WikiCup 2022 November newsletter
The 2022 WikiCup has drawn to a close with the final round going down to the wire. The 2022 champion is
Lee Vilenski (1752 points), who won in 2020 and was runner up in both 2019 and last year. In the final round he achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on cue sports. He was closely followed by
Bloom6132 (1732), who specialised in "In the news" items and DYKs, and who has reached the final round of the Cup for the past three years. Next was
BennyOnTheLoose (1238), another cue sports enthusiast, also interested in songs, followed by
Muboshgu (1082), an "In the news" contributor, a seasoned contestant who first took part in the Cup ten years ago. Other finalists were
Sammi Brie (930), who scored with a featured article, good articles and DYKs on TV and radio stations,
Kavyansh.Singh (370), who created various articles on famous Americans, including an FA on Louis H. Bean, famed for his prediction of election outcomes. Next was
PCN02WPS (292), who scored with good articles and DYKs on sporting and other topics and
Z1720 (25) who had DYKs on various topics including historic Canadians.
During the WikiCup, contestants achieved 37 featured articles, 349 good articles, 360 featured article reviews, 683 good article reviews and 480 In the news items, so Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors. Well done everyone! All those who reached the final round will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or the overall leader in this field.

Hello EpicGenius - you recently sent me a talk message about an edit I made re the Notable People section of the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn - I did not remove anything, but instead I added Thomas Mignone as both a Film Director and Writer - he's a well-accredited and award-winning film director and screenwriter - I'm sorry if I didn't edit it correctly - can you please add him under these two categories (there is a 'writer' category already but I added the 'Film Director' as a new category.... thank you for your help and love that you enjoy math (!) - I have an engineering degree myself and am always fascinated by mathematics too!!!! - Hello @reliable secondary source that shows that he is from Park Slope. After a reliable source is provided, you can re-add his name. Each name in the "Notable people" section is mentioned only once, so Mignone's name could go under a header of its own, for example "Film directors/screenwriters". Again, you would need to add a reliable source, or else your addition may be removed; I see that @Alansohn removed Mignone's name two years ago because there was no reliable source. – Epicgenius (talk) 17:04, 27 November 2022 (UTC)

- Steveguitar, what's needed is a reliable and verifiable source that connects Thomas Mignone to Park Slope. Yes, he's notable, but there is no mention of Park Slope in his article and no reference provided in the Park Slope article to back up the claim. A birth certificate is a problematic primary source and I don't see a way to make the claim verifiable. I've searched for sources in Google, in Google News and in Newspapers.com and I've found nothing; if I found a source, I would have added it to the article, but because I didn't, I removed Mignone as a notable. I'm willing to keep on looking, but without the required source, it will be removed. Look at the article for Park Slope, to see the types of sources that are used for other notables. Please read the fundamental polices of Wikipedia:Reliable sources and Wikipedia:Verifiability to gain an understanding of how Wikipedia works in terms of sourcing. - I have to agree with what Alansohn said. Per our "Biographies of living persons" policy, we unfortunately cannot accept private information like birth certificates, utility bills, drivers' licenses, etc. as sources that someone lives in a certain place. This applies even if you were to send the birth certificate privately. Not only would a general reader not be able to verify it, but it is generally not a good idea to entrust someone on the internet with private information like that. Wikipedia requires a reliable secondary source, e.g. a newspaper or magazine, for this information. If there is a reliable secondary source citing Thomas Mignone as living in Park Slope, we can re-add his name to the article. – Epicgenius (talk) 19:53, 27 November 2022 (UTC)

Positive reinforcement: an improved impact module to test
The goal of the Growth team is to encourage newcomers to try editing for the first time, and encourage them to keep editing. We want to increase newcomers' motivation by showing them how impactful their edits are.
Newcomers have access to an impact module; you can find yours at Special:Impact. The revised impact module provides new editors with more context about their impact. It will display the number of edits, the number of thanks received, the last time they edited, the number of consecutive days they edited, and the number of views for the articles they edited.
This module will soon be available at our pilot wikis starting December 1. You can already test this new module at Beta Wikipedia. For safety reasons, do not use your regular account and password at Beta wiki. Create a new, specific account for this wiki, with a different password.
Structured tasks: improvements based on patroller feedback
After the deployment of Structured tasks, we received feedback from various communities regarding how patrollers of recent changes were feeling overwhelmed by an increase in edits to check, and how some edits were poor quality or of poor relevance.
We made several improvements based on the feedback we received. Several points of improvement have already been addressed:
- Patroller fatigue:
- By default, newcomers can complete up to 25 "add a link" tasks and 25 "add an image" tasks per day. If patrollers are overburdened, each community can use Special:EditGrowthConfig to lower that limit.
- Quality of edits: what constitutes a "quality edit" is not a well defined concept. We initiated a discussion and summarized our findings. We also worked on the following improvements:
- Add a Link
- Underlinked articles are now prioritized, so it's less likely that newcomers are adding links to articles that are already have a lot of links.
- The confidence score was increased, so suggestions are more likely to be accurate.
- The default number of suggested links per article has been lowered to 3. This can be changed at Special:EditGrowthConfig. Communities can also exclude articles containing certain templates or categories from being suggested.

- Lists will no longer receive "add an image" suggestions.
- Disambiguation pages will no longer receive "add an image" suggestions.
- We have many further improvements we plan to make to "add an image" in early 2023. [1]

The Positive Reinforcement project will also address some of the concerns around encouraging newcomers to progress to higher value edits. The Growth team will soon work on strategies geared at "Leveling up" newcomers so they progress from easy to more difficult tasks.
Recent changes
- All Wikipedias now have the same onboarding experience. Previously, at a few wikis, 20% of new accounts didn't get the Growth features when they created their account. These 20% of new accounts were used as a control group, in order to know if the Growth features were changing newcomers' behavior. Experiments have shown that Growth features improve activation and retention, and as we want to provide the same onboarding experience at all Wikipedias, we have decided to remove the control groups. We will utilize control groups when testing new features, and German Wikipedia keeps a control group at their request. [2]
- The quality score for "add a link" suggestions will change. We will suggest less links for each article, but they will be more accurate. We will first deploy it at our pilot wikis, and then to all other wikis where this feature is available. [3][4]

News for mentors
- All Wikipedias can now setup and manage a mentorship program in an easier way.
- We changed the process to make it more reliable, easier to improve and easier to use.
- Wikipedias where mentorship hasn't been enabled yet can turn mentorship on following a new process. When done, mentors can sign-up by visiting
Special:MentorDashboard. - Wikipedias where the list of mentors already existed have been converted to the new system.
- A new special page —
Special:ManageMentors— now displays the list of mentors. This page can be transcluded on any other page. There are also new processes to signup as a mentor or to quit mentorship, and we improved community mentorship management.
- The Mentor dashboard's "Your mentees" module will have a new footer, called "Recent changes by your mentees". This footer will include a link to Recent changes, where mentors can see only edits made by their own mentees. [5]
