Ada Wong[a] is a character in Resident Evil (Biohazard in Japan), a survival horror video game series created by the Japanese company Capcom. She was introduced as a supporting character in Resident Evil 2 (1998), before becoming a playable character in Resident Evil 4 (2005). Ada is a mysterious spy and mercenary who is often hired by villains, such as Albert Wesker, though she has betrayed her employers for her own agendas, including saving protagonist Leon S. Kennedy from dire situations.

Ada appears in several Resident Evil games, novelizations and films, and is also featured in other game franchises, including Project X Zone, Teppen and Dead by Daylight. English actress Sally Cahill provided Ada's voice for her initial video game appearance. Several actresses have since portrayed the character, including Li Bingbing and Lily Gao in the live-action Resident Evil films.

Video game publications described Ada as among the best Asian female video game characters. She has received both acclaim and criticism with regard to gender representation in video games. Several publications praised her portrayal as a morally ambiguous femme fatale, while others argued she was a product of the male gaze.

Concept and design

Ada Wong is an American woman of Chinese descent.

Umbrella Corporation, the company responsible for a zombie outbreak.[15] Ada's cutscene model was not completed on time for the game's release, making her the only main character to be omitted from the game's cinematics.[16] Ada's appearance was designed by Capcom artist Isao Ohishi.[17]

Ada and the series' main protagonist

Siliconera, Kamiya said he believed expediting the kiss "works out because it makes Ada feel more manipulative of Leon".[18] Ada's revealing, slit, red dress was changed to a beige trench coat and she was given large sunglasses. Co-director Kazunori Kadoi said "wandering around in that dress just getting on with your job as a spy probably doesn't look as realistic and believable as we want in this new game".[19] The tale is continued in Resident Evil 4, as Ada helps Leon multiple times. The "Separate Ways" downloadable content (DLC) also emphasizes how Leon and Ada are similar to one another; they both arrive at the same location with a task, which they are developed to be much more intertwined.[13] For the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4, Ada's costume was redesigned as a red, woolly jumper and leather holster[20] to remove her "shady", sexualized persona.[11] In the "Separate Ways" DLC, she has been developed to use grappling gun skills that she can employ for both fighting and traversing.[21]

In Resident Evil 6, players can unlock Ada after completing three individual character scenarios, which according to executive producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi makes her storyline "more enjoyable" and enhances her ambiguity because "one of the themes of Ada's story is a lone spy working in secret".[22]

Ada was intended to appear in Resident Evil Village as a "mysterious masked person" who saves Ethan Winters from the trial but was cut from the game due to "conflicting scenarios".[23]

English actress Sally Cahill voiced Ada Wong in Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 4, and Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles.[24] Cahill described the character as "a totally hip, modern, kick-ass femme fatale who could handle weapons awesomely".[24] Megan Hollingshead voiced Ada in Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles,[3] while Courtenay Taylor voiced her in Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, Resident Evil 6, and Resident Evil: Damnation.[3][25]

Michelle Lee performed the motion capture for Ada in Resident Evil 6; Lee said the process was "definitely a challenge" and that "the amazing team ... were very specific on how [Ada] moved, her specific characteristics and even how she stood still".[10] Jolene Andersen provided both the voice and motion capture for Ada in the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2,[26] having previously done the motion capture performance for the character in Resident Evil: Damnation.[9] Lily Gao, who played Ada in the reboot film Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City,[2] provided the character's voice and motion capture in Resident Evil 4 (2023),[27] making her the first Asian actor in the series to both voice and portray Ada on-screen.[11]

For the character's non-canonical appearances, Shannon Chan-Kent voiced Ada in Puzzle Fighter,[3] while Vicky Psarakis voiced her in Dead by Daylight.[4] Junko Minagawa voiced the character in Japanese in Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, Resident Evil 6, Project X Zone 2, Teppen, and the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4,[3] while Rie Tanaka voiced her in Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.[8]

Every game in the series is set in the fictional American metropolitan area of Raccoon City until its destruction at the end of

Umbrella Corporation researcher named Linda.[14] Ada made her first appearance in Resident Evil 2 (1998), set two months after the events of the first game, as a corporate spy hired by an unnamed organization to recover a deadly virus from Umbrella's lab in the zombie-infested Raccoon City.[33] Ada aids Leon throughout the game and assists him in destroying the T-103 Tyrant before escaping with a sample of the virus.[34][35]

Ada's next starring role is in Resident Evil 4 (2005), in which she encounters Leon during his mission to rescue the U.S. president's daughter

Jack Krauser, whom Wesker has ordered to kill Leon, but Saddler takes Ada hostage to use her as bait. Leon, however, frees Ada, who helps him destroy the mutated Saddler before escaping with the sample via helicopter.[37] Later ports of Resident Evil 4 include a new scenario starring Ada as a playable character. Titled "Separate Ways", it depicts the events of the main game from her perspective,[38] while the fictional documentary "Ada's Report" describes her involvement with other characters in the story.[39]

Ada appears as an unlockable character in Resident Evil 6 (2012), in which she is a lone spy. Her campaign, which is designed to answer some of the game's mysteries, becomes available after the player finishes the stories of main characters Leon S. Kennedy,

Carla Radames, who is forcibly transformed by Simmons into Ada's doppelganger.[40][41]

Other appearances

Ada Wong features in several of the Resident Evil films. She appears in the live-action film Resident Evil: Retribution (2012), where the Umbrella-controlled Jill Valentine holds her captive; Ada teams up with Alice to fight against Jill and Bad Rain.[42] She did not appear in the final film, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016), apparently dying offscreen.[43] To contrast Claire Redfield's role from Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008), Ada was chosen as the returning heroine in the second computer-animated film Resident Evil: Damnation (2012).[44] Kamiya initially wanted to explore the dysfunctional romance between Leon and Ada but the idea was scrapped.[45] In Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021), Ada appears only in a mid-credit-scene. She was intended to appear earlier but the director found it difficult to fit too many main characters into the story.[46]

Ada is a playable character in several

alternate skin,[53] Knives Out (2017),[54] digital collectible card game Teppen (2019).[55] Puzzles & Survival (2023),[56] and State of Survival (2023).[57]

Ada features in

Sherry Birkin's pendant with the G-virus sample from Umbrella enforcer HUNK. Ada intercepts the delivery of the locket in the village of Loire, France, eliminating HUNK and his men. She survives an accidental T-virus leak, escapes and realizes her feelings for Leon, deciding to quit the espionage business and return to him.[61] Canonically, the characters' story arcs are continued differently; Ada keeps the pendant with the G-virus and resumes her espionage.[62][63] In printed trading card media, she appears as a card in the Bandai-produced game Resident Evil: The Deck Building Game.[64] Merchandise featuring Ada includes action figures, figurines, statues, plushies and t-shirts.[c]

Reception

Ada's original design was changed in the remake of Resident Evil 4 to avoid sexualizing her.[11] The remake's portrayal received criticism, especially for her voice, which led to negative review bombing of the game.[71]

Gaming media outlets have rated Ada among the best Asian female video game characters.[d] Critics have also commented Ada was not oversexualized in her initial appearances and cited her as an example of the series' female characters who are not solely judged by gender.[11][78][79] Ada's relationship with Leon Kennedy has been noted as a memorable video-game romance, and their relationship was described as a hallmark of the "sexpionage" trope.[11] Lara Crigger of The Escapist considered Ada as a "femme fatale" and a "feminist role model" who is "beautiful and sexual" in the mold of Simone de Beauvoir's existentialist philosophies.[79] Harri Chan of Polygon said Ada's ethnicity and portrayal in Resident Evil 4 relegate her to the "Dragon Lady" stereotype, citing her dress and her "sexualized and shady persona".[11] The Guardian staffs praised Ada's intelligence and said she is "numerous steps ahead of everyone else".[74] Mike Wehner of The Escapist said, "Capcom’s manipulation of the Resident Evil timeline hasn’t exactly been kind to this particular theory surrounding Ada Wong’s fate" when Ada returned in Resident Evil 4 following her supposed death in Resident Evil 2. Wehner said Capcom buried Ada’s death in the series lore to the extent "you’re not supposed to acknowledge that it even exists".[33]

Jenny Platz, author of Unraveling Resident Evil: Essays on the Complex Universe of the Games and Films, opined that Ada is genderfluid, and contrasted her with "sexless object" characters such as Resident Evil's Claire Redfield and Rebecca Chambers. Platz cited attributes "typically associated with males" including strength and intelligence while also having "beauty and poise", which she stated are "typically associated with females".[78] Author Andrei Nae of Immersion, Narrative, and Gender Crisis in Survival Horror Video Games said that Ada and fellow character Ashley Graham in Resident Evil 4 "correspond to the submissive woman-femme fatale character couple" while the game attempted to "reinscribe Ada Wong within patriarchy" to "compensate for the male protagonist's incomplete hypermasculinity".[80] As explained by the Female Representation in Video Games article, women have long been included in video games. In this case, they specified Ada's outfit, stating that the physical appearance is where the lack of representativeness is evident, and conduct, is where women are primarily portrayed in a visually stereotypical manner.[81]

The male gaze in video games has been explored in critiques of Ada.[e] Université de Montréal professor of cinema Bernard Perron said Ada's first appearance in Resident Evil 4 features the "traditional male gaze montage" because in-game cinematics focus on her body parts and her slit dress while her identity is not revealed.[83] According to Matt Cundy of GamesRadar+, Ada's outfit is unsuitable for the game's theme, saying a person wearing this outfit would be "certifiably mental".[86] In Tropes vs. Women in Video Games, feminist media critic Anita Sarkeesian criticized Ada's outfit as too revealing.[82]

Lily Gao's voicework as Ada in the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4 attracted strong criticism from fans, resulting in the game being review bombed.[20][87][71] Gao deleted her Instagram posts after suffering online harassment,[88] then later stated: "It is time we stop only capitalizing on the sexualized, eroticized, and mysterious Asian woman and make space to honor every kind of Asian woman. ... Ada is a survivor. She is unpredictable, resilient, and absolutely not a stereotype."[89] Jade King of TheGamer considered Ada to be the worst part of the game, stating: "[Gao's] vocal performance doesn’t nail the self-aware camp everyone else in the cast deals out in spades. She sounds almost bored half the time, her delivery seldom doing justice to her own feminine gravitas or the power she holds over those working with her... Ada is almost in a different world altogether, or doesn’t express a campy irreverence in her femme fatale performance seen in other takes on the character."[20] Chinese audiences criticized Li's performance as Ada in Resident Evil: Retribution,[90] and according to Xiao Mei of People's Daily, Li was not given the opportunity to act and was just "being pretty on screen, just filling in space".[90]
