In a sandbox, I tried to create an image for use in a grid found on 'Confederate States of America'.

Other states are included, not Virgina's (and some others). When you click on the image of the flags picured in the grid, it links you to a Wiki Commons site. Virginia's is at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Virginia.svg . There, it is said the image is in the public domain because the image was registered with the USG before 1923.

have have gone through maybe four Wikipedia tutorials and guides. one online said that using a wiki commons source, one could put it on the desktop and upload it from there. I have not been able to upload an image from wiki commons, but the framed box has been generated and a hot link, not the image...

I have no idea how I may have created a stand alone flag off in the internet ether...I thought the flag would be in the image box I created in the sandbox...but it's not there...(She's not there, The Zombies, 1964) TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 17:25, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello,

The image (File:Amilcardesousa.jpg) is from the extinct monthly magazine “O Vegetariano”, published in 1911 in Portugal. Theres is not a single notice of copyright in the whole magazine. The author is unknown. The image is copyright free. Leonidas Metello (talk) 14:08, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

I felt it would be easier for people not very (or perhaps completely un-) familiar with what bullets look like. Being mildly dyslexic, its easy to make a mistake trying to match a caption to an item in a pic.

As for the license: I took the picture from an existing one that already existed on the page for and is found here:

. The photo was taken by an editor and given to wikipedia under the GNU license. I couldn't find a choice in the drop-down list of licenses that matched it and, as I wrote, I really got quite confused trying to place my captioned image on the article in question (Gauge). I had intended to add the tags the creator used but I could find no way to edit the page in order to add them once I'd uploaded the file.

Also, thanks for pointing me toward the place to get help. I've been an editor for 5+ years now but I've done very little with photographs/video etc.

Hi - you left me a note to say I don't seem to have said "where the image came from or who created it".

I have tried to add this information already and I think it is on the file - but the placing might be wrong. The wizard for uploading did not seem to allow me to choose the right things which was Book/Journal cover - Public Domain.

I have added a note "it was produced in 1818 which means it is now in the public domain"

Yabbut logo_fur has reasonable default values for those fields. I don't think the bot should rely on there being text in them. I'm still not clear on whether pd-textlogo is supposed to be accompanied by information (which would always have those populated) or by logo_fur (which wouldn't always). In one case the image code had been deleted from the article by a vandal, the image was tagged and deleted and then was unavailable for the article. Possible mitigating steps:

1. leave a message for the uploader
2. Leave a different tag on the image page - specifiying the article(s) needing checking.

Unicode is fine. It's the fact that Unicode-aware programs tend to assume that every other program in the world doesn't understand it that's causing the problems I'm having. How do I keep the ImageTaggingBot from trashing work?

I created the following images, and I included the correct copyright information, but the ImageTaggingBot trashed the links.

• File:Pulse-doppler ambiguity zones.png
• File:Pulse doppler signal processing.png ‎
• File:Waveguide.png

I don't want to put the images back because I will just be fighting with a piece of software.

What has to be done to stop software from automatically trashing things?

This bot left a message for me about File:Have Blue.jpg not having a license.

Non free, fair use images won't have licenses, they have non-free, fair use rationale. Perhaps the bot should check for this before leaving messages.

Also, I suggest the bot also leaves messages for previous uploaders of the same file. I did some clean-up work to the image and have no idea where it came from. The original uploader is far more likely to.

Hi, I received your notification about the image use policy. The Hu Ge and Liu Shi Shi pictures are originally owned by Netease, who have uploaded it onto Baidu Images (just like a Chinese version of Google Images)under a free license, in which anyone can take the pictures, but cannot edit and reupload it without stating the original author (Netease). So, if I note that the pictures came from Netease originally, the pictures are still useable?

As for the CES pictures, the one with the Chinese Entertainment Shanghai next to it was screen clipped by myself from it's official website CEIHK. The picture of just a white dragon on a purple background was one of several screen clippings I found on Baidu Photos, and there weren't any watermarks stating where it came from. I could state that I just took it from Baidu Images, which is exactly the same as stating it is from Google Images (the original author/site is not shown). Is there an alternative method to show that this is under a free license?

If an image on Commons is uploaded locally, deleted locally, and an image-less description page is created, all in too short a timespan, it'll look to the bot like a local upload, and it processes the page as such. I can't imagine what you are referring to. As I said this file was uploaded by mistake as the same photo was already on Wikipedia and so I requested this second copy image to be deleted. I am not even sure I am typing in the right place. Forgive me if this is wrong. I am assuming you are a "bot" and recently learned this is a non-human entity and I therefore will not be as fearful of offending you.

I uploaded three images and placed them in a Wikipedia article. To obtain permission to use the images I did the appropriate amount of tap-dancing and butt-kissing, and they were given to me to use... and thought I provided that information with the uploadings. When I return from a mind-crushing amount of Christmas frivolity, I will attempt to figure out how to "tag" what I uploaded in the manner required. What the powers-that-be at Wikipedia don't appear to understand is that IF they want "old people" who actually know how to write and to use correct grammar and who can actually read cursive and accomplish other old-timey things, it will take a while for us to understand the lingo of this modern Huxley-esque world we are living in. Getting those images to upload and appear in the article seemed like magic to me, and now I've learned something about that is wrong, and that's a bit unsettling.

The pictures are each more than 100 years old and everyone is dead. Harvard U. said I could use them as long as I said they came from their archives. The article looks nicer with some human faces on it, and it would be a shame if the pictures can't stay there.

I am back again after attempting to see what it is I am supposed to do. After reading through a bunch of stuff, my brains are coming out my ears and I just don't know. The images in question are all old and were contained within the Harvard Archives. Harvard emailed me the images at my request and said it was okay to use them as long as the three were credited thusly: Harvard University Archives, HUPSF The Monthly (1); Harvard University Archives, HUPSF The Monthly (2);Harvard University Archives, HUPSF The Monthly (3). I put that information in the uploadings, but apparently didn't say enough. I am certain I will put that information in the wrong place again, as I don't see an option that fits. There was no category: "image is free to use with attribution" and then a place for the attribution. What am I missing?

Could you add a template like Template:Welcome-t to the message for new pages, that way users have an opportunity to learn about the community other than just our copyright policies (which are dull). What is so important about adding the copyright-law stuff onto an image? Even if it is important to add it, I don't know how to add it and I fear that adding it will result in the article glitching out, 'cause I tried adding an image before and it didn't appear. 1. edited the infobox to add the image as Enemy MineIASFM.jpg (no space)
2. previewed the page
3. opened an upload wizard in a new tab
4. uploaded the image as File:Enemy Mine IASFM.jpg (with space)
5. previewed the page, and seen that the image didn't display
6. changed the infobox to match the filename I actually uploaded the image under (with space)
7. saved the page

bsd This bot tagged a logo i uploaded (File:ASAP (variety show) logo.png), because it doesn't have a source. The vast majority of logos are sourced at the owner's website. Besides, it doesn't really matter the source when logos are concerned. The owner is ultimately the source. The result of using the upload wizard actually does indicate "the license status of the image". There is no indication in that wizard that I am obliged to use an image copyright tag, nor am I aware of any policy that requires them. Thank you for alerting me to the above orphaned file. Actually, it was uploaded by mistake, and technically, I wasn't permitted to take it down. Wish there were an easy way of deleting a file just uploaded. There are many reasons one might want to delete a newly uploaded file-wrong image, changed mind, etc. Thank you so much!
