- 1937 – The Steel Workers Organizing Committee, precursor to the United Steel Workers of America, made a dramatic breakthrough when it signed a collective bargaining agreement with U.S. Steel.
- 1943 – Second World War: Australian and American air forces attacked and destroyed a large convoy of the Japanese Navy in the Bismarck Sea north of Papua New Guinea.
- 1962 – American basketball player Wilt Chamberlain, then playing for the Philadelphia Warriors, scored 100 points in a game against the New York Knicks, still a record in the National Basketball Association today.
- South Vietnamese air forces began Operation Rolling Thunder, a sustained bombing campaign against North Vietnam that eventually became the most intense air/ground battle waged during the Cold Warperiod.
