Hi Bamse, just checking in. I haven't forgotten about the emaki page but have been overwhelmed by real-life events so I'm not editing much. Hopefully by May I can be back full-time. I haven't had a chance to pull Bowring's diary out of the stack of books it's fallen into, but I will get to it. I think the emaki page should have a more developed lead - what are your thoughts? Also, I think I've addressed your comments on the biography page. Also thanks for holding the fort the other day when the biography was on the front page.

Me is not much active at the moment on wikipedia, but will try to help as much as time permits. Agree about the lead, but I am not really good at leads. Do you have some things in mind that could be added to it. bamse (talk) 11:08, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

I'm not very good with leads either and need to bring myself up to speed again, but when I do, I don't mind trying to put in a lead for you that you can tweak. Mostly everything on the page needs to be summarized in the lead and a nice image added. It's a complicated page though, so not all that easy to summarize when not completely immersed in sources.

That's a tall order with so many to choose from. I won't get to it immediately though. Leads really are tough for me. None of my pages get a lead until the very end. I need to spend some time thinking about how to tie all of this up. I also want to summarize it on the diary page - which might help the thought process along.

There was paragraph in the background section that seemed to work well in the lead, so to take the easy path I've tried that for now. If you think it doesn't work, go ahead and revert. I've also moved the images slightly - but also can be reverted. I had the problem of too many images and not enough text in the Murasaki page - so many images exist for her work. Maybe the subject for a list? Something to think about ...

Also agreed, despite best efforts to gloss and explain terms as part of the description; think it's important to retain this stuff though as it's apparently these kind of details that are so important for comparative purposes - plus, by trying to follow the text in the images (as with the paintings), it might be good for ?understanding?/appreciation; lipless - have linked lip to flange; "In the triangular field at each gable end is a "king-post", supporting the end of the ridgepole" was an attempt to locate and indicate function of king post, obviously not a great one. Do you think Urashimataro might like to be involved in these architectural points? Have added extra link to gable. A detailed (and labelled) image would certainly be great, but I couldn't easily find an old one when taking the photos of the paintings. Thanks a lot for the detailed comments; Art and Architecture Good Articles, of which there are lots, gets a combined 10 views a day - unlike FAs which get rotated across the Main Page (like Murasaki Shikibu, an extra 25,000 views in the first day) - so, per law of diminishing returns, and all those hundreds of Prefectural Natural Parks which still don't have so much as a stub..., plus the fact I need to be offline for most of the next few months, I'm not sure if I'll nominate it. (Oh yes, and per quality scale, this should be "approaching (although not equalling) the quality of a professional encyclopedia." Not necessarily attained... See for example Britannica article, which seems to largely comprise a Maltesers advert of a girl lifting up her top...) However your comments are still more than valid/helpful. Wow, that removed lots! Plus, possibly, Eureka! Have just replaced the link to the commons folder with links to the individual image files (revert if you dislike). The library also has a copy of this - 1915 (so out of copyright), but the b&w images are amazing; be good for the buildings - for condition then, effects of restoration since - plus lots of statues etc. Interested? That's good news - and thank you for your input/compliments/offer; here's the first of those images (think it's one you're missing) - I have about a quarter of the five hundred or so now; resisted the beautiful temples to concentrate initially on the sculptures; propose to retain naming per plates - so as not to misinterpret anything and maybe interesting for the period names and romanization... Do you think there should be a new category in commons for these images? eg Japanese Temples and Treasures (1915) or Shimbi Shoin Temples & Treasures or something like that? There may be a few technical shortcomings on my part - it's really dark in the library and difficult to focus me old manual lenses (not able to use scanners as an external user), but maybe worth it? Like the annotation; is this bell one you're missing? Other than this, one of my favourites, I have for now only processed the NT statues for which there aren't yet any images; 1a, 1b, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10a, 10b; for 11a, and 11b, the caption for location only says 'Kwannondo', but I've checked against pictures in this book, and it looks identical to me (apart from absence of lotus petals around the pedestal), plus the book says it's NT, so I'm happy matching it with Kōgen-ji. Wow! Amazing set. Thank you. Put all into the treasure list and added some categories. The table does not look that empty anymore. As for what next, I don't have a preference. I am just a bit worried that not all of the images will find a place in a wikipedia article soon, particularly the non-NT sculptures. So perhaps to focus on i) non-NT sculptures of temples where these statues are the main image or main treasure and ii) details of some of the more famous/more interesting looking NT sculptures which might one day get their own wikipedia article (e.g. Guze and Kudara Kannon, Shakyamuni triad at Horyuji, Ashura,...); haven't checked whether those are already covered in detail by pictures on commons though. Don't worry - I'll concentrate for now on NTs! From elsewhere is your missing painting and the Taima Mandala; other pictures beside sculptures? how about 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 - I haven't checked all of these to see if they are the NTs, in particular none of the armour; they are all in the NT crafts category at the moment and some may need evicting; as for sculptures, similarly replacing a favourite with better 1 (how good is that?), and some new ones too - 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Pretty! Sesshu Toyo, Taima Mandala and 1-13 re-checked, added to NT lists and with some extra categories and descriptions. Only this image I believe is not a NT, at least I could not match it to any of the four NT armours of Oyamazumi Shrine (per this unreliable source and per google image search). Hello again, well spotted with the images - and you're not the only one, a Japanese user was fleshing out the Unkei article and others with them yesterday, which is pretty quick going. The four buildings are from a three volume set of around a thousand images, not great quality, but perhaps better than nothing; there's also an image of the main hall of Nanatsuji/Nanatsudera in Nagoya, an NT destroyed along with the NT pagoda during the bombing of 1945; the Horyuji statues are from a 60 issue publication on the temple and its treasures; the Saiendo Yakushi is particularly interesting I thought with all those swords arranged around the walls; more recent photos show bare plaster. I did really like your earlier suggestion above about concentrating on details for NT statues about which separate articles could be written. Have now pretty much finished Dainichi - would be good to have the usual comments and suggestions if you have a chance; also, do you have any thoughts about a title? "Statue of Dainichi Nyorai by Unkei (NT)"? There are a couple of other Dainichi's that seem to be attributed to him in some quarters on stylistic grounds. And yes, all 52 bosatsu (although apparently a few depict monks) - if you are interested I could process and upload; finally if there is anything you are particularly after for an article, image or info wise, let me know, as the library's collection is pretty good, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 15:46, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

Hadn't spotted the swords behind the Yakushi. Very interesting indeed. Do you know the reason or when the photo was taken? Can't remember seeing swords in a temple like that. Will have a look at the Dainichi Nyorai article shortly. I like the idea with the descriptive image. As for the title, perhaps "Dainichi Nyorai (Enjō-ji)" or "Dainichi Nyorai (Unkei)" or "Dainichi Nyorai Zazō (Enjō-ji)" or "Sculpture of Dainichi Nyorai (Enjō-ji)" or ... If this is by far the most famous Dainichi Nyorai sculpture, a title like "Dainichi Nyorai Sculpture" could work. If there are other Dainichi Nyorai sculptures by Unkei of comparable relevance, we might want to specify the location (Enjō-ji); assuming that there is only one such sculpture at the temple. As for what else to do, the bosatsu are nice, but I am not planning to write an article about them anytime soon, so it would be perhaps wasted effort. To photograph and upload all those images. Of course, if you have images for NT which are not covered yet (e.g. buildings, swords, crafts,...) that would be great. When I get time, I hope to complete two articles which I started in my sandbox: User:Bamse/Fujiwara no Hirotsugu Rebellion and User:Bamse/Ban Dainagon Ekotoba. Hello again, couple of updates (1) about the Angen dates and NengoCalc, I've double checked the transcription, and can't explain the discrepancy; (2) Maeda Kokinshu etc, double checked, all correctly identified (have requested renaming of the two switched files) - there's also Hokuzansho, which I think completes the set; (3) Fujiwara no Hirotsugu - I have what I think are the three relevant pages of Shoku Nihongi for 740 (as well as the Farris - can you access his discussion via google books? the link on your subpage doesn't allow me to browse) I see from your subpage that there are a couple of extra sections that might be useful relating to other years - I can fetch them next time; what's the best way to get these to you, email? I've been looking at images in some museums and found this [1] - do you know if this is an image we have at Commons? I'll go look, but can't always find what I want there. If not, I think I'll upload this to use - certainly it's not one we've used yet. Also thought you might be interested in this link [2]. I saw the discussion, but generally know little about ukiyo-e, so I left it to Viking Rollo and Oda Mari. Don't remember seeing that British Museum image on commons. Alternatively perhaps (not sure) Genji is depicted in the Genji Monogatari Emaki, but maybe you prefer a more portrait style image like you had. Personally I think the article already has many images of Heian people doing Heian stuff, so some calligraphy could be a good idea, also considering that she was a writer. I've sent (1) the Fujiwara passage - you asked what language it's in, well there's no kana; (2) the Farris about it; (3) mini pictures of the three Ban Dainagon scrolls; (4) the Ban Dainagon text; and (5) an English-language introduction to the Ban Dainagon; I've tried to OCR these - the Ban Dainagon text may have worked a bit, but unfortunately the Fujiwara hasn't really; I can easily reimage the Fujiwara if wished; as for the Ban Dainagon, as you know, what I hoped is I'd be able to have some decent quality images and do a photomerge, but there's generally not much overlap, sometimes there's a little missing, the paper's really glossy, and I've photographed them a couple of times and can't get a good result, so I've just sent some overall shots which at least have some labels, a working copy perhaps; individual scenes from other books should be much easier if you specify; good luck! The description page of the image (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Apple_Blossoms.jpg) says its dated Southern Song Dynasty, before 1279. Which I took it has to be in the 13th century, as early 12th century is more likely to be Northern Song. The date on the description page is quite unclear in my opinion. I just adjusted to the most reasonable period. However, I did some search, and it seems Zhao Chang was actually active during the Northern Song era. Also his surviving daughter married a commoner which would be extremely unlikely if she was a legitimate daughter since Nassau was considered a very royal line at the time and wouldn't have married below the rank of Count or Prince.
