Re:Redirecting, New Articles

Hi Jp07. Well, creating a redirect is basically the same as creating an article. To do so follow these instructions:

  1. In the search box near the top left of a page, type the title of the new article, then click "Go".
  2. If the Search page reports "You may create the page" followed by the article name in red, then you can click the red article name to start editing.
  3. Enter the text "#REDIRECT [[ARTICLENAME]]" and replace "ARTICLENAME" with the target article (the article which you wish the redirect to direct readers to) of the redirect.
  4. Click "Save Page" to create the redirect.

Hope that helps to clarify things. Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions/concerns or are in need of assistance. Cheers, FASTILY (TALK) 04:51, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

re:Correction Explanation, Please

Hello Jp07. I meant no offense when I reverted your edit, but here's my reasoning for doing so:

  • "Metroid Prime: Trilogy is an action-adventure compilation video game developed by Retro Studios which is to be published by Nintendo..." could be interpreted as "Nintendo is going to publish Retro Studios".
  • "The single-disc game features...". I'm hesitant to call Metroid Prime: Trilogy an actual "game" because it's merely the name of the compilation.
  • "...first implemented in
    Metroid Prime 3
." "Metroid Prime 3" is a redirect to "Metroid Prime 3: Corruption", which is already wikilinked in the intro.

I do appreciate your comments at the peer review and will be taking them into consideration. In fact, I've already implemented some of what you suggested there (and so has Gary). Again, I meant no offense. Cheers and happy editing! -

Sure. I'm in the process of moving back to school and taking a final, so it might be a couple of days (assuming it is a long article)... hope that's OK. --Jp07 (talk) 19:47, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh ya, it's pretty long. No problem, I've been taking a relaxed attitude since November when it failed the first FA, please let me know when you're done. Thanks! :)
Talk 20:03, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply
]
I just wanted to let you know that I've started looking over the article. My Internet is running crazy slow and it is getting late, so I'm going to go ahead and call it a night. I have only made it through the first paragraph, but I have made a lot of changes. If you have a moment to look at what I have changed, to get an idea of my writing style, I would appreciate it--I don't want you to think I've made the whole thing uglier once I'm done. Fair warning: I'm going to be a brutal editor since you're nominating it for FA, so I hope that you won't get offended... I've explained all of my edits, and left a few internal notes, so that even if you don't like the way I chose to fix it, I have at least pointed out what I feel is a "problem" so that you can fix it differently if you choose. The biggest problems I have found so far are passive voice and lacking clarity caused by misplaced/dangling modifiers. If you have a chance in the next day or so to go through the article to fix any additional clarity issues I would appreciate it--I am totally unfamiliar with this topic and I don't want to restructure the sentence in a way that makes the claim incorrect. I will try to get through the whole thing in the next 48 hours. Sorry about the wait.--Jp07 (talk) 06:33, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The wait is not a problem, and don't worry, I know I'm not the best person when it comes to grammar, so I won't be offended. Do you want me to start a sandbox type page for all this conversation, or do you not mind your talk page being filled up? I've added 2009 for the mayor sentence. As far as this suggestion, I agree the sentence is a run-on and too long. Should I put it into 2 sentences, or remove all the other cities that make up the Quad Cities? Also, "Davenport is located by the Mississippi river", do you think by is more appropriate then on the river, or on the banks of the river? To me, "by" just means it is close by, but doesn't really say the city is on the river. I very much appreciate your help in helping me get this up to FA status, thank you very much! Also, I have you on my watchlist, so I'll see when you reply :)

Amador Valley High School

Hi JP,

Thank you for finding Amador Valley High School and leaving your comments on the peer review. I've updated the lead to meet your concerns, and I find the new version clearer and more consistent. Nintendo task force membership update

It's that time again to update membership status with the

Nintendo task force
, which we try to do every 3-4 months to keep our membership up-to-date.

All participants have been placed on an "Inactive participants" list. To confirm that you're still a member of the Nintendo task force, simply go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Nintendo#Members and move your name from the "Inactive participants" list to the bottom of the "Active participants" list. If you are no longer an active member in the task force, you may simply remove your name altogether. After 1 month, on October 1, all entries under the "Inactive participants" list will be removed. Hopefully you can stay with us and continue to work on Nintendo-related articles. Regards, MuZemike 17:53, 1 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

peer review

I've spent the past six weeks overhauling the

list of users willing to copy edit articles. I would appreciate your feedback. Be forewarned that this is a long article. Not including refs/external links, templates, and categories it's 7 pages printed. If you accept my invitation to review you may want to print it first and make your edits that way. I found it easier to read and to correct when I did this. Although long, it makes for a good read during a lunch break, a bus ride, or pure boredom. I learned a lot myself while rewriting this article. If you like to learn, this could be an incentive for you. Gbern3 (talk) 17:20, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply

All members have currently been placed in the "Inactive" section by default. Please remove your username from the "Inactive" listing and place it under the "Active" listing if you plan on regularly:

Copyediting help? History of the GBA

Hi,

I saw you listed as one of the volunteers for copyediting and was hoping for some help if you have the time and inclination. History of the Galveston Bay Area is currently on-hold in GA review. The biggest concern is poor writing. I was hoping for a fresh pair of eyes to look at the article and help clean it up. Mind you, this is only GA, not FA so it does not have to be a thorough polishing.

If you have the time to help it would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Always ignore the Manual of Style

Always ignore any rule which interferes with writing the encyclopedia
; that's policy.

This goes double for the "Manual of Style", which has been compiled by a handful of editors who want such valuable powers as forbidding everybody from using "high school teacher". See the end of this post.

Mind you, if you want to help clean it up, you will always be welcome; but I cannot advise it. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 18:37, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah... I don't like that. I don't see the point in having a manual of style if you can ignore it spontaneously. And that will create edit wars because no one knows what the policy really is; you have one rule saying "do this" and another rule saying "do whatever you want." Mixed messages?--Jp07 (talk) 18:55, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
We have edit wars with a Manual of Style that says "do this," and because of it. When what it says to do makes no sense, most editors do ignore it; sometimes one of the
WP:FRINGE
editors comes along and has a snit-fit about how people are "disrespecting MOS," and "subversive," and revert-wars until the people actually writing the encyclopedia get tired of it, or protest and are ignored.
Sometimes the MOS says "there are two ways to do this, and it doesn't vitally matter which; just pick one"; I've seen revert wars stop when the section was referred to. People actually say "Oh, I didn't know there were two" and pick one. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 00:39, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE drive newsletter

Invitation from the
Guild of Copy Editors

The

Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their November 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on November 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on November 30 at 23:59 (UTC). We will be tracking the number of 2010 articles (and specifically will be targeting the oldest three months), as we want to copy edit as many of these as possible. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02, and SMasters

Upcoming Wikimedia events in Missouri and Kansas!

You're invited to 3 exciting events Wikipedians are planning in your region this June—a

:

Kansas City
Saturday, June 16, starting at 9 a.m.National Archives in Kansas City
  • This full-day event will include a tour of the facility; presentations from National Archives Wikipedian-in-Residence, Dominic McDevitt-Parks, and Exhibit Specialist, Dee Harris; and time in the research room to work on projects. The focus of the projects will be scanning, writing articles, transcribing, or categorizing images on Commons.

Wikipedians from St. Louis and elsewhere in the region are encouraged to make a day-trip of it and come to Kansas City for this special opportunity!

And two local editions of the Great American Wiknic, the "picnic anyone can edit." Come meet (and geek out with, if you want) your local Wikipedians in a laid-back atmosphere:

Wichita
Saturday, June 23, starting at 1 p.m. — Central Riverside Park
  • Join the 1st annual Wichita Wiknic: The Sunflower State blooms Free Knowledge!
St. Louis
Saturday, June 23, starting at 11 a.m. — Forest Park Visitors' Center
  • Join the 2nd annual St Louis Wiknic: The Gateway to the West is now The Gateway to the Wiki!

Articles for Creation Appeal

Articles for Creation is backlogged and needs YOUR help!

Articles for Creation is desperately in need of reviewers! We are looking for urgent help, from experienced editors and administrators alike, to help us clear a record backlog of pending submissions. There is currently a significant backlog of 2389 submissions waiting to be reviewed. These submissions are generally from new editors who have never edited Wikipedia before. A prompt, constructive review of submissions could significantly editor retention.

Do you have what it takes?
  1. Are you familiar with
    Wikipedia's policies and guidelines
    ?
  2. Do you know what Wikipedia is and is not?
  3. Do you have a working knowledge of the Manual of Style, particularly article naming conventions?
  4. Are you (at least)
    autoconfirmed
    ?
  5. Can you review submissions based on their individual merits?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then please read the reviewing instructions and donate a little of your time to helping tackle the backlog.

Click here to review to a random submissionArticle selected by erwin85's random article script on toolserver.

We would greatly appreciate your help. Currently, only a small handful of users are reviewing articles. Any help, even if it's just 1 or 2 reviews, would be extremely beneficial.

On behalf of the Articles for Creation project,

Wikiproject Kansas

Hi there, writing to you because you are a member of the wikiproject kansas. created a GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) group for kansas, mailing list for topeka and a facebook page linked from here Wikipedia:Meetup/Topeka. would like to organize some more meetups at different historic sites in topeka (and even other places if we can find someone with a car), go there and take photos, collect information and work on the articles. It could be a great group event. please let me know what you think, and sign up on the mailing list if you like. Also if you know of GLAM sites anywhere in kansas, please add them to the list. Also I would like to organize a photo contest for Kansas. you can send me a mail if you like as well, my mail is on my user page.

thanks, James Michael DuPont (talk) 14:07, 9 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WP:FOOD
Needs You!

Hi there Jp07! I've noticed you have yourself listed as a

Food and Drink Wikiproject
. Unfortunately it looks like the project has been slowly sliding into inactivity except for a couple of people. That makes me a sad potato, and nobody likes a sad potato amirite?

If you'd like to turn my frown upside down, can you do two small things?

First off, go

here and add {{Tick
}} (checkY) next to your name if you're still part of the project.

Second, go to the project talkpage and participate in a discussion about how to make the project more active, and how to go about making articles in our area of interest a lot better.

You don't want to make me cry, do you? Potatoes have a lot of eyes you know. So come on, join in! :)

Requesting your opinion on a photo

Hi. We really need your opinion on which of these photos would make the best Infobox portrait for the Rick Remender article. Could you please offer your opinion in that discussion? The most recent subsection of that discussion is here, so you can just chime in there if you don't want to read the whole thread. I really appreciate it. Thanks. Please join the discussion on Talk:Glengarry Glen Ross (film)

Hello! I am soliciting comments for an RfC that is currently open on the "Glengarry Glen Ross (film)" page. There is disagreement about where the film was set (New York vs. Chicago).

One of the issues is whether it is

original research
to cite to elements in the film itself (including props, dialogue, and a statement in the end credits that it was "filmed on location in New York City") to establish setting.

Response so far in the RfC has been mixed. Comments welcome! Xanthis (talk) 13:17, 9 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Please comment on VP proposal: Creation of Wikipedia style noticeboard

There is talk at the village pump about creating a noticeboard similar to WP:NPOVN and WP:RSN for style issues. Right now, people tend to bring their style questions to WT:MoS and other talk pages: [1] [2]. They do not much disrupt business there, but there is some concern that people may not know where to go to get a clear answer about Wikipedia's policies regarding punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and other style issues. Proponents of the measure say that a noticeboard would be easier for people to find. Opponents of the measure argue that such a style board might facilitate forum shopping and drama. Your contribution would be welcome The proposal itself is at the Village Pump. A mockup of the style noticeboard is here. Darkfrog24 (talk) 01:15, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Would like your thoughts on Talk:Fa La La (album)

It looks like you get a lot of requests. You can ignore this one if you wish, but I am hoping to get some more editors invovlved. At steak is whether or not this album should exist as a standalone article or should be allowed to be converted into a redirect to the artist. Please consider checking it out if you get a moment. Much appreciated. Oh, and I chose you randomly, in case you were wondering. Am looking forward to your response on the talk page I mentioned. Thanks! KDS4444Talk 22:39, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback Request Service
, but you haven't made any edits to the English Wikipedia in over three years.

In order to declutter the Feedback Request Service list, and to produce a greater chance of active users being randomly selected to receive invitations to contribute, you've been unsubscribed, along with all other users who have made no edits in three years or more.

You do not need to do anything about this - if you are happy to not receive Feedback Request Service messages, thank you very much for your contributions in the past, and this will be the last you hear from the service. If, however, you would like to resubscribe yourself, you can follow the below instructions to do so:

  1. Go to the
    Feedback Request Service page
    .
  2. Decide which categories are of interest to you, under the
    GA
    headings.
  3. Paste {{Frs user|{{subst:currentuser}}|limit}} underneath the relevant heading(s), where limit is the maximum number of requests you wish to receive for that category per month.
  4. Publish the page.

If you've just come back after a wikibreak and are seeing this message, welcome back! You can follow the above instructions to re-activate your subscription. Likewise, if this is an alternate account, please consider subscribing your main account in much the same way.

Note that if you had a rename and left your old name on the FRS page, you may be receiving this message. If so, make sure your new account name is on the FRS list instead.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask on

the Feedback Request Service talk page, or on the Feedback Request Service bot's operator's talk page. Thank you! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:26, 27 May 2020 (UTC)[reply
