Thank you for your kind words. I have been uploading a lot of photos these last few weeks, as not many decent photo series of fossils have been contributed so far. To be able to make a wikipedia article seems to be sheer luck though. Almost never is the literature available for free, and to pay 30 USD or so to Elsevier to get a species description is too much to ask of a goodwilling hobbyist like me. But if I can, I will make other pages. In fact, I did make another page that you may wish to have a look at my article on Musculus_somaliensis. Thanks Dwergenpaartje for the well-thought-out reply which you left on my talk page. I suppose that the main reason to join any Project on Wikipedia is to be able to work alongside of other people who are interested in contributing to the same subject areas as you are. It can be inspiring to see what others are doing. Plus I guess you would be able to give input into how the coverage of this subject area is managed in the encyclopedia as a whole. And then there's the whole team spirit thing, which some people enjoy.

To address your more specific questions, I do understand your ambivalence. I hope you don't mind, but I am copying your letter onto the Bivalve Project talk page so that others can think about the issues you raised and give some input.

Hi Dwergenpaartje! I too was educated as a biologist, although I now work in another career entirely. I really liked your article and think that you have a lot to contribute if you choose to do so. The whole idea for WikiProject Bivalves came up in early January this year, precisely because some of the editors in WikiProject Gastropods were having a discussion about mollusks. I am a new editor on Wikipedia, and although I am not a "joiner" of clubs or groups I decided to "give it a go" here. I agree with Invertzoo's comment that it can give you kind of a sense of community. I find it nice to have like minded people to discuss these topics with. My wife, kids, and most all of my friends, really have no interest in mollusks - and I often feel that I am boring them when I bring up the subject. Wikipedia and its project groups provide a place where we can revel in our interests and share them with others who have similar interests. Go read some of the discussions on the project pages. There are quite a few editors out there who are willing to mentor and help if you want or need it. I have come a long way in just four months, thanks to the interest and help from three or four more senior (in time) Wikipedia editors. I hope you continue to enjoy it. I see you are starting to create articles for the images you are uploading to commons. I would note that the most specific article that generally should be created for extinct taxa are genus level articles. This is per the WikiProject Paleontology guidelines for extinct taxa which note the fluidity of species designations in fossil taxa and the usually very small details on which separate species are erected, which results in species articles which large amount of duplication between related taxa and the genus they belong to.--Kevmin § 21:43, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

I understand the consideration behind the guidelines, and would be glad to comply, but the literature to make informative articles is seldomly freely available. Sometimes I stumble upon free access literature on a species and then I use it. It is often not possible to make articles on genera because I do not have all species in my collection or described in the literature. You may note the articles I developed from the most lean type of stub to something worth reading (or so I hope). To show you I try to do what the rule says, you may want to look at the articles on Ductina (2 species) and Morocconites (monotypical). I am slowly working my way through Phacops s.l. but I still need a lot more specific information. So when I can, I will try to create genus level articles. I hope you can live with this. I am a visual person and like to "see" things that I am working on. Taxonomy is one of those things I like to try to visualize. If you think of the Bivalvia taxonomy as a tree and the species articles on it as terminal branches then it is easy to visualize what Kevmin is saying about having a "stub" genus article to hang the species article on. The Bivalvia coverage on Wikipedia was sorely in need of help and a small group of us "like minded" biologists/shell people decided to dig in and try to make it better. I did some research on higher level taxonomy and did what I could to update the major articles for higher taxa, and Kevmin and a number of other editors have been busy fixing up genera and species articles. Whatever information and knowledge base you have and are willing to add to Wikipedia will help flesh out this area. Bivalves (extant and extinct species) just do not seem to attract as much interest as Gastropods, and therefore are often neglected. Shellnut (talk) 00:16, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Hello Wikhead, and thank you for the lightning speed answer. No, it is not a numbered list I try to achieve. A key consists of numbered pairs of contrasting statements that lead to the identification of a taxon or to a following pair of constrasting statements. I would like it to look like this.

1 animal with scales (at least on the feet) → 2

- animal without scales → mammal

2 animal with feathers → bird

- animal without feathers → reptile

I can do it in this example by using spaces, but if I need more lines it becomes very messy.

Perhaps a <br> line-break tag at the end of the line might help... something like this:

1 animal with scales (at least on the feet) → 2

Thanks. It may help a bit, but not fundamentally. What I really want is the text to line out on the left, while still having a number or hyphen further to the left on the hight of the top line of the text. If a borderless table would work, I might suggest taking a look at Help:Table to assist with further planning. I might also suggest trying to find one of these keys in a similar article to see how it's done elsewhere. It's quite possible that a template might exist that makes this an easy task. From what I've seen of Pseudonaraoia convinces me that it's a legitimate fossil (given as how it's reported in both the Czech Republic and Chengjiang), so I think we should mention it in Naraoiidae. Hi Tobias, Thanks for the compliment. Your topic however is much more difficult than mine, and I have to complement you on the GBSP article. I constantly run into inconsistencies in the stratigraphy and the ages given when I am working on trilobite articles, and I think it would be very helpful to get some guidance on corresponding strata and one age for each. You may wish to look at the article on Trilobite zones, that I have extended, but I guess most of the article would benefit from some attention by a specialist like you.

Two different phenotypes: seed color and seed form, for example. Dimorphism: either green seeds or yellow ones (or smooth or wrinkled seed). polymorphism is used if more than two morphs exist. So your definition is still not correct: in any population, hundreds of different phenotypes exist (body weight, body length, hair color, etc etc)... Thanks. I think either of us may be mixing up things. The first sentence of the phenotype article starts A phenotype (from Greek phainein, 'to show' + typos, 'type') is the composite of an organism's observable characteristics or traits, such as its morphology, .... In your explanation above, you seem to suggest that di- or polymorphic can only be used specifically for one characteristic (implying it has two or more distict states).

I actually do not want to enter into a discussion on definitions. The reason I made the edit lies in the work I'm doing with the article on

I wanted to create links for scientific terms, and polymorph redirected to phenotype. The sentence I inserted the second time around, is in fact identical to the first sentence in the polymorphism article, so I think it was reasonable to assume it would be correct. Yes, B. dailyi is the only species in this genus. Alternatively, I would like to quote a respons by User:Kevmin (see higher up my talk page), who commented on a species level article I had created: "I see you are starting to create articles for the images you are uploading to commons. I would note that the most specific article that generally should be created for extinct taxa are genus level articles. This is per the WikiProject Paleontology guidelines for extinct taxa which note the fluidity of species designations in fossil taxa and the usually very small details on which separate species are erected, which results in species articles which large amount of duplication between related taxa and the genus they belong to".
