There are two major exceptions to linking stuff, though. (1) Files/Images and (2) Categories.
To give a safe example:
Typing [[Category:Wikipedians who enjoy life]] onto this page appears like so:
However, I can just place a colon to fix it: [[:Category:Wikipedians who enjoy life]] --> Category:Wikipedians who enjoy life.

Regarding your recent edits to the Bibliography of World War II page, please revert the format of the books you added to match those listed (Chicago-Turabian Style). You added the books as though they would be cited in the text of the article (which would normally be the right way to add them), but since this is a LIST of books, we don't need them in reference format. @Wikiuser100, RexxS, Cuchullain, Andy Dingley, Alanscottwalker, Favonian, and Oldperson: Hello, I'm relatively new (30 September 2019) on Wikipedia and was hoping to get some advice from people with more experience on the proper way to deal with something so it doesn't become a problem. It's my understanding that when disagreements like this arise you should discuss them with the community so I'm trying to start the discussion.

I've encountered a user named Dilidor that seems like they want to start a fight over edits. I saw your names on their talk page, so I'm hoping for some input. You can see my edits and his reverts on the page James Otis Jr.. I asked him about it on his talk page User talk:Dilidor and answered his concern. He left a reply to me with some additional "demands" regarding changes I need to make to satisfy him on the article talk page Talk:James Otis Jr. and sprinkled in some insults. Their comments seem like they are looking to start an edit war (which I don't want any part of) and their tone seems hostile and accusatory.

"Hostile"? Dilidor? Surely not! But good citations go a long way to defusing such complaints. Remember that multiple citations to the same source are a useful technique and although often not needed, if another editor insists on citing every sentence individually, then provide them. My experience has been the direct opposite - a total nightmare of insults, bullying, intransigence, and edit warring. (Which I just walked away from, temporarily, because it wasn't worth my time to look up all the templates that apply to those Wikipedia

civility violations and slap them on their talk page and at the Pilgrims (Plymouth Colony) talk page where some of their antics are on display.) I stand by every statement made in my response to their claims here

. It is a shame that no administrator stopped by to sort them out. They badly need it.

@Oldperson, Wikiuser100, and Andy Dingley: Thanks Wikiuser100 and Andy :) When I first interacted with him, I assumed he was just having a bad moment and a polite reply would set things right. After the second interaction, I took a look at his talk page and received some clarity on what was occurring. Andy was using a little sarcasm above as he's had similar unfortunate interactions. I also saw the abuse User:Oldperson received from him (as well as others). As for our disagreement, I left a civil but direct response on Talk:James Otis Jr.

With all the disruption and negativity he's spread, I'm surprised Wikipedia admins have let this go on for so long. In my short time here, the enjoyment I've had has come from interacting with nice people on topics we have a shared interest in. So three users here – two of them representing some 200,000 edits and just short of 25 years combined Wikipedia experience – have received the same sort of bullying, uncivil, and disruptive behavior from User Dilidor. Since they are just insulting me, repeating themselves and reverting and I don't want an edit war I'm wondering what the next step I should take is. I believe that I'm supposed to try and get more people involved in the discussion before posting to dispute resolution. CaptainEek, Robert McClenon and Rosguill I saw your names on the dispute resolution board and Slim Virgin and Drmies helped me recently, thought you all might be able to help. I agree with Wikiuser100's comments above.

Can you actually do what they demand? The contentious piece here seems to be "he burned his papers". How do you know this? Can you use that as a source? Even if it's already a source, add a further cite to this sentence (yes, even if a duplicate).

Hi @CaptainEek:, thanks you for your help. James Otis Jr was a significant historical writer and figure in the early American Revolution. Near the end of his life, he burned his papers. I added this fact with a citation from the Smithsonian. I added this information/citation to the article James Otis Jr..

Here is the diff: [1] and the discussion on his talk page: [2]

Dildor first reverted it stating it was not in the citation. I pointed out the information in the cited work and added the fact that he burned his papers back in. I thought this would be the end of the matter.

Dildor left new "demands" here [3], I replied to their comments. Then they repeated their original comments and reverted again without allowing for discussion or adding improvements.

Ive added another citation and expanded on what I thought was self-explanatory here: [4] (current version) after advice from Andy, but I think without input from others the problem will continue.

It seems to me like they are just dictating and not discussing, just reverting facts and citations and not offering improvements. The personal insults and accusations are also unnecessary. I think someone should address this as it violates

WP:CIVIL

@Robert McClenon and CaptainEek: I just noticed Dildor removed a biography (by Tudor, William) I added to Further Reading without any explanation and reinserted a duplicate journal entry (author Ferguson, James) I have removed (so it was only listed once). I had also added in the issue number for the journal entry and this was removed as well. Here is the diff: [5]. No idea why they would want the journal entry listed twice or felt it necessary to remove the issue number other than to be disruptive. @User:TimothyBlue. There are both content and conduct issues at play here, just as they were in my parallel experience of disruptive and uncivil editing waged by Dilidor (linked to above here).

I was wrong earlier. There are not just two, but three administrators on your original list of editors you sought to engage for advice on this issue: User:Cuchullain (since 2007); User:Favonian (since 2010); and User:RexxS (since 2019). It would be more than appropriate for them to engage at this point, and decide which will take the lead in sorting out this chronically difficult and offensive user.

He's clearly trying to provoke me into a fight or edit war. Perhaps he is just trying to drive people away. I'm not taking his bait. I do hope an admin looks at his entire conduct history and well as this incident.

Drama on the high seas, or the Orient Express. FWIW. So I have made peace with him, of a sorts, I don' mess with "his" edits, he doesn't mess with mine. Dilidor is an experienced editor, a ghost writer with over 30 years experience, and when he isn't emotionally involved in a subject or article, a damn good editor. I appreciate his talents and contributions. However I fault his edit summaries, as they are insulting. When he edits good faith edits he often makes comments like 'cleaning up this nonsense", which is an insult to an erstwhile good faith editor. he also appears to be overly invested emotionally in the Puritans, New England, their wars with Native Americans and Rhode Island, as if he had ownership of this subjects (articles). When I encounter emotional investment in an article with an editor (or two) my antenna go up (or would if I were Marty the Martian). What you describe, User:Oldperson, are clear, flagrant, willful, recidivist, baiting, and unpunished violations of Wikipedia civility standards, which both fragile but good faith new and highly experienced veteran editors are wantonly being exposed to while patiently seeking administrator intervention.

There are three on this string alone – User:Cuchullain, User:Favonian; and User:RexxS. Why are they willfully refusing to be involved when their assistance has been repeatedly requested?

What is the point of these good faith efforts by User:TimothyBlue if he is going to be ignored by administrators and just told by other editors, “Sure, Dilidor’s a jerk, and absolutely knows better. I never begin hostilities with any editor. If someone posts a polite and civil question, I respond in kind. If you all will please take a moment and re-read all the above rhetoric—and do so with a genuine spirit of neutrality—you will see a good deal of hostility, sarcasm, and straight-out attacks in your own words. I will cite only one, and it the most recent example: "Sure, Dilidor’s a jerk, and absolutely knows better." If you're hoping to rebuke me for what you perceive as a verbal attack—well, you might want to consider not making a verbal attack yourself. I will point out that every single snide comment above was made, not in response to something I've said, but in attack against me. I have not said a single word in this thread, yet I could go through and enumerate a good many examples of verbal attack against me. You persistently claim how good and experienced an editor you are, but the obverse of that is your endless dismissal of all other editors with whom you cross swords. This is not acceptable. You have been warned repeatedly for it, but yet you still do it. You might even be right on some of these issues: yes, "he burned all his papers" obviously needs to be sourced, as per usual. But a better wiki editor could explain this, you instead demand it. We, as a community, would be better off without you here: we would lose the benefit of your editing skills, but we'd also lose the abuse. I know which I'd prefer. Having merely exhausted the energy of other editors is not their acceptance of your editing style, merely tiredness. I'm with Regulov on this one: either follow the MOS or get it changed, but don't just keep deliberately ignoring it because you're right and it's wrong (maybe you are right, but the place for that is at the MOS, not in the articles). I want to underline TimothyBlue and Oldperson's withdrawal from conflict. This is how editors like Dilidor get their way. People decide they'd rather not be browbeaten, or anyway the game isn't worth the candle. I had a skirmish with Dilidor over at Plymouth Rock over several commas. I believe, though I cannot prove, that on June 3 Dilidor used a sock puppet to make two very showily destructive edits to the page, waited a few hours, and then smuggled a reversion of my edits in with the removal of the "vandalism". I doubt this is the only time Dilidor has gone to such lengths. A scant two weeks later, I find myself making the same arguments at another page. It is true that Dilidor is defensive and threatening, and not very collegial; for my part, I am more concerned to find a way to impress upon Dilidor the importance of adhering to the rules even where one disagrees with them. I would prefer not to have to have the same tedious struggle over the parenthetical comma again and again. Regulov (talk) 18:14, 10 December 2019 (UTC)

(edit conflict) @Wikiuser100: the problem with taking administrative action against an abusive editor like Dilidor is that if you've already been involved in a dispute with them – see their talkpage and the article talk page for mine – they will scream "admin abuse", and then you get to be the one in the dock, for talking action that any uninvolved admin wouldn't think twice about. That's the catch-22; any admin who's been the target of Dilidor's abuse and is aware of it is putatively "involved" and unable to take admin action. The wiki is a big place, and lots of things happen with hardly anybody seeing them, so your perception of the situation is accurate. Usually these issues get resolved when an uninvolved admin notices what's been going on and applies sanctions, or it eventually ends up at ANI with a similar result. I saw that you tagged this user page for speedy deletion but there was no mention alerting the page creator that their page had been tagged. Please set up your Twinkle preferences so that this notification is always placed on an editor's talk page. It's very important that editors know what happened to the pages they create when there is a possibility that they will be deleted.

In the Twinkle Preferences, you have to make sure ALL types of CSD are checked. It allows you to only notify page creators for some kinds of tagging but it really should be all categories of CSD. Thank you. Liz ^{Read! Talk!} 03:45, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

@TimothyBlue & @Fastily I was the host of an Edit-a-thon and General MB Mkhavele just created an account and did anything else (not a single edit)- just logged in with a user name! I read and know the reasons for speedy deletion and even under Criteria U5 it says: "In general, other users' user pages are managed by that user. Except for blatant or serious matters, it is preferable to try contacting the user before deletion". You did neither contact the user nor do I see any reason why you deleted the page. We did continue on a different user name, but I really don't see the point for deletion and I do expect a feasible answer otherwise I do contact another administrator for clarification. Thankful for an explanation in advance, because if I do know why, I can avoid as a host and organizer future situations like these. --Elena Patrise (talk) 18:57, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Elena Patrise: If there was an error I apologize. I think Fastily still has access to the old page and can check, if there was an error I believe the page can be restored. While I cannot see the deleted page anymore, if my memory is correct it was "because the page appears to consist of writings, information, discussions, and/or activities not closely related to Wikipedia's goals." There is leeway here but if all that was on the userpage was information about the user and their interests outside of Wikipedia and none about their Wikipedia interests/goals etc. (such as being a part of an edit-a-thon and the articles/topics they were interested in editing), that would qualify under U5.

• Re: "You did neither contact the user nor do I see any reason why you deleted the page." Please see their talk page where a message was left with the reason before it was deleted. It also includes a link to "Contest this speedy deletion".
• Re: "We did continue on a different user name" the account was not deleted, just the page. The user could have continued editing under this account and the userpage could have been recreated.

The Editing team is nearly finished with this first phase of the Talk pages project. Nearly all new features are available now in the Beta Feature for Discussion tools.

It will show information about how active a discussion is, such as the date of the most recent comment. There will soon be a new "Add topic" button. You will be able to turn them off at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion. Please tell them what you think.

An A/B test for Discussion tools on the mobile site has finished. Editors were more successful with Discussion tools. The Editing team is enabling these features for all editors on the mobile site.

New Project: Edit Check

The Editing team is beginning a project to help new editors of Wikipedia. It will help people identify some problems before they click "Publish changes". The first tool will encourage people to add references when they add new content. Please watch that page for more information. You can join a conference call on 3 March 2023 to learn more.

We wish you all happy copy-editing. Election results: In our December 2022 coordinator election, Reidgreg and Tenryuu stepped down as coordinators; we thank them for their service. Incumbents Baffle gab1978, Dhtwiki, Miniapolis and Zippybonzo were returned as coordinators until 1 July. For the second time, no lead coordinator was chosen. Nominations for our mid-year Election of Coordinators open on 1 June (UTC). Drive: 21 editors signed up for our January Backlog Elimination Drive, 14 of whom claimed at least one copy-edit. Between them, they copy-edited 170 articles totaling 389,737 words. Barnstars awarded are here. Blitz: Our February Copy Editing Blitz focused on October and November 2022 requests, and the March and April 2022 backlogs. Of the 14 editors who signed up, nine claimed at least one copy-edit; and between them, they copy-edited 39,150 words in 22 articles. Barnstars awarded are here. Drive: Sign up now for our month-long March Backlog Elimination Drive. Barnstars awarded will be posted here after the drive closes. Thanks for cleaning out Indosiar - even though I used to be in one of the shows in the deleted edits :-) The articles for most Indonesian TV stations are a bit of a shambles, but many members of the Indonesia Project - me included - are having trouble motivating ourselves to get bogged down in fixing them. I got this message saying my edits to correct the spelling of names in the page about Volodymyr the Great were not approved. I found this surprising, given that the official Ukrainian spellings are Kyiv and Volodymyr, and that English-language media are using those now. Would you be so kind as to tell me why the edits were not accepted?

Hi Robert, I mean you could have found consensus for a solution if the parties you were working with had been acting in good faith. I think they were wasting your time (I think someone said gaming the system). Frankly editors like you with the skill and willingness to mediate disputes time is valuable and should be appreciated; it’s always irritating seeing good time intentionally wasted by those NOTHERE.
