Recent changes

  • The system for automatically creating categories for the Babel extension has had several important changes and fixes. One of them allows you to insert templates for automatic category descriptions on creation, allowing you to categorize the new categories. [1][2][3][4][5]

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 4 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 5 April. It will be on all wikis from 6 April (calendar).
  • Some older Web browsers will stop being able to use JavaScript on Wikimedia wikis from this week. This mainly affects users of Internet Explorer 11. If you have an old web browser on your computer you can try to upgrade to a newer version. [6]
  • The deprecated jquery.hoverIntent module has been removed. This module could be used by gadgets and user scripts, to create an artificial delay in how JavaScript responds to a hover event. Gadgets and user scripts should now use jQuery hover() or on() instead. Examples can be found in the migration guide. [7]
  • Some of the links in Special:SpecialPages will be re-arranged. There will be a clearer separation between links that relate to all users, and links related to your own user account. [8]
  • You will be able to hide the Reply button in archived discussion pages with a new __ARCHIVEDTALK__ magic word. There will also be a new .mw-archivedtalk CSS class for hiding the Reply button in individual sections on a page. [9][10][11]

Future changes

  • The Vega software that creates data visualizations in pages, such as graphs, will be upgraded to the newest version in the future. Graphs that still use the very old version 1.5 syntax may stop working properly. Most existing uses have been found and updated, but you can help to check, and to update any local documentation. Examples of how to find and fix these graphs are available.

Mozart. I like the links to List of compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Mozart family. I think that is a clever way to accommodate the concern some editors have that infoboxes present incomplete or decontextualized information. It points readers to more detailed information and avoids the need to pick-and-choose what compositions to feature (for example). In some ways, it's almost like it serves as a navigation box for the Mozart topic, pointing out related articles that may be more relevant to readers. — Wug·a·po·des

Yes, vacation was great, and more pics to follow. Yes, a clever way. Something like this was added by Brian Boulton to his featured article Percy Grainger, in 2013, and to Beethoven in 2015, as the community consensus, by the arb who had written the infoboxes case, where I had proposed it, - my favourite edit, I felt so forgiven! - I wrote a little history, - admittedly as a polemic response to the (later collapsed) following invitation to the RfC on Classical music. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:40, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
I appreciate that brief history. I know we've talked some about seeing if there's an RfC that could be put together to synthesize some of those discussions. @Piotrus: I tried to follow objective criteria when selecting and linking diffs, so where multiple edits appeared in a row, I diffed them together. When actually citing them in, say, the summary, I agree the more specific diff should be used for clarity. WikiCup 2023 May newsletter

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:

Other notable performances were put in by Sammi Brie, Thebiguglyalien, MyCatIsAChonk, Chicago PCN02WPS, and London AirshipJungleman29.

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

Recent changes

  • Last week, Community Tech released the first update for providing better diffs, the #1 request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. This update adds legends and tooltips to inline diffs so that users unfamiliar with the blue and yellow highlights can better understand the type of edits made.
  • When you close an image that is displayed via MediaViewer, it will now return to the wiki page instead of going back in your browser history. This feature request was voted #65 in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey. [34]
  • The SyntaxHighlight extension now supports wikitext as a selected language. Old alternatives that were used to highlight wikitext, such as html5, moin, and html+handlebars, can now be replaced. [35]
  • Preloading text to new pages/sections now supports preloading from localized MediaWiki interface messages. Here is an example at the Czech Wikipedia that uses preload=MediaWiki:July. [36]

Problems

  • Graph Extension update: Foundation developers have completed upgrading the visualization software to Vega5. Existing community graphs based on Vega2 are no longer compatible. Communities need to update local graphs and templates, and shared lua modules like de:Modul:Graph. The Vega Porting guide provides the most comprehensive detail on migration from Vega2 and here is an example migration. Vega5 has currently just been enabled on mediawiki.org to provide a test environment for communities. [37]

We passed the 1 million Suggested edits milestone in late April!

  • The Suggested edits feature (AKA Newcomer tasks) increase newcomer activation by ~12%, which flows on through to increased retention. (source)
  • Suggested edits increase the number of edits newcomers complete in their first two weeks and have a relatively low revert rate. (source)
  • Suggested edits are available on all Wikipedia language editions.
  • Newer Suggested edits, like Add a link and Add an image, aren’t yet deployed to all wikis, but these structured tasks further increase the probability that newcomers will make their first edit. (source)

Positive reinforcement

Positive reinforcement aims to encourage newcomers who have visited our homepage and tried Growth features to keep editing.

  • The new Impact module was released to Growth pilot wikis in December 2022, and we are now scaling the feature to another ten wikis. [48]
  • The Leveling up features are deployed at our pilot wikis.
  • The Personalized praise features were deployed at our pilot wikis on May 24. Mentors at pilot wikis will start to receive notifications weekly when they have “praise-worthy” mentees. Mentors can configure their notification preferences or disable these notifications.

The change should have no noticeable effect on users, but if you experience any slow loading or other strangeness when using VisualEditor, please report it on the phabricator ticket linked here. Madame Butterfly, and it's something I've been looking forward to on the other side of all the arb work. It's been in the spotlight in the last decade alongside Otello as an example of how racism (historical and contemporary) is perpetuated in Opera. For context, Japantown, San Francisco is one of the oldest ethnic enclaves in the US, and Chinatown, San Francisco is the oldest Chinese enclave in North America, and one of the largest outside Asia. The San Francisco Opera choosing to do Madame Butterfly is provocative, to say the least! From the promotional materials it seems like the creative team is working really hard to stage a production in conversation with these critiques, and reimagining what the show could mean to contemporary audiences. I love that kind of production, where the same source material is used but all the other production elements are used in less traditional ways. I like when creative teams get to play around with what a source could mean rather than get stuck in what it has meant. So I'm fascinated and excited to see what they do. that's interesting because the Oper Frankfurt (the mezzo's European base) also staged a Butterfly recently (interviews mostly in English), and the tenor was one of these tourists who buy sex as an extra part of vacation (house and woman).   • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.
