Need help from South Indian Wikipedians

Need interwikis at Upma. It seems strange that there aren't interwikis to corresponding articles on this topic at the Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, and Tamil Wikipedias. Also, the names (and native script) in each of these languages should be added to the article. Badagnani (talk) 21:28, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

Bot that searches for India related articles can be enhanced

Please add Carnatic and Hindustani as terms/keywords in India related articles. When either of these are found in an article, the article can be included as Indian related. Project team may kindly do the needful (to AlexNewArtBot?). Thank you.

VasuVR (talk) 17:17, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Why not start a taskforce, Indian music instead? Alex bot can then be setup to write music related articles to a sub-page under the task force. Thoughts? Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 01:42, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
Good idea. I'm sure Ncmvocalist and many other wikipedians will be interested in this. Mspraveen (talk) 06:48, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
I love this idea, but I'm stuck to a weak support at this stage. Some editors have made it very difficult for any progress to be made in terms of improving the quality of certain Indian music articles. If the previous approach continues without any input to try to keep things cool, then I suspect conflicts from those articles might spill into the taskforce too, and I don't want to see that happen. (Ideally, if that approach has changed to respect our aim, then with pleasure, I'd fully support the proposal). I request members of this WikiProject keep the talk page of Carnatic music on their watchlist, and try to keep editors of the article focused on the ultimate aim: to edit in accordance with Wikipedia policies, to edit collaboratively, and to edit in a way that betters the articles on Wikipedia - not in a way that tends to be more POV-based. Thank you - Ncmvocalist (talk) 09:02, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
The taskforce might help in resolving the issues that you point out. It can provide a space to discuss the issues related to music-related articles. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 23:04, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
Yeah it could; if we can have ongoing input by others there, then that would be great, and I'd strongly support it. Ncmvocalist (talk) 02:09, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
Thank you all for the suggestions... Going ahead with few contributions on ragas, graha bedham, etc., primarily in Carnatic music. Also, changes to links, spellings, etc., including from Hindustani music articles to Carnatic music articles. VasuVR (talk) 05:31, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Chirag, could you ascertain if the data is published in a gazette? I believe it is. If so, the information is copyright-free (in PD) and we can upload it to wikipedia. See Template:Indian law copyright for details. =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:41, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
Some additional information: I've made this page: User:Nichalp/districts using a script. Might be worth a look. =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:43, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
Yup the data is published in a gazette. I think it usually an extra-ordinary gazette or some such. The page is helpful. But can we link to wikipedia as a source? I'm starting to replace base URL's atleast embarrassing 404 error's are removed. We will have to take up correct deep linking in the second phase.

We can't link Wikipedia as a source, but at least the data can be put up on Wikisource or commons (as PDF) without a possibility of us losing it. Are you changing those links manually or through an automatic process? =Nichalp «Talk»= 13:42, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
Manually. Had to supervise each change. I used AWB tho, with half a dozen regexes. It's done on the mianspace. I'm not going after the Talk and User Pages. Some more links

HELP!!! NEEDED for Article on Sikh Rajputs

Someone put a tag on "Sikh Rajputs" article that it will be deleted in five days etc., this article can not be deleted as Sikh Rajputs exist and most claims made in the article are true as well known to local Indians in Punjab only the need is that some interested and knowledgeable editors with access to proper history books etc. can eventually come forward and develop the article properly in time, quoting credible sources. Foreign born and raised editors with no direct local Indian knowledge are requested not to vandalize it as per their own fastly held thoughts and beliefs.

Thanks

Atulsnischal (talk) 06:58, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing it up here. Just because you don't agree with another editor, you cannot construe his/her actions as vandalism. Removing a proposed deletion template (which you did) will categorize as vandalism. The deletion template clearly indicated the reasons and asked readers to refer to the talk page. Until a
consensus is reached, the template should not be removed. I hope more editors can join the discussion on the article's talk page to resolve this matter. Mspraveen (talk

india int'l relations

I think we should write an article about India's relations with the Islamic world in general (instead of a specific country). I wrote a paper about India's relations with the islamic world (excluding pakistan/bangladesh, as that opens up a whole new can of worms) in school. There's plenty to cite both online and offline for the central asia, the middle east, south east asia, and, to a lesser extent, africa as well. Is there any assistance up for this? Hello, I have query on the ideology of this organization listed in the infobox in the article

Social Democracy. Also I have no idea how the INC has anything to do with Socialism. Social liberalism is also listed in its political ideology which I believe is incorrect because the party never supported many things which can be considered social liberalism like legalization of homosexuality, legalization of euthanasia etc. although they promote free trade and multiculturalism. please save POK article from deletion by pakistanis

Pakistan occupied Kashmir
article has been posted for deletion..i have made the following appeal there:

  • do not delete : PLEASE allow editing to take place in this article so that it gets balanced; disabling editing and then crying unbalanced is hypocrisy!!!..As we all know we didn't delete european union article just because there was an "england" article or "france" article or "germany" article (which are part of EU nevertheless) ... Similarly we did not destroy soviet union article just because it is divided into 15 parts..Further it is very very clear that POK is not the same as azad k as pok also includes trans karakoram tract, gilgit and baltistan (from 1947 till now)...pok term is used by most if not all non pakistan media.so ip and soman contention invalid.. i think it is not "fork" since contents are not identical, verifiable, has reliable sources and differs from the other articles like "
Northern Areas" (at the maximum, there is a passing reference in the summary(if this is considered fork) style with redirect links to sub regions). So, i am opposing this high handed move based on ignorance..rather i suggest that those who suggest it as non neutral contribute towards making this neutral, if it is not already neutral..pahari sahib's contention of inflammatory not substantiated both in talk page of pok or otherwise..so DO NOT DELETEKashmircloud (talk

State names in their official languages in the states templates page

The state names should also be written in the official language of the state, this standard wikipedia practice is followed at all the individual state pages. I am invariant under co-ordinate transformations (talk) 02:49, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Upload script for photographs

Hi all,

I have written a Perl script, Nichalp's upload script, that you can use to batch upload your photographs to Wikimedia Commons. The script has a lot of functions including:

  1. adding infoboxes, categories, and geoboxes;
  2. embedding your name, caption, and GPS data as Exif data;
  3. autorotation of images to correct the orientation;
  4. renaming images on-the-fly; and
  5. rigorous checking to ensure that categories, licences and descriptions are added.

Do have a go at testing it. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:54, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Impressive! :) Is it still beta? Mspraveen (talk) 04:31, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
No. I'm done testing it, but with fifty odd input variables, its difficult to catch all permutations and combinations. Currently it only allows you to upload JPG files that are your own images. If there is a demand, I'll modify it to include other media files and third-party images. Before that I would like to know input from users. =Nichalp «Talk»= 05:15, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
I also made a custom script for India-related uploads, by removing several unnecessary input parameters. =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:13, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Request for comments

While I was still naive about AfDs on the pedia, I observed one article -

Srija, the estranged daughter of Chiranjeevi. This biography is a one-event article and hence I felt this is of no encyclopedic value. I took it to AfD and here is its discussion. My concerns (as you might see from its talk page
) were and still are the following:

  • Srija is known only for one event
  • The contending editor claims 200000 Google hits, whereas my contention was that he had a very poor argument because it was a non-valid general criteria as per
    cannot assume inheritance
    .

Based on my understanding, I don't see the existence of this article on its own. Though it is

verifiable, I think the article can be merged with Chiranjeevi's page. But the contending editor doesn't seem to budge from his stand of google hits and a bunch of Chiranjeevi fanatics supporting his cause. I request comments from the community here for the next steps. Thanks. Mspraveen (talk

Bot assisted Auto Assessment

Remember the last time we did this for

Bot0612 ? Now TinucherianBot is able to do the same ( see BRFA
).

The bot basically does this : It looks at the Talk: page for an article, and looks at the classes it has been given. Then, it adds the highest class to the template for the project that it is working for, say WP India here. E.g. if a talk page of article has one Project banner with 'Start' class and 'B' class from another Project banner, '|class=B' will be added to the Project banner class to our project banner.

Currentlty there are over 11,000 Unassessed articles for our project and I was thinking whether we should do the excerise once again. We may get a few false positives (less than 5% I would imagine) but it's a small price to pay for the huge benefit of automation. Also, a false positive is likely to result in the article being identified and properly assessed, which might not otherwise happen. This process saves hours of work for human editors, leaving them free to actually improve the articles in question. Thoughts? -- Tinu Cherian - 07:16, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

What about Class C? We are not using it at the moment. =Nichalp «Talk»= 07:22, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
I have seperate code for projects without class C, which ignores C rating. -- Tinu Cherian - 07:25, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Before running this, can it do a dry run and identify which categories have maximum unassessed articles? I am not sure how that can help, but it could an interesting info. BTW, a lot of articles do not have talk pages yet, can the bot identify those numbers? --GDibyendu (talk) 07:31, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
You can see how the bot ran for
WP India}} here) from Category:Unassessed-Class_India_articles only and then auto assess them. -- Tinu Cherian
- 07:48, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Useful. Last weekend, I sat and manually tagged and assessed about 300 odd articles relating to
AWB). What I was doing was to search for the keyword - 'film' in the unassessed articles. With this, I obtained those with WP:FILM and WP:BIO assessments. I updated WP:India's class parameter with the same as the other existent ones. If your bot can do something like this for all the descendant taskforces, that would be great. Mspraveen (talk
) 07:52, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
As per GDibyendu, there needs to be a check performed for all India-related articles which are untagged by anyone. Maybe there was a discussion on this previously, but what's the answer to this? Mspraveen (talk) 07:54, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
praveen, i didnt get what is meant by " there needs to be a check performed for all India-related articles which are untagged by anyone" ? btw this bot directly autoassess "|class" to the main project itself , so that all the task forces also inherit it automatically. The bot is run ONLY on Unassessed articles with the WP India from Category:Unassessed-Class_India_articles. It doesnot reassess those articles which are assessed already. -- Tinu Cherian
- 08:02, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Tinu, I'm referring to those new or pseudo-new India-related articles that are created. 1) Since there is no tagging done on them already by any wikiproject, the bot will fail to assess it. How do we tackle this? 2) What about articles having WP:India and other wikiproject on their talk pages, but neither have a class rating? Mspraveen (talk) 08:07, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
I have an idea. Can your bot also perform this additional task?
  1. List all uncategorised and unrated articles into a spreadsheet (CSV format)
  2. Also list the wikiproject and the word count. The word count is a flag for a reviewer. If the article is has a higher word count, it would be an indicator to B grade.
  3. Editors can then enter the importance, and based on the word count (text word count, not template word count), a reviewer can rate the article in the CSV file. Popups could be used to scan an article without it loading.
  4. The bot reads the csv file and adds the rating.
This would be a lot faster than editing each talk page of the article. =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:03, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Comment. The prose count can be done using User:Dr pda/prosesize.js. I don't know if this is useful and/or possible. Mspraveen (talk) 08:10, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Also unidentified copyvio articles might be classed as B with your idea, Nichalp. Mspraveen (talk) 08:11, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
The idea is not to replace a human review, but flag articles that could merit a possibly higher rating. Its highly unlikely that a 3kb article will be rated as class B. Human review cannot be substituted, but the flags to assist a reviewer to prioritise reviews would be helpful. =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:20, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Unfortunately my bot doesnt have the capability that Nichal said. It can only assess for a project based on other banners. The last time we did this , it was a huge success. Also, a false positive, if any, is likely to result in the article being identified and properly assessed, which might not have otherwise happened.I am sure that most of the remaining unassessed articles are either in Stub/Start classes. With the primary intention to reach every article to FA or GA, a thin margin of articles that may fall back to start or move up to B class doesnt practically make much difference. But bot actually reuses the human review ( for another project) for our project also -- Tinu Cherian - 08:58, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
I am all for rerun of the Tinu's child (and I also remember how it was put behind bars by some notorious admins). Well, I was thinking on the pending question from last time. Why can't the unassessed articles - meaning which belong to only India project and are not assessed or associated with any other project - be also automatically tagged based on the word count? DYK rules specify all article with more than 1500 letters (including whitespaces but excluding lists and infoboxes) are non stubs. So all such unassessed articles can be atleast given start class ratings. Later if the article qualifies for a higher rating manual review can be done. This way we would be reducing the unassessed count in a legal way. What say ? --gppande «talk» 21:28, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
I clearly remember what happened last time and I don't think you can term admin as 'notorious' for that. It was very much logical fot them to raise concerns. However, such false positives can be easily avoided as long as bot does not add WP India banner. The unassessed articles (11000+) all have WP India banner already and are not accessed yet. So, I don't see any similar false positive resulting if only the category of unaccessed articles is targetted. Only thing is that some more tweaking would be needed in bot code/script as the category its targetting is not of articles, but of talk pages. --GDibyendu (talk) 16:59, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I am saying only unassessed articles in my comment. My point is they can also be included in the scope of this bot as they were left out last time for lack of consensus. If we can build that consensus this time and if Tinu can do that technically (which I am sure he is a champion in it) then India project will have some what better stats. --gppande «talk» 20:29, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
I don't agree with Tinu that a small margin of articles rated as B-class will not matter. In fact I think that Wikipedia 0.5 version includes these B-class articles. So I'm not quite sure how 5% margin will affect the project overall. Mspraveen (talk) 17:11, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Coordinates

Looking at the article Katihar, the coordinates are shown just as "25.53, 87.58". I realize that all of India is in the Northern hemisphere and the Eastern hemisphere, but shouldn't this display with an "N" and an "E" in the coordinates, as is done for most geographical locations? I don't know all the ways we specify coordinates in Wikipedia so I would appreciate it if someone else could make the necessary changes. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 05:32, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

For decimal notation of coordinates, positive values for latitude and longitude indicate the northern and eastern hemisphere respectively. So, adding references is redundant. Nevertheless, N and E are specified in
Template:Infobox Indian Jurisdiction just for the sake of clarity. As this is an output of coord, you would have to take up the issue if it is really required, on that template talk page. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»=

) 22:58, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Ok, but other than New Delhi, (and possibly Kolkata, Simla during British Raj), what other cities can you talk about here? During the pre-British period, there were a multitude of regional kingdoms with their own principal cities. Mughal empire is a possibility, but even it didn't cover whole of India, esp. the south. So, which cities do you plan to cover? --Ragib (talk) 23:08, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Also included in the scope would be the interregnum period after 1911 when Lutyens' Delhi was still to be realised. It would be interesting to note where the administrative headquarters lay. =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:32, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
Agra can also qualify if we include medieval period of Mughals in this article. --gppande «talk» 07:40, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
Fatehpur Sikri to be exact too. But I don't support the Mughal kingdom as a part of the "Indian nation". =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:48, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
Not against the idea but Ragib's point is worth thinking about. India really existed as a single nation after about 1858. Perhaps the article is better titled Capitals of India since, before the British arrived, there were many capitals. During the Mughal period, for example, in addition to Delhi, Agra, and FS, one should include the capital of the Vijayanagar, the capital of the Marathas, possibly the capital of whatever kingdom Sher Shah Suri ran before he defeated the Mughals, etc. etc. Even better, call it Capitals in South Asian History or some such thing because neither Bangladesh nor Pakistan, which share a history with the historical India, are a part of the modern India. What is now India has only one capital, New Delhi. --Regents Park (count the magpies) 12:57, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
I fully agree with this view. Capitals of South Asia or Captials of Indian Subcontinent could also be title for this. But, some criteria also has too be fixed: which states/kingdoms should be listed (size). It will be an interesting article but probably won't be easy to compile.--GDibyendu (talk) 17:22, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Capital of China article is really titled Historical Capitals of China and is along the lines of what we're talking about. Except for the naming issue (I think Historical Capitals of South Asia will likely be the most acceptable) the list will also be an excellent encapsulation of Indian (South Asian) history. --Regents Park (count the magpies

I added 3 cities. Check it out. --gppande «talk» 10:26, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
All good suggestions/recommendations. Similar issues exist in the China article, which had to cover multitude of regional kingdoms (e.g.,
PRC,etc.) I'm not too fussy about the article name as long as we can get the content right. I guess it has to be in a list format, but atleast some of the entries in the list would have some interesting details/stories to go with them (e.g., Tughlaq's shifting of capital from Delhi to Daulatabad, etc.) deeptrivia (talk

Help for updating the page

I request the editors who are online to please update the page:

Sanskrit revival - as this is a phenomenon relevant to the 20th and 21st century, the subject should be expanded to reflect this transition from one century to another. As this is a large subject, the addition of many editors from diverse perspectives would benefit the expansion of this article. Thanks. Ism schism (talk) 19:05, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Is there a bias towards deleting India related articles on Wikipedia: case of the Manu Sharma article

There is currently an user who is repeatedly deleting the

Murder of Jessica Lall
. The articles are substantially different, Manu Sharma focusing on the manner in which witnesses were paid off etc; and sourced with 11 references.

I argued on WP:Articles_for_deletion/Manu_Sharma that Manu is prominent on his own, and in fact, the murder became prominent only because it was Manu who committed it. Without allowing the argument to continue (there were 1 delete, 2 redirects, 2 keep), it was abruptly closed saying it was inconclusive, and then the article was deleted by redirection.

No one seems to be raising such issues with articles like

Lakhbir Singh Brar Rode was deleted without any arguments (it subsequently became a redirect to his organization). Perhaps this is not the right forum for this discussion, but I wonder if there is some unconscious bias operating behind deleting articles of India interest, just because others may not have heard of these people. mukerjee (talk

Manu Sharma deserves his own article. The article should have been listed here Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/India. We cannot expect people out of India to determine the notability of events in India, so that is why the sub page was created. Ask those editors to review the decision, or discuss it here. =Nichalp «Talk»= 19:15, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
The Manu Sharma page is now dead - it is a redirect. But the AfD was inconclusive. There are two users who keep deleting this page. Unless someone puts some more meat on the discussion page for the Manu page, I can't keep putting it back. So pls do visit this Talk:Manu Sharma page to see the debate at the bottom. Also, can someone put it up for AfD on the Deletion related to India pages, so that at least we can have a proper debate? I don't know how to put up AfD's or I would have done it myself. mukerjee (talk) 11:13, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Kindly consider a deletion review if you think it was unfair to change it into a redirect. Once listing it there, you may also let this community know of it. Hope it helps. Mspraveen (talk) 12:51, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

It nominated for deletion again: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Manu Sharma (2nd nomination). Do weigh in. Remember it's not a vote, we need thoughtful reasoning if the person is notable or not. =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:55, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Try including float:right in the style parameters. =Nichalp «Talk»= 07:44, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

ARYAN

Someone has to seriously get involved in the ARYAN article since it has a lot to do with India's national history and roots. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.68.115.102 (talk) 06:43, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Public domain

The PD-India tag is very confusing. It just explains that photographs published prior to 1948 and in public domain. It does not mention anything about movie screenshots, audio and visual media, posters, etc. Could anyone clarify my doubts and if possible provide tags for the same. Thanks-RavichandarMy coffee shop 16:42, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Movie material is never public domain. BTW, copyrights on letters written by Gandhiji are going to be public domain soon as copyright status on them will expire soon. --gppande «talk» 18:20, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
I think it is PD, but try listing it on
WP:C. People who volunteer there are more comfortable with legal wording. =Nichalp «Talk»=

Is there really someone called Parvati Melton or is that just another name for Parvathi Menon (or is it a hoax)? (Just checking.) --Regents Park (one for sorrow) 18:19, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Not again. This has happened earlier too --gppande «talk» 09:34, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
Nope. A part of this happened earlier on when there was a question on Parvathi Menon, the actress and Parvathi Menon, the journo. FYI, Parvati Melton and Parvathi Menon are two different actresses from Malayalam and Telugu film industries respectively. Mspraveen (talk) 11:14, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
OK. Thanks! --Regents Park (one for sorrow) 16:57, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

I've nominated the article Iyer for a peer review. Do drop by and participate in the review process. Thanks-RavichandarMy coffee shop 11:27, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Ranjit Singh

Hello chaps. Anyone fancy a look at the current edit war at Ranjit Singh [1] and see if you can work out who, if anyone, is right? William M. Connolley (talk) 22:16, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

At the moment, the best thing they can do is put both views in and balance them, or if there's a question of NPOV, remove the section in question and protect so they work on it on the talk page - an article RFC would probably attract a bit more attention too. If this is still a problem by the end of next week (remind if so), then I'll take a look. Ncmvocalist (talk) 04:14, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
