Yes, wherever I find an internet facility I work on wikipedia. My people say that I am really possesed by "Wiki Bhootham" (Wiki ghost) or "Ma Wiki" spirit. I have added some text to the above draft article from Simple English Wikipedia where one reference is in French and the other is in Spanish. It now needs your expert verification. I have completed my work on it. It is left to you now to copy edit and post it on DYK. The Vietnam article in User:Nvvchar/Vietnam Province 3 has the history linked to present day Vietnam. Hanoi districts

I noticed you've added a list of redlinked streets to

Cau Giay. Are you sure it's worth it to add all of those? I doubt that any particular street in any of those districts is notable enough to deserve an article of its own (as would, say, Wall Street
)... wards, sure, and maybe notable buildings on some of them, but not the streets themselves.

One thing I could see working is a list of streets in the Old Quarter, in

Hoan Kiem District, since those are well-known for their themes (i.e. one street for sunglasses, one for silk, another for shoes, etc). That kind of list would be notable, and would be a valuable addition to the scanty coverage of the Old Quarter (which has been at WP:VIET's Requested articles section since forever). --dragfyre_ʞןɐʇc
18:48, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

OK, that's fine. I just noticed the change and wondered if there was any particular intention behind it, but I understand. Regarding province/district articles, one thing that would be wonderful to have is demographic tables instead of plain lists of subdivisions, such as what we have at

By the way, speaking of all these Vietnam-related articles, there are a few issues for discussion at WT:WPVIET that you might want to give your two cents on, such as the use Diacritics in articles and article titles, and the size of locator maps. --dragfyre_ʞןɐʇc 19:54, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, although I should be slightly insulted at the suggestion I only do articles on Nigerian Generals. You may not be aware that I was a major contributor to Roadkill cuisine, which made onto the front page with the assertion "Did you know ... that partaking in roadkill cuisine is advocated by some vegans?" It lasted about an hour before it was yanked after the howls of protest started flooding in. A high point in my editing career. In the heat of a war over AfDs for bilateral relations articles, I think Iceland-South Korea relations was something of a classic. Seriously though, I notice that your earlobes look completely different these days. Aymatth2 (talk) 00:25, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

Just kidding. I tend to stray into an area, do some editing on related articles, then get sidetracked and stray off into some other area. Think you do too. To me, editing is a bit like doing a jigsaw puzzle where you don't know what the picture will look like until you have dug around to find the pieces and then fitted them together. I am not that picky about the subjects, although mostly they seem to be people or places. A harmless pastime, maybe sometimes useful if there are not too many gaps in the pictures. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:30, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

I am optimistic. In a sense, the whole web is a very informal sort of mega-wiki where people present material and the search engines crudely cross-index the sites. Some sites are fairly reliable, others not at all, and readers make their own judgement. Wikipedia is part of that broader context. I am sure the overall web will evolve to give better databases, indexes, cross-linkages and reliability weightings - these are still very early days. Wikipedia will probably also evolve to include more formal linkages to trusted databases, and maybe some day will dissolve out into Web 5.0 or whatever. I don't see it as a static structure, and do see value in whatever content is added, even if there are huge gaps. Meanwhile, it is satisfying to focus in on one subject and put together a essay that gives some information that may be of use. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:39, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Yes, both the selsoviets and the corresponding rural settlements are in the database. Creating set indices on those is actually my first project after the database is finished, although I am still thinking about the best ways to go about those. So far I'm leaning to creating the

set indices
with redirects to the administrative/municipal composition sections of the appropriate districts. Then we'll be able to put the basic info into those sections without having to create ~20,000 substubs on each individual selsoviet. Of course, should someone have more than basic info about any given selsoviet/rural settlement, a separate article can always be created then. What do you think?

As for something like Template:Third-level administrative divisions of Russia, I should tell you that there's a lot more work there than meets the eye. Each federal subject of Russia has its own way of going about those (e.g., not everywhere they are called selsoviets, in some FSs selsoviets co-exist with other types of divisions, in others selsoviets don't even exist any more; plus, you need to cross-reference the selsoviets with the corresponding rural settlements, and not in all FSs they correspond 1:1; then there is that whole masculine/neuter/feminine naming mess... you get my drift? :)). Once the database is done, such a cross-walk can be created fairly easily (because all of the relations and terminology are properly documented); with a manual approach, it's just going to be one big mess... even with the example above, I count so many problems it makes me cringe to think them multiplied by 20,000 (or even by 238, if you only do Buryatia)... Sorry!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 8, 2010; 13:38 (UTC)

Well, rural settlements are municipalities (are nicely/consistently structured/named they are, too); they are just added on top of the existing administrative divisions, which are not nicely/consistently structured/named :)

As for the database, here's where I'm at. There are 83 federal subjects that need to be covered. As of today, the database covers 40 FSs, which are in perfect order, and another 27 which need further review/clarification/amendment/updating (that's not too difficult of a task, though). Most of the remaining 16 are not in there mostly because the necessary sources are simply not yet available, although I am gradually adding the partial info as it becomes available.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 8, 2010; 13:56 (UTC)

I don't want to start on the forty, because it's easier to do everything properly once than to have to update hundreds of pages every time additional info for new FSs becomes available... which will leave significantly less time for me to work on the database... it's a vicious circle I don't want to enter. Patience and focus pay, you know :)

When I will be 100% done, I don't know. When those sixteen FSs pass the missing laws I need is obviously not something under my control. On the bright side, I am on the finish line for some of the datasets (e.g., the lists of rural settlements are available for all 83 FSs; I just need to finish the data entry for the missing 16). Rest assured, I am neither slacking nor procrastinating; things are just taking longer than I anticipated. Honestly, had I known three years ago when I just started working on this blasted database just how much time and effort it is going to cost, I probably would have never even started the project in the first place. Lucky for y'all, once I start something, I don't stop until it's all done (unless I die first, that is :)).—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 8, 2010; 14:45 (UTC)

I'll shoot myself well before 2015, if I see it's going to be taking that long! :) I'm not planning to sit on my ass doing nothing and wait while those 16 FSs pass the laws I need either. Any missing information I do not yet have can be substituted by the data from OKATO. The reasons why I'm waiting are because despite technically being a "reliable source" (by our definitions) OKATO sucks big when it comes to actual accuracy and timely updates and because there is some other good-quality data which I can occupy myself with. While I'm working on the data entry, there's a chance some other missing pieces will appear, and I can get to work on that (when I started to work on the database, I only had good data for perhaps a dozen FSs). Once I run out of those, however, I'll start filling the missing pieces with the OKATO data. So don't you despair just yet :)—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 8, 2010; 15:14 (UTC)

I was thinking of producing copy-paste lists locally using the database and entering them manually into Wikipedia for a while (as to make sure the process flow is OK). After the process is polished and we make sure that there is not going to be something unexpected hindering with automation, someone will need to program a bot (I don't have skills for that part) and finish the job. If for some reason automation turns out to be unfeasible, then we'll dump the core onto a maintenance page, break the work into manageable pieces, write up detailed instructions, and call for volunteers (you are already signed up as #1 in that list, did you know? :))—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 8, 2010; 16:25 (UTC)

Oh yes they can be. I didn't slave over these templates for no reason :)—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 8, 2010; 16:51 (UTC)

Coming back to the pin maps, Viktor said that he'd been taking a break from those maps for a while, but he is now just about to resume working on them again. I think we'll have more of those pin maps fairly soon. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 9, 2010; 14:19 (UTC)

Oh, I think he knows :) I, too, hope he's not going to run out of steam before finishing the project... or we'll be stuck with yet another incomplete set of maps!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 9, 2010; 14:32 (UTC)

Categories: Region, district, etc.

Yes - you are right - will do that. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:42, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Question: Template:Oaxaca has a huge list of municipalities hidden in it: there are 571. The list is not very accessible because the reader has to click "show" twice, and it is redundant to the sortable list in the article Municipalities of Oaxaca. I can't see much navigational value. What I would prefer is to make eight templates, one for each region, which would expand to show the districts and the municipalities within each district. Visually they would be a bit like Template:Regions and districts of Oaxaca, but one level lower, if that makes sense. I think it would be more useful for navigation. Would it violate an overall standard? Aymatth2 (talk) 14:10, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

I took a first shot at one with

Template:Huajuapan District, Oaxaca. Maybe this works better. Views? Aymatth2 (talk

I have "done"

Etla District, Oaxaca and the municipalities in the district. I think this works reasonably well for readers who use navbars to move around, and will continue with the other districts. They all need much more real content, but sometimes it is easier to do this kind of grunt work systematically first and get it over with, then do research & improvement. Aymatth2 (talk

Issues

OK, I think the shouting on both sides is done, and it's time to talk - reasonably, decently, productively.

With regard to the maps, I suggest starting a section heading on the talk page of the template and saying what you would like done - in particular, what maps etc are available (eg which you have created) to be used for the purpose. We managed it last September on the Australian template, I don't see why the same is not possible here as the formats are relatively similar and I should be able to figure out what the PNG people have done logic-wise. Orderinchaos 17:07, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

I just have an awful amount of work to be doing on here so anything which is unproductive and reverted I get angry with because the time spent on it could have gone into referencing/expanding our stubs. I think the PNG is redundant ans several years out of date. Obviously I am now powerless to delete it so please at least get rid of the old X and Y coordinates and update it with the svg maps and the regional map choice. I'd be happy to create maps of the provinces for regional views. Especially important for the islands. But if you insist it must me kept please please please get shot of the Krypton Factor maps and introduce a standard pushpin mapping option. Once again my main issue for the infobox is the maps. That is my major concern about most infoboxes I edit because I create maps and add them to articles and certain old templates do not allow for this. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:13, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

That was what I thought too (I agree with you about the maps) - just wanted to make sure. Provincial views sounds good - we'd probably use the provincial views for smaller towns and the national for bigger ones. Orderinchaos 17:21, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

If you are wondering what I mean by Krypton Factor look at this. The colours look very familiar..

Haha yes... I think the problem was that back in the day the only thing we had that was legal was NASA satellite imagery (that and PNG is a very green, jungle-dense country). Even in my home state I still occasionally find crazy maps from the bad old days on some pages. Orderinchaos 17:27, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Haha thanks! By 2020 maybe 50 or so will not be stubs eh? Just too much work needed!!! Dr. Blofeld White cat 07:40, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

I may expand a few. Some of them have no information at all, crying out to be fixed. It is easy enough to bring them up to the level of Santa Cruz de Bravo, which may be sufficient for a community of this size. But yes, a huge job. There are probably 10 million communities the size of Santa Cruz de Bravo. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:24, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
