Interesting! The reference to the serpent must be simply the symbol that Cranach used as his signature. What Cranach felt the serpent symbolized is not clear.
I just saw the change you made to the caption. I don't see the serpent signature, do you? Do you think it's somehow incorporated into the lines of the figures, or do you think it got cut off when the photo was taken?
Just checked the original Christie's page- I didn't realise it at the time, but there was another level of zoom (I pasted together several screen grabs to make the image). This shows clearly a serpentine line underneath the year, with a crown or starburst above it. Guess I'm going to have to paste together a larger image! A friend years ago devised a psychological test, in which the word "xanthomelanous" was used (black hair, yellow skin). . My father used to do the Times crossword (which I find impossible). One day he was stuck on a clue- the answer was of course "xanthomelanous". The only answer I ever got! Xanth, I hope you don't mind that I did some re-wording in the article. I have a question. In the middle of the second paragraph is the following sentence:

Then, in the second-to-last paragraph is the following sentence:
He adds that Goller’s palette is limited to a few dull colours and that an analysis of the the chemical composition of the pigments in these paintings, such as white lead, shows that the pigments used are typical of the 16th century.
It seems to me that the second half of this sentence and the entire first sentence contradict each other (regarding pigments and what they say about the genuineness of the painting or paintings). Am I reading this wrong, or is some clarification or change needed?
Sorry, just sat through a two-hour film in a crowded cinema thinking "I wish the b… actors would get out of the way of the scenery". Kevin Kline is now banned from my talk page. Anyway, what it should mean is that the pigments used are the same chemicals as would have been used in the 16th century, however the trace impurity of silver that should be in the lead is missing. Silver is commonly found associated with lead in lead ore- modern methods of extraction remove the silver, hence lead white without silver is modern. With regards to the chalk (this is presumably used in the priming of the painting) the chalk is too finely milled to be authentic. I'll reword it in a bit- was just in the process of doing it when I realised I'd conflated the chemical analysis of the pigments with Hofbauer's statement. The analysis, revealing the traces of silver etc. is of the Justitia fake; Hofbauer made his comment about the pigments in relation to the 60 plus paintings he has suspicions about. However I'm unsure as to whether Hofbauer is extrapolating from the Justitia ananlysis or is referring to subsequent analyses on other paintings. The Bendor Grosvenor blog has a bit more on the Charles V painting (on the left in the article)- the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece across his chest should be gold, not red, and the badge of the Order is missing. The problem is to "authenticate" that as a Goller; I suspect the chain of agents between auction house and painter is probably very murky. Great work, as always. You and Hafspajen did almost everything; this week I was mainly editor, layout, and image selection and captions, and thanks for that: Meant I could deal with mourning my dead pet without responsibilities getting to me too badly. (She died a couple months ago, but it was in the middle of that holiday to America, and I hadn't mourned yet...)
Let's see. Quick summary of the more major changes:
Added a "citation needed" running gag; we seemed to enjoy jokingly adding false information this week, this should keep there from being any complaints. I didn't use it for the joke about the yet-to-be-created "SF Art" fancast, since I changed "Uranus" to "moons of Uranus", as they're more habitable, and then apparently turned five years old.
Tried to focus the cathedral entries a bit, so that they're a bit more relevant to the pictures. They got a little diffuse, so I reigned them in a bit. Not that the material was bad, but better to focus on things in the pictures, so we don't distract from them.
Expanded "List of tributaries of Catawissa Creek" and "The Magpie" - I think the first is a very impressive list, when you realize the author also wrote very well-sourced articles on literally every entry in it, and the second could have stood where it was, but had a request for more, and who am I to object to a lovely image?
On Michelle Obama: While it's great we have an African-American First Lady, I cut "which we all applaud", as First Lady is a position got through marriage. The explanation of why it's significant is in the next sentence. I think we can make the case that she'd be notable, albeit less noticeable, without Barack, so added a list of a few more of her achievements instead.
I found "Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes" a little hard to understand (I hadn't heard of them or anything like them before, so I kept thinking "Wait, what mine?", etc.), so I rewrote the first half as if explaining to myself of 15 minutes before
Rest is just copyediting, I think. Anyway, I'm coming to this a little late this week, so wanted to give you a summary, so you can object to my meddling ways, if needed, and know where to look. I don't know- I've got half an idea, but… That's a Tudor period building, and their architecture can be quite flamboyant, like their costumes. During the period 95% of English religious art and sculpture was destroyed (according to
Andrew Graham Dixon, and the link between a sculpture or icon and a metaphysical thing was deliberately broken. So maybe you could put a dragon on your roof without someone thinking that it actually was a manifestation of an evil being (like the change in the views on transubstationation in the Mass- at the start of the period you could be burnt for denying that the bread and wine actually changed into Christ's body, then later you'd be burnt for asserting that it did. The turdlike one looks like it's meant to represent the whorls on a brain. Somewhere in the last few days (and I can't remember where, but I think it was in a programme about Holbein by Waldemar Janusczak) it was mentioned that a portrait of Henry VIII was copied so many times that there were as many copies per head of population as there are police in England and Wales (which would work out at around 4,000 copies for a population of 2 million). Pup Art: Pets Throughout Art HistoryFor who knows how long, dogs have been referred to as man’s best friend and though this certainly holds true, I would say the same applies to other furry creatures as well, such as cats, rabbits, guinea pigs etc. I began thinking about our four legged as well as winged friends after returning from a trip home when my boisterous and mischevious black cat, Loki (he lives up to his name), greeted me with loud meows accompanied by frenzied purring, it seemed he missed me while I was gone, or maybe he was just hungry…but either way I knew I had missed him, antics and all. For those who have a pet or have ever owned a pet, whatever species or breed they may be, know what it is like to have a constant companion who always greets you, in a way, with a “smile.” About 10,000 years ago dogs became one of the first domesticated animals and by 3500 B.C. cats became a household pet in Egypt. Undoubtedly the longest lasting trend, that won’t be ending anytime soon; pets have not only become ingrained into our cultural history, but have been immortalized by the artist as well. When one first thinks of dog paintings, something similar to the amusingly kitsch painting from the film Goodfellas may come to mind, but contrary to this perception some of the most avant-garde artists such as Picasso have chosen to depict their canine counterparts.

I wrote up Iakovos Rizos after massive amounts of research, in the course of which I discovered Albert de Belleroche, who seems to merit an article, even without his having been the subject of innumerable portraits by John Singer Sargent, with at least one blog post suggesting there was a bromance involved. He was also pals with Lautrec and preferred to ignore the fact he was the son of a marquis. The thing of it is, I learnt of him because he supposedly painted a portrait of "Jacques Rizo" that was well received at the salon, but not only can I not find that online, we don't appear to have a single thing by him on Commons. He died in 1944 so by lifetime plus 70 years, pictures of his paintings and lithographs should be out of copyright now, except for any first published after 1923, and he created relatively little after leaving Paris pre-First World War. So; are you familiar with this chap and do you think I should go ahead and write him up and kype some pictures of his femmes décoiffées and studies of shirtless brooding men, or am I up a gum tree? Well, sorry you got blocked on the Swedish Wiki. Was trying to talk to them, and tell them you are my friend who only wanted to follow the IP users's bright idea of a Je Suis Hafspajen - moment or movement on a Swedish Wiki- and hope they unblock you. I guess my temperament is not fitting in there. I am to much of a freedom-lover and much of a non-conformist - to enjoy a much to strict atmosphere. Here nobody cares a bit how we use our talks and fun it is, too - as we many times already stated it... it is an atmosphere of creative chaos that is beneficial to the project, it is fun, humour that is doing no harm, they give a personal touch, and some like EEng, Many of us happen to find H's efforts uplifting, amusing, and inspiring. (And in the best traditions of open content, I've shamelessly stolen it). Crazy EEng... If it makes people amused, is no harm in it and it is a creative fun ... and at least 30 articles were created through this kind of fun, if not more, people picking up an idea, an other coming up with an other one, many of those articles went to DYK, at least five resulted in articles that later had Featured pictures from those article, lately it was the Ploughing in the Nivernais - both a DYK and a FP: so it is surely, in fact, beneficial to Wikipedia. It is not about being temperamental and dramatic - as some judged me - it is simply ... not liking to follow rules that there is little point in it. Why didn't they show some more tolerance here? It doesn't cost them anything. Using pictures on a talk-page didn't hurt anyone. Placing a red link on a talk-page didn't hurt anyone. When we have so much fun here with our freedom of doing what we want on talk-pages .... it would feel like going in a desert with no water - to conform to the no-picture, no-fun - policy. I have no plans to have a digital meltdown or create a hate page about others to make a point about how upset I am, over one of my comments being perceived as sexist. (I am not upset at all) and am frankly speaking glad that another editor was able to read the tone he/she felt from the comments and clarify it. That is how this site is designed to work. One can only hope that others, that perhaps do not have my yachting background would pick up on innuendo the comment might cause and it was removed. To me, all boats are "she" as it has been in nautical terms for hundreds of years. Using female pronouns for a boat isn't necessarily sexist, though of course it's as antiquated as Sir Walter Scott's prose. However, the vernacular, jocular tone of "she had some big guns" suggests personification, and so one wonders how one is supposed to read "and a nice runway"--as a "landing strip". You presume too much! I had a look and I'd rather answer here (because I had to look up what a metaphor was). I think the edit's probably correct- I understand a device to mean a pattern or design in an artwork; since the device could have some meaning (like the drawing of a knot indicating something bound in union) I suppose you could talk of a metaphorical device. But here the context seems to be Bernini's use of "offstage lighting" to highlight objects of devotion- areas of the painting are lightened as if illumination is coming from outside the canvas. Metaphor's probably better- but metaphor for what? The article doesn't say, does it? If all the world's a stage, what is all the light? I hope this is helpful. I've probably made a eejit of meself. Good spot. That Pastscape ref says "Scheduled. (6-9) ", but refs 6-9 are all over 50 years old or to minor newsletters rather than official sources. The current definitive list is The Historic England list. If you choose advanced search & select location as Wells & scheduled as heritage category it shows 3 sites (barn, gate & part of palace), not including the cathedral. If you do the same advanced search for location = Mendip & category = scheduled you get 234 - I'm trying to find which of those 234 are not in our list, or whether they have an entry twice (which happens sometimes).— Rodtalk 07:36, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
