Burnsville is located at 38°51′31″N 80°39′20″W / 38.858538°N 80.655439°W (38.858538, -80.655439).[7] According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.09 square miles (2.82 km2), of which 1.06 square miles (2.75 km2) is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 km2) is water.[8]

The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.98.
The median age in the town was 41.4 years. 22.5% of residents were under the age of 18; 12.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 20.3% were from 25 to 44; 26.6% were from 45 to 64; and 18% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 48.2% male and 51.8% female.
