WikiProject Wikify: Current Backlog Reduction Plan

Hey, I noticed you marked yourself as a member of WikiProject Wikify and you are currently listed as active. I was wondering if you would be able to assist with our current backlog reduction plan. While traditional drives are more structured month-long sprints by WikiProject Wikify members, there is currently lacking activity within the project and in order to significantly reduce the incredible backlog, members are encouraged to review all articles marked with the Underlinked Template Message - {{underlinked}} - a list of which can be found here - to analyze the worthiness of the template message on the given article. Articles that have nothing to link or are have had wikilinks sufficiently added should have the template removed to clear the backlog and make it easier for editors to find articles in genuine need of wikification. This can be done by any editor; however, all editors should consider joining if they haven't done so already. Thank you!

Supporting Indian Wikipedia Program resource distribution

In 2017 - 2018, the Wikimedia Foundation and Google working in close coordination with the Centre for Internet and Society (CIS), Wikimedia India chapter (WMIN) and user groups will pilot a program encouraging Wikipedia communities to create locally relevant and high-quality content in Indian languages. This program (Code name: Project Tiger) will:

(a) Support active and experienced Wikipedia editors through the donation of laptops and stipends for internet access and
(b) Sponsor a language-based contest that aims to address existing Wikipedia content gaps.

The objective of the program is to provide laptops and internet stipends for existing editors who need support to contribute more actively. 50 basic model Acer Chromebooks and Internet stipends for 100 contributors are available for distribution. Provided resources are the sole property of the beneficiaries and should be used for the betterment of the movement.

If you're an active Wikimedian, and interested to receive support from this project, please apply. It will take around 10 minutes of your time, and will ask descriptive questions about your contribution to Indic Wikimedia projects.

Articles underrepresented and overrepresended at vital articles (level3, level4 level5)

Hi, I have noticed that some fields at level 3-5 are seriously underrepresended o overrepresented (there is a lot of it... but I will show only the most obvious examples in my)

  1. Currently we have clearly underrepresented fcecbook topics at vital articles pages.
Facebook Messenger), and is omnissed at the level5 (If we have on the level 5 topics such like Snapchat or Britney Spears, facebook stories also is qualifing to include based on consensus here. It is also quite schockingly that Mark Zuckerberg is at the level 5 and Louis Armstrong
is at the level 3 (two levels difference?)
  2. Currently we have littly too many compossers at the level 3 and littly to few writers at the level 3. Louis Armstrong do not deverse for better level than Queen band and Igor Stavinsky probably do not deverse for better evel than Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. At this level we also do not have vital writers such like: Victor Hugo, Geoffrey Chaucer, Hans Christian Anderssen
  3. Even if we have a lot of underrepresented topics at VA list, clearly the most underrepresented field at VA is: "philosophy and religion". It is no way that: Saint Nicholas is at the level 5is not at the level 3 but Santa Claus (also popularised by The Coca-Cola Company which is currently at the level 5) is at the level 4. It is no way that: Baba Yaga is at the level 4 but Bogeyman is not listed even at the level 5, it is no way that: Ares (generally every common/average person heard about Ares) currently is winning nomination to removing article from level 4 to the level 5 but Senet (most common people who are not interested in board game really do not know what is senet) is represented over nine mench at the level 4 (it seems to me that Ares is more vital than Senet because of 'notoriety for common people also is reflection of vitality, Cristiano Ronaldo clearly have fewer team achivements than Toni Kroos but Cristiano is more vital just due to notoriety and it is not confusing noterry for vitality). Based on fact that religious figures such like Jesus or Moses are staying at the level 3 it seems to me that too many fewer vital people than Jesus has been mistakly omnissed at the level 3 (maybe users some time age were not couraged to add more religious figures which are not vital like moses and jesus but vital at the level 3). For example Pope John Paul II is one of the most famous not-Italian popes and he is great in Poland (very honestly) at the same level what Nicolaus Copernicus who is at the level 3 (why John Paul can not be at the level 3 if we have two Polish sciencefists?). What do you think about my points? Cheers Dawid2009 (talk) 22:24, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Honestly I was not only going to share my thoughts about several points but I am also generally going to talk about vital article project. What we could do to this project better work. You belive Zuckerberg can be fewer vital for next 10 years (read Facebook loss his fame) and there are also people in our project who belive that Arnold Schwarzenegeer will be much more vital for next 10 years (read Schwarceenegeer will be icon of fitness culture). I belive that it make no sense when we try declass Zuckerbeg based on such opinions or overrate Schwarzenegger based on such opinions. Our mission regarding the "Vital Articles" project is as quoted "Vital articles are lists of subjects for which Wikipedia should have corresponding high-quality articles. We should try faster correctedd artile about Mark Zuckerberg than he will be fewer vital. Anyway currently fact that more and more people are going from facebook to instagram is irrelevant to evidence that Facebook will be fewer vital because of Instagram clearly is part of facebook (vital and popular just thank to faebook and Mark Zuckerberg) and it only show fact how much vital is Zuckerberg. I also do not see issue to Facebook Messenger be at the level 5 and Facebook stories at the level 5 too for two things: 1. At the level we have articles which are important among various 50 000 articles in enwiki (read facebook stories) articles important amog 20 000 articles in ENwiki (read facebook messenger) 2. We have accepted figures such like Britney Spears who are not important in history yet I would remove some of the directors first. - Generally in my opinion Bill Gates should be at the level 3 such like Henry Ford (although we have some companies too low such like the coca-cola company at the level 5). I agree that we have too many filmmakers but we should moved Auguste and Louis Lumière from level 5 to the level 4 and add them on the same level what some directors from level 3 to level4. Your last point is specific to football - I do not know what you understand in my wording but I did not tell that Kroos is more vital than cristiano. I told why we also could sometimes confused noterity for vitality. For example we unquestionably should not try explain that George Best is not vital at the level 5 because of he played short time in premier league and he never played at world cup but we unquestionably should try explain he is vital thank to popularity his popularity, reputacion despite not great career. Also not "vital" articles which are popular topics (such like Loch Ness Monster or Mehran Karimi Nasseri) and have partent topics at the level 4 could be described at the level 5. Why we can not describe Nasseri if we have Authentication and even Passport at the level 4? Currently he is not listed but on that basics I could suggest that some of tiopics which do not have priorited in academic books could be accepted at vital articles (but not necesarilly all if we will do not have 15 000 people). Dawid2009 (talk) 21:36, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thoroughfares at the level 5 ?

When I have been check page at d:Wikidata:Statistics/Wikipedia I have noticed that a lot of Wikipedias has articles about Thoroughfares. If we have a lot of cities at the level 5 (and maybe some sections overrepresented), what do you think about adding throughfares? In online ecyclopedia throughfares are valuable to describe. Currently we have geography underrepresented (for example mountains at physical geography) but I think that maybe it would be possible and reasonable goal? BTW outside philosophy and religion, second field which maybe is underrepresented is: technology. Currently we have hackers at the level 5 although we do not have hacking. Also user Wikid77 suggested here change the limit probably due to this reason. Cheers. Dawid2009 (talk) 21:11, 8 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

question

Hi Gizza, I have question to you related with vital article project. Do you can see here and here ? What do you think about listing history of regions and regions in this way:

  • Level 2: South America and North America
  • Level 3: (South America), (North America), History of the Americas (instead listing "History of North America" and "History of South America"), History of the Latin America, *History of the United States, Pre-columbian era
  • Level 4: Latin America, Mesoamerica, Americas
  • Level 5: Western World

What do you think? Dawid2009 (talk) 20:45, 29 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

BTW I have noticed that some time ago nomination to add Morality to the level 3 has been failed due to much overlap with ethics (despite fact ethics was level 2 article at the oment). Could you tell me how works overlap contigent at vital article list? Why it is only considered at the level 2 and 3 (even if we have difference in levels) but not on level 4 (even if we have two at the same level)? Dawid2009 (talk) 13:16, 1 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I had the weirdest situation recently (last year, probably) when someone accused me of possible bias. The user correctly deduced that "hb" stood for my hometown, but had somehow concluded, based on my discussion on Talk:Janet Nguyen, a line on my userpage about disliking "Lists of Jews" (which was a very old copypasta/meme), and "88" in my username, that I could have bias. I assured the user that "88" was my birth year, and is an extremely old handle that dates back to my first email address. 1988 was also the Year of the Dragon, hence "dragon" in the username. But I had also never even directly edited Janet Nguyen (only on the talk page), and the article was in bad shape in 2008, as a lot of stuff was/is. hbdragon88 (talk) 04:36, 10 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Editor Dispute

Good afternoon,

I have had my references deleted and replaced with incomplete links by an editor who has personalized this process in a way that I find quite troubling. There was another editor who chimed in and neither of them have disclosed their conflict of interest, provided a specific issue with the content or accuracy of the content being reference. They have also refused to find a workable solution.

The dispute guidelines said to reach out to an active admin to help resolve these types of issues. I'm very concerned about the lack of transparency and independence from both editors.

Please let me know if there is something that can be done.

Thank you

What is the issue with referencing an accurate, unaltered publication of the source document (especially when it exists on a reference page)? You have not addressed the issue with the source and you have not answered what your affiliation is with the page. Asetra (talk) 21:53, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

You can cite the original document, provided it otherwise meets the sourcing requirements. You cannot add a link to your web page. MrOllie (talk) 21:55, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

MrOllie's "affilation with the page" is as a long-time editor who, in this case, is ensuring that new editors such as yourself don't add inappropriate links, promotional or otherwise, to the encyclopedia. So now that it has been explained to you that you cannot link to your website, how are you going to edit productively?-- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 21:57, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

Secondly, your repeated accusations are offensive especially when you've already acknowledged that it has no impact on search results. Once again, if you cannot challenge the accuracy of the source material or that the linked information is not accurately produced, then what is the issue with "providing information" that speaks directly to the section where the citation was inserted. Asetra (talk) 22:05, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

I am adding reference materials to several pages and happy that we are addressing these issues upfront. My goal is and has been that people have a right to access accurate information. If the issue is the page design, then I'm happy to fix that. It does not make sense that you can cite the document, but cannot provide a link to view the document in it's entirety. Asetra (talk) 22:00, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

You have been provided a link to the relevant guideline, which we all have to follow. I'm not going to debate it with you here. If you have questions about it, feel free to ask at WP:TEAHOUSE. If you continue to ignore it and link to inappropriate sites, you can expect that your edits will be reverted and your account will be blocked. MrOllie (talk) 22:13, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

You seem to be disinterested in resolving this in good faith (which is required) and have yet to raise an actual issue with the reference being provided or its accuracy. I just want to clarify what your issue is. Is the issue that the citation to the full state by state table is reproduced (without alteration) on a reference page hosted on a website that you don't like? There are additional entries to the table which are going to be added to the page for each state, but I'm holding off on adding everything else because it appears that you have unilaterally decided (in addition to making some accusations) that people should not be able to link directly to source material (whether accurate or not). Please clarify so we can attempt to resolve this in good faith. Asetra (talk) 22:24, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

Editors are not required to explain our policies and guidelines to you until you're satisfied with the answers being provided. You are adding a self-published source from your law firm. You cannot do that. If that is your only purpose in editing, then the account will be blocked. I don't expect that MrOllie will be replying further as you seem intent on not hearing what is being said. They've provided a link to WP:TEAHOUSE if you're interested, but the volunteers there will just reiterate what has been said on this page. -- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 22:33, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

My sole purpose is to provide people access to information. As I've explained, several times, it is a link to a 100% accurate reproduction of a public document which is correctly cited and hosted on a reference page so people can view the source material in its entirety. The full table is in the body of the reference page.

Secondly, I didn't ask for an explanation of the policies. I asked for an explanation of the decision (and subsequent threats) so any issue can be remedied. We are encouraged to resolve issues in good faith which you and the other editor appear unwilling to do.

In addition, my edits were not even completed before it was blocked. There is still more information modify, within that page, specifically the table which should provide different state requirements for different automobile insurance types (UM, liability, PIP, etc) and links to the specific state statutes which mandate their purchase (preferably internal wikipedia links and government links), but I was shut down before I could even finish that.

I intend to edit and provide more information on several pages and would like to get these issues resolved before I continue to have my references and edits blocked by editors who have yet to raise an issue regarding the content of the reference or the accuracy of the content being linked.

Are you saying that you will not provide that information either?

My intention is not to argue with you. It is simply to establish the basis for your position and your threats to block contributors who provide information which you take issue with.

As you are aware, you are required to disclose any COI or affiliation with the content page. Please provide that information. I want to ensure that all cards are on the table before proceeding with the formal dispute process.

Hi, dear DaGizza, i'm sorry, but it is in fact artfacts.net and not artefacts.net - perhaps you mean another page than the one i intended? I thus reverse your change, okay? Kind regards, --Naomi Hennig (talk) 11:45, 8 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Naomi Hennig: Yes I just checked again and it was a mistake. I shouldn't have changed the spelling. Gizza (talkvoy) 13:37, 8 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No problem :-). Thanks for your work here! Kind regards, --Naomi Hennig (talk) 13:57, 8 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

  • Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
  • Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
  • Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
  • Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
  • Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
  • Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
  • Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
  • Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
  • Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
  • Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
  • Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
  • Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
  • Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
  • Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
  • Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
  • Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
  • Proposal 28, initiated by HouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.

To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:

Request for review

Hi, I'm approaching you as a random uninvolved administrator.

I posted a request for administrative review of a conduct dispute here, which was not answered and has been archived.

If you could respond or advise me how to proceed I'd appreciate it, thank you. IOHANNVSVERVS (talk) 18:11, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
