "Railways" model of mainlines and branch lines. See this interactive map at Vicsig.

I'd go with the latter. It's the one we've used for historic railways in the past, and it's also the one that makes most sense to laypeople. Post Offices

A useful online resource is the Premier Postal History list of Victorian Post Offices past and present with opening/closing dates etc.-Whilst designed for philatelists this has been meticulously researched over the years and highly accurate, the primary sources mainly being PO archives. Part has been published in book form. Ive added a few -see

Railway Station Photos

Someone deleted the Ararat Station pages for "improper license". I thought these photos had been freely provided for use on Wikipedia? Can someone please put them back - I can't find the page they came from. Alternatively, is someone able to go to Ararat and take some new photos of the platforms? They're fine in the wake of the last conversation we had with the photographer, although I believe we do still need to clarify the exact free license that they're under. If you find one that has been deleted, please send me the image link (find it in the history) and I'll undelete it and explain the image situation on the talk page. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

Victoria geography stub discussion at

Hi all - this is just to let you know there's a discussion going on at the stub-sorting project about how best to split up Category:Victoria geography stubs into subcategories. To cut a long story short, that category is getting over-full, so regional subcategories are being considered, probably each with individual templates for different counties or districts). There is no evidence that this project has led to any co-ordinated article improvement, and its two participants have been inactive since its creation in August 2010. The second participant's last edit was signing up as a participant. The guy who set it up has not edited since a few day after he set it up last September. It is not "their" article. It is a Wikipedia article about a giovernment agency. Any editor can edit it. Just so long as you and they understand that. Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

Wikimedians to the Games

If there are any sport fans lurking around, Wikimedians to the Games is a collaboration drive to improve Australian Paralympic articles, with the most active contributors having an opportunity to go attend the Paralympic Games and to cover the Games behind the scenes with a press pass. Requested moves of 30+ Melbourne street names

Editors here may be interested in this multiple RM that I have initiated. My preamble:

These articles are all concerned with street names in Melbourne. (I would have include another 17, but the template has a limit of 30.) I do not support these moves; but I know that some very active editors do. It is time to air the matter, once and for all. Is it better to have an article on Collins Street in Melbourne called simply Collins Street, or to have it called Collins Street, Melbourne as at present? Which option serves the needs of Wikipedia's worldwide readership better? In almost all cases that I list there is no content in the destination article, just a redirect. And in almost all cases there is no Wikipedia article that very closely resembles the Melbourne-oriented one. There are, for example, no other Collins Streets with their own articles.

Victorian Honour Roll of Women

I could use some help identifying women from the Victorian Honour Roll of Women. Specifically, there are several inductees from 2001 for which we only have a name. All of them are from Victoria or somehow associated, but I have been unable to determine who they were or why they might have been inducted onto the honour roll. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. "Victorian" as a disambiguator considered harmful

I noticed

John Gray (Victorian politician) when searching for John Gray (Irish politician); the latter's career was in Victorian Britain, so the former's dab is inadequate. I think Forename Surname (Victorian foo) should move to Forename Surname (Victoria foo). It's slightly less idiomatic, but that's a price worth paying considering the purpose of parenthetical dabs is to aid searching. WikiConfererence Australia 2015 - Save the date 3-5 October 2015

Our first Australian conference for Wikipedians/Wikimedians will be held 3-5 October 2015. Organised by Wikimedia Australia, there will be a 2-day conference (Saturday 3 October and Sunday 4 October) with an optional 3rd day (Monday 5 October) for specialist topics (unconference discussions, training sessions, etc). The venue is the State Library of Queensland in Brisbane. So put those dates in your diary! Note: Monday is a public holiday is some states but not others. As part of that page, there are now sections for you to:

  • indicate your interest in possibly attending the conference (this is not a binding commitment, of course)
  • add suggestions for topics to include in the conference: what you would like to hear/discuss (again, there is no commit to you presenting/organising that topic, although it’s great if you are willing to do so), or indicate your enthusiasm for any existing topic on the list by adding a note of support underneath it

New 5000 Challenge for Australia

Hi,

Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge for the UK which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. If you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Australia and Oceania like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1600 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for Australia but fuelled by a contest if desirable to really get articles on every state/territory and subject mass improved. After every 100 articles done for Australia this would feed into the main Oceania one. I will start a 1000 one for your state if there is the support. I would like some support from wikipedians here to get the Challenge off to a start anyway with some articles to make doing a Destubathon for Australia and Oceania worthwhile! Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to

predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia
. The idea is that it takes something like

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on

WP:CITEWATCH
and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

I have started on making region maps for Victoria. I am combining the individually shaded LGA maps. So far there are:

Still to do are: Barwon South West (Barwon / Great South Coast), Gippsland, Grampians (Central Highlands / Wimmera Southern Mallee), Loddon Mallee (Loddon Campaspe / Mallee).

Are there any changes to categories on the left hand side (order, names, add different, remove)? Does it need a region map on the right?
The idea is to compliment how Template:Victoria is used on pages related to Victoria.

Localities and LGA's

I have just finished updating all locality based navboxes for Victorian LGA's so that they have a correct list of localities. I have also updated each LGA page with a list of localities and both 2016 and 2021 census data (as was previously done on some of the pages). I hope there aren't any mistakes which which locality is in which LGA.

Unfortunately they are part of the official emblem and flag of Victoria.
  • The WA one is their official state emblem the swan (we have a crown and Southern Cross, NSW - lion on a cross, Qld - crown on a cross, SA - magpie, Tas - lion)
  • The Tasmanian one is their official state flag (and like all 6 of Australia's states includs the Union Jack and state emblem)

Greetings, Today I removed the stub-tag from this article. The Rater assessment tool suggests (ORES Prediction 94-percent) as Class-B or higher. For now I changed from Stub to C-Class.
