Elephantoidea is a taxonomic group that contains the
stegodontids and "tetralophodont gomphotheres", the latter of which are otherwise placed in Gomphotheriidae. An autapomorphic feature of the group is the presence of a checkerboard pattern formed by dentinal tubules.[1]
