Current template

The {{current}} template is not designed for use on articles that are merely affected by recent events. It is only designed for articles on current events of which there are fast-changing details and edits. ViperSnake151  Talk  20:01, 15 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Recent GA reviews and actions

Codyorb, I noticed that you made a series of edits to the Talk:Peter Jalowiczor page that broke the GA nominee template, all while trying to change the status to "on hold", which was odd because you hadn't been involved in the linked GA review and because nothing on the review page itself indicated that the review should be placed on hold (which means that the reviewer is waiting for the issues raised in the review to be done), since at that point the nominator was waiting to hear from the reviewers.

So I took a look, and saw that you'd made these edits right after you finished posting and passing a GA review at

MOS:LEADLENGTH
), which should have been noted and dealt with, and there may be more.

Your review of

MOS:LEAD
. It also says that the satellite will be used to monitor environmental activities along Ghana's coastline, which is odd because the satellite was launched over seven months ago and has a lifetime of eighteen months, so "will be" does not adequately reflect the current status—either it is actually being used for that purpose, or the article is out of date because it doesn't know whether it is or not (and if not when in the next eleven months it will start before it goes out of service), and either way is not ready to be a GA until it reflects current reality. There's also a bit of close paraphrasing that should be dealt with.

It would probably be a good idea to reopen the Cenker and GhanaSat nominations, and check them more closely, especially the latter one. You could ask for a second opinion, given the issues I've noted above, to get a more experienced GA reviewer's view. BlueMoonset (talk) 05:54, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@BlueMoonset: I apologize for not taking a closer look at the articles when reviewing them (and the older failed GA nomination of Robert J. Cenker) for issues in the article that haven't been fixed yet. I'll put the nominations on hold and I'll see what I can do to help the articles before re-reviewing them. Thank you for notifying me about this issue; I will be more careful in my future GA reviews. Codyorb (talk) 04:36, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Codyorb, thanks for letting me know. Once you've reopened the reviews and taken another look, before you conclude the reviews again,

I can get started on it right now. Codyorb (talk) 16:50, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK, so far I've made several revisions to Ghanasat-1. Codyorb (talk) 04:42, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'll take a look this evening if I have time. I'll add some notes with anything I find at the end of your review. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 12:30, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Neither review has been reopened at this point, which would involve reverting the replacement of the GA nominee template with the GA template. It would be odd to post to the review page of a closed and approved review. If you'd like, I'd be happy to do the reversions to reopen the reviews. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:12, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've never done it; are there instructions somewhere on the GAN pages? Yes, please go ahead. Thanks. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 15:16, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'll be happy to do so, but I need Codyorb's go-ahead. Codyorb, is it okay if I reopen the reviews? BlueMoonset (talk) 07:41, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the delay. I have thoroughly re-read and edited
Ghanasat-1 and Robert J. Cenker and they are ready for re-review. Codyorb (talk) 17:46, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply
]

Codyorb, Mike Christie, I have reopened the two reviews and posted a new section to each review explaining what is happening. If you have any questions, please let me know.

However, and it's extremely awkward given the new section posted below, the hours-old GA review at

MOS:LEAD. The same thing is true here as was true for Talk:GhanaSat-1/GA1
: it does not come close to adequately covering the main sections of the article body. I think it, too, needs to be reopened.

Codyorb, I think at this point it would be a very good idea to get a mentor for you GA reviewing; perhaps Mike Christie would be willing to act as your mentor. I would like to request that before you close out any GA review—before you pass it on the article talk page—that you have your mentor check the review first, and only if they agree that the article fully meets the GA criteria do you then wrap up the review. BlueMoonset (talk) 05:25, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be willing to act as mentor, if Codyorb agrees. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 11:44, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@BlueMoonset: I'm currently working on expanding the lead for Kimberly Anyadike. @Mike Christie: I think it would be a good idea to have a second opinion on my future reviews. Codyorb (talk) 16:05, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK -- if you decide to take on any further reviews, just let me know, and I can take a look at the article and your review and give you some help. My main advice, though, is for you to go through the GA process yourself a few times first. I see you've nominated one article; can I suggest you get two or three more in the GA nominations queue? When you have three or four GAs under your belt you'll understand the criteria from the side of the writer, and I think that'll help you become a better reviewer too.
BlueMoonset, are you also planning to re-open the review for Kimberly Anyadike? I think we can take Codyorb's comments above as consent, and I can do the re-review on that too. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 01:29, 15 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, Mike Christie. I'll take care of it now. BlueMoonset (talk) 07:00, 15 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator changes

† Lourdes has requested that her admin rights be temporarily removed, pending her return from travel.

Guideline and policy news

  • The autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) is scheduled to end on 14 March 2018. The results of the research collected can be read on Meta Wiki.
  • Community ban discussions must now stay open for at least 24 hours prior to being closed.
  • A change to the administrator inactivity policy has been proposed. Under the proposal, if an administrator has not used their admin tools for a period of five years and is subsequently desysopped for inactivity, the administrator would have to file a new RfA in order to regain the tools.
  • A change to the banning policy has been proposed which would specify conditions under which a repeat sockmaster may be considered de facto banned, reducing the need to start a community ban discussion for these users.

Technical news

  • CheckUsers are now able to view private data such as IP addresses from the edit filter log, e.g. when the filter prevents a user from creating an account. Previously, this information was unavailable to CheckUsers because access to it could not be logged.
  • The edit filter has a new feature contains_all that edit filter managers may use to check if one or more strings are all contained in another given string.

On 16 March 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Solar eclipse of May 20, 2012, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the solar eclipse of May 20, 2012, began on a Monday and ended on the previous Sunday? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Solar eclipse of May 20, 2012. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Solar eclipse of May 20, 2012), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Administrator changes

Guideline and policy news

  • Administrators who have been desysopped due to inactivity are now required to have performed at least one (logged) administrative action in the past 5 years in order to qualify for a resysop without going through a new RfA.
  • Editors who have been found to have engaged in sockpuppetry on at least two occasions after an initial indefinite block, for whatever reason, are now automatically considered banned by the community without the need to start a ban discussion.
  • The notability guideline for organizations and companies has been substantially rewritten following the closure of this request for comment. Among the changes, the guideline more clearly defines the sourcing requirements needed for organizations and companies to be considered notable.
  • The six-month autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) ended on 14 March 2018. The post-trial research report has been published. A request for comment is now underway to determine whether the restrictions from ACTRIAL should be implemented permanently.

Technical news

Indiggo peer review

I peer reviewed Solar eclipse of May 20, 2012. I have a masters degree in physics and took Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri from C Class to GA, so I'm probably the best qualified editor to review your article. I also considered the fact that it had been submitted for peer review before without any takers and that there are administrator newsletters on your talk page, implying you are an experienced editor.

I have an article waiting for Wikipedia:Peer review/List of unanswered reviews#Indiggo. It is about a band of two identical twins born in Romania, who released an album in high school, studied musical theatre in college, received green cards for extraordinary artistic ability shortly after graduation, became American citizens, are currently performing in an Off-Broadway musical and have just released a cast album.

I think that your article needs to discuss how the eclipse of 5/20/2012 fits into related eclipses. I think some idea of how it ranks among other eclipses for duration and accessibility. (You mention how many people saw it.) Vyeh (talk) 11:25, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the peer review! I'll take a look at Indiggo. Codyorb (talk) 22:15, 29 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I'd be happy to look at Solar eclipse of May 20, 2012 again or answer questions. Vyeh (talk) 04:58, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
As I mentioned in the peer review, I'll be happy to help you further with FAR. I'm afraid Indiggo is very big. As you read it for the first time, consider what could be eliminated while leaving the article comprehensive. Are there any unanswered questions once you finish? Links to relevant policies, guidelines and MOS are very useful. If a section, sentence or structure is confusing, a note about why you find it confusing is what I need. I've already requested a copy-edit from the Guild of Copy Editors. While your article already passed GAR, my article is still listed as stub-class by three wiki-projects. Please keep me in the loop as you pursue FAR. That will help me. I'm very excited to have contributed to your article! Vyeh (talk) 00:11, 8 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've closed the peer review, and thank you for your help! I have little experience in reviewing articles (I've done just 2 GARs by myself), but I'll give it a try and see if there are any suggestions I can give. Codyorb (talk) 21:00, 8 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Codyorb You're welcome. If there is anything else I can do for your article, let me know. Any suggestions you can give are appreciated. The comment about the cites is well-taken. Perhaps the FAR will ask me to support the quotes, but that is easily done. Drown Soda's article Lana Turner started FAR, but it stalled. The reviewers suggested a peer review to generate momentum. I started a peer review a month and a couple of days after she asked for one. Based on your experience, I suspect I just beat the clock. My point is that FAR is onerous. Any observations you make based on your GARs (I have one GAR) is valuable. Thank you for your help. Vyeh (talk) 15:16, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  3. db-blankdraft
    }}.

Technical news

  • Starting on December 13, the Wikimedia Foundation security team implemented new password policy and requirements. Privileged accounts (administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, interface administrators, bots, edit filter managers/helpers, template editors, et al.) must have a password at least 10 characters in length. All accounts must have a password:
  1. At least 8 characters in length
  2. Not in the 100,000 most popular passwords (defined by the Password Blacklist library)
  3. Different from their username
User accounts not meeting these requirements will be prompted to update their password accordingly. More information is available on MediaWiki.org.
  • Blocked administrators may now block the administrator that blocked them. This was done to mitigate the possibility that a compromised administrator account would block all other active administrators, complementing the removal of the ability to unblock oneself outside of self-imposed blocks. A request for comment is currently in progress to determine whether the blocking policy should be updated regarding this change.
  • {{
    RevDel
    checkboxes already filled in.

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • Accounts continue to be compromised on a regular basis. Evidence shows this is entirely due to the accounts having the same password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately.
  • Around 22% of admins have enabled
doing so. Regardless of whether you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure
    and unique to Wikimedia.

2019 US Banknote Contest

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions
