A1: Relative article quality along with the mix of topics already listed are often deciding factors in what gets posted. Any given day of the year can have a great many important or significant historical events. The problem is that there is generally only room on the Main Page to list about 5 events at a time, so not everything can be posted. As stated on verifiable article over a poor one versus trying to determine objectively how much a subject is important or significant. Keep in mind that the quality requirements only apply to the selected bolded article, not the other links. Thus, an event may qualify for multiple dates in a year if there is an article written in a summary style and an article providing detailed content; if one of those pages have cleanup issues, the other page can be bolded as an alternate. Another criterion is to maintain some variety of topics, and not exhibit, just for example, tech-centrism, or the belief that the world stops at the edge of the English-speaking world. Many days have a large pool of potential articles, so they will rotate in and out every year to give each one some Main Page exposure. In addition, an event is not posted if it is also the subject of this year's scheduled featured article or featured picture. Q2: There are way too many 20th-century events listed. Why aren't there more events from the 19th century and before? A2: The short, basic reason is the writing articles about recent events. As with the events, article quality and diversity in time period, geography, and reason for notability are all contributing factors in whether an article gets selected for inclusion. Q6: Some of the holidays/observances that are listed have dates in parentheses beside them. What do they mean? Recent discussions have pointed out that the oxygen explosion occurred on April 13 relative to the parties involved. NASA sources cite April 13, and American sources cite April 13. Since local time is used whenever possible (even though there is no local time in space) it seems reasonable that the event should be listed on April 13. As an international community, Wikipedia is organized along UTC, and thus the main page and the events listed revolve around UTC, not the official local time of a specific region or country. According to the official news release by the Government of Saskatchewan, it seems that this observance is only for this year 2009 to mark the airing of the final episode of Corner Gas. [1] If that is the case, if it is not going to be a regular holiday observed year after year with some international significance or interest (and Corner Gas#Broadcast and distribution currently does not mention if it is broadcast in multiple countries), then it does not belong on OTD. Instead of the hostel fire (local news), the discovery of the Katyn massacre is a much more important (world news) event. From April 13:

It may be too late to change this for today, but I'd strongly suggest a switch for future April 13 anniversaries. PS. I see now that it was moved to March 5 for the 70th anniversary where it is still present. I'd suggest moving it back here, as the discovery date is more important and more known than signing the order for it date.
