DYK for August 2014 United States floods

On 9 November 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article August 2014 United States floods, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that multiple rainfall records were set across several states during the August 2014 United States floods, including in Michigan, Maine, and New York? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/August 2014 United States floods. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, August 2014 United States floods), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

RfA

So...I've only voted at one RfA because I've only come across that one person whilst editing. All these RfA's and I've not seen your name there yet (as a candidate). I think you need to apply so I can obtain more experience of the voting system. This seems like a suitable reason for you applying, right? 🙃 Knitsey (talk) 18:37, 8 November 2023 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) While I cannot speak for Tails, I've heard that RFA is an extremely difficult and stressful process, and self-noms aren't exactly easy (From what I've seen). Maybe you should try and familiarize yourself with some of the other editors, especially ones that may end up becoming admins ;) ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 19:21, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
I do think I will be running sometime soon for adminship, though it'll depend on how busy I will be IRL, etc. And as Blaze states above, it is an extremely difficult and stressful process, so that'll be an interesting factor prior to running. And I am not self-nominating myself, unlike what Blaze said.
And the answer to your question, Knitsey: no! Tails Wx 19:28, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
I wasn't thinking you'd self-nom. That simply seemed to be what KNitsey was suggesting. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 19:29, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
Not self nom (though I realise now it reads that way), I think you have people who will nominate you.
It's my (maybe not so) jokey way of asking if you're going for it Tails. I hope you do at some point. Knitsey (talk) 19:34, 8 November 2023 (UTC)

I had given thought at going for an optional poll, but then backed off from the idea given that I have already received advice and feedback off-wiki even though I am able to receive additional feedback from there. And BTW, here's my first attempt at an ORCP a year ago here. I take my first ORCP as a learning experience, not a failing point. :) Tails Wx 02:02, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
I've just read it and while the comments sounded very harsh, those were strong advices and I do understand becoming an admin is not an easy process. While I mostly focus on anti-vandalism work and sometimes participate around other parts of Wikipedia, I should probably step up my game with writing articles, as I haven't nominated any good articles or DYKs. 🛧Midori No Sora♪🛪 ( ☁=☁=✈) 03:24, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
I concur that becoming an administrator is definitely not an easy process, as it takes a lot of trust and responsibility into being one. Now, time to read RfA guides...
Good plans; I'm hopeful you will have a GA or DYK nomination soon! Tails Wx 03:34, 9 November 2023 (UTC)

Is this source reliable?

Hey there @Tails Wx, and as an experienced editor, it's weird for me to ask a question but, is this website about aviation a reliable source? I'm trying to find a source in English and this is the best one I can find. 🛧Midori No Sora♪🛪 ( ☁=☁=✈) 11:44, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) – @Midori No Sora: as Tails is probably asleep, I'll see if I can help. From a quick glance, Airways Magazine (see Airways News) looks pretty reliable from their website: established almost 30 years ago, has a solid editorial structure, circulation in around 60 countries, last commercial aviation magazine in North America. Although I'm not very familiar with the subject area, it seems like this would be a generally reliable source. Schminnte [talk to me] 12:01, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Question Regarding the Notability of Sources in Draft:The Governor's School @ Innovation Park

Hello @Tails Wx,

I have drafted and submitted the article

WP:NSCHOOL
criteria. You were the one who declined my submission on November 5, 2023. I am unsure of which criteria is not being met in the current draft. Can you please give me a summary of what specifically is missing from the article/references?

Thank you, Btdbhacker Btdbhacker (talk) 15:02, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi, @Btdbhacker! NSCHOOL reads:
All universities, colleges and schools, including high schools, middle schools, primary (elementary) schools, and schools that only provide a support to mainstream education must either satisfy the notability guidelines for organizations (i.e., this page), the general notability guideline, or both.
The
primary criteria for notability guidelines for organizations
reads:
A company, corporation, organization, group, product, or service is presumed notable if it has been the subject of significant coverage in multiple, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject.
In its current state, the draft does not satisfy the guidelines stated above. However, references 6, 7, and 8 in the draft look like a good start for notability. The other references, including this, are trivial mentions and not significant coverage. Please continue to improve the draft! Tails Wx 15:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from GidiD (11:33, 20 November 2023)

Hello Tails. I have been working on Wikipedia content in good faith for several weeks now. I feel I m being harassed by a fellow Wikipedian Iskandar323. It is the second time he files a complaint about me to administrators (or at least it seems so). Yesterday I reverted an edit on Israel, and immediately I got his message (see below). This is in spite of the fact that there were several reverts on the same page from other users.

I m not here to fight such battles. Please advise. GidiD (talk) 11:33, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

Draft:Buddhika Jayaratne

Hi @Tails Wx, Thank you for the review and your provided comments.

However, I find it challenging to agree with your assessment that the article lacks significant coverage. According to the Wikipedia: WikiProject Articles for Creation/Reviewing instructions, if the submission adheres to notability guidelines, such as asserting a significant award, it can be recognized as a Wiki-worthy subject as long as it provides reliable references from secondary sources.

According to the general notability guidelines for creative professionals (artists) on Wikipedia, individuals can be considered notable if they have created or played a major role in co-creating a significant or well-known work or body of work. Additionally, such work must have been the primary subject of multiple independent periodical articles or reviews or of an independent and notable work (e.g., a book, film, or television series, but usually not a single episode of a television series). As seen in my article, the subject has contributed significantly to 31 films and 13 television series, including international films, and has won four awards in recognition of their work in the field.

I acknowledge that I was unable to provide citations for those awards initially, but after consulting the previous reviewers and experts at the Wiki Help Desk, I have improved my draft by including mainstream newspaper articles featuring the award ceremonies along with mentions of the subject as a recipient of the respective awards. However, some of these articles are not in English, and you would need to be able to read Sinhala to refer to them.

Furthermore, I checked some existing Wiki pages of people in the same genre, such as Bimal Jayakody, and I believe I have now provided sufficient grounds to establish the notability of the subject.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could advise me on how to further improve the article to ensure its recognition as a Wiki article.

Thank you. Manike23 (talk) 14:34, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

Hello, @
WP:NBASIC, in its current state. People are presumed notable if they have received significant coverage in multiple, published, secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject. Thus, the references in the draft do not establish notability of the subject. For example, the first four references in the draft are not in-depth coverage, and do not establish notability. It may be used to support content in the draft, however, such as the filmography section. Feel free to ask additional questions regarding the notability of the subject! Tails Wx
16:48, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply, @Tails Wx.
Yes, when the draft was declined at first, I have added a few additional sources, independent blogs etc., to establish the notability/recognition the subject received in the field, ie. the first four references, which I now understand are irrelevant to support my case.
However, I believe the evidence I have provided on the awards can be considered as "secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject" and sufficient to establish that the subject received such awards. I have given two (2) mainstream and independent news publications Sarasaviya, Dinamina, as well as the officil website of the awarding body, Sumathi, to establish that the subject has recognised for his work in recognised awarding bodies in Sri Lanka. As I mentioned in my previous message I used Bimal Jayakody's Wiki page as the benchmark, as both actors are in the same caliber and has fairly equal recognition in Sri Lanka as actors.
But I understand that some useful references can be buried under the irrelevant ones. How about, if I review and clean the draft of such and also try to add more reference if possible and update you, so you can have a second look and advise me on the way forward?
Much appreciate your guidance and support.
Thank you for your time. Manike23 (talk) 06:39, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
Hi again, @Tails Wx,
Following are a two more Wiki pages of Sri Lankan actors of the same genre, as Buddhika Jayaratne. Channa Perera and Roshan Ravindra and as you can see those pages have not provided enough evidence to prove the claims of recipient of awards. So, I don't know what I'm doing wrong in my draft. Please help me. Thank you. Manike23 (talk) 06:57, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
Hello, @
significant coverage of the subject, even if independent, and not trivial or passing mentions of the subject. For example, the Sarasaviya reference you mentioned is a passing mention of the subject, and not significant coverage. Tails Wx
14:38, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
Hello @Tails Wx
Thank you for your response. What I intended to convey is that, across all three pages (Bimal Jayakody, Roshan Ravindra, and Channa Perera), there’s no evidence proving that the subject received the mentioned award, aside from media coverage of the specific event with passing mentions of the subjects. Additionally, note that none of these actors has participated in any international productions and yet considered as worthy of inclusion in the Wikipedia encyclopedia.
I’m seeking clarification on what would qualify as ‘significant coverage.’ The reference example you highlighted, the mention of the subject in the Sarasaviya paper proves that the subject received the respective awards, and can be recognized as independent source, isn't that correct or am I missing something here.
If you could please point out one or two instances in the Wiki pages of Bimal Jayakody, Roshan Ravindra, and Channa Perera that can be considered as providing significant coverage to the respective subjects, would greatly help me update my draft accordingly.
Please help me out.
Thank you. Much appreciate it. 2001:8003:EC02:DC01:B536:65BC:5914:3663 (talk) 21:03, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
Hello. Here's an example of significant coverage on Channa Perera: Sunday Times. The source I mentioned above is an example of what is not significant coverage, but that reference supports the content noted in the draft. The draft's subject can establish notability if there is significant coverage, in independent sources. Significant coverage is not passing nor trivial mentions. Tails Wx 02:31, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you, @Tails Wx
The example you have given is an interview of Channa Perera, published to announce of his new film. So, if the reference article supports what's in the draft, it can be used to establish the notability of the subject, right?
With that background, I wonder how some of the reference articles I have provided, for example Deshaya, Sunday Times, Sarasaviya cannot be considered as sources that establish notability of Buddhika Jayaratne and support the content mentioned in the draft.
But I understand that there are some irrelevant references crowded the draft (the first four references as you have mentioned at the beginning of this conversation), I will try to edit the draft, cleaning and adding more suitable references.
Would you mind have a look at once it's done and give your feedback?
Much appreciate your time and support. Thank you. Manike23 (talk) 04:40, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Hello, @Manike23. Notability of the subject can be established if the references in the draft has significant coverage, and not passing nor trivial mentions, and are independent and secondary. See my decline reason on the draft page.
Regarding the sources you linked above as to how those do not establish notability, I'll explain how they do not establish notability.
  • Deshaya source: This source does not have significant coverage of the subject and is an interview, which is not an independent source. Fails to establish notability.
  • Sunday Times source: This is a
    routine
announcement and does not establish notability.
  • Sarasaviya source: This source is an interview and is not considered an independent source. Thus, fails to establish notability.
However, the three sources above can support content in the draft. Once the draft is submitted, I'll recuse myself from reviewing the draft, though I'll take a look. Tails Wx 19:27, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you, @Tails Wx, for the further clarification.
I am learning a lot from this conversation with you, and I very much appreciate your patients and support.
However, I still do not understand why Channa Perera's Sunday Times (the example you provided above) is not considered a routine and independent announcement, while Buddhika Jayaratne's Sunday Times source source is deemed routine and not independent. Both articles, featuring Channa and Buddhika, respectively, use the names of the subjects to announce their directorial ventures. They also provide essential information about the production and quote the opinions of the subjects. To date, I haven't encountered different formats of articles in the Wiki pages of benchmark subjects like Bimal Jayakody, Roshan Ravindra, and Channa Perera.
Anyhow, I will clean and update my draft and share for your feedback.
Thank you so much. Manike23 (talk) 02:16, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
Hello, @Manike23. The Sunday Times source from Channa Perera is, IMO, routine. That's because it's just a signing for the film to be launched as a joint-production film. Routine coverage, however, does not disqualify notability of the subject, and may even be significant enough to surpass notability guidelines. See Wikipedia:What is and is not routine coverage. Meanwhile, the Sunday Times source from Buddhika Jayaratne is independent and is routine, as it's an announcement about a role for him. That source itself will not establish notability, however. Tails Wx 03:05, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you, @Tails Wx.
I have given Sunday Times source from Buddhika Jayaratne as one example only, and I understand that the particular source itself is not sufficient to establish notability, thus I have given as array of sources. However, what I don't understand is how come Channa Perera's page got approved as a suitable wiki page considering the references provided in the page. This applies to the other two pagers I have mentioned prior.
Anyhow, I will edit the draft as per your advice and guidance provided and share for your feedback.
Thank you. Manike23 (talk) 03:24, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
WP:NBASIC, per the references in those three articles. The subject of your draft, per the references in the draft, do not pass notability guidelines, as stated above. Tails Wx
03:27, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
@Tails Wx, I'll redo the draft accordingly and share with you. Thanks. Manike23 (talk) 03:30, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on

Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)
